[Memory] Forging Steel

The Skadiri are notorious for their ruthless cunning when dealing with their enemies--and it turns out that they treat their new recruits the same way.

The cities and villages of Melrath are as varied and diverse as they come. The capital of Raelia is the the jewel of this western kingdom, playing host to a merchants, artisans, Aesir priests, as well as a cut throat political landscape dominated by the nobles of Raelia. To the south in the depths of the Myrkvior Forest lies Melrath's second largest, and oldest city, Fensalir. Here people have learned to live alongside spirits and the natural world by maintaining their loyalty to traditions laid down the first Melrathi. To the east lies the small fishing village of Noatun, and to the western mountains rests the Mer city of Verimeer, the brewing town of Alivilda and the alpine village Vormund.

[Memory] Forging Steel

"Dead."

Lucia staggered backward with a choking noise, gasping and coughing from the "light" tap of the blunted sword against her throat. The big man scowled disapprovingly at the teen. "Do you want to die choking on your own blood?" He waited a moment, as if to let her speak. Since she was too busy choking on the bruising hit, he went on, "No? Then you're doing a piss-poor job of defending yourself."

I don't even want to use a sword! Lucia thought, glaring at the man as she continued to cough and hack. It took a bit or two to get fully under control, before hauling herself back up to her feet. Just in time to have a hard swing nearly take her at the side of the neck. She managed to scramble back and fall onto her rear, then had to throw herself sideways as the sword clacked at where she'd been an instant before. "A soldier isn't going to wait for you to get back up, Lucia," he said, sounding smug as he swung yet again. That one caught Lucia on the arm as she scrambled to her feet--despite the speed of the swings, the man always managed to slow his blow enough to mean it wouldn't do more than leave a nasty bruise. Of course, she was used to bruises by now. Ever since she'd joined the Skadiri, she'd felt like a giant, puffy bruise.

The girl glanced to where her sword lay on the ground...on the far side of her trainer.
