The Rusted Shell
Image
The Rusted Shell is a four-decked ship that has navy-washed wood and white sails. Its hull is decorated with seashells found from the various depths to which the city travels. A constant plume of smoke is usually seen billowing up from a grate covered square on the top most deck. The ship has been around for seventy-five arcs and is well known for producing the best armor, despite the fact that they are limited in resources.

The ship has always had a master armorer at the helm, all bearing the surname of Galvin, as the trade was passed down to the sons of the family and the ownership of the boat was passed to the eldest of each new generation. Henry Galvin started the business when he was a young lad. The constant movement of the city allowed him the pick up varying styles, learning the best ways to shape and form armor for the best protection. The ship now sails beneath Henry Galvin IV.

The top deck is open with a crew constantly working the sails and the rigging to keep it in line with the rest of the ships of Blackbrine. On the top deck is a spacious cabin that serves as the Captain's Quarters. The second deck holds the working room for the armorers, filled with tools, contained fires, and materials. A grated square at the roof of the deck serves as a vent. The bottom deck holds crew quarters, a dining hall, and storage. Henry and his apprentices do their best to put a bit of personal flare in each of their armor pieces. Frequently the initials HG are etched in the armor along with a fan-shaped shell.

Creed's Trench
Image
Deep in the heart of Brineborn territory, the ocean floor was raised up around the resting place of Kiba’s mortalborn son, Creed, during the eight days and nights that they world was rocked by his anger. Only expert sailors can navigate the shallow waters and winding reefs between the sea and the trench of water that sinks down further than any rope tethered to an anchor and cast overboard has ever gone. Here the Brineborn make most of their offerings to Kiba, sinking whole chests full of gold and other treasures. It is said that during an earthquake, the sea pulls back and reveals all of the land here, except in the trench, a channel so vast it can safely accommodate a whole fleet of tall ships, sheltering them from the storm. The land around the trench is also referred to as ‘The Graveyard’ as so many ships have met their end on the reef, especially when caught at low tide, or by mistakenly sailing into the channel during a storm, only to be thrown against the rocks.

Devotion

Followers of the immortal Kiba can earn up to 10 devotion points for sailing into Creed's Trench and throwing an offering of gold into the dark, blue depths. Must have 50+ skill points in Seafaring to navigate the waters around the trench. Donations can be made no more than once per season. The Brineborn believe it is bad luck to sail into the trench during Cylus, but offerings will still be rewarded during this time with devotion points (generally 5-10 gold per point, but it all depends on the story and act. If for example, it was your character's last piece of gold in all the world, and they sailed all the way there just to throw it into the trench, full points would be awarded).

Smoke Salt
Image
Names: Smoke Salt, Mist Salt, U'frek's Breath, Fog Salt

Frequency: Smoke Salt crystals are headed in deep sandstone mines on the shores of beaches in the Northern, Eastern, and Southern regions of Idalos. While it is a renewable resource, the process of its making is long and it is frequently mined at a faster pace than it grows. This makes it a rare in a minimal sense. It can be found easier on untouched shores.

Appearance: In its barest form, Smoke Salt is in giant crystallized structures that are white with hints of gray. The individuals crystals are tight squares and the crystals can be ground down to rough powders to spread out over a larger area. Usually when throw in the water as a chunk, the shroud of smoke stays dense and compact. Powder spread over water gives off a long stretch of thick smoke.

Toxicity & Hazards: The salt itself is not hazardous to touch. If ingested it can give off the smoke internally and cause respiratory problems and problems in the stomach. Breathing in the smoke of Smoke Salt can cause longterm damage. The smoke is mildly corrosive to things like mucous membranes and can cause pain and scarring in the lobes of the lungs and up and down the throat and, to a lesser degree, in the mouth. When Brineborn use the salt, they generally manifest an immunity to it but they also take care to cover their nose and mouth.

Properties: A chunk of smoke salt immediately when it hits water begins releasing a thick, fog-like mist that is nearly impenetrable. It takes only a few well-placed chunks to help an entire ship disappear into the thick fog. It is rumored that in big enough quantities that the Brineborn can strategically be placed to let off enough fog to cover up entire islands. A chunk of Smoke Salt the size of a balled fist can emit fog for up to two breaks. Bigger chunks, like those that are rumored to be used to disappear an island, can emit fog for up to two trials.

Other Information: Being around the fog of Smoke Salt without proper precautions can cause permanent damage to your internal organs and even end in death.

Cost
50gn for chunk the size of a fist
200gn for chunk the size of a small bush

Umber Algae
Image
Names: Umber Algae, Black Algae, Soulless Algae, Ebony Algae, Obsidian Algae

Frequency: In the Orm'del Sea, in the areas far away from the coast, the algae blooms. It is most concentrated over the deep sea wreckage of The Furor, where an unknown but toxic black liquid bubbles up and coats the surface water in a dark sheen. The is where the algae flourishes and here it is thick and can be dangerous to sailing ships, akin to sailing through ice floes in the North.

Appearance: Umber Algae is a stringy and slimy algae that blooms heavily on the surface of the water over the wreckage of The Furor among the oily black liquid that bubbles to the surface. It is always floating atop the water and there is no known season or weather condition that changes its growth. The algae gets tangled up and grows together so thick in some areas, the texture of muddy sludge or stiffer, that it makes it hard for ships to pass. Sometimes sailors have to be lowered to small boats to beat the algae apart with machetes and other sharp blades. Fire is never used as it is extremely hazardous to the ships and the black oil is very flammable. Crewman are advised to cover their mouth and nose with a cloth.

