Oram Mednix  [Approved CS]

Oram Mednix

Name: Oram Mednix

Race: Human

Date of Birth: 45th trial of Zi’da, Arc 693. .

Marks: None (useful link here!)

Factions Joined: None

Languages Spoken: Fluent = Common. Fluent = Scalveen as of Zi'da 721 due to language loyalty bonus. Conversational = Rakahi from "Princess of Fection" book. Conversational = Common Sign from Bonus "Princess of Fection" book. (A Note about languages.)

Appearance

Oram stands 5'9" with a wiry build, weighing about 155 pounds. Lifelong exposure to the elements have weathered his fair skin to a ruddy tan. He has bowl-cut chestnut hair (he cuts it himself) and a close-cropped beard that is a lighter shade of reddish-brown. The beard makes his thin face seem somewhat less so. His hazel eyes are wide- and deep-set on either side of an aquiline nose.

His manner is noncommittal and his carriage unassuming. Oram is likely to get overlooked in groups where his attire and mannerisms do not otherwise stick out. In public he often walks with a shuffling gait that contrasts with the assured and relaxed way he moves and carries himself in the countryside.

Personality

Oram is, by temperament if not by circumstance, more of a woodsman than a traveler. He enjoys hunting in the wilds for furs more than he does haggling over them in town. He is ambivalent about the disreputable “gypsy” reputation his people have (conveniently ignoring that the same reputation also attaches to his own “poaching”). Nonetheless, he finds the prospect of living completely in the wilderness daunting, and grudgingly concedes the advantage of staying close to, and in touch with, civilization.

Oram lives mostly in the present and does not think overmuch about politics, religion, philosophy, nor even the future. He likes to think, speak, and act in simple, straightforward terms, and doesn’t like “fussy” discussions about complex social or moral topics. He also dislikes haggling or overly involved business dealings, and does not admire those who get wealthy off of dishonest or even “sharp” trading practices. He fancies such simplicity to be a virtue, a mark of honesty and quality, and distrusts most types of sophistication as insincere affectation. He sometimes suggests, only half-jokingly, that his two pack goats are better company and trustier companions than most people, including the other travelers of his troupe.

Weary of his strained relationship with his remaining family, Oram aspires to make enough money from trapping to strike out on his own and perhaps start his own family. But he’ll need to sell a lot of marten furs to make that happen. He also is socially awkward, especially with women, making courtship as much a someday conversation for him as wealth.

Things Oram likes

The forests of Scalvoris on a cool crisp day and the thrill of making a good catch. The prospect of independence and being completely on his own. People who aren’t loud. The smell of a campfire with the right sort of wood; he will sometimes take extra time to find firewood that has a good smell that he can enjoy while it burns.

Things Oram dislikes

His sister-in-law. Loud people or noises in general. Taking needlessly dangerous risks just to be macho. Topics and conversations that are needlessly "fussy" (i.e., complicated).

History

Oram comes from a family of travelers, currently living in a camp without about eight other traveling families just outside the city of Scalvoris. His father served as the lead hunter of the camp, providing both food and pelts for trade. He has an older brother who mainly works as a tinker and farrier around town. The brother is married to a high-spirited townswoman with whom Oram doesn’t get along; he finds her loud and bossy, while she finds him dull and uncouth. Oram himself followed more closely in his father’s footsteps, learning to hunt, fish, and trap. Perhaps because of this, it was to Oram that his father gave a prized crescent hare ushanka before he departed for his last, fatal outing (see below).

Oram’s mother died when he was still quite young, giving birth to a younger sister who also did not survive. Some time later, seeking to boost both his status and his wealth, Oram’s father took to hunting bumble bear around the Golden Cliffs for bounties and pelts, and was one day mauled to death by his quarry. Largely as a result of this experience, Oram himself has no use for the machismo associated with hunting big game with weapons. Instead, he focuses on trapping quarry such as fox, rabbit, and marten, which brings in good money with considerably less peril. At his father’s insistence, though, he did learn to hunt and fight with spear as well.

After dad’s death, Oram’s relationship with his sister-in-law deteriorated almost to the point of being intolerable, and as a result the two siblings are no longer as close as either would like. Wishing to minimize the time spent around his now-fraught family dynamic, Oram sometimes stays out on his hunting trips for days on end, especially if the hunting and weather are favorable.

