[Sirothelle] Lore

A City Ruled By Fire
Image
It was a city that began simply through turmoil and suffering. Near the beginnings of man, when the Immortals first became aware of the existence of humans on Idalos, some believed the mortals to be the cause of strife and death amongst the Immortals, when all but one of the original eight shattered. Faldrun was one of those with the most passionate hatred towards the mortal beings. With little thought he brought down a similar pain that he had experienced upon the humans that inhabited the region around the Heart of the World.

They perished in fire, only ash and bones and ruins left behind as a sign that anyone had called this place home. And for a time, the area around the only volcano on Idalos was left barren, a wasteland. Returning to the other Immortals, Faldrun learnt of a dispute between the creations of the original eight. Some, like Faldrun, found the existence of these mortals abhorrent, and wished to annihilate all, as punishment for the death of their creators. Some were indifferent. But Faldrun found himself distressed to find that some were in favour of supporting the humans.

This dispute was never resolved, and it began a war that has never ended. In search of an army to assist with his cause, Faldrun returned to the Heart of the World, where he resurrected those he had killed. But most did not return as humans - they returned as something far worse, as if their return to life had placed a curse on them. Inside them lived a fire, one that, if provoked, could be the cause of their demise. It was a constant reminder that they lived at the mercy of Faldrun.
Image
It is this fire that rules the lives of all those in Sirothelle, for even those of different races are in danger of being caught in the flames of another. Many times the city was destroyed and rebuilt, until it was decided that Sirothelle should be constructed from stone. In essence, the city is no different to any other; all mortals are fighting to survive, if to a lesser degree than the Aukari. The race was one of the first to enforce slavery, and they will use any race for the purposes of aiding their patron in his war against other Immortals. A resourceful and — peoples, they have designed a number of methods in assisting Faldrun, and are not above any means of keeping his favour.

Some of these methods, along with the very nature of the Aukari, have caused them to be one of the most mistrusted - perhaps even despised - mortal races. But the city, being so close to a volcano, has an abundance of natural resources, and many cities are forced to maintain trading agreements with the Aukari. Metal ores such as tin, silver, gold, copper, zinc and lead can be found in the volcanic rock. Precious stones such as diamonds, whilst relatively uncommon, are not unheard of and, of course, sulphur gases are found in abundance, which can be collected and solidified.

Because of the heat that Sirothelle is exposed to, it is one of the few cities with natural (and filtered) hot water, which, if nothing else, makes the city safe and sanitised. A final advantage of the city’s location is the abundance of fertile soil. The land that was once barren is now rich in minerals, leaving good crops each year and some fruits endemic to the area are also exported to cities across Idalos. There are, of course, many disadvantages to living so close to a volcano, the most obvious being the gases and fumes that rise from the cracks in the land around Sirothelle. These are areas that all Aukari know, and ard are taught to avoid from a young age.
History of Sirothelle
Image
Sirothelle is a city that has endured much throughout the passage of time, from multiple collapses, to scarcity of food, and the ever prevalent order to please their ultimate ruler and father, Faldrun. Starting out as any city would, Sirothelle was a small collection of villagers that made the mountains their home. Living so close to the volcano provided them with protection from the harsh winter storms and hot springs full of minerals and safe water. The village thrived, though its prosperity was cut short by the very immortal they serve today. Even though they were resurrected from their harsh, painful deaths, the village folk would never see the freedom they once had.

Obstacles were met time and time again as none of the villagers knew how to control the inferno within them. They would rebuild their homes and halls with lumber and iron only to have their structures burn within a matter of days. Their beginning was harsh and cruel. Though they worked as hard as they could, their failure only met with death by the hands of their wrathful father. Faldrun didn't have the patience to watch them fail for he needed an army to destroy those who opposed him and sadly, the fear of death he instilled within his newly created race pushed them to find alternatives and succeed.

