Hélice: Morovas

Hélice: The Island of Morovas
Overview
Image

Of all the islands of Hélice, there is no one island more feared and willfully evaded than the 'Shadow Isle' of Morovas. For one, despite being closer to the equator than any other Helian Isle, Morovas appears to be the coldest due to an endless stream of high velocity winds that appear to cut through the island and harass those who visit it or dwell upon its shores. Further, Morovas sees significantly less sun than the other Helian Isles, draped by an overcast of clouds that appear to permeate much of the island's days. Due to such a stark contrast from the other isles despite such close proximity, many Helians believe Morovas to be cursed.

It would not surprise any Helian onlooker - then - that Morovians worship the Helian God of Darkness and Frost, Phorus. As the only isle that sees snowfall outside of Cylus, and one marred by less favorable agricultural conditions than other islands, Morovians dedicate their lives to the God and beseech him for his mercy constantly. His temples and shrines permeate the island, all of them indoors and most often in caves, due to Phorus' cult-like obscurity.

In terms of population, Morovas has slightly less people than Koros, at the low end of three thousand citizens. The populace is largely human with a decently sized minority of biqaj at around fifteen percent of the population, with virtually no other racial variety. There are more Immortalists than typical of Helice, and the mages of Morovas are - among all of Helice's Isles - the most well-trained. This is likely due to Morovas' history as the first stop for many fleeing Seekers during the Cataclysm, and uniquely one of Rynmere's refugee ships carrying escaping mages shipwrecked upon Morovas' shore on Arc 718, expanding their already skewed ratio of arcanists to the general public.

Like Koros, Morovas is led by a single Lord that has managed to unite the entire island, Lord Wayford. As one of the most notorious figures in all of Helian history - if not the most - few understand his reverence by the people of Morovas, but nonetheless the population of the island is deeply loyal to him and as the man has led them for over a hundred arcs, many expect that he will rule the land until the end of time.

Eliria

One cannot truly explain Eliria without first detailing its Lord, Elias Wayford. Many consider the man to be an artifact of lost times - a man who lived during greater times for the Seekers, before their betrayal by Ellasin Dathlande. As one of the only Stonehearts ever created by the Seekers, Elias was an experiment into Soulbinding that sought deeper understanding on the nature of confining souls -- but with the host's permission. He was an agent to his organization, a watcher and undying sentinel that guarded Seeker interests throughout time as they sought lost knowledge and deeper meaning.

And yet, with their fracturing into the Seekers and the Fist of Arcanis, and eventually the Coven, Elias was made an outcast by his people for being a walking presentation of the dark arts of the Lich. Many sought to eradicate him and even called for a vote for his destruction, one that only narrowly failed. Elias retreated from the Quacian cell of the organization, freshly enraged by the loss of their authority, and sailed to the barely known Isles of Hélice. He traveled to the darkest island and the least inhabited, one he thought deeply suited him and his compulsions, and the cynicism that had begun to unravel him.

And there, Elias wept, until he found peace in the companionship of one of the island women. Her name was Anoura, and though the two never bore children due to Elias' sterility as a living-dead, she channeled the aspiration he'd lost within his sorrow. Through his love for her, Elias gained fondness towards the islanders and eventually, they chose him as their Lord. Though Elias has never produced any heirs and never will, he has led the people of Morovas since Arc 602. As a Stoneheart he is a considerably powerful mage and warrior, and with his inherent ability to stave off all forms of destruction, many have labeled him the champion of Adrius.

Eliria was constructed around Elias' wife's old village, with a massive castle being born that serves as residence to all of the Morovians who dwell there. Eliria is the heart of Morovas and is one of Helice's largest settlements in terms of population, with nearly half of the entire population of the island dwelling in the castle. It is said that the castle is arcane in nature due to its builders and many view it as a sort of utopia; communal, safe, well-built and supposedly impenetrable, with a warm and insulated interior of opulent means.

The castle does carry its own name, despite often being labeled as synonymous with Eliria itself, for good reason. It is called 'Castle Stoneheart' by the locals.