Weary of his strained relationship with his remaining family, Oram aspires to make enough money from trapping to strike out on his own and perhaps start his own family. But he’ll need to sell a lot of marten furs to make that happen.

Hunting Capstones
  1. Capstone 1 Telegraphed Behavior
A life of hunting has taught Oram much about how animals behave. He's seen all the tricks. As a result, whenever Oram confronts an animal in the wild, he can, as long as he can see it, interpret its body language and behavior accurately, and anticipate both the rough timing and general nature of its next move. This makes it much easier for him to fight aggressive animals or catch skittish quarry. He can anticipate general behavior (i.e., the critter is about to lunge/bolt/etc.) but not exact details such as specific attack moves or directions of flight.
  2. Capstone 2 Lookuphere! Lookuphere!
Oram has heard many an animal call, and can readily identify most of the ones he's heard. He has also recently tried his hand at imitating those calls. Using this Capstone, Oram can imitate with Grand Master Proficiency any animal call he has specifically learned as a Hunting skill knowledge (Example: Hunting: Animal Calls: A pheasant's mating call). Oram starts this capstone with the knowledge of a (bovine) calf's distress call.

    Additional learned calls:
    1. The snarling cry of an angry, hurt pantheon. The Long Moo
    2. The angry roar of a brown bear. Hover Bear- Part I

Miscellaneous abilities awarded from here
Fairy Friend: Oram has shown himself the friend of the fairy folk. Should he be on Scalvoris, he can call on them and they will help him.
Fairy Form: Once a season, Oram can transform into his fairy form. His equipment shrinks with him, etc. He can remain that way from sun up to sun down. (which makes it tricky in Saun, just saying)
Daia's favour: The Immortal of Prosperity is impressed with Oram's part in this. You have 1 favour from her, should you call on her.

Miscellaneous abilities awarded here

Xiur's Hope
Xiur also approaches Oram and tells him that, in the Sweetwine Tree and here he was more than impressed with Oram's determined nature. He blesses Oram's Bow and gives it the permanent enchantment of Shooting Star: His crossbow is blessed to emit a ray of star light in a path that displays the trajectory of the arrow nocked upon it. This does not affect the shooter's ability to maintain this aim, and if the light moves from the target upon release of the arrow, the shot will still miss the mark.

Domain: Sacrifice (granted here)

Domain ability "Money Is No Object"
By performing a simple ritual involving a raised level surface (a flat rock or plank will do) and a drop of his blood, Oram can sacrifice some of his wealth to summon an item he needs, as if he were buying it from the Shoppe. The item summoned can be anything up to Tier 8, with any availability other than Very Rare.

The item lasts for one trial, at the end of which it crumbles into worthless dust. For durable items small enough for Oram to reasonably carry, the cost is 1/2 WP (rounding up) per tier of item. Larger objects, such as mounts or boats, cost 1 WP per tier. Larger items cannot significantly disrupt nor displace existing structures, geography, or infrastructure. This precludes the summoning of houses or other "permanent" structures. Consumables, such as food or medicines, cost their normal shoppe price, +1 WP.

Each successive trial, Oram may "renew the lease" on a summoned item, so to speak, by performing additional rituals and expending more WP before the item disappears. He can perform the ritual once per trial.

Because using this power requires a ritual, albeit a simple one with rudimentary requirements, Oram cannot use it in situations that would not allow the rite's performance; thus, he could not summon a boat while swimming, nor a weapon in the middle of combat, nor wings while falling.

ETA: Although Oram may give a summoned object freely, should he try to sell or trade it for anything of value, it will turn to dust instantly.

Custom Abilities (like those of Sombran mark) granted by Chamadarst from The Night Market!:

    From this thread
Vhalar's Favour: Oram finds, nestled among his maps, a small wooden disc carved with a leaf. It is a single-use item and may be used to call on the Immortal of Oaths - who will help Oram if he can.

    250 Renown Signagure Item:
    Eagle bone whistle of valor
This is a small, roughly finger-sized eagle-bone whistle with a fipple mouthpiece and a couple finger holes for varying pitch (although using them is optional for using the item's ability). Tier 7 quality.

