trip to the forge (Graded)

The cities and villages of Melrath are as varied and diverse as they come. The capital of Raelia is the the jewel of this western kingdom, playing host to a merchants, artisans, Aesir priests, as well as a cut throat political landscape dominated by the nobles of Raelia. To the south in the depths of the Myrkvior Forest lies Melrath's second largest, and oldest city, Fensalir. Here people have learned to live alongside spirits and the natural world by maintaining their loyalty to traditions laid down the first Melrathi. To the east lies the small fishing village of Noatun, and to the western mountains rests the Mer city of Verimeer, the brewing town of Alivilda and the alpine village Vormund.

trip to the forge (Graded)

Thu Jul 18, 2019 2:48 pm

66 Ymiden 719

Abra crumpled a piece of paper in his pocket as he ascended a long flight of stairs. It had been over a year since he had joined the Skadiri and only now had he decided to get his starting equipment. They told him he could ask for any piece of equipment that he wanted. Not many things came to mind when he thought about what gear to buy. He was not your typical Skadiri type. He was noisy, sociable, and totally unfit to be an assassin and too green to be a spy. He was too weak to go anywhere in metal armor and he already had a good set of leather armor. After being nagged to the depths of hell and back he finally came here to put in an order for the equipment just to get it out of the way.

He was here for the forge and the information on the paper was a vague list of directions that relied on landmarks and colors. It was sufficient to arrive here. He stifled a yawn as he walked up to a woman who looked like she worked here and told her.

“Ullo, I joined the armed forces and was told I am entitled to order some equipment to be made.”

He handed over a much better protected piece of paper with all the fancy words that could be dumbed down to say that Abra was entitled to two sets of equipment.

“I’ll take two sets of daggers built for throwing. Please make them as plain as possible with no markings. The more similar they are to one another, the easier it will be for me to throw."

Time of Day/Night: 66th of Ymiden 719
Weapons: Graphite or pen.
Armor: Washday outfit and a smith's apron + goggles
Injuries: Recently amputated left forearm.
Illness: Depression
Ether Reserves: Full

Alora was still dealing with the loss of her left forearm, a recent injury suffered during that ambush while the Etherstorm raged over the region. Her mood was vaguely depressive, and she was having trouble launching herself out of the funk. Forge work had done a good deal to get her moving again, and feeling like she could be of use. Granted, it wasn't her main hand that had been lost, but the diminished mechanical functioning was hard not to notice. She required other apprentices to lend a hand while shaping metal with a hammer, and sweeping the forge floor was difficult with just one hand, although she still managed.

She looked up from her business at the desk, where she was marking off equipment allotments for various members of the armed forces. All it required was a check and little else, so Alora found this a simple albeit mentally taxing job. Give her the trouble of battle any day, even with one hand, and she'd take it along with the risk.

The recruit was a skadiri, from the look of things. She tasted the air as he spoke, using her ether corruption to sample the flavor of this young one. It was simply a habit she'd developed, both to keep hunger and thirst at bay, but also born of curiosity for the types of people coming into the forge.

"Two sets of throwing daggers. Yes. What material?" Alora waited a moment or two for him to respond, before saying, "You can have iron, cobalt, or steel. I'd suggest steel. Cobalt doesn't corrode like iron and steel, but steel holds an edge better than both, and is sturdy enough if you take care of your equipment."

She sighed as she marked down the order, and then transferred it to the back of the forge.

"We do have some throwing daggers already in stock, but could make them to your specifications if you like, from new? If so, the wait will be a while."

She would have further questions for the young recruit, depending on his answer.

Abra had spent his childhood in a poorer area so the smells were never that pleasant. The smell of the forge was unique and pungent to Abra’s nostrils which made his nose curl up as Alora started talking to him. He must have been too distracted by the smell to have noticed before, but the girl in front of him was missing an arm. A look of shock passed over his face and he averted his eyes from the deformity.

“Steel it is then.” He was never one to argue with the likes of a professional. He took his right hand and placed a few fingertips on his chin as he thought about Alora’s proposition. He could get this task done and over with by taking some premade daggers. It’d be a net win for society if they didn’t have to waste more of their tax nel on making weapons in excess.

“On second thought, let’s pick out some that are already made. I’ll need a hand with choosing some that are similar to each other.”

