[Scalvoris] Development and Requests Thread

Although their glory days are past, Scalvoris still boasts the largest number of pirate crews on Idalos. Although officially illegal there are just too many left over from the era of the pirate lords for the Elements to get rid of, and new crews will continue to form and grow in strength for as long as the surrounding oceans remain packed with trade vessels.

Should players wish to form their owns pirate crews, or make use of an NPC crew regularly in their threads (as allies, enemies and everything in between) they are welcome to use this thread to do so. Active crews are added to a roster that displays the important statistics and details about them, such as their reputation, crew size and flagship, so that all players can work with consistent and accurate information in their threads. It also provides player-run crews with a structure to use in order to grow their crew from a single ship to a powerful fleet, and acquire the necessary "crewmen" NPC's to sail them.
The Rules
Applications for new pirate crews, whether NPC owned or PC owned, should first be submitted in this thread using the provided templates.

Pirate crews are divided into five groups depending on the amount of ships in their fleet, with 1 ship being the smallest and 5 ships being the largest. These sizes offer various advantages and disadvantages compared to each other, and players are advised to remember that a bigger fleet isn't necessarily a better one. Quite a few of the pirate lords opted to stick with a single ship or a small fleet rather than try to handle a crew too big to work with their preferred styles of piracy, and were infinitely more successful than those who thoughtlessly expanded their crews without considering the consequences.
  • 1 ship crews have a smaller population and influence. They may lack the raw firepower to take on convoys of large ships, however this smaller size means that if they are skilled to capture wealthy targets there are less shares to split the money between. They also have an easier time going unnoticed both on land and sea. They are usually small enough to avoid the attention of the Elements unless they deliberately provoke them
  • 2 - 3 ship crews have a middling population and influence. They strike a balance between firepower and stealth, able to take on a heavily armed ship or a small fleet while able to avoid most hassle, but are now forced to move on from small, lone trading vessels in order to make enough money to split between a larger crew. At this point Element soldiers will make use of any opportunities to catch them that present themselves, and may begin small investigations in order to assess how much of a threat they may come to pose to Scalvoris.
  • 4 - 5 ship crews have a large population and influence. They now have the firepower and numbers to raid any class of ship, large convoys and even small towns and settlements, but at the cost of finding it difficult to go unnoticed. They must constantly devour the wealthiest merchant vessels (which almost always are accompanied by other well-armed ships to guard them) in order to provide enough wealth to sate their enormous crew, and woe betide the captain who cannot deliver what they promise to a small army of cutthroat they're stuck on a ship with. They must often pass on smaller vessels, for they simply aren't worth the chase. Additionally, being so large and well known means that the Elements will actively pursue and lay traps for them wherever they go, and may even send the fire corps to infiltrate and sabotage the crew before they get too large to handle. It is also more common for 4 - 5 ship crews to splinter into smaller crews due to the lower individual profits or disagreement among the captains of each vessel.
It is currently not possible for a crew to exceed 5 ships without special circumstances, as at this point they become a big enough threat for the Elements to effectively declare war on them. The full might of the Elements converges on them to either wipe them out or drive them out of Scalvoris; earth troops search the docks for their ships and burn them on sight, fire troops track them down and murder in the streets, and bounties are hung up around town that turn pretty much every citizen and other pirate crew into an enemy.
Employment Information

Joining a preexisting Mercenary Company
  • All members of a pirate crew are considered pirates, regardless of their individual duty. As such, they receive the Profession Cap of 50.
  • 1 Job Thread per season is required to receive wages.
  • Earning the role of leader of a pirate captain is the same as acquiring a business, and as such should be discussed with a Scalvoris moderator before it occurs, to ensure that the steps for acquiring the company is met.
Creating an NPC pirate crew
  • The pirate crew must be approved by a Scalvoris mod.
  • The template in the Templates Section must be filled out in its entirety in order.
  • By creating an NPC pirate crew using the template it becomes free for all players to use. That being said when using a pirate crew created by another person in their threads, players are asked to remember that their creator may have a purpose for them in mind and not cause events that would drastically change the crew without first consulting them.

