[Skill] - Unarmed Combat: Nomos

Name: Unarmed Combat: Nomos

Image

A highly defensive martial art focused on evasive maneuvers that wear down opponents. Practitioners with a defiance spark often manipulate the air around themselves in order to increase the fluidity and gracefulness of their movements by making themselves lighter. This allows them to maneuver around a fight with an incredibly light foot. However those without a spark are not without hope. Nomos utilizes a system of pushes and pulls similar to both Imber and Da' Riya however the physical contact made with the opponent is always far briefer. Nomos relies more on wearing down an opponent by forcing them the chase you and remaining just beyond their range to cause the opponent to overextend themselves.

Nomos is ineffective against ranged opponents without a Defiance spark. With a spark Nomos includes a wide range of circular motions that aid in dancing wind to deflect incoming projectiles.

This style incorporates smooth coiling and uncoiling motions with dynamic footwork when forced into close range. Practitioners of this art often seek to disable but not to harm their opponents by attacking their joints and other sensitive areas that they can identify. Some utilize swift grapple maneuvers to trap opponents limbs but in general the style does not rely on strength, it relies on speed and utilizing wind to exhaust your opponent.

Novice: 0-25
At this level of skill, one has only really begun to explore the martial art form. In the case of Nomos, that means an individual will know the appropriate forms and strikes but will always have a little trouble with the timing and execution of them. At this stage an individual is still too heavy footed to truly move around the battlefield like a Nomos master. They're slower, and as a result less effective in their attempts to evade and wear down opponents. At this stage they can not perform any of the coiled strikes correctly due to their heavy handed attempts. A Defiance mage practicing this art begins to develop a connection between the air and their body. It is the first step towards a greater connection to the air.

Competent: 26-75
By this point, an individual has become more adept in their use of the evasion techniques. They step lighter on their feet which allows them to bound from location to location with more ease and consequently, to avoid attacks with more ease. At this point the practitioner begins to see a relationship between the evasions and potential attacks and they have begun to practice coiled strikes. Despite this, their coiled strikes are often flawed in form making them less effective physically and making it harder to flow from a coiled strike back into evasion. In some cases for practitioners with poor balance, coiled strikes occasionally lead to the fighter falling or tripping. A Defiance mage at this level develops the ability to utilize air in active defense and as an extension of their coiled strikes (often in the form of an air blast). Additionally Defiance mages of this level begin learning to bend the wind around their bodies in order to make them lighter on their feet. This aids with their evasion skills.

Expert: 76-150
At this level, an individual has really come into their own as a practitioner of Nomos. They have learned to remain light on their feet to the extent that they virtually float around the battlefield, evading the attacks that come their way until their opponents tire enough for a counter strike to land. Practitioners will still occasionally encounter difficulty in new terrains that they are not familiar with and will occasionally struggle to utilize their knowledge depending on the amount of space they have around them but for the most part they are successful in their endeavors. At this level, Defiance mages (of adequate skill) learn to channel other elements through this martial art form. This form lacks most conventional offensive capabilities and as a result the Refinement options do not really apply however an expert in Nomos may learn to use water, fire, or earth to aid their evasions and coiled strikes similarly to how the air does. Alternatively they may choose to focus on their relationship with air and gain a sort of sixth sense. Some practitioners opt to shave their head at this level because they believe it helps them feel changes in the wind to alert them to attack.

Master: 151-250
A practitioner of this level has developed an understanding of the wind that only a master Defier could and as a result it has made them more agile and evasive in combat. They have perfected their disarming techniques and close quarters disabling strikes. They find themselves at home in combat on any terrain because the wind is ever present, it adapts and so does the master. In combat a master of Nomos is nigh untouchable and yet they seem to be touched all the time. It is that master slowly causing their opponent to overextend, to exhaust, and to expose a weakness.
