Appearance

At first glance Cad appears to be a regular human. He looks to be in his thirties with Caucasian skin, unkempt black hair and an impressively curly moustache, which altogether give him a distinctly mad scientist vibe. He is very skinny and lacking in muscle, and has a taste for garishly posh clothing: particularly capes. However just a touch of Cad’s cold skin is all it takes to reveal that his body is not made of flesh and blood at all, but of wood, leather and metal. Cad’s body is a golem originally created by Aeva to be a perfect new body for her son, but was since customised by Cad to appear more to his liking. Besides a few faint lines around his joints it is still nigh impossible to notice this deception, as Cad’s domain allows him to control this body with precision and grace beyond what a golem should be capable of and grants it the illusion of true life.

As a self proclaimed master of disguise Cad wears a wide range of clothing, but on a regular basis can be found in two outfits: a black suit shirt, red waistcoat and flowing cape that he regards as casual wear, and a set of lightly armoured black and purple mages robes, complete with a hood and mask, that he dons when acting as his villainous alter-ego: Diabolical. His cape is a magical item known as the amazing technicolour dream cloak, which among other abilities will change its colour and shape according to Cad's will.

At a first impression, Cad is perhaps the most incompetent villain on the planet. He is vibrantly over-dramatic, apparently lacking in any sense of street smarts or shame, and if allowed into someone's house would be more likely to set a trap that would dunk a bucket of custard over their head than steal their possessions. He has both the energy and naivety of a nine year old child, and is drawn towards attention like a moth to a flame. Add that to his garish fashion sense, his proclivity for breaking out into maniacal laughter at every possible opportunity, and his unnaturally appalling bad luck, and Cad often seems like a villain straight out of a fairy tale in all the worst ways. A generous person might describe him as larger than life, but most would simply call him a complete fruitcake and leave it at that.

Get to know Cad a little better however and you might discover that he has quite a few admirable traits beneath the surface of his nefarious persona. For one thing Cad possesses a stubborn determination that few can match. His evil schemes may be foiled a hundred times over, whether by plucky do-gooders or simple bad luck, but you can count on Cad to always pick himself back up, brush himself off, and begin devising a new plan to try again. He may retreat when victory is impossible, but as certain as the tide flows back and forth he will always return. He also wields an impressively keen intellect and vivid imagination, which together make him a talented inventor and magician. While his abysmal social skills and lack of general wisdom make his plans quick to fall apart when faced with adversity, few can fault that the initial ideas behind them as actually rather ingenious if one cares to examine them closely enough.

Deep inside Cad faces the same problem many other children of divine heritage wrestle with; coming to terms with his domains. As one who has suffered greatly at the hands of his own uncontrollable powers and continues to do so to this day, Cad has a strong complex about his perceived weakness. The motivations behind all his evil schemes and grand dreams is to prove once and for all that he is not the weak person his very soul forces him to be; to make people recognise that he is stronger than anyone.

Some mortalborn are destined for greatness. Within their divine heritage they find the strength to be leaders, heroes and kings; to leave a mark on history that will be remembered for centuries to come.

Cad is not one of these mortalborn.

Born a son of the Immortal Aeva, Cad had a difficult start in life. Because of the effects of his domain of weakness his body was severely weakened and prone to sickness, and so he was confined to bed for most of his life as a child. His father was a loving man, but one ruled by fear of his fragile son coming to harm, and so rarely allowed him to leave his house in Volta. As such the majority of Cad’s childhood was spent between the pages of books. He learnt about the history of the world and the creatures within it from the drawings and descriptions of them rather than seeing them in person, and sought companionship in the tales of heroes rather than in other children. Because of this Cad became very smart in matters of science and maths, but lacked the experience to understand people or the customs of society. More than anything he loved fairy tales, and longed to be free to roam the world and go on adventures like the characters in his stories could. Yet as his own domains denied him this opportunity he grew to resent his divine heritage, and began to feel that it was his fate to forever be weak.

As a teenager Cad’s desire to rebel against his fate skyrocketed. He began sneaking out to go on adventures, but was always stopped by his father. After one incident when he almost died trying to ride a horse his father screamed at him that he could never become a hero because he would never be strong enough for others to rely on, so he should just give up. Cad stopped trying after that. However without his dream of becoming a hero to cling onto, Cad lost the will to fight back against his weakened body. He fell sick, and began to die and the disease tore through his weakened flesh.