Many arcs went by while the Aukari grew in numbers. They'd finally converted to a special kind of stone material and constructed every structure with it to prevent the risk of fire. The race thrived, moving quickly from a small town to a growing city. During this time, Faldrun controlled all aspects of the city's government from its military force to its education and economy. His lack of experience was apparent and while many sought to council him, most were burned alive for their suggestions. It didn't take long before the city faced an obstacle once more. Sickness had spread throughout the streets. Many people lay dying in the alleyways and sanctuaries within the city, covered in splotches of green and brown bumps that eventually burst and, like acid, burned the victim till their flesh was nearly melted to the bone.
Image
There was no cure for this illness and after the first thousand or so fell by its hands did Faldrun order every sick man, woman, and child to be rounded up near the heart of the world. There was mass hysteria as Aukari and humans alike were dragged from their homes toward the heart of the world. Those who couldn't walk were thrown into wagons and wheeled there. Some attempted to escape the city for they knew what was to come, but all attempts to live were unfortunately in vain. Those who did not meet the end of their fate by lava met it by sickness. The Aukari who survived such a cruel act nearly rebelled against Faldrun. It was then that the Immortal chose to give the people some form of hope in efforts to calm their depression.

The people who showed the most devotion to him were not only promoted into ranks of power, their loved ones were resurrected once more. Faldrun proclaimed that any who choose to fight against him will meet the darkness of the other world in eternal fire and turmoil while those who remain faithful servants to his cause will receive to them all things lost. Though the people were stricken with grief, they trusted his word— having witnessed the resurrection of fallen comrades at the deity's hands. So they gave to him mind, body, and soul, wanting and wishing for the gifts that he could offer to them.

And so the city slowly rebuilt itself while Faldrun remained in the background, keeping close eye on Sirothelle and the Aukari who journeyed from it to reek destruction in his name. It didn't take long for Sirothelle to become the enemy of several different locations and quickly became a race outlawed in several regions. This didn't stop them from infiltrating enemy territory and killing several known immortals.

[Sirothelle] Lore

Appearance
Image
Because of the nature of the Aukari, who sometimes have no control over the conditions of their very own bodies, much of the city of Sirothelle is made primarily of stone components. Years of experience and destruction have taught these fiery peoples that building their homes out of flammable materials, such as wood and straw because, invariably, the structures do not last that long. And more often than not, if one building becomes alight, then the adjacent buildings would not be far behind. Even artificially moulded bricks are in danger of being damaged, so the Aukari use pure stone in their construction.

Unlike artificially created stones, the natural materials that are used by the Aukari, when weathered by the elements, are softened. Each building is created from cut stones, large and small. Inside, furniture of all forms is also comprised of the quarried material, most purposely built straight into each of the rooms. Any soft furnishings are economical and easy to replace.

Though the inhabitants of Sirothelle use stone for obvious practical reasons, they have found the aesthetic quality in it. The city itself, from a distance, looks very dark, cold and grey, because of the stone structures. Close up, however, even the most obtuse observer would be able to discern the colours that are splashed throughout the grey rock. Streaks of reds and oranges dominate these colours - a consequence of the nature of the igneous stone. However blues and whites are also visible throughout. When rain hits the city, the colours are accentuated, and the city takes on a truly beautiful appearance.

It would take a truly obtuse person traversing the city not to notice the sheer amount of sandbags placed strategically around the city. They are there, of course, for practical purposes, rather than aesthetic, for even though the city has been designed and built to be inflammable, the Aukari import the sand for the purpose of trying to save personal items. There is also, surprisingly, a large amount of black tar stored around the outskirts of the city. These vats of tar are kept at a height, and a guardsman will always be within a few feet of it, with no less than two sandbags at his disposal. A highly flammable agent, it is stored ready for use as an offensive weapon, should the city come under siege. Other signs that the city is prepared for war include weapons on display, contained behind wrought iron that, to a causal observer looks unbreakable, however most all grown Aukari know that the iron will come loose from the stone if a few strong men were to exert force on it. The Aukari expect to be attacked, and have prepared the city's defences as best they can.