He wanted to slap himself for mentioning the word “hand” but he couldn’t help himself. He reddened and chose to look right into Alora’s eyes with a look of regret. He definitely didn’t want to start some beef with a forge worker what with their ability to smash metal into shape. It didn’t bode well for the state of his skull if he got on one’s bad side.

“Poor choice of words maybe? Anyways, let’s get this over with. This place smells awful.”

The Ragnari were gathering all sorts to their ranks these days, from freebooters to rogue magi, to cannibals. So Alora didn't so much as raise an eyebrow at the would-be soldier's casual approach to addressing another Ragnari. The field would sort him out, if basic training didn't. It wasn't for Alora to correct his manners, nor did she care to. She just wanted to get the transactions of the day out of the way, so she could return to physical acclimation practice.

Alora nodded at him with a neutral expression as she led him over toward their stock of throwing knives. The knives lacked handles, as throwing knives tended to, but had rings to hook onto catches on one's baldric or belt. They were blackened with soot, intentionally in order to reduce their visibility to unfriendly eyes. A useful trait to one who might find themselves on a covert mission of one strip or another.

Setting aside her stick of graphite, on the desk of the counter. Then with her one hand, she picked up one of the throwing knives, in order to demonstrate the grip, or how she imagined throwing knives would be handled. Handling it by the tip of the blade, it could be thrown either overhand or underhand.

She gave it over to the recruit, to see how he liked that version of the steel throwing dagger. He'd find it light on the hand, and sharp if he tested its edge or point. If he didn't like the balance of that one, she'd let him handle as many as he liked until he found a model that suited him. They should have enough of whatever he preferred in stock.

"If you need practice throwing, there's a target out back. I'll get about nineteen more of these daggers sorted for you to take with you." There would of course be no charge, given he had a waiver for his choice of weaponry. Enlisting came with more benefits than sign on pay to attract all sorts to their organization.

Sparing a nod toward the recruit, she took the crate of throwing knives by the rope handle on the top, and placed it on the counter, sliding it over toward where she'd give it a proper count.

Leaning into the counter, the mage woman began taking record of the weight of weapon that the recruit had chosen, and multiplying it by the 20 or so he'd be taking. The knives were very light for ease of handling, but weighed enough to give them impact on the throw.

Once she tallied up the total weight of his order, she began counting out the nineteen other daggers for him. These she set aside, letting him gather them from the counter himself. She didn't feel he needed it explained that these throwing knives were for him.

Once that was done, she replaced the cover on the crate of throwing knives, and went over to the backroom of the forge in order to do some minor cleanup of iron dust.

However, if there was an issue, the recruit would be able to summon her once more. Hopefully he didn't need much guidance with the target practice.

Seemingly unphased by Abra’s comments, the lady on forge duty took him to the crate of throwing daggers and left him to his own devices to test them out. She was so formal with how she acted and Abra had a feeling that he was in the wrong here. He was a unique case among the skadiri. He did it as a hobby and an outlet to use ether more than anything else so he didn’t need to rely on it for money. He had a suspicion that they put up with his casual attitude because he was a mage that they intended to put to use when he became stronger.

Abra took the knives that had been put out for him and threw a few of them at the target. Alora would be able to hear the clanging sounds of the daggers missing completely and bouncing onto the floor. He’d save himself the embarrassment and gather up all the daggers and wrap them up in some cloth. He walked back out to where they’d first met had put the waiver for payment and prepared to leave.

“Thanks for your help. My name is Abra by the way. I hope we meet again because you were helpful for picking these things out,” he would call out to Alora, wherever she may be. He sensed she was a busy lady who wanted to be by herself. It was a shame because he would have liked to make a connection so he could delve into her mind with his empathy magic. Maybe next time he’d get his chance.

This was a short and straightforward thread. I laughed at Abra being concerned about wasting tax nel. Abra, you have a very quick and economic style yet get across some interesting information in few words. Alora definitely felt like she was getting a job done and it's a shame she didn't stick around to interact more with Abra.

The nature of this made the thread almost seem like a purely transaction thread as I didn't get the feeling of much connection set between either character and that they would just be moving on with their respective lives. Abra tried though at the end there with his introduction of himself. So... maybe next time.

Enjoy your rewards!