Additional Requirements
  • All pirate crews owned by a PC must first be approved by a Scalvoris moderator, and then applied for in the Businesses Subforum where they must also be approved by one of those moderators.
  • A pirate crew can be created in character, or at character creation, assuming all the Tier 0 requirements are met.
  • To move from Tier 0 to Tier 1, the pirate crew must purchase a ship of sloop class or above.
  • "Crewmen" NPCs are defined as nameless, grunt type NPCs that can be acquired through various IC actions, often given to factions. These are often for menial purposes and are the lowest level members, the "red shirts" if you will. They have no skills to speak of, and do not level up through use.
  • Purchased/acquired NPCs are most commonly Personal NPCs acquired, or purchased from the Point Bank, and given to the Company. These NPCs are more prominent than the "filler" npcs, and can serve more important roles, as well as level up through use.
  • PC Employees: Must be working for another PC’s business. Get +2gn extra a day (paid by business owner) added onto regular wage. It is at the business owner’s discretion whether to pay PCs more than 2gn a day.
  • Simply owning a business gives you a +5.0 modifier to your current wage.
  • Each PC employee gives a +4.5 modifier
  • Each purchased/acquired NPC employee gives a +.5 modifier
  • Skill Modifier is Competent = +1.5 Expert = +3.0 Master = +4.5 Grandmaster= +6.0
  • Crewmen NPCs do not count toward NPC Employee Bonus nor toward Employee wage payouts. Only purchased/acquired NPCs and PCs count toward these.

Details:Lyam is an aging, somewhat androgynous, scholar, who keeps track of of the bloodlines in Darbyton. Their presence is part of every Naming Trial celebration in Darbyton as each mother brings her new child/ren to be formally named and recorded in the family bloodlines and geneology. As a sideline, Lyam also oversees the children's basic education once they are old enough.

Lyam is patient but firm with the children, meticulous in their recordkeeping, and beginning to suffer from arthritis in their hands which sometimes results in needed someone to scribe for them.

Details: One-Eyed Jack is a man of direct humor or a smack behind the ear if you don’t listen to what he's telling you. Usually a barked command. He has sharp gaze however and the one-eye moniker comes from the fact that he always seems to be looking at people with only one eye. His face turned enough just to see what he needs to see. Where he might sometimes lack in properly motivating others in words, he makes up in leading ships through the trickiest passages around Scalvoris. That earns him enough respect that even if sailors talk about him behind his back, they all know that without Frank, they’d be sometimes as good as dead so they generally listen. Because as he says: “I knows me stuff so you butt off or you gets me boot up yer arse."

He is happy to be underpaid as long as he can get on a ship and map the coast, the seabed, anything. Starry Eyes doesn’t talk much which sets him apart from the rest of his kin. You won’t see him much in taverns or socializing for that matter.

On the corner of the street just off of Gunvorton's Hope Street Marketplace, sits a picturesque building with cheery windows and an inviting doorstep. From the elevated place of the entryway, the hint of a large garden can be seen behind the structure. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a spacious and comfortable lounge. Couches and armchairs are scattered tastefully about the room, and on the wall hangs a board for company notices. Various doors lead to other parts of the building while a carved staircase winds up to the second level. On the ground floor, there is the office, records room, kitchen, dining, and washroom. The quiet upstairs hallway is lined with doors leading to the 6 bedrooms. Each of these rooms are equipped with basic furniture, though, more permanent residents are welcome to bring in their own pieces. On the third and final floor sits the last bedroom with a small stairwell leading up to it.

Out in the garden accessed from the back and side of the building, are well maintained flowering plants and trees. Garden paths amble through and along the shrubs lining the plot of land. When in bloom, the most notable feature of the place, and the building's namesake, is a large Wisteria tree snaking sideways along the walls of the house. Several stakes are set up to guide the plant, and large, lavender blue flowers cascade from the canopy.