Built into the sides of the Heart of the World, the city has not been built on flat ground. Unsurprisingly, the more affluent members of Aukari society are nestled on the higher points of the city, closer to the volcano, and to what they believe to be the home of Faldrun. In a similar vein, all public buildings, as well as the authoritarian ones, are found in this area. In increments, the city spreads down into the poor. However no Aukari in the city can be considered destitute, given the lands around the city and volcano, which are green with crops each year.
Climate
Image
The climate around Sirothelle is dry, the air sometimes containing bits of smoke and ash while the skies above are often grey or blackened by the billowing smoke from the heart of the world. Sirothelle is protected from the harsh weather Zi'da and Cylus bring, however they are not spared the snow. During the hot cycle, Sirothelle can be a rather unbearable place to reside in what with the high temperature coupled with the heat from the volcano and local hot springs. Due to this, aqueducts leading from the northwest were built to stock the bath houses with cool water during this cycle. The city can see a variety of weather as well, from snow, hail, rain, and the occasional hurricane.
Surroundings
Image
Sirothelle is home to many natural hot springs that contain minerals that are both healthy for the skin and safe to drink. The Aukari use the hot springs to sooth the aches of the fire, especially after intense training. There are some hot springs that are used for cooking and preserving food, as the temperature of the water is too hot to to bathe in. These hot springs may be use to harvest a special kind of mineral that is utilized when fireproofing leather and other kinds of material. Needless to say, the hot springs surrounding Sirothelle are a major part of how the city and its citizens function.

The aqueducts also surround Sirothelle, cutting through the city to dump water into a reservoir. The reservoir is the center that connects the underground tunnels to push water throughout and from Sirothelle. The aqueducts stem from the northwest river that runs down to the south, near Ne'haer and it is maintained by mostly human workers. Trained Aukari may be tasked with guarding the workers while repairs are being made to the aqueduct or its reservoir and though there are gates along it to ensure no one is able to get into Sirothelle by way of the aqueducts, one can never be too sure.

Beyond the city walls, thick forests reach over the horizon, full of deadly plants, animals, and things otherworldly. Aukari are warned never to venture beyond the walls at night and never to go alone. Though sometimes missions call to ignore this warning, many Aukari have gone out into the woods, never to return. Scouting parties are sent out for them but come up empty handed. During the day, many hunters and gathers are armed with some trained Aukari to help protect them from what lives within the forests.

[Sirothelle] Lore

Demographics
Given the nature of the city, it is hardly a surprise that the vast majority of free peoples in Sirothelle are Aukari (or half-Aukari). As Faldrun's stronghold, the vast majority of humans - and a substantial portion of beings from other races - avoid this city. Only those with business with Sirothelle venture there, and most do not stay for long... in fact, any outsiders staying for longer than a few days is met with suspicion. However there is a very substantial portion of permanent human inhabitants in the city. Almost all are slaves, bought or bred in the city limits and forced to work in the substantial network of mines, quarries and fields around the city.
Religion
At the centre of everything in Sirothelle is the God of Fire and Turmoil, Faldrun. Sirothelle is the stronghold of this God and everything that happens in it happens purely for his benefit. Sirothelle is utterly devoted to Faldrun, their one and only Immortal. Though there may be some who worship other Immortals as well, everyone in the city is expected to follow Faldrun, or face the consequences. It is a deeply ingrained belief, and all Aukari children are indoctrinated into their faith for the Immortal of Fire.

The Aukari are highly religious in the aspect of gaining Faldrun's favour. Through rituals, prayer, and their connection of fire are the Aukarians able to communicate to the Immortal. It is Faldrun, after all, who protects his peoples from perishing from their own fires, and each year he appears before the Aukari to judge his race. Here, he decides whether or not they are deserving of his continued blessing. It is for this reason that part of the Aukari’s faith is ingrained in fear. The Aukari race, though created accidentally, has become profoundly beneficial to Faldrun, in his war against the other Immortals, and he enjoys complete dominion over the city of Sirothelle.

However, even though Faldrun is the ultimate ruler of all those in Sirothelle, he doesn't see himself as a leader. He does not believe in complete micromanagement of his peoples, nor does he have enough interest in the lives of the Aukari. This is why the Zatkai is important. The Zatkai leads the Aukari and serves as the earthly vessel in maintaining Faldrun’s influence over the city. Because, ultimately, Faldrun cares about the Aukari only enough to ensure that not all of them perish from their gifts. He does nothing to support the city, however, such as offering protection from the dangers of the volcano or from the threat of outside forces. His main mission was to revive them and use them as weapons against the other Immortals which he has succeeded in doing so thus far.