Blowing the whistle has an effect similar to the "Hold the Line!" ability from the Favored Celarion mark. It dispels fear in those who can hear it and renders them immune to further fear-based effects for ten bits, and also enhances stamina for that time. It does not increase shield ability, but in compensation, the whistle affects animals as well as mortals, assuming these can hear the whistle's sound.

The effect resists fear from mundane sources, as well as Competent or lower Domain-based fear effects, and mark-based effects that are at Favored level, but not higher.

The whistle does not require any particular skill beyond the ability to blow it, although musical skill may make the instrument's tone less strident, as by default this is loud, piercing, and unpleasant (though not alarming, assuming its ability is being used). One does, however, need the ability to blow with full breath, and to close one's lips over the mouthpiece.

The ability can be used once per trial per competence level in Leadership (i.e., once at Novice, twice at Competent, thrice at Expert, etc.).

Magnifying glass made from rainbow glass. It is of good+ quality and will visualize sound waves coming from sources within the glass' field of view in beautiful colors. It will do this even if the source is not visible, revealing its location. obtained here

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Awards for Arc 721 Scalv hunt, awarded here

Duplicity Suit (This item is a two-piece suit It can change appearance twice per trial, but can never deviate from its original design (ie. a duplicity dress can only shift into other types/colours of dresses). The wearer only has to picture what they wish to be wearing in order to activate the item. When the item changes appearance, it can look like anything from rags to a ballgown and can be any colour(s) the wearer imagines. It will never be warmer or cooler and will not add any other advantages. If purchased as a two-piece suit, both pieces must be worn simultaneously to work. Damage to the fabric renders the item useless.) *

Stone Horse (A small stone statue of a horse. When activated, it becomes a life sized mount, perfectly suited to whoever activated it. The mount is tireless and completely obedient, requiring no sustenance. When it is time to sleep, the horse returns, once again, to a statue. May only be activated twice per trial.) Oram's stone horse is named Rocky.

Saoire's Medallion Medallions are enchanted with the favored ability "Gift of Cheer" from Saoire's mark, Telka. "Saoire's domain of Gifts is not merely one of physical goods, but of the happiness and joy that comes with both giving and receiving a well meant gift. This ability allows the Blessed to give both themselves and anyone they're with a feeling of joy and good cheer, banishing negative feelings like sorrow, anger, and fear. " This ability can be used twice a season for a break (hour) each time. Simply touch the medallion and think of the two words inscribed upon it to activate. Two words for Oram are "Courage" and "Focus".

    Awarded here

Snowsong! An ornamental doorstop-like figure. Made from what seems to be ice, it is the white blackbird which Oram saw. It can be placed at a perimeter or point where it acts as an alarm. When there is movement within a 40ft radius of it, Oram will hear an alarm. The alarm can only be heard by Oram and up to four other people he designates. He can remove access to hearing the alarm at any time, but can only give access twice a cycle.
Words! ~ A story book, entitled "The Princess of Fection" - it is the tale of a princess who traveled the world but ends up back home (in Fection.....). It tells of all the many different languages she has learned on her travels and the glorious food she ate and the many adventures she had. When you read this it imparts one language (your choice) to your pc. This language is at Conversational level and does not count towards your Linguistics maximum number of languages. You may assume that you have the base requirements for this language and may progress it as usual if you choose to.
This copy of the book focuses on the princess' interactions with the sailors on the ships that take her on many of her voyages, and how she makes a point of learning their languages and customs while on board. This imparts Oram with a conversational proficiency in Rakahi.
Bonus! ~ for getting Infection in the title, too, you get 2 copies of the book. In the second one, however, the Princess dies of infection and the kingdom mourns her. When you read this it imparts one language (your choice) to your pc. This language is at Conversational level and does not count towards your Linguistics maximum number of languages. You may assume that you have the base requirements for this language and may progress it as usual if you choose to.
This copy of the book describes in detail the dealings of the monks who administer the princess' funeral rites. The monks are sworn to silence and use sign language to carry out their duties when silence is in effect. This imparts Oram with a conversational proficiency in Common Sign.
Urges! ~ A beautiful and very delicate-looking decanter which, once a trial, will create pure, clear water. The decanter is actually very tough and will hold up to four servings. Those who drink this water will have any negative effects from tiredness, tension etc, washed away with the drink. It leaves you feeling refreshed and clear-headed. It does not, however, heal wounds etc and will not combat magical effects.
Malapropism! ~ The Very Pineapple of Usefulness. A small cut-glass pineapple which would fit in the palm of your hand. When placed on the ground it functions as a campfire in terms of warmth and providing a place to cook.
Vowels! + Hidden Objective: Titles ARE Included! ~
A piece of parchment. Four times a season, you may activate this and it folds itself into a small origami bird. You speak to the bird and give it a message - it "records" that message and then flies off to find the person the message is for. The message may be no longer than 50 words (contractions count for the correct number of words) and the bird will take the required amount of time to fly to the recipient. Upon arriving, the bird speaks your message (in your voice) and then flies back. If the recipient is dead or hidden by magical / immortal means - the bird will circle overhead when you summon it and not fly in any direction.
Fears! ~ A small grape. Eating it will heal you of minor injuries. This is cuts and bruises, scrapes and grazes etc.
Star Trekking!! ~ A single crystal star, glowing with hope. Once the ability is used, the crystal star always glows and makes a beautiful nightlight. (has been used)