At first his father tried to solve the problem with magic, and hired a witch named Calypso who marketed herself as having the power to alter life and death. Calypso was a necromancer and grafter, and though she was unable to find a solution for Cad's affliction it interested her greatly to study the effects of his usual biology. She even agreed to initiate him into her two main branches of magic; more for the rare opportunity to see how they reacted with his soul than because she saw any special worth in him as an apprentice. Together they tried many experiments to strengthen or preserve his body, but no matter what they tried Cad's domain stole away whatever strength they tried to give him in the blink of an eye.

Next his father prayed to Aeva for aid, and in answer to his desperate prayer the forge mistress appeared before him. She told him that no doctor would ever be able to cure the weaknesses of Cad’s body since it stemmed from the power of his very soul, and so saving him was impossible. However due to his other domain over golems Aeva theorized that his soul might be able to endure in a golem body, and crafted a vessel out of wood, leather and metal. Such was Aeva’s skill that this body looked indistinguishable from a regular human, and possessed an flawless, doll-like beauty that could have rivalled even the fairest of queens. When Cad died Aeva transferred his soul into this body, and to her relief found that it worked as perfectly as intended.

However when Cad awoke he did not care for the perfection of his new form. He was so tired of being a weakling, and no amount of false beauty would change that. He still longed to be free, to live however he wanted. A few days after his resurrection he began to realise that now with his new golem body it was possible to do that. While his domain of weakness would forever make even this artificial body fragile it at least made him immune to sickness, and thanks to that nothing was stopping him from travelling any longer. Cad resolved that if he could never be a great hero, then he’d just have to be the greatest villain instead. If he conquered the world he’d be free to do whatever he wanted, and would have proven to everyone who doubted him that, despite what fate had decided, he too could be strong.

With Calypso's aid, Cad fled Volta and spent a few years travelling the world. His book smarts gave him the intelligence he needed to earn good money as an inventor and build a small fortune for himself, but his complete lack of street smarts often got him into trouble. For the first time in his life he began to engage in and learn about the world outside his house, and he absolutely loved it. Yet this love only inflamed his desire to prove himself to a world that appeared so beautiful to him by claiming it as his own. Eventually during his studies into the arts of ensorcelling Cad discovered the legend of The Miracle Stone, a well of incredible power that was believed to possess the power to grant any wish, and was immediately captivated by dreams of finding it. Chasing its legend led Cad to Scalvoris, where he determined that the pirate island was the perfect staging point to begin his quest for world domination. First he would find the Miracle Stone, then rule the island, and then the world...



During the events of Ruin's Dawn: Ascension, Cad had a hand in the murder of the Immortal Faldrun, and helped the mortalborn Valtharn to become the Immortal of Ruin. Afterwards Cad became Valtharn's first official follower; promising his loyalty in exchange for her support in his quest to take over the world.

Elemental Manipulation - Fire (Minor) The Marked is able to control fire in close proximity to themselves. They are capable of controlling only small amounts of fire at short distances, nothing larger than a small bonfire and no further than five feet away from their own body. The marked is able to move the flames with a simple gesture, but they can not be thrown. Flames are red to orange in color. This ability can wrest control away from a Competent or below level Defier.
Hot Blooded (Minor) The Marked's body temperature rises slightly. This increase in temperature can be felt by those that touch the Marked. It also gives the Marked immunity to the effects a slight heat. (Hot day, working in forge, etc.)
Passionate Skills I The character is granted an extra three skill points which may be spent only on the following skills: Any Martial Skill, Resistance, Blacksmithing, or Intimidation. Any skill points granted by this Mark can break the 250 (or 100 if fast track) point cap on skills. Within these skills, the points may be spent how the pc chooses.
Corona (Minor) The Marked is able to cover their body in a sheath of flames for a break once a trial. The sheath is able to help regulate body temperature in cold climates, keeping the Marked warm. The sheath also has combat capabilities depending on how it is utilized by the Marked. The heat of these flames is determined by the Marked's Fire Manipulation ability.
Fire Fight The Marked is able to condense their corona aura into their hands and feet, or project bursts of flame from their limbs or mouth. The power of both the aura and the projections are limited to the owners Corona and Elemental Manipulation abilities respectfully.
Long Burn The Marked takes an extended period of rest for ten breaks, of which half must be in direct sunlight, and can then function for two trials without rest. After which the character must rest again for another ten breaks. If they do not, they become fatigued.
Cauterize (Minor) The Marked's body automatically closes and begins to heal any minor wounds they may suffered. The process requires the the Marked to remain in a restful state, and in or near a hot area.(Hot room, or near a large fire)
Sense The Troubled The Marked are no stranger to conflict, and this ability allows them to prepare for it. Turmoil in others, indecisions, stress, nervousness is often unseen save to those of exceptional empathetic talent. This ability allows one of Faldrun’s favored to ‘sense’ the turmoil of people around them. Mostly this will manifest as a vague prickling sensation but if the marked concentrates on it, they can find the source and small snippets of clues as to what is causing it. They may feel a flash of fury or bloodthirsty glee to someone weighing whether they should attack or the heart wrenching indecision of a guard accepting a bribe. These are only clues that allow the marked to better understand the people they encounter and the thoughts that consume them.
Inner Turmoil The owner of the mark is plagued by inner conflict. Though they are able to keep the turmoil in check most times, it can present itself as shortness of temper, or the owner muttering to themselves during times of great stress. At the same time the Turmoil acts as a buffer against any kind of outside mental forces, such as Empathy Domain Magics, or other Blessings. This ability functions against other Blessings of equal or lower tiers, or on Domain Magic as follows: Favored: Competent or below, Adored: Expert or below, Exalted: Master or below, Champion: Champions have resistance to Legendary Mages, but are not immune.