Toxicity & Hazards: Umber Algae sucks up all of the oxygen in the water, making a hypoxic (or dead) zone. It also is thick enough to block out the sun above that is needed to grow other sea plants. This area is devoid of life. Sea creatures avoid the toxic liquid and lack of oxygen, and plants can't grow without proper light and oxygen. Fisherman have to give the blackened surface a good berth when running their nets so that they don't risk catching fish or crabs that have suffered toxification.

Properties: Thanks to its abundant growth, Umber algae is in no short supply. The strange black liquid over The Furor that the algae mixes with and soaks in makes it inedible and toxic. In other situations, algae can be utilized as a source of nutrients for sea life and occasionally humans. Because the black liquid and algae is toxic, many poisoners and chemists are experimenting with the black algae to see what practical uses they may have in making drugs, toxins, or poisons. What they do know is that short-term effects can cause trouble breathing or damage to the respiratory tracts. Longer-term concerns are psychological distress and effects to other organ systems in the body.

Other Information: The toxicity of black algae is well-known and it is not advised to have prolonged contact with the algae, lest you suffer short or long-term health consequences.

Cost Most Umber Algae is sold for "research" purposes, the rest is destroyed or left alone.
5gn per pound

The Cursed Blackness
Image
 ! Message from: Kingdom
I'm going to have a think on this one. Might need a few changes.
There is an area within the roaming location of the city of Blackbrine that is known to the Brineborn as The Cursed Blackness. At the sea bed there, a large wooden ship is crashed and broken into pieces with a black liquid rising up from it in waves and curves. It bubbles to the surface and creates a coat of black sheen on the top of the water. The Brineborn, having sailed through it and had many experiences, know that even a small spark can set the entire black surface of the water on the fire and cause mass distraction to the wooden ships sailing in the Blackbrine cluster. Because of its unexplained ability to catch fire the the legend of the wreckage, it is considered cursed by the Brineborn and most pirates.

The legend of how The Cursed Blackness came to be well-known among the Brineborn and many pirates. Often it serves as a bit of a ghost story to frighten children. The legend tells of a great pirate ship known as The Furor with the most black-hearted and mean pirates they ever sailed the Orm'del Sea. They never showed mercy in their pillaging, striking down women and children if necessary. Whole cities and congregations of ships were burned to the ground in their wake. One day, justice was brought upon The Furor by an armada of city ships and the ship was sunken into the depths of the sea. It is said that black liquid began to bubble up from the wreckage and coat the surface. The armada claimed that the blackness of their souls poisoned the sea. It is still the story to this day.

Sacrifices

People believe that U'frek, seeing the advantage these pirates took with their power over the water, was a lead in their destruction. Because of this, people will make a perilous journey to The Cursed Blackness to drop in offerings of gold or other sacrifices to U'frek. Sometimes a mortal sacrifice of a "blackened" pirate is made. People do this to gain favor from U'frek or to pray for smooth passage on a journey. You must have at least 40 points in Seafaring to traverse The Cursed Blackness.

Devotion points gained scale based upon how much gold or other sacrifice you put into your offering. You may receive up to +10 devotion points depending on the amount of gold you give and how it relates to your own fortune. For instance, someone who gives 10 gn who is a pauper will receive more points than a person who gives 10gn and is a wealthy person. The scale for blood sacrifices also scales on the basis of value. You can earn up to +10 devotion points. Sacrificing a pirate with a truly evil soul would earn you more points than three sacrifices of moderately bad-natured pirates.

Blackbrine Development
Image
Names: Meraki Reeds

Frequency: Meraki reeds common in deeper water areas, however they grow in small, lean bunches.

Appearance: The Meraki reed can be several feet in length. Typically growing from deep water, it goes from the ocean floor to just below the surface. Its roots are thick and strong, and it's a dark purple in color. As it gets closer to the surface- and the light-, however, it changes from purple to green. The top of the plant has big, round, green, padded leaves. When the reed is ripe for harvest, it has tiny little purple flowers beside those leaves.

Toxicity & Hazards: Virtually none. The Meraki reed is harmless. The only possible hazard is if the reeds wrap around your legs when you swim through them, you might get a bit stuck.

Properties: The Meraki reeds are edible, often harvested to use in salads, and are considered very nutritional and filling. However, they also have medicinal properties. The flowers that bloom when the plant is ripe can be made into a paste that works well on itchy skin. However, the best part is the roots. They're difficult to get, having to dive down to reach them. Many would rather pay Mer to collect them than to do so themselves. But the roots are very strong in medicine. In fact, the only known cure for Scalvoris Scurvy is the roots of the Meraki reeds.

Other Information: Meraki reeds are popular for all sorts of reasons. They can be woven into baskets, thin strands but very sturdy. People have even made more primitive style of clothing out of them. However, Meraki reeds won't grow outside of water. Their leaves, for instance, will wilt if they grow up too high and the water if off them- so they're usually a good distance away from the surface, yet just close enough for sunlight and to be seen.

Cost 8 SN x ft of the reed. 3 GN for a pound bundle of the leaves and flowers. 10 GN for 3 roots.
