Re: [Scalvoris] Flora

Stink Cabbage
Image
Developed by Devin
Found: Stink Cabbage can be found all over Scalvoris. It isn’t particularly picky as to where it grows.
Toxicity/Hazard: None, apart from the smell.
Appearance: Stink Cabbage doesn’t look in any way special. It looks just like normal, green cabbage. It’s even the same size. The only difference is the smell, which means that someone who suffers from anosmia won’t be able to tell Stink Cabbage and normal cabbage apart.
Properties: Stink Cabbage has several properties. The first and best-known “property” is its smell. When Stink Cabbage is fresh, it smells like unwashed feet which is not a particularly pleasant smell. It gets worse when the leaves are dried though. It also has a second, much less well-known property though. The dried leaves can be used to make an ointment with antibiotic properties that is quite effective. Unfortunately, few herbalists in Scalvoris stock Stink Cabbage, and few doctors make the ointment them due to the pungent smell. Furthermore, Stink Cabbage is actually quite tasty – if you get over the smell.
Other Information: Due to the terrible smell of the dried leaves, some especially naughty children like to use them for pranks.

Re: [Scalvoris] Flora

Night Blooms
Image
Developed by Shl'drei
Short Description An oddly vibrant flower with hallucinogenic properties and a devious pollen.

Found Night blooms can grow anywhere, but they require a large amount of shade. More often than not they boom in warmer, darker places. Because of this they seem to be dark in color. They've yet to be found outside of Scalvoris but Night blooms can be gardened (Competent Level), though it is recommended that you keep them away from places where people could potentially activate them.

Toxicity/Hazard While not inherently dangerous, Night Blooms produce a potent hallucinogenic pollen that dries the mouth. Only worrisome/deadly if untreated.

Appearance A bright purple bloom, the Night blooms seem to sparkle in the light- or reflect it. The blooms sprout in blue, turn purple and finally indigo at maturity. They grow to be roughly the size of an adult male human hand, and are known for being odorless unless triggered. While they only bloom at night as the name suggests, their pollen can be released and harvested regardless.

Properties Odorless unless triggered, these vibrant flowers smell sweetly earthy and can reflect light. The petals and stems can be used as hallucinogens- the pollen has absorbent properties that can be dangerous if not tended to.

Rarity Unusual

How To Use Petals can be grounded to powder/dust and added to food or drinks. The stem must be carefully boiled until brown, then dried. Afterwards they can safely be ground down as well.

Side Effects Pollen is an absorbent- if left alone for too long it can be fatal.

Status Legal (Unknown)

Price Tier 4

Notes First Discovered in Sweetwine.

Using It
-- Competent
-- The flower needs to be dug up at the roots as to not trigger the pollen.
-- The flower, stem and all must be boiled in water for at least 10-15 bits. Once done, shock the whole plant and snap the stem from the bud and roots while submerged.
-- The roots have no special uses so can be thrown away. But once dried the stem and Petals can be ground down to dust/powder.
-- The dust from the petals is less potent and can be added to food and drink to add to a low level hallucinogen that lasts 3-4 breaks depending on consumption.
The dust from thr stem is very potent and most commonly used in drugs. Can last a trial or two depending on consumption.

Danger
-- Low to High
-- Incorrect harvesting could trigger the pollen and potentially the hallucinogen.
Tending It
-- Competent
-- Keep away from sun, keep in well shaded areas. If they start turning white its a sign its wilting or wilted. All properties are lost in this case.
-- Water once per two-four trials depending on how much water is used.

Re: [Scalvoris] Flora

Charwood
Image
Developed by Darius Baer
Short Description A tall tree with bark and sap that act as natural fire retardants. Wood and Sap in more detail here
Found Faldrass
Toxicity/Hazard
Appearance The average Charwood stands at approximately 35m tall, however some specimens can grow as tall as 50m. Their trunks can reach up to 1.5m in diameter. They are most easily identified not only by their size that helps them to stand out from other trees, but also by their brown bark with flaky strips. Their branches feature small, prickly leaves, and do not produce fruit. When these leaves fall to the ground, they act as seeds for the next generation of Charwood.
Properties The bark and sap are naturally resistant to fire, appearing to actively put out flames. The wood beneath is flammable, however, so the wood can be debarked for the purposes of making firewood.
Rarity The Charwood is only known to exist on the island of Faldrass.
How To Use Debarked Charwood can be used for firewood and woodworking, just like most other trees.
Side Effects N/A
Status Available.
Price Not currently for sale.
Notes The Charwood was only discovered in the wake of the eruption in arc 720. Some believe that its roots are infused with lava from the eruption, and it is this that makes it resistant to an external flame.