One of the first Zatkais to serve the city realised that if you give people relative safety, security and at least the illusion of prosperity, they become docile, ignorant and easily manipulated. Sirothelle never seemed like a paradise compared to the outside world, but it was designed such that the Aukari in the city (if they did their duty to Faldrun) would never go without. Faldrun also promised that, if they worked hard to gain his favour, he would gift to them a blessing that would help them to control the fire within them. This was, however, a ploy he used to control them.

The relationship between the Aukari is one of manipulation. Some see it as a right, true, and honest relationship while others see if for what it really is: enslavement. Thus, there is a very obvious divide in the mentality of the Aukari who live within Sirothelle. All must worship Faldrun, yes. But there are some who resist this by not joining the occult or finding very vague, illusive reasons to be away from the city. They cannot openly protest this either, or express their dislike of the Immortal to anyone within the city because this could get them killed. If they marry outside of their race, abandon it, disown their heritage and teachings, or forsake Sirothelle and the Aukari all together, they are hunted down and exposed of.

[Sirothelle] Lore

Education
All Aukari-born children are offered a state-sanctioned education, and are taught in large, institutionalised schools. Education starts from as young as four for the most ambitious of parents, though all children must be attending a class by the age of six. The three schools are:

Parvos for the junior;
Reyula for the Crafters, Artisans, Non-Combatants;
Oikeia for the Fighters and Spycraft.
Kauvi for the Domain Mages.

In order to serve Faldrun to the best of their abilities, it is the belief of the state, and educators, that children must learn the ability and intelligence to think for themselves, so that they may operate independently when they reach adulthood. It is for this reason that all Aukari-born children are first taught the basics of reading, writing and numeracy, which continues until the children hit puberty. It is assumed that, beyond this point, the mind has moulded itself and if they haven’t learnt the basics by this point, they are not going to. It is at this point in an Aukari’s life that the Occult has its largest intake, where it can see the potential of the next generation.

At puberty, the school divides into two - an elite institution, where the initiates of the Occult, potential guardsmen and artisan apprentices attend, and a comprehensive institution, where those with little potential or ambition are placed. In both schools, each Aukari is pushed to their limits, and it is not unheard of for some to forfeit their places in either institution as they fail or excel at tests.

From puberty, these tests are taken twice a year, at the ends of the two seasons of Saun and Cylus. Failure of two consecutive tests results in removal of either skill, regardless of extenuating circumstances, though excelling at three consecutive tests will see an elevation from the comprehensive to the elite institution. Those who fail to retain their place at the comprehensive school are thought of as hopeless, and are sent immediately to work in what can only be described as drudge work, most often for the rest of their lives. Only those who impress their superiors which an uncommon or required skill might be given the chance to elevate their status through an apprenticeship.

[OOC Note: it needs to be clear that whilst I use terms like ‘high proficiency’ and ‘excels’, this is an In Character guide, and should not deter new players, as we are all aware that there is a limit to starting skills. The descriptions and city structure is not designed around the OOC mechanics of the game. That being said… no starting player will be allowed to begin play as an assassin. Use your common sense or ask the local Prophet.]
Employment
With only a few exceptions, Sirothelle offers a very fair society. It is not a society based on equality by any means, and there are many who live poor, borderline impoverished lives, but none can disagree that it is fair. All rewards are based on success and skill, and even a child of the lowest Aukari has the opportunity to excel. The overwhelming majority of Aukari serve their Immortal proudly, and live easy lives, working jobs that they are good at. These people fulfil roles that are necessary for the city to function. They do not have the same honour that working for the Occult has, but there is no denying that these roles carry a level of respect from all in the city, including those in the Occult, purely because the Occult would not be able to carry out their own roles were there no one to run the city on it’s most primitive level.

These jobs can range from maintaining the local tavern to carving intricate designs on jewellery, and everything in between. Skilled professionals of any form fall into this category, and they make up the bulk of the population of Sirothelle. Most Aukari-born humans, if they haven’t left the city, end up performing such roles. This is normally because they are ostracised from a young age and, thus, excel in their education in order to please their families and prove their worth. However there is always prejudice against them, and few, if any, are able to pass through the glass ceiling that holds them back from joining the Occult.

