[Treth] Lessons in Beauty

35th Saun, 718

Tei'serin was more than ready for the trials filled with constant sunlight and unbearable heat to be over. She liked the warm weather as much as anyone did, but the heat of Saun was taxing at best. And knowing that her poor daughter was suffering under its affects made her dislike it even more. Ei'ryl was the opposite of most children she had met. The tiny girl thrived in the cold. In fact, the colder it was, the happier she was. But in the heat of Saun, Ei'ryl had no energy at best. She was also prone to weakness, and tended to get sick far more often in the brutal heat than she ever did in the cold of Cylus.

But the Art Festival was a bright spot in the seemingly endless, relentless heat. As Tei'serin and her family rode into the village, it was all that they could talk about. Her mother was bringing Ei'ryl in so she could act as a chaperone when Tei'serin brought her class to see the stalls set up by the local artists. The Gardeners would be acting as chaperones as well, as would a few of the other parents. Without them, the trip simply wouldn't be possible. Tei'serin knew from experience that trying to take the class out on any kind of a trip was fool hardy at best without chaperones to help her keep an eye on the children. Her students were good kids, but kids were kids. Even good children could get carried away by excitement, and act out as a result.

Keiaris and Meiarin talked excitedly among themselves. Tei'serin knew that both of the girls had been saving up their nels for the past season in the hopes of being able to buy a picture for their room. Sorin was more interested in seeing the actors and musicians that would be at the festival, but Tei'serin could see the light in his eyes that told her he was just as excited for this school trip as his younger sisters were.

They were not the first to arrive at the school, but there weren't many students waiting for them, at least. Tei'serin let the children play while she greeted the other chaperones, and spoke with them about what she hoped to achieve during the festival. She wanted each of the parents to give the kids some time to see what they wanted to see, but she also wanted them to see some of the art that was going to be displayed, not just listen to the music, and watch the actors. Their assignment for the trial would depend on it since she was going to ask them to write about an artist of their choice. The younger children would have to pick one particular work of art and tell the class about it rather than write anything. Either way, she wanted to know that they had spent some time paying attention to the true focus of this festival; the local art, and the artists who had produced it. It was Tei'serin's firm belief that art was part of a society's culture, and that culture was important...even in farming communities like Treth. Perhaps even especially in farming communities like Treth.

Bonus experience approved by Chronicle, to be given to the following character(s) involved in this thread, only upon the completion of the review, where the character(s) demonstrated celebration of the holiday, Art Festival, on Saun 35th, Arc 718. The details of this this holiday include: The market place of Ne'haer is turned into an art fair, where local artists set up stalls to show their wares. Additionally, many actors and musicians will perform on the main stage, making this a festival that celebrates the creativity of Ne'haerians.

Bonus Experience Upon Review Completion:
Knowledge
Ne'haer Holiday: Art Festival
+2 Bonus Skill Points
Free Item: Vhalar's Paintbrush -- At the end of a character's thread they'll find a paint brush given to them by a stranger, one that seems plain and ordinary in comparison to others. However when used the paintbrush creates almost life like illustrations, as colors seem more vibrant and mysteriously animistic when observed closely. Note that this is not Vhalar's personal paintbrush, just named after the Immortal, and cannot be sold or given to another character.

When the last few stragglers arrived, Tei'serin split the class up into groups, and assigned a chaperone to each one. Keiaris and Meiarin really wanted to be in the group that she and her mother would be escorting, so she allowed that. Sorin wanted to go with the group that Mr. and Mrs. Gardener were going to escort, and she allowed that as well. Tei'serin told her students how she expected them to behave, and what their homework for the trial would be. Finally, she told them to have fun. With that said, she and her mother led their own group into the village square.

Some festivals lend themselves to being educational tools more readily than others. Fortunately, this festival is one of them. Tei'serin mused as she stopped at the first table and examined a painting that one of her neighbors had painted.

The canvas had been divided into quarters. In each one, the same field had been painted. Each quarter of the canvas depicted the field in a Different state. In the top left, it appeared as it would in mid to late Ashan; in full bloom. The top right showed it as it be seen in Saun. And from there, it progressed into Vhalar, and finally into Cylus. Tei'serin recognized that field. It was the one that separated their two farms. The field was several acres long, so you couldn't see the other farm from her window, or vice versa. But she had spent a great deal of time walking in that field over the arcs. She loved that field.

"How did you learn to draw?"

Tei'serin was drawn out of her own thoughts by that simple question. The artist mumbled shyly, and Tei'serin didn't get the chance to hear the answer. But that didn't matter. What did matter was that Cally had asked the question. It told Tei'serin that the girl might be interested in learning to draw herself. And that only proved to her that exposing children to art at a young age could encourage creativity.

"Ms. Nji'ryn?"

"Yes, Keiaris?"

"I want to learn how to draw, too. Will you teach us?"

"I don't really know how to draw either, Keiaris. But maybe we could ask around while we are here, and see if some of the local artists would be willing to give us a lesson or two?"

That wasn't a half bad idea. They would have to pay any artist who was willing to teach them, of course. But perhaps, if enough of the students were interested, she could ask each of the parents to contribute something. It was something to think about, anyway.

"I'd like that."

"Then maybe we should look around some more so you can pick out your favorite artists? We can ask the other kids who their favorite artists were too, and maybe we could ask some of them, okay?"

"Yeah!" Keiaris said excitedly.

As Tei'serin and her group moved to another stand, they could hear the sweet strains of a popular song fill the air. It was a haunting ballad that was almost universally loved in Treth. The song had the power to really make the listener feel what the person who was playing it wanted them to feel if in the hands of someone who was skilled in the use of an instrument. They found Sorin listening to the song in rapt fascination. Tei'serin realized that he must have gotten separated from the rest of his group when he had stopped to listen to the song. That was okay. She would just keep her brother with her until they met up with his group again.

Music really is a language that transcends all boundaries, isn't it? she mused.

A group of people had gathered to listen to the song. Young, old, citizen of Treth, or traveler...it didn't seem to matter. People of all ages were listening to the song together, and enjoying it equally. When she looked around at the various stands surrounding her and realized that the same could be said about the people who had come to look at the art being shown by the local artists, she smiled.

And if music is a language that transcends all boundaries, then the same can be said for art. Beauty is beauty whether the person looking at is a human from Rynmere, an Avriel from Athart, or a Sev'ryn from Desnind. Beauty, no matter what form it comes in is beauty.

Tei'serin tried to keep track of the time while and her mother led their group from one stand to the next. It wasn't easy, though. There was so much to see, and Tei'serin was no different than her students. She wanted to see it all. In the end, it wasn't until she noticed that some of the artists were starting to gather up their work, and close up shop that Tei'serin realized how hate it was getting.

It was with some reluctance that she switched focus from enjoying the stands and shows to rounding up the other groups. Once the class was back together at the school, she reminded them of what their homework was, and dismissed them for the trial.