Necromancy

  • Koi Sigil - All thralls that Cad animates gain the sigil of a koi fish carved on the back of their necks, which remain even after Cad's control is broken. (Witchmark)
  • Soul Strings - When using the link technique, Cad's connection to his linked thrall is unusually strong. When linked to a thrall, the range of control Cad has over his thralls is transferred from Cad's body to the thrall he is linked to. This means that other thralls can accompany the linked thrall outside of Cad's usual range so long as they remain in range of the linked thrall instead, however does not mean that Cad is able to raise new thralls from within his linked thralls range. However the downside to this is that Cad's connection to his linked thrall is strong enough to be visible to anyone with even the slightest ability to percieve ether, such as attuners or those bearer runes of ethersight. To those who can see it the connection appears to be a thin string of glowing green energy leading from the linked thrall straight to Cad. Relevant mental powers cast on the linked thrall, such as the ability to read throughts or illusions, will also travel back through this connection and allow them to access Cad's mind. If the linked thrall is destroyed the thralls being animated within its radius will immediately fall inanimate.
  • Marionette Minion - The spark within Cad has awakened another mutation in him, that imposes mannerisms of Cad himself upon his thralls when he commands them with a gesture. A golem that wears a cape will flourish it dramatically in time with every gestured command to utilize a mechanism or magic item installed within it. Another thrall might give a wooden cackle as it gleefully activates a trap. When issuing a command to or controling his thralls, Cad is required to make relevant, puppetry-like gestures with at least one of his hands. If he cannot do this due to his hands being bound, removed, or already holding something then his thralls will not obey his commands.

Graft

  • Yellow Left - Because of his graft spark, the left eye of Cad's golem body has become a functional, organic human eye with an unnatural yellow coloured iris. This eye is vulnerable to damage, can be blinded, and can cry. (Witchmark)
  • Expressive - Cad's spark adamantly refuses to return life to the ordinary way it used to be, and nowhere is this more obvious than when healing. When Cad uses energizing to repair a wound or other injury on someone's body, the healed area will always undergo a small but visible cosmetic change. Cuts might be knitted together to leave behind a scar of tiny scales, or a regrown eye might be slitted and amber like a cats. These changes are purely cosmetic in nature, and do not grant any special abilities or consequences unless agreed upon by a moderator.
  • Easel - The colour of ones body is merely the result of pigmentation, and is easy to change with a minor alteration in chemicals. By expending a small amount of ether, Cad is able to change the colour of any hair or skin his hands directly touch. However due to his spark's stubborn nature Cad is unable to undo whatever colour changes he makes to someone's hair or skin. He can change it to a new colour, but never back to a colour he knows that it used to be.

Thralls

Witcheart Doppelganger

Witcheart Doppelganger is primarily made of wood and leather, but was made by a master of engineering to perfectly replicate the shape and movements of a human body. Doppelganger can move with a grace and flexibility that can match most humans, and contains two retractable blades within its wrists and a crossbow in its stomache loaded with a rope dart. It is dressed to resemble Cad, and thanks to a music-box like device within its throat is able to mimic most human vocal sounds when under his control. It contains a raw lumite well within its head. Having expert level or higher in a detection skill will allow a player to eventually discern that this golem is not actually a real human.