Re: [Scalvoris] Flora

Wisp-wish Blooms
Image
Developed by Ari'sora
Toxicity/Hazard: They are poisonous if eaten, but are otherwise harmless.

Appearance: Dark purple flowers with a reddish purple and yellow center.

Properties:
1. Colour Change: At night, the center of the flower glows with a soft light that ranges in color from blue to purple to yellow.
2. Poison:
Roots Touching the roots with bare skin will leave the area the roots came into contact with feeling numb; a brief touch will leave you numb for a break while holding/touching the roots for three bits or longer will leave you numb for several breaks. Feeling returns slowly over the course of a break along with an intense tingling/pins and needles sensation.
These roots can be made into a powerful paralytic poison that leaves people unable to move but still able to feel everything.

Flowers Eating the flowers will cause intense stomach cramps that start within a matter of bits after eating them and worsen over the next breaks. Death is a possibility if left untreated, depending on the amount eaten. Full recovery can take trials.

Rumors:
It is said that if one finds one of these flowers during the night of a full moon and makes a wish on it, that wish will come true. But it is also said that great care must be taken when making a wish on these flowers because unless the wish is worded very precisely, it might come true in ways that the person wishing it never wanted it too. The wish granting abilities of these flowers is common "knowledge" in Scalvorian folk lore, but is not actually true.

Faldrass Potato
Image
Developed by Darius Baer
Short Description: A large root vegetable that is always warm.
Found: Faldrass
Toxicity/Hazard: Due to the volcanic origins of the vegetable, the skin can be toxic if ingested.
Appearance: On the outside, the Faldrass potato plant resembles a ball of lava, but once cut open, it resembles a large potato.
Properties: Beyond being a larger form of potato, the Faldrass potato also bears an innate warmth, meaning it can sit on a plate for a long time after being cooked without going cold, and can even be used as a source of warmth.
Rarity: Uncommon.
How To Use: The Faldrass potato can be used mostly in the same ways a regular potato can be used: mashed, baked, boiled, or steamed. However, due to the toxicity of the skin, they should always be peeled first, and due to their innate warmth, they are not suitable for a cold dish, such as a potato salad.
Side Effects:
Status: Available to be foraged on Faldrass.
Price: Currently not for sale.
Notes: The Faldrass potato was discovered by Faldrass refugees returning to their homeland following the eruption of Arc 720.

Re: [Scalvoris] Flora

Night Scented Stock
Image
Developed by DEVIN
Short Description Night Scented Stock are lovely flowers in various pastel hues, ranging from red over pink to violet. They emit a sweet smell that is most intense in the middle of the night.
Found In clearings in the forests of Scalvoris. They are most common in the Sweetwine Woods, however.
Toxicity/Hazard Night Scented Stocks are not toxic, although eating them in larger quantities can cause abdominal pain.
Appearance Night Scented Stocks are beautiful to behold. The plants can grow to a height of up to 30 inches, with sturdy, dark green steams and silvery green, lance-shaped leaves that resemble those of the Biqaj Tree, although they do not glow. The flowers are usually various shades of pastel pink, red or violet. Rarely, a white flower can be found.
Properties Night Scented Stock emits a smell that can best be described as a mixture of vanilla with a hint of a lovely floral perfume. That smell is faint during the trial, but grows more intense as darkness falls. It is strongest at midnight. After that, it begins to fade again. The hint of floral perfume is missing in the white flowers. They only smell of vanilla.
Rarity Common
How To Use The flowers can be used to make a gentle perfume. If you use them for that purpose, it is best to harvest them at night when their smell is most intense. Furthermore, they can be used in cooking and baking to add a special flavor to one’s dishes. They also serve as a less intense, but more colorful replacement for vanilla and can either be used as is or dried and ground into a fine powder. As the flowers are edible, cooks sometimes use them to decorate their meals or put them into their fruit salads, for example.
Side Effects None, unless you consume them in excess which might cause abdominal pain.

