Korik and Gennadiya meet at the Tried Plunge

This is a city located on the coast of western Idalos and stands as a pillar of light against the dark cliff faces surrounding it. Ne'haer is considered a port city for ships as well as the last stop for most seafarers adventuring to locate the Iulure Isles. For this, it is nicknamed "Death's Door". In contrast to its nickname, this city focuses mostly on religious values and rituals for the protection of the immortals watching over their city. Ne'haer is also a city booming with trade and nobility, as well as jobs and plenty of opportunities to advance in skills and crafts.

The Plunge

Fri Apr 26, 2019 7:55 pm

30 Trial of Zi’da, Era 716

Gennadiya stood at the docks of Ne’hear bundled up against the cold. She stood her back ramrod straight by an elderly man who wore the blue robes of her order. She stood there the warm cloak hanging around her the only thing exposed to the elements was her face. Her checks had a slight pink flush to them because of the cold. Her hair actually had only two braids today each was small and on either side of her face framing it. The rest of her hair cascaded down her back but the effect was ruined as the cloak covered from the neck down.

Gennadiya expression was pleasant, but she felt this event was taking place way to early and it was way too cold. That was the point though. It was called the Tried swim after the immortal of Ice. The whole point was to prove how manly you were, by jumping into the frigid harbor water with nothing more than their skivvies. Then they had to swim back and not die of hypothermia. Gennadiya and her companion were there to make sure that the men got dried and warmed up, and be there is something did happen.

Her companion was watching as the competition was preparing to start, there would be a prize of course, when he leaned closer to her and said. “I remember when I was young, and made this jump.” Gennadiya turned at looked at his her expression briefly surprised.

“You don’t actually support this?” Gennadiya asked.

Mipel grinned and looked at her. “Spoken like a healer.” He said.

“I believe we have the same occupation.” Gennadiya said calmly, but there was a hint of humor.

“Naa, I started life as a city guard.” He said with a wave of his hand. “If feel into healing while patching up my fellows after a pirate assault. From there I eventually became a doctor, but the point here is I didn’t get all that compassionate preventative training you got.” Gennadiya raised an eyebrow at the elderly man. He gave her and old man cackle at the look. “You will be an excellent wife some day.”

Once he was done he spoke again. “I agree with ya, doing stupid things just to do stupid things is just stupid.” Genna thought no one else could have gotten away with repeated us of the same word. “But not doing something dangerous just because it might be dangerous is narrow minded.” Well at least he didn’t us stupid as a described word again.

“I agree, children should climb trees, children should learn to swim, but really what none stupid reason can there be to do this?” Genna asked.

“Releasing male aggression. Instead of the having fist fights they can prove themselves in a controlled contest that gives them bragging rights for the next arc.” Mipel commented as he pulled his own cloak tighter.

Gennadiya turned away to look over the contestant and wondered about what she had just heard. Genna didn’t have any brothers, she did have her father and his assistant who was like a brother, but she hadn’t ever seen him interact with him male friends, so the male world was a bit of mystery to her. This might actually be educational.

It was a challenge. A challenge issued by the people of the city. A challenge to prove yourself a man among men. The task was simple, dive into the water and return to shore. Korik was a man of many traits and flaws, while his swimming might not have been the strongest. He believed that he could will his way to shore with ease. Besides he couldn't turn down the chance to prove himself could he?

With that he had set out alone. His brother was tied up in something that Korik couldn't well be bothered with. So he set out to prove himself on the chilly day. A cloak pulled over his body to keep the cold off as he walked down the street. The cloth hiding the simple black clothing he wore beneath. The muscles in his body shook and shivered as he made his way down the streets of Na'Haer.

The large bodied Lotharro, grinned widely and nodded a greeting at people as he passed. Excitement warmed his body at the thought of a challenge. Confidence drifted off of his body. He was a man of strength, both in body and in will. He had heard that healers would be in place if anyone need them. As he approached the docks he spotted people gathering. Stopping for a short moment to glance over, what he could only assume was his competition. Most seemed to be of ample skill on their own. A few seemed as excited as him and other seemed to have been talked into it.

He made his way towards the group of people. Passing a woman, bundled against the cold, and a man stood next to her. He paused for a moment to offer them a smile. "Nice day for a swim" he said before giving them a nod and walking away towards the larger group. When he got in position, the man dropped his cloak and removed his shirt, revealing the tanner skin that laid beneath it.

Gennadiya watched as a late coming marched passed them. He was a large man, Gennadiya would guess a Lotharro based upon the slight larger than normal muscle build. Her sapphire blue eyes watch him with amusement as he seemed to skip in excitement. He didn’t skip but there was something similar in his step. He was also a stranger.

Gennadiya recognized by sight many of the men who came to this event. She had seen them around as she went about her visits. The Lotharro stopped next to them and offered them a greetings. Gennadiya nodded her head back. “By the Sunrise it is a nice trial” she said with a friendly smile. She might have though the whole activity silly, but she wasn’t a scowler. Mipal grinned at the young man. “With I could join you, but my ticker would stop the moment I found that cold water.” He said chuckling.

The two watched as he walked up and joined the waiting crowd. It was then that the master of ceremonies called the crowd to attention. He looked around his bearded face grinning broadly. “Well boys.” He called. “It’s that time of the arc again.” There were cheers from the crowd at large. Gennadiya wasn’t loud but she did join in the cheering.