Witcheart Mountain

Witcheart Mountain is a giant-class golem fashioned primaryily from solid stone, albeit with some leather straps in the joints to allow it the flexibility needed to move. It contains no tricks or traps, instead using nothing but its sheer size and weight to clobber enemies. Beneath the large, tattered black cloak it wears it is shaped vaguely like a suit of armour. Although it is a powerhouse of immense durability, Mountain is a very slow golem and is somewhat clumsy with its movements, granting it poor balance.

Mortalborn abilities:

Hamartia

Everything has a weakness. It could be a physical one, like an old injury or a crack in a wall. It could be a psychological one, like a fear or a nasty secret. It could even be a supernatural one, like a mutation or a curse. As long as Cad can see his target and consciously wishes to activate this power, a disembodied voice will whisper in his ear telling him what the target's current greatest weakness is. It does not come with the knowledge of how to use this information to his advantage; he must figure this out himself. However the downside is that Cad's domain permanently prevents him from ever gaining physical strength. He is absurdly weak and lacking in endurance for an adult man, even despite possessing a body made of materials that should be pretty strong, and is unable to gain any points in purely physical skills such as strength, running or endurance. He is also completely immune to any form of magical ability designed to enhance his physical strength, such as hone runes or the mark of Zanik.

The Wooden Boy

Cad's soul inhabits a golem body created by Aeva out of wood, metal and leather. As a result of Aeva's skilled craftsmanship this body looks and moves almost indistinguishably from a human body, but has a number of both positive and negative changes.
  • Cad is not affected by age, nor does he need to eat, drink, breathe or sleep. However he does require daily manual maintenance in order to function properly.
  • Cad cannot bleed out or die from injuries as he has no blood, but possesses no natural regenerative abilities and must manually repair or replace parts of his body if they are damaged.
  • Cad's soul resides in the golem body's head. As long as this part is not destroyed, the rest of it can be removed, damaged or replaced without issue. Any roughly humanoid sized and shaped parts attached to the head will move completely under his control. However if the head is destroyed Cad will instantly die.
  • Cad is unaffected by poisons, diseases, drugs, potions or other substances that were meant to afflict flesh. However he can be affected by rust, termites, and other afflictions that affect material objects.
  • Cad has no sense of smell or taste. He does have a sense of touch, but it is muted.
  • Because of his weakness domain this body is unusually fragile considering the materials it is made from, and can be easily bent or broken just by being punched by an average person. It can however be upgraded with mechanical equipment that Cad can manipulate as if they are a part of his own body.
  • His domain of golems allows Cad's golem body to make small, instinctive movements that should technically be impossible for an artificial body to replicate, such as show subtle facial expressions, blush, twitch, replicate breathing, or even make his hairs stand on end, which altogether make it very difficult to tell that his body is artificial unless one already knows to look for it. However as his body is cold and unusual to the touch physical contact is usually enough to reveal what he is.
  • It is possible to a necromancer to attempt to seize control of his body, however their skill would need to exceed Cad's own necromancy and discipline skills in order to do this.
  • As Cad's body is not made of living flesh Becoming and Graft spells will not directly work on him. While runes can be applied to his body his proximity will not activate them, and so are only worth using as traps. Magic that affects the mind and soul, like Empathy, still works as normal. Some immortal marks may manifest differently on his body, and certain powers that require body parts Cad does not have a substitute for may be unavailable.

Friend of Fiends

The distinction between animal and monster is not always clear. For the purposes of this ability, a monster is described as some form of living creature that is undomesticated, a danger to humans, possesses some kind of unusual natural or magical ability and does not possess a soul (however exceptions can be made depending on circumstances.) Because of this ability monsters act unusually friendly towards Cad, even encouraging him to pet or play games with them, and defend or help him where possible. They feel an instinctive fondness and trust in him that is usually enough to overpower their other hostile instincts except in extreme circumstances. This ability is not perfect mind control however; if Cad mistreats them or prevents them for achieving a goal they are absolutely set on achieving they can still turn against him, but it is a great foundation to build up a trusting relationship on. However the side effects of this power is that domestic animals, such as cats, dogs, horses and pigeons, instinctively feel that cad is a monster and do not like him at all. They will often go out of their way to flee from or make life difficult for him.

The Rev-BellThreadA magic, hand-sized iron bell. This item detects when a minor fracture opens within the same region it is present in by sensing the corrupting influence of the fractures ether on the surrounding flora. When it detects a minor fracture open it begins to ring, and will steadily grow louder the closer it gets to the fracture. If there are multiple minor fractures nearby it will lock onto the nearest one.