Wisteria Hall serves as the main office and home for Rynata's trading business. Customers may send inquiries here, and employees can find a room to call their own should they need it.

Personality: She is out for herself and is not one to mince words. A woman who is both selfish and often manipulative enough to get her way. However, when it comes down to it, she is also a person with lingering morals.

A jewelry store often has no need to be large, but that’s no reason not to go all out. Vibrancy Jewels adopted the idea of “more is more” and houses a great variety of jewelry that suits any taste. At 2750sqft, the store is a large wooden store in Town Square with a wooden signboard which carries the name of the store in all capital letters. From the outside, people are able to see the brightly lit contents of the store through a large window. Upon entering, customers quickly find themselves buttered up by each employee that they interact with. Seductive compliments and tones are commonplace in the store so that customers are tempted to act on their impulsive emotions.

At the door awaits two well-dressed employees ready to assist customers with their every whim. Inside the store there are four well-lit display cases situated on tables and covered by spotless glass. At the back of the store either sits another two employees at a counter who handles money and manages the display case with the most valuable pre-made goods. Behind the counter can be a cabinet where money is stored securely. Along the wall adjacent to the counter, a large mirror sits for patrons to observe how the jewels suit them.

Comfortable furniture can also be found in ever changing locations based on where customers want to sit. In total there are four padded chairs, one armchair, and one couch. Vibrancy Jewels also offers a bathroom, should a customer need to use it. The workshop is an area inaccessible by customers. This area is nothing impressive, but only Hikaru and his four crafters may enter. It holds the tools necessary to cut gems, make jewelry from raw metals, and perform repairs.

While the shop holds a large inventory, the money maker for this shop is to provide custom made jewelry. Pre-made selections are mostly to serve as a demonstration as to the quality that one can expect.

Anything: Skye was approached by Hikaru after he saw how easily she made sales. Since then she’s tried to get money out of Hikaru on several occasions. He’ll never admit to how many times it’s worked.

Anything: Angee applied after being kicked out of her previous crafting job for sleeping on the job.

Minus usually wears a ponytail and revealing clothing. It’s rare to see anything covering her shoulders.
Personality: Minus was kidnapped for a year and the resulting paranoia defines her characteristics. She is always wary of others and carries a dagger on her at all times. Despite this, she is the most personable member of the crafting group. She enjoys talking to people and hearing about their problems.
Job Role: Jewelry Crafting
Anything: Minus didn’t do much in the ways of applying. She showed up and told Hikaru about her dark past and was hired more or less out of pity. She started out as a greeter but Hikaru moved her to crafting when she showed promise.

Reyku

Anything: Reyku got wind that a high-end jewelry store was opening and sprung at the chance to get into the business. He aims to become a businessman himself someday.

Raito

Anything: Raito is a failed actor who was looking for work. Hikaru was quick to hire someone with such charisma.