“It looks like we have last arc’s champion.” He said pointing to a athletic young man who raised his hands triumphantly. “Lets see how you do Eralis. I see some young blood ready to take you on.”

Eralis called some response that Gennadiya failed to hear in the laughing and the cheers. She poked Mipal, “Come on lets get to our station.” Gennadiya walked over and to the spot where the challengers would be climbing out of the water. She had two jobs, keep the women folk in line. They always had their own blankets and wanted to talk their menfolk. Apparently in the past some poor men had to do the challenge twice because there women folk tackled them once they got out. Her second responsibility was to supply blankets to the men who were independent or whose women folk had forgot.

Gennadiya stood ready, her posture straight, but not in that ridged way that made people feel uncomfortable. A number of the men did glance her way as the morning light reflected off her platinum hair as if it was a mirror image of the morning light. She wasn’t aware of it, but she was a very appreciated sight by the crowd of men.

“Alright boys. Its time. For those of you who are new. You will be put in groups of five. You will then race down the docks and see who jumps the farthest into the freezing water. Remember the winner is chosen based upon how quickly you get to the end of the doc, how far you jump, and which of the three ladders you climb out on.” He said indicating to the three ladders. One was at the end of the dock where you jumped, the other was about ten feet back, and the last was at the base of the docks.

“Okay boys line up.”

And with that the crowd moved forward.

Into the Water

“Wish I could join you, but my ticker would stop the moment I found that cold water.”

A hearty chuckle left the Lotharros lips. A smile was offered with a nod before he spoke again. "Aye, that would be an unfortunate event. Though now you can live through the others here. It shall be a fun competition." With that he joined the others in line. Taller than most, he looked up and down the line. As he stripped down he looked between the other men in line. Many looked like they had done this before, he knew it was sort of a tradition but he wasn't sure on how far it went.

Each man seemed skilled in their own right. Some lined with lean muscle and a small frame, others matched him with mass and size combined. His heart thumbed in his chest as he began to really focus on the competition. The thrill alone keeping his nearly nude body warm as he did a small amount of stretching. Reaching with one leg at a time as he lowered himself. Focusing on the muscles in his legs to help him propel in the water. His eyes moving over the rest of the crowd. Women and children had gathered around, some holding blankets and some just there to watch. It must have been a sight for the women of the town, getting to eye the men in little more then small cloth without being judged. He noted that some of the people in line seemed to be waving to others in the crowd.

As he listened to the rules, his eyes bouncing between the ladders as they were pointed out. He focused on the last two ladders, they were farther from the jumping point and would require more inner strength to push to. His confidence began to burn, he was sure that he could make it to the second ladder if not the last. He had spent much of his young life training. Building upon his muscle with skill and endurance to back it up. He had to be more than a one trick pony. Relying on strength alone would get you killed. While he wasn't a runner or a swimmer, he could hold his own.

This challenge would be more then just trying to win for the fun of it. It would be a way for him to start spreading his name in the city. A chance for his legend to begin. If nothing else it was a moment for him to be recognized even if it was just for a few trials. It was what he wanted, to be recognized for his own skill and glory. It was why he had traveled with his brother to begin with. The city was his chance to escape the shadows of his family and become his own man.

Gennadiya remained perfectly poised as the men separated into groups. The groups were mostly divided up into men of similar size and build. She did noticed that the man who had talked with them earlier was in the group right after last arc’s champion. The men around him were not as tall as him but were all built a couple ever broader then him. Gennadiya recognized one of them from the recent repaving of the road by the clinic. Gennadiya raised an eyebrow as she received a wink from the man. She tactfully turned her attention back to man she had just meet.

He appeared excited, really genuinely excited. There was also something in his air that spoke of a seriousness. He was actually taking this seriously and planning on how to win. Many of the other men wanted to win but just trusted in luck to do so. The blue eyes sparkled for a moment with approval. She still though it silly but approved of someone who took the challenge serious.

“Madam Lyoshia.” Gennadiya suddenly hear her name called. She blinked not sure why someone had just called her name. She turned and looked at the master of ceremonies. “Can you honor us by calling the start for each group?”

Genna suddenly felt a hundred eyes on her. She kept her outward calm but felt a moment of panic. That many people looking at you was extremely uncomfortable. Breathing deeply she smiled at the crowd. “I would be honored.”

Soon she was calling each group to go. Most of the men hoped out at the first ladder and raced to a towel and the fire. Gennadiya handed out towels and called for the next group demonstrating her ability to multi task. A few went for the second ladder and these were clearly the more serious competitor. One person tried to go for the last ladder, but collapsed once trying to climb the ladder. Gennadiya moved to help, but her companion waved her back and moved to help the silly youth.

Last arcs winner was the only other person to use the last ladder, and while his jump wasn’t the farthest, he could swim like a fish.

Finally is was Korik’s turn. Gennadiya looked over all of them and nodded caught Korik’s eye and gave him a subtle but encouraging nod. “GO!” She shouted as the crowd cheered again.

The boards began to slightly bounced as the massive men moved down the docks. Gennadiya grabbed a pole to keep from moving at that first running step. She quietly watch and cheered.