Action FigureThreadCad is granted a small marionette-type figure on a stand. It's the sort of thing that artists use to help them when drawing the human form. This one is able to be animated, three times a cycle, and can be placed or will walk to somewhere to sit and gather information for Cad. It is very useful for spying etc as it hears and "records" up to three breaks of information. It then teleports back to Cad and plays out the information in "real time" (so it takes three breaks to show him three breaks) in Cad's head. He must be touching it the whole time for the playback to work.
Pocket PlannerThreadA small book with "Plans, Tasks & To Do" written on the outside. This to-do list helps Cad in his quest for world domination which, as he has noted, is an expensive affair. It shows him hints and tips for making money, the upshot of which is that he gains a 10WP bonus on his Wealth Threads claim each season (as per Pocket Change from Sombran) as long as his Wealth Thread includes this book.
Inside The BoxThreadA box which collapses into a small folded piece approximately the size of a book. It opens up to be rather garish magician's box which, once a cycle can be used by Cad only. He gets in the box, closes the lid and he is teleported home (where he lives) - when the magician's box is opened back where he was, revealing him to be gone, the folded box reappears in Cad's possession.
You Pesky KidsThreadA child's puzzle box. Unopenable by any but Cad, it has the "Bottomless Chest" ability from Sombran. Inside is a pocket dimension where they can hold all their wealth, whether currency or goods. They can open and close the gate to this dimension at will, and unlike things like Domain Bags, the puzzle box cannot be damaged. In addition, this ability acts as a mobile bank and generates interest, an additional 2 WP every season.
Bag of DisguisesThreadA simple cloth bag which contains a Tier 10 Disguise kit. The bag itself is small and unassuming and could easily be hung from a belt. It's far too small to contain all the items it does, but it still does, and they are replenished daily.
The Amazing Technicolour Dream CloakThreadA cloak / cape which acts as a duplicity cape. It will take on any length / design / pattern and furthermore Cad is always comfortably warm / cool in it. Rain doesn't soak him while he's wearing it and - no matter what shape / size it it? It's extra swishy!
Ruin's DisguiseThreadThe heroes of Ascension will recognize Cad, which would be bad for him. Valtharn gives him a ring to interfere with that recognition so that he isn't immediately exposed as a notorious villain while he's still growing his power. It only interferes with the people who were in Ascension, and only interferes with their ability to recognize him from Ascension. If they know him from elsewhere, they'll recognize him from those circumstances, just not the events of Ascension.
Traitor's BladeThreadValtharn enchants Cad's axe, making it a Tier 8 mastercrafted axe. The axe boosts both Cad's Strength and Combat (Axes) skill by one tier while he wields it, allowing him to use the axe more effectively than he otherwise would. This power comes with a cost though, and he needs to make sure the axe is bloodied regularly, or it will lose its enchantment until it gets bloodied again. He can use his own blood or someone elses, the axe isn't picky about where its fuel source comes from.
Agony's CallThreadValtharn gives Cad a horn that he can blow once per cycle. Once blown, the horn calls every savage monster, animal, and wicked Mortal within a mile to the blowers position. These won't necessarily listen to Cad, but they won't attack him either.
Ascension's RiseThreadValtharn gives Cad a necklace made out of a part of the Ascension, still humming with her own power. While he wears it, any injury he inflicts upon another will restore his own stamina, and can even heal wounds, though an injury will only heal of wound of equal or lesser severity.
Ruin's KeyThreadThe Fallen Immortals all had their Emean Realms. Valtharn doesn't need them, she'll make her own, but she crafts a key for Cad. If he presses it against a door, any door, and turns it, that door will open into Kata's Realm. It probably needs a touch up since her death, but it's a better supervillain lair than almost any he could ask for.

Cad lives in the poorly-named Doom Manor, which is only a stone's throw away from Witchwood Graveyard in Almund, Scalvoris. It is full of rich decor and deliberately designed to look dark and gothic, but tries so hard to look like an evil lair that it actually looks a bit silly.

The Ruined World

Thank to the power of the Ruin's Key given to him by Valtharn, Cad is able to access the Emean Realm that once belonged to Kata before her death. It is a bleak realm filled with little but the crumbling ruins of an old civilization, but it serves its new purpose as a secret lair for Cad's ever-growing gang of minions perfectly.