Scalvoris Mountain Goats

Price: 10GN for Nannies and 25GN for Billies.
Habitat: Mostly found in high land areas, especially surrounding the Scalvoris mountains. These creatures frequently live above the tree line during the warmer seasons and will migrate lower into the forested areas of the mountain sides during the winter for protection from the rigid and extreme temperatures that exist in higher ground through those seasons. They can predominantely be found in the forests during the end of Vhalar and throughout Zi'da and Cylus returning to the higher pasturing areas during Ashan and remaining there until the next cold cycle begins. They are herbivores and they can be frequently found around mineral deposits in the mountains collecting essential nutrients from these natural mineral licks.
Lifespan and Development: These creatures can live usualy between 12 and 15 arcs in the wild, however, domesticated goats can survive potentially all the way up to 20 arcs. When born the Kids (baby goats) will quickly begin to learn to run and climb within breaks and within a few trials they are fairly adept. Mothers can often be found walking behind the kids in order to make sure they don't fall and be unable to be stopped during particularly hard climbs. Goats will reach sexual maturity around 30 months and herd females will go into season and be ready to mate. Male goats will stare at female goats for prolonged periods of time when they are interested in taking them as mates and often they will fight other males in impressive displays to woo the female. After mating the male and females will once again split with billies moving away in small groups up to 5 and Nannies frequently making groups up to the size of 50.
Diet: Being herbivores these creatures will eat all edible plants found in their highland habitats having a natural understanding of what too and what not to eat, when domesticated these creatures will eat grains and fruits and grass as well.
Temperament: Generally dosile unless pregnant when they will defend their unborn young and shortly after birth too. Otherwise these goats will leave you alone unless attacked they tend to avoid human contact as long as you avoid getting too close. Domesticated goats act much like your usual sheep or goats and can be herded as such with usual methods.
Abilities: Incredible climbers and with amazing resistance to the cold and dangerous mountain environment these creatures are almost unrivaled in their ability to traverse the Scalvoris Mountain range, only second to birds who can avoid the terrain entirely. The Scalvoris Mountain Goat offers two items to those who farm them, although not many do due to the necessity of living in high up and isolated areas making their products worth a fair amount. The goats offer both wool and milk, while the wool is a brilliant insulator and can make amazing winter clothing it is not of as high value as the milk. Used to make a rather expensive cheese, this milk is highly valuable and much sort after by cheese makers across Scalvoris.

Habitat: These three foot long translucent constrictors can be found on and around beaches and rock pools from mid Ashan to early Zi'da. From Zi'da to early Ashan, they bury themselves deep in a sand dune or bank above the tideline to hibernate. They are uncommon in Scalvoris and rare elsewhere.
Lifespan and Development: Glass snakes usually mate shortly after they emerge from hibernation and give birth to broods of 3-7 live young in early Ymiden. The young are almost fully transparent and only a few inches long. By the time they reach their first hibernation, they have taken on adult colouration and reached a foot in length. Glass snakes reach maturity at 2 arcs and live 10-15 arcs.
Diet: Glass snakes hunt and eat shellfish of all kinds, beginning with shrimp and crayfish as newborns and increasing variety as they grow. A mature glass snake can easily wrap itself around a crab, crack the shell and drag out the creature inside with its long fangs.
Temperament: Glass snakes are shy, preferring stealth and hiding to outright attack. Most humanoids are bigger than any glass snake is interested in, but there are tales of Tunawa being mistaken for shellfish and barely escaping with their lives.
Abilities: Glass snakes are translucent, and all except the youngest have chameleon skins, allowing them to take on the colour of whatever sand they are lying on. They are prized as pets by trainee doctors and vetinarians because the snake's translucency allows them to directly observe the movement of bones and the action of living internal organs.

In such an environment as Almund, things frequently go missing; people too. And the circumstance surrounding such disappearances often bring hesitance to seek assistance from formal law enforcement personnel. So where is a citizen to go when they can not go to the guard?

Karel Hyde is your man. He runs this "odds and ends" shop, which does provide him a meager living. But the service this shop truly provides is as the front for the tracking down of these missing articles. Once commissioned, Hyde will either get them back, obtain their nel's worth as compensation, provide evidence of sufficient punishment administered to the offender, or a detailed explanation as to why he was unable to provide any or all of the previously mentioned results.

So how does one find 'Hyde and Seek'?

Even in far-off Viden there's a man who knows of 'Hyde and Seek'. While speaking to a woman who'd lost her husband, and had exhausted all the resources in Scalvoris Town thus far, the old gent asked her, "Did you try Almund miss?" Seeing her confused look, he availed himself of the complimentary pencils and paper provided by the great library in Viden and scratched out a crude map of Almund.

"Okay, this here's the waterfront," he began. "This here's where the docks end, and plain boardwalk and beach take over. Dont' take more'n ten steps and then look int' town. There's an alley goin' up that leads to shops you can only get to this way. There ain't no walkway down from above. When you run outta steps, you'll have gone one door too far on the left. The sign over the door you want will read 'Hyde and Seek".

