Snow All Around Us (Evangeline)

The cities and villages of Melrath are as varied and diverse as they come. The capital of Raelia is the the jewel of this western kingdom, playing host to a merchants, artisans, Aesir priests, as well as a cut throat political landscape dominated by the nobles of Raelia. To the south in the depths of the Myrkvior Forest lies Melrath's second largest, and oldest city, Fensalir. Here people have learned to live alongside spirits and the natural world by maintaining their loyalty to traditions laid down the first Melrathi. To the east lies the small fishing village of Noatun, and to the western mountains rests the Mer city of Verimeer, the brewing town of Alivilda and the alpine village Vormund.

Re: Snow All Around Us (Evangeline)

Kain's broad smile given for show fell a bit as Eva pulled out some coins to pay for the fish. He really hadn't been expecting that. She also knew the man's name. She must know him, and him her. It was such an odd experience for Kain, and he couldn't quite figure out why. She was the first person to not react in a more dramatic way to him and his antics. Some played along, some laughed, some were annoyed, but all had something along those veins.

Eva on the other hand, was being kind and nothing more. And not just being kind to Kain, it seemed, but kind to this Deklin as well, finishing up Kain's mild interrogation of the man with poise. He followed her out, accepting the fish she offered. Beggars couldn't be choosers when it came to food and pride, and fishing was rough when the bay was frozen over. And for the first time since Kain had approached her, his face went serious, no longer carrying the jesting smile and sarcasm he'd been wielding so far.

"Dank ya, Evangeline. Ya're very kind. Truly. I ain' eva gonna forget it."

He followed her to the supply shop, staying quiet along the way. This shop had a vast array of tools, including the large shovels useful for snow. Who knew such a thing existed? Yes, that would work really well he thought. He stepped back out into the street with her, holding the wrapped fish close to his side. "Well, I 'ave a shovel to get an' work to do. I 'ave taken up enough of ya're time totrial. Dank ya again. Please, enjoy da res' of ya walk, Evangeline. I 'ope to see ya aroun'. Ay'll let ya know 'ow the shovel works out."

He gave her a nod of his head, a grateful look in his eyes, his mouth in a more neutral expression. Then that jesting smile crept upon his face as he turned back toward the supply shop, slipping in. He was going to get himself a shovel, and a pail. He'd get the absolute cheapest they had to offer, and he would do so with the smile he wore as a type of armor for strangers. But all the while, there was that nagging thing in the back of his mind.

Who was that woman, really?

She worked in a tavern. Eva knew pretty much everyone that worked in and around the docks. Her solution to the situation was the simplest she could come up with. It had been entertaining, watching Kainoa, but his antics were going to fail and there had been no point in continuing. When he thanked her for the fish, she simply nodded her head and smiled.

Eva did notice, however, that her companion got quiet on the walk to the general supply store. Interesting. So, he could take social cues. The young woman wondered, in particular, what was occupying his mind. Whatever the change was, it was on full display during that visit. Gone were the dramatics which, in her mind, improved the situation greatly. As they stepped outside again, Kainoa thanked her for her help, claiming he had work to do. Inclining her head again, she gave him a genuine smile this time. “Stay out of trouble, Kainoa.”

Walking away, she didn’t look back. Evangeline had a walk to continue and while she had no plans, the unexpected encounter had left her a bit unsettled. Letting her eyes gaze over the water, she decided that perhaps totrial, she would find a place to walk where she couldn’t see the water, simply lacking the emotional energy necessary to deal with the memories surfacing. It was going to be one of those trials, it seemed.

Thankful that she wasn’t working, the young woman found turned away from the water and headed into the city. She had some contemplation to do and totrial, she needed the safety of land to do it in.

Skill Review: All Skills used appropriately to PC's level
Notes:I find Kain's manner of speaking to be very distinct. It's uncommon enough to find characters that fully commit to a dialect, but you do so consistently. It's not too hard to understand what he's saying either, at least not to my eyes. The predicament of being buried in snow when waking up is all too real. The idea of shoveling it with one's hands is really hard to imagine, Kain is terribly poor to have never even heard of a shovel! But at least Quinn was on hand to help him, if nobody else.

Quinn was well realized in this piece, and I enjoyed her part in helping the poor fisherman deal with his snow problems. She seems very standoffish for a server, but I suppose she saves that energy for work. The additions of her thoughts about her family dying at sea was a nice and poignant addition as well. But maybe Kainoa can convince her to come out to sea sometime!

Well done and enjoy the rewards. Kain, if you come back, please resubmit for approval with your skills used and knowledge claimed. Thanks!
