Devin Teaches People To Fight (Part 2)

Continued from here.

Ymiden 81, Arc 721

Afternoon

“But we already have swords!” a young human male with curly brown hair, a stableboy, if Devin remembered correctly, interjected just as the Mortalborn was about to show his newest students how to stand correctly. “We have a few of them. We just haven’t been trained to use them properly yet”, he explained, and the two cat Cadouri maids nodded emphatically.

Devin just stood there for a moment, because he had been ready (and perfectly willing!) to fork over a few dozen onyx nels in order to supply people with swords and didn't know what to do now. If he didn’t have to buy swords, then he could buy them other things though. Maybe, he’d get his people shields – or armor – or Echo Scrolls, because fast communication was important in case of danger as well!

He’d buy Echo Scrolls for the heads of staff and the Barons, and maybe a few spare ones on top of it, he decided, before he turned to focus on the matter at hand again – which was …

… standing!

“Alright”, he said and cracked a smile. “Since this issue is actually a non-issue, we’ll move on with the lesson. I already said that standing when you are fighting and standing when you are just standing are different things. So, without further ado, let’s put our feet approximately shoulder-width apart, bend our knees slightly and position our feet like that”, he continued in an enthusiastic tone of voice before he drew his very shiny swords because it was about time people got to see them, and settled into his stance.

To his surprise, the ten or so employees that had decided to participate in the first of what would hopefully become regular lessons, did not all try to follow his example. Instead, some of them eyed the practice swords on the table with some measure of confusion.

He eyed his students with a similarly confused expression on his face for a few moments before he realized that he was holding a sword while they hadn’t been given any – which might be one of the problems here. So, he slipped his very shiny swords back into their sheaths, and proclaimed, with a smile that was even wider than before and utterly charming, “I just wanted to show you what the whole thing looks like. I’d like you to practice your stance without a weapon first though so that you can focus on your footwork and on nothing but that”, he said.

“The proper footwork can make a difference in a fight”, he added because that was pretty important. There were understanding nods all around, and the various employees tried to imitate him, some with more and some with noticeably less success, although the stable boy that had spoken before did not do so without asking another question – which Devin was fine with, of course, because it was a great question.

“What kind of swords do you have, by the way?” he wanted to know.

“Two shortswords made of a Grave Gold and Geminite alloy. Grave Gold is resistant to rust!” he proudly proclaimed because that was a pretty important trait in his opinion. Rusty weapons were ugly, and besides, using a rusty weapon in a fight probably put you at a serious disadvantage. He preferred to always win though – and look good while doing so!

Since nobody had fallen over their own feet or been incapable of spreading their legs or bending their knees, although some people definitely bent them more than others, Devin continued with the next part of the lesson – holding a sword. He was quite excited about that since that meant that he would also get to hold his swords again. He loved them!

“Please grab a practice weapon each now”, he told them and gestured towards the table. “The cookies and the drinks are meant for after the lesson because you all deserve a reward in my opinion, but if you are really hungry or thirsty or just need a break, let me know. I can always get more stuff from the kitchen”, he continued and grinned.

“I think I’ll take one now”, he decided, grabbed a cookie and handed another one towards one of the cat Cadouri maids who eyed it rather longingly. She smiled all over her face!

“Anyway, does everyone have a sword now?” he wanted to know a few moments later, briefly wondering how exactly he should go about teaching the employees to fight with a sword, apart from asking them to imitate the various moves and correcting their mistakes.

He had taught plenty of classes at university, but there was a difference between medicine and magic on one hand and combat on the other hand. Was he supposed to give them homework as well, for example? He didn’t think that letting beginners practice combat moves on their own would be a good idea as it could lead to ugly injuries!

Maybe, he could ask them to practice their footwork for their homework though? How much should this lesson resemble a class at university? University could be pretty dull sometimes!

Maybe, he thought, it would be best to make this here quite unlike university so that it would be more fun!

“Right”, he continued in a chipper tone of voice once everybody had grabbed a sword and drew one of his own very shiny swords again, having decided to just save the matter of homework or no homework and all those other teaching-related questions for later.

“This is how you hold a sword”, he told the ten or so employees that looked at him and proceeded to hold up his sword so that they could all see what he was doing with his fingers, and where his fingers were, apart from on his hand. They were pretty nice fingers, with fancy grafted nails.

A few moments later, he realized that they probably couldn’t see what he was doing very well when he was standing a few metres away from them, so he proceeded to walk up to each one of them so that they could take a closer look at his hands and, perhaps, admire him a little.

“Don’t hold it too loosely, but not in a vice-like grip either. If you hold your sword too tightly, you sacrifice flexibility and such which is never a good thing”, he informed them.

“Why do you have two swords, but we only get one?” a different stableboy wanted to know and shifted the sword in his hand rather awkwardly before he quickly added, “Sir Baron, Sir!”

“Because you need to learn how to use one sword before you can use two swords!” Devin informed him in a bright tone of voice and smiled. “Sir Baron” was not the correct way to address a Baron – even though etiquette was not his forte he knew that much now – but he decided that he didn’t mind. On the contrary, “Sir Baron” sounded great!

“You are all doing really well”, he told them with a smile because you should give your students compliments in his opinion – and because it was true. None of them had dropped their swords yet, and most of them were even still in their stance - kind of at least.

That meant he could finally move on to the really exciting stuff – swinging your sword and blocking your opponent’s sword so that they couldn’t hit you and hurt you and do all kinds of unpleasant things to you!

“I’ll show you a few basic attack and parries now and …” Devin said in an enthusiastic tone of voice only in order to stop abruptly and look at the curly-haired man that had pointed out that they already had swords (real swords, not those wooden practice weapons) before. “If you hold your sword like this, it will be much better”, he informed him in a good-natured tone of voice and showed him what he was doing.