Re: [Scalvoris] Flora

Spiritweed
Image
Developed by DEVIN
Short Description Spiritweed is a long, grey type of grass that can cause someone to hear spirits.
Found Spiritweed can be found deep in the forests of Scalvoris, but it is exceedingly rare. Some claim, that it is more likely to be found in places where spirits are or have been active, or near certain religious sites, but that is just that - a claim. Nobody knows why Spiritweed grows where it does yet, only that it rarely occurs among patches of normal grass.
Toxicity/Hazard Ingesting Spiritweed can cause dreadful stomach aches and vomiting. These side effects can be avoided by drying it first. Larger quantities of Spiritweed can cause speech problems and balance problems. Death is highly unlikely to occur though, unless one ingests an exceedingly large dose.
Appearance Spiritweed looks like regular grass, but it is grey.
Properties An individual that ingests or smokes Spiritweed enters an almost trance-like state during which they can hear spirits, provided that they are in a place where spirits are present. They can just hear them, more clearly than they normally would, but they cannot really understand what they are saying - or be understood by them.
Rarity Rare
How To Use Spiritweed can be dried, ground into a powder and ingested. It can also be smoked though.
Side Effects Ingesting fresh Spiritweed can cause stomach cramps and vomiting. These side effects can be avoided by drying it first. An individual that ingests Spiritweed also enters an almost trance-like state. Larger quantities of Spiritweed can cause the individual to become incoherent and suffer balance problems as well as visual hallucinations that vary in severity, depending on how much Spiritweed was ingested.
Status Legal
Price -
Notes While it is legal to own Spiritweed, it is not normally for sale. Usually, one has to gather it.

Re: [Scalvoris] Flora

Bloodleaf Trees
Image
Developed by Balthazar Black
Short Description Haunting white trees with vibrant red leaves that are surprisingly edible.
Found Bloodleaf trees can be found in small pockets all across the Sweetwine Woods but they have not grown naturally anywhere else.
Toxicity/Hazard There is no risk of poisoning by consuming any parts of the bloodleaf tree.
Appearance The bloodleaf trees tend to have thick bases which grow thinner and curve as they grow taller white a stark white wood that cracks as the tree ages and releases a thick red sap. The most notable feature of the tree is the thick layer of blood red leaves that seemed to endure all seasons except Cylus. When cut into, these trees seem to bleed a sap almost indistinguishable in appearance and flow from blood.
Properties The wood of the bloodleaf tree is flexible which allows them to bend slightly in the wind and makes the wood great for use in bows. The leaves of the bloodleaf tree can be consumed and provide nourishment to the body comparable to spinach while providing an irony, and predictably blood-like taste. The sap of the bloodleaf tree and be collected and consumed as well though it had a taste more akin to a sweet honey than blood.
Rarity Very Rare
How To Use There are no steps needed to prepare the leaves before they are safe to consume but most would separate them from the tree. Similarly there are no steps needed to prepare the sap for consumption.
Side Effects Some have noted that when they cut into or pull the leaves from bloodleaf trees, their eyes begin to water. This is because when such actions are performed, the tree produces a chemical irritant much like onions as a defensive measure. However this effect only seems to come from living trees, not pieces once they'd been removed.
Status Legal
Price Tier 4
Notes They seem to thrive more in the Sweetwine Woods than anywhere else. Attempts to grow them elsewhere will produce notable smaller versions of the trees in the Sweetwine Woods.

Firana
Image
Developed by Alyssia
Short Description: The Firana is a fruit native to the island of Scalvoris.
Found: The Firana is a native to the island of Scalvoris found in the wilds. It was discovered on the way to the Sky Worship clearing by Migh and his group.
Toxicity/Hazard: There is no known toxicity or hazard when eating the fruit.
Appearance: Firana look exactly like normal bananas except for the red color to the skin. The actual fruit within the casing is a light pink color appearing almost like a raw meat. If it is cooked in a pan or able to be cooked over a fire the fruit darkens into a deep red close to the peels color.
Properties: The Firana has a spicy smell that attracts people to it. Though the raw meat color normally turns people off. Few that have actually tried the fruit say that the taste is like spiced meat, but when raw is very bitter and hard to swallow. After cooking it the smell of spices is even stronger and the taste is far better. It actually ends up tasting like cooked spicy meat from a restaurant. Cooks have been known to use it in place of meat during hard times in the cold cycle.
Rarity: Common in Scalvoris, uncommon in the rest of Idalos
How To Use: The firana can be eaten raw though the flavor is not good. When cooked it tastes far better.
Side Effects: there are no known side effects to eating the Firana