Finally, those who prove to be of exceptional stock are trained and educated to become members of the Aukari Occult. Some join from as young as five years old, though most are initiated at puberty. Those destined to join the Occult receive training in a variety of skills, and all must excel in a combat related class. Their basic education is also continued, as well as the opportunity for a few to develop skills in politics and foreign cultures and languages, ready for when they are sent out into the world. Because many artisans attend the same institution, they learn some of the same skills that members of the Occult will end up having.

The Aukari Occult is an umbrella term, which is formed of two factions. The first is the more visible of the two - the City Guard. All soldiers have high proficiency in at least one martial skill. They form the law enforcement faction, as well as the military, and constantly patrol the city and man the walls.

The less overt is the Occult itself, though it is what springs to mind when the Occult is spoken of. These people are the silent assassins, the ‘diplomats’, some of whom are rarely in the city. They also have some presence in the city and, though they are not known for their ability in combat, they are to be respected, answering only to the Council of Seven. They are masters of subterfuge and deception, and rhetorical skills are valued highly among them, as they work to set cultures against one another, and against the Immortals.

[Sirothelle] Lore

Government
Sirothelle is rule primarily by Faldrun, who is one of the more involved Immortals when it comes to their creations. This is not done through any semblance of love, however, for Faldrun created his race as a means to an end, rather than through guilt at his initial genocide. The Aukari exist only to further his goals, thus he is keen to monitor them.

To see to the general running and maintenance of the city is his appointed Council of Eight, known locally simply as The Eight, who rule by the grace of Faldrun with an iron fist. The Zatkai has overall authority over the council, and therefore the entire city and it's populace. Assisting him are seven Councillors. They each have a specific appointment, where the manage a specific area of running the city. As a hard and fast rule, The Eight are untouchable, each favoured by Faldrun, who has immense say in who joins the Council. The system is not a democratic one, much like the rest of the city.

For more information please see the Sirothelle NPC List.
Law
In Sirothelle, inhabitants have rights, and are protected by the laws that have been set down by the Zatkai and Council of Seven. These laws are specific to the Aukari, in an attempt to protect them so that they may serve Faldrun at full strength. These laws are subject to review with each new Zatkai who is placed in power, and the current one - a man of the world with a shrewd outlook - understands better than most that technicalities can be pesky things, particularly in a city filled with Aukari. In order to use the laws to his whim, he has only decreed one:

Do not steal.

It is with this rule that the law is open to interpretation by all, but previous demonstrations of public punishments have left the citizens to know to think before acting brashly. The law is one that includes stealing a life, a possession or food. For some people, the law stretches as far as to forbid stealing the bed of another through adultery.

Sirothelle’s laws are heavily based on “An Eye for An Eye” - the punishment will, as a general rule, always fit the crime. That is not to say, however, that there is no corruption, and it is not completely unheard of for those with power to influence the law to temper their own punishments, or inflict greater ones on others. Depending on the crime, law breakers are rightfully punished. Murder and heresy always lead to death, no matter what. Stealing depends on what was taken, and punishment can range from a whipping or a fine, through to losing a hand. Enslavement is a possibility in extreme cases.

[OOC Note]: Whether Aukari, slave or another race, murder for the sake of murder is not acceptable OOC in this city. With good development and reason for murder, we'd love to see a bit of death, but what we will not accept is a brand new player rocking on up and committing murder in their very first thread. It is a lazy shorthand to appear "badass" and it's not appreciated.

As such, as a courtesy, we would like it if you would fling a private message in the direction of a local Prophet, sharing a synopsis of the plot, just so that we are forewarned or can advise you. If you neglect to let us know, the local Prophets reserve the right to intervene in such a thread and arrest relevant PCs, with the possibility of execution. Don't say you weren't warned.

[Sirothelle] Lore

The Aukari Occult
The military arm of Sirothelle is one of the smallest in Idalos, but it is nonetheless a formidable force. The Occult makes up about three quarters of all the military in Sirothelle and is, in turn, split into two separate units: The Occult and the Infantry.