Other Information: Surprisingly agile for his size and age, Karel Hyde is a burly man, two or three inches beyond six feet, with skin weathered by years at sea. He sports a topknot of dark hair, dull green eyes and a lantern jaw. He is not exactly intent on disguise but is not averse to altering his clothing to defeat counter surveillance. He amasses sufficient clothing at his shop to provide what he needs for this purpose, compounding the effect with hats or wigs to hide his singular topknot. A limp or stutter may also be acquired to further such deception.

Once revealed to his target, his gruff, uncompromising nature takes over. It is only natural that his strong belief in justice can make him appear brutal. But this is mostly due to the violent and belligerent nature of those he is forced to deal with, and coerce information from.

The same Videnese gentleman quoted above had this to say to the woman about him: "Karel Hyde is a hard man, but he'll treat you fair, 'specially with you bein' both a woman and carryin'. But if'n you can get Miss Effie, the bone reader, to come up with a good read on your search, he'll go outta his way to 'commodate'cha. He puts hard stock in her readin's, Hyde does. He's a finder. The shop is all odds and ends. In fact, it could be he'd have more hard-ta-find books, but I can't say fer sure. But his real nels is comin' from findin' things lost. Could be he can help you."

Price / Services Available

So much depends on the nature of what a player may ask of Hyde, that it is difficult to outline a graph to account for what he may charge. The items he sells in his store can be priced according to the site's price list. Conversely, what he might charge per trial to track an item down can vary greatly. He will estimate about 25% of what he thinks an item is worth, as an initial charge, then add two or three nel per trial, along with a running list of itemized expenses as he performs his work. He will not refund the 25%, but may choose to forego the additional charges if he feels there is just cause.

As for missing people, the more attention that has been brought to the case prior to his being hired, the more his initial charge will be, which will also be non-refundable. For a common citizen, one can expect a 50 nel charge, plus expenses, which will be itemized. For a city official, a charge of 1-200 is not uncommon, as the notoriety inevitably causes complications. For likely criminals, the danger is at the highest level, and so, therefore, is the charge, reaching upwards of 500 nel, with no promise of live return.

Claudia's Apothecary is located in the Residential District of Egilrun. It's a sizable building, with large glass windows so that the plants growing within can gain more sunlight. The front of the shop is three rooms for customers. The front room has the counter for purchases, and many shelves full of jars, bowls, sacks of various herbs, plants, and tinctures. She has a large supply and typically has most things a person might want. She keeps it comfortably lit and decorated.

In the room to the left, she keeps fresh growing plants, for anyone who wishes to buy one wholesale, or buy fresh clippings and the like. This room has many windows, and is typically kept fairly humid and warm due to many of the plants coming from Scaltoth Jungle.

In the room to the right, she keeps a small public library of sorts. There are couches and chairs for lounging, and many shelves of books. Roughly half of these books are works of fiction, the other half tend to be books on plants, herbs, poisons, and medicine. Anyone who purchases something from her shop, or orders some herbal tea from Claudia, is allowed to stay in this space and read. However, she runs a tight ship, anyone who causes trouble or damages anything, or disturbs other customers, receives a life time ban.

The back of Claudia's is off limits to customers as that is her workshop. She has multiple rooms for storing various plants, including one dedicated to her pride and joy, the Bluebird Bush. She's one of the only people in all of Scalvoris that is able to grow it successfully outside of the jungle, and she is very protective of this plant. Further back is her kitchen, which has a stairwell that leads up to the apartment she lives in. Behind her shop is a large, walled in garden filled with many plants native to Scalvoris.

Price List / Goods Available

Claudia provides a wide variety of herbs, plants, tinctures, and the like for all legal purposes. She will not anything outlawed by the Scalvoris government. She also provides some minor medical help for those in need, but her shop is not outfitted for anything major or life threatening.

People can also use the library to learn plant based or medicinal skills. They may also order herbal tea there.

Player Notes

The store part of this location is open to any and all to use. Claudia is a Personal NPC of Dorik. She may be used for any standard business transactions in this location without Dorik, or a moderator's permission. Anything beyond that will require permission from Dorik and/or a Scalvoris Moderator.