Acorn Helmet (Signature Item for 500 Renown) This is a Tier 8 open-faced bascinet helmet that is fashioned to resemble an acorn, suitably cut away and hollowed out to accommodate the wearer’s head. It has the following abilities/properties.
    1) Autumn Armor. Oram can use this item to summon an armor that resembles a scaley covering of autumn leaves, as in the Autumn Armor ability from the Valeus mark. This armor has an aventail, leggings, and full-length sleeves ending in mitons; the only parts of Oram’s body not protected are his upper face, fingers, and feet. Unlike the standard ability, Oram can not summon and dismiss this armor at will, but only three times for up to one break each. The armor provided by this ability is Tier 6 scale mail in composition, and of Masterwork quality for reference.
    2) If Oram uses this ability outdoors between 1 Vhalar and 43 Zi’da, the armor blends in so well with the surroundings that it effectively increases his Stealth skill by one proficiency level while activated.

    Awarded from Saoire's Heroes
Mednix's Book of Useful Things: Once a day, Oram may flick through the book and choose one of the pages- then he reaches in and takes whatever the item there is. The items portrayed are useful, non-magical things which could be helpful in an emergency. One page may have a toolbox, for example, another might have a tent, or yet another might be a medical kit. It's not earth-shattering, but it's incredibly useful.
Crystal turtles ~ Each crystal turtle allows you to have a home. Twice a cycle it will transform into a turtle-shell shelter. Up to four adults can comfortable shelter in the Shellter. No matter what the weather is, the Shellter is warm and comfortable and dry. (Given away in Ymiden 723)
Health Pack! Two times a season, this small box will produce enough emergency rations for up to four people for one trial. This will appear in the form of nutrition bars and clean water. The rations can be split further but this will lower the effectiveness of the rations.
Saoire’s Sweets - A small box of your favorite chocolates / candies (10 total). You find yourself unable to eat more than 1 on any trial. But each one provides the following to whoever eats it for the next 6 hours: "Saoire's domain of Gifts is not merely one of physical goods, but of the happiness and joy that comes with both giving and receiving a well-meant gift. This ability allows the Blessed to give both themselves and anyone they're with a feeling of joy and good cheer, banishing negative feelings like sorrow, anger, and fear."
2 x memory vials. Since Oram did not drink his vial, he may take it with him and is given a spare.
Joy Scroll – For those that accepted a scroll from the Immortals, allowing them to connect with Vega/Arlo.
A crystal ornament representing a non-lethal mousetrap design. Oram did not notice at the time, but there is actually a tiny "mouse" inside, that runs up the glass tube, causing it to see-saw, if the ornament is heated with a small candle.