The Infantry makes up the majority of the brawn. They are the fighters, the ones trained to fear no foe, nor pain. Considered to be the more understanding of Faldrun's military arm, the Infantry are ruthless and cold. They execute orders with a unique precision which makes them appear to be nothing more than robots. Some have questioned how their life expectancy (assuming they do not fall in combat) appears to be fractionally longer than the average Aukari, and it has been postulated that they have been brainwashed to the extent that they have no emotion, reducing their chance of combustion.

The Occult is less visible - in some cases, members of the Occult are not even known to the general public. They are the brains: some have combative training and experience, but the majority work in terms of deception, politics and subterfuge.

[Sirothelle] Lore

Slavery
It is no surprise to discover that the vast majority of inhabitants of Sirothelle are of the Aukari race. Records are generally not kept for other races, but it is not unlikely that many other races have been known to stay or live in the city. Most are slaves, this is an undisputed fact. But that is not to say that any others who come to the city are automatically enslaved. Most simply try to avoid the city.

Those who do visit often do for the purposes of trade, most often arriving with goods that Sirothelle cannot produce, and leaving with the vast array of produce that the volcanic-based city has to offer. These people do not receive generous hospitality, but they are respected and their custom is greatly appreciated, for trade helps to keep the city afloat.

Sirothelle has an abundance of slaves in the city, most serving to work farming the crops or mining for metals. There are few personal slaves, as the nature of the Aukari means that they believe such slaves to be superfluous. Elsewhere Aukari might be enslaved, but within Sirothelle all Aukari are immune to traditional slavery. On occasion, one might work for free in order to pay of debts to the state or an individual person, but it will only ever be a temporary agreement and they will always maintain the full rights that all others have.

True slaves, however, do not share these rights, and are subjects to harsh lives at the whims of their masters. They are subject to any and all laws and punishments of the state, as well as ones set by their owners, and they enjoy none of the protections that an Aukari receives. Slaves are only as valuable as their skillset, and the majority of slaves have no specialist skills, as they are used primarily for hard labour. The Aukari believe that if one were to die, it is easily replaceable. They encourage mating between the slaves, to the extent that almost all slaves in the city were born into their positions, rather than imported.

It is possible for a slave of exceptional talent or ability to gain freedom In order to do this, however, they need to be noticed by an Aukari of any rank. The difficulty is that there are so many slaves that the Aukari no longer see them as individuals, only as a giant workforce. Most of those who are noticed are noticed for their beauty - such slaves are the ones who become personal property, or are sold to traders for a hefty price.

OOC Note

All slaves, whether NPC or PC, must have monies exchanged for their complete value. If you do not pay for the slave, Prophets reserve the right to penalise PCs of money in awards, until payment has been made.

Being a slave comes with some OOC perks (the biggest one being that they do not have to pay for expenses. However, it is the strong belief of the Prophets that there should be a penalty for this perk that slaves have. And we believe this penalty is a fair one. History shows us that slaves are property, thus they cannot own property. Idalos should be no different, therefore slaves in this world are not entitled to own any property of significant value (other than clothing or small trinkets). They must also have just cause to have any monies in their ledger. OOC and IC reasoning must add up.

All slaves/Masters must follow certain rules in Idalos:
-PCs with NPC slaves must pay for their slave's expenses.
-PCs with PC slaves must pay for their slave's expenses.
-PCs with NPC Masters must have said NPCs approved by a Prophet or through Narrator Support. If a player is active in any given season, they must write at least one 'job' thread so show their servitude in order to earn their keep.
-PC slaves upon starting will not start with any amount of money in their ledger.
-Unless under special circumstances, PC slaves who are captured post-creation will also lose money.
-Any items of high value (ie other than clothes/trinkets) will also be lost upon slavery.
-It is at a Master's discretion whether 'pocket-money' is granted to a slave.
-For ease, any items bought for a slave may be listed in a slave PC's CS, but it belongs to the Master officially and the Master/Prophet reserves the right to remove said item.
-Items purchased for a slave by an NPC Master must be agreed upon by a Prophet.
-Any wages earned by a PC slave will be given immediately to a PC Master (as normal, this must be discussed with a Prophet first).
-Some PC slaves (who meet certain criteria) are entitled to retain half of their wages for their ledgers.