And then, it was finally time for the exciting stuff for real!

“This”, he began, swung his sword in a very wide arc and grinned. “Is not how you attack someone. Swinging your sword wildly may look great, but it rarely works properly, and moving it like I just did will take a long time and give your opponent the chance to stab you in the meantime. Being stabbed”, he told them in a serious tone of voice and made a face. “Is not a lot of fun so you should try to avoid it if you can.”

“You can do this instead, for example”,
he continued, made a step forward and pushed his sword forward, towards an invisible opponent, in a straight line before he gestured for them to try the same. “This attack is called a thrust – my roommate Aidan who used to be one of my teachers would probably insist on telling you the names of all of those moves. In my opinion, knowing the names of all those moves and all the fancy science behind swordsmanship doesn’t win a fight though. Fighting wins a fight”, he pointed out and grinned before he moved his sword diagonally, in some sort of slashing motion.

His students tried to imitate him, some with more, and some with noticeable less success.

“Or running”, he added in a slightly dry tone of voice once he was more or less satisfied with their performance. Of course, it would have been great if they had all turned into masterful swordsmen and swordswomen right away, but he knew that such wouldn’t be realistic. It was a start, and with regular practice, they would without a doubt improve.

And he’d improve as well. Eventually, he decided, he would become the best teacher ever, and the best swordsman ever, and the best ever at every other skill in the world of Idalos.

He would probably live forever because he was a Mortalborn, so he was sure that he could do it!

“Well, running doesn’t really win a fight, but it can save your life, and being alive is pretty great”, he amended once he was done thinking about how great he would be one trial, even though he was already pretty fantastic now, to be honest. “Which brings us to the last and perhaps most important part of this lesson. I offered to teach you to defend yourselves – so that’s what we’ll do now. All of you, raise your swords now, please”, he said before he did the same with a wide smile on his face because this was fun.

And what more, he was helping the Barony and improving its defensive capabilities while having fun!

“So”, Devin thus told them. “There are three simple ways to react to your opponent’s attack, apart from running, that I know of. You can either block their weapon like that”, he explained and moved his sword to show them what exactly he meant. “And push them back, with all the strength that you can muster up, or you can move your sword in a circular manner, catch the tip of their sword and deflect it”, he continued and showed them the next parry. “Or just try to step out of the way of their attack so that they hit nothing but air instead!” he finished, having decided not to demonstrate that particular move.

He wasn’t sure how he was supposed to pretend to avoid his opponent when there was no opponent!

So, he just told them to try the first two moves, and finally, he put his sword back into its sheath and walked over to the table with the refreshments with a spring in his step and grabbed a drink, gesturing for them to do the same. “Take as much as you want”, he told them brightly. “You’ve earned it. I’ll be holding another lesson in a couple of trials. I’d like this to become a regular occurrence. There’ll be an announcement in the entrance hall again, in case more people want to take part.”

“And oh!”
he continued because he had just remembered his teaching worries again. “If you’d like you can practice your footwork until next time – provided that you decide to take part again. There’ll be different food every time, because always serving cookies is boring in my opinion. How do sandwiches with bacon and melted cheese sound?” he asked, smiled and batted his eyelashes a bit before he proclaimed,

“Being able to defend yourself is important, but I’d also like you to enjoy yourselves!”

Re: Devin Teaches People To Fight (Part 2)

Once all the drinks had been drunk and all the cookies had been eaten, Devin returned to his room, put his very shiny swords away, took his glorious Blooded Leather armor off - and stopped dead in his tracks as something had just occurred to him. Was running really the way to go? Had he been teaching his students correctly? Maybe climbing up something high would be better than quickly running from your opponents!

With that thought in mind, he put both of his hands on his table and hoisted himself up. A moment later, he straightened himself, stood and looked down at the floor, a triumphant expression on his face because he had just had a most excellent idea (He had had a lot of those recently!).

There was something even better than running or parrying. If someone ever tried to kill him, and there'd be no other way, he’d just climb the highest thing in his vicinity so that his opponent wouldn’t even stand a chance of reaching him and hurting him, and then he’d throw stuff at them until they either ran away or had the good grace to die. He could fill his domain bag with lots of throwing knives and other sharp objects!

Still grinning, he moved to the edge of the table and jumped down again – and proceeded to sit down at his desk in order to make another poster that contained all the information on the next lesson – there would be regular sword fighting lessons from now on, as he had said to his students. Finally, he grabbed his wallet and marched into the entrance hall because he wanted to make a purchase before the trial was over.

So, before long, the four heads of staff as well as Devin’s fellow Barons, Darius and Nir’wei would find envelopes that contained an Echo Scroll each on their desk so that they would be able to communicate faster and more reliably in case of danger and other important situations. He would keep the corresponding scrolls until he had come up with a better solution, although this was already a pretty great solution, to be honest.

And of course, he had bought an extra set of Echo Scrolls, because more was, at least usually, better.

There’d be a lot of stuff for everybody!

Comments:

Devin can be flighty at times, but he is also a pretty good teacher. His students sure seem to be a whiny bunch, though. “Why can’t we have swords noooow? Why do you get *two* swords?” It’s a good thing for them Devin is such a chipper, friendly sort!

I liked how you describe the students and give them personalities and distinct concerns. I also enjoyed Devin’s approach to the basics: start with footwork, then proper grip, then stick to simple fighting techniques (thrusting, voiding rather than parrying attacks, run fu.) Finally, I like the fact that Devin has a sound motivation for wanting to teach this class in the first place, besides just: it's fantasy, therefore swords.

Hopefully the staff does their homework exercises and comes back eager to learn more things!

Enjoy your rewards!