Awarded from Ruin's Dawn - Storied Gold
Arma Coin - A beautiful gold coin, intricately embossed. When Oram has this coin on him, he will find that he is never unarmed in an emergency. Oram can summon a single martial weapon to his hand if he or another is threatened. The weapon summoned is equal to good+ adamantite quality. Only one can exist at any time and if Oram drops the weapon, it immediately vanishes. The weapon will vanish when the need for it ceases.
Embersteel Water Flask - Will once a trial create pure, clear water, up to four servings. Those who drink this water will have any negative effects from tiredness, tension etc, washed away. Leaves one feeling refreshed and clear-headed. It does not heal wounds etc and will not combat magical effects.
The Wayfinder Map - A beautifully crafted, durable paper that, when activated to a location, can show the Oram a detailed map of who and what lies within. Shows miniature versions of people moving around, and location layout. Can be only be linked to one specific location at a time but will remain linked until Oram breaks the link. Location can be changed, if desired, up to 3x per season.
Coins of Opportunity - Oram picked up a small handful of gold coins during the journey. Can be used for plot hooks in the future OR you may redeem them for +5wp.
Calor Speculas - Practical, heavy duty protective glasses that allow Oram to detect the heat signatures. Used for locating people, animals - anything that realistically projects a heat signature. Lasts until deactivated but will cause headaches with prolonged use.
Tool Chest - Smelling like cedar harvested in Vhalar, this medium sized chest is enchanted to allow Oram to summon one basic, common tool he needs. Once a tool is requested, it remains until placed back in the chest. Oram must wait a full 24 breaks before requesting a new tool.
Awarded from Ruin's Dawn - Ascension

Wolf's Howl: A wolf shaped whistle that, when blown, lets out an ethereal wolf call. Can be blown once per cycle, and only when the user truly needs help. However, when they blow it, the help they need will come.
Gifted Bracelets: A pair of Bracelets that have the same powers as the Companionship Bracelet power of Daianya.
Demon's Claw: A remnant of Syroa that Cassion gave to you. It allows take on the demon bear form she used to fight Cassion once a trial, for no more than a break.
Ascension's Fall: A ring made from a fragment of the Ascension, imbued by Raskalarn with a limited effect: the ring drains Immortal Ether, impairing their ability to use their Domains, though it doesn't affect physical ability, knowledge, or skill.

    Acquired from the Night Market:

    Masterwork Spyglass.
Chamadarst’s Two-sided Nel: One-time charge that allows you to bring your character safely back to life after they’ve been killed or died unexpectedly. They will be brought back to moments before the fatal blow/action/event occurred, in perfect health. This doesn’t mean they won’t still be in danger though, and those who return are well advised to lay low until the danger has passed.

On the other side of the coin, another one-time use charge that allows you to perform the Sombran Mark power, equivalent to Ostracism:

    750 Renown Signature Item:

    Blood Brush

This is a normal looking paint brush with dark, matte bristles and a bone handle painted in alternating blue and red bands.

When Oram applies the brush to a large surface (such as a wall) with the intention of activating its powers, the Blood Brush will mark that surface with streaks of blood. A doorway
drawn in blood from the brush may be used two different ways:

    1) The former ability may be used three times a cycle. This opens a portal to the Fane of Five Faces. This portal will remain open for as long as Oram is
in Emea, and will only close when he returns to Idalos.
    2) The latter ability may be used once a cycle. This opens a portal to any place Oram remembers visiting, similar to the Memory Gateway ability from the Telka mark. This portal, unlike the
former, will remain open for a maximum of one trial, after which Oram will need to make other arrangements to get home.

For both abilities, passing back through the portal will return Oram to the exact location where he drew the doorway, whereupon the portal will immediately vanish (no backsies!)

The brush will produce as much blood as is needed for as large a portal as Oram likes, up to the size of a barn door. However, only living beings that are currently in physical contact with
the brush may pass through the portals it creates. In spite of the amount of blood it produces, the brush’s bristles will always be clean and dry after use. Awarded here

    Further PB binge-shopping:

    Domain Bag
    Night Glow Gem
    Portal Shoes

    acquired IC here

Oram's House Unofficial title: "Gandersauce Gables"; official Housing Office title: "Splintered Hatchet Logging Camp #4 Re-allotment Project, Lots 16 & 17, w/Camp Administration Buildings (Remodeled)". Gandersauce Gables is better.
Image
Oram lives in a Tier 7 house (Tier 6 living space floor plan w/good quality furnishings + large stable) built into a hill on four acres of land that was formerly the site of a Splintered Hatchet logging camp office just outside of Darbyton (about three miles distant on the west side of the Whisker River). Approved here.
