The War of Slags Deep: Information, orders, ordinances.

What is known, who knows it.

The shallow bay Egilrun is situated upon is used, these trials, for crafts and crafting. From boatmakers to weaponsmiths, glassblowers to metalworkers, the sound of hammers and saws can be heard almost every break of the trial, with crews working in shifts to produce the beautiful craftsmanship which they might, one trial, become famous for.

The War of Slags Deep: Information, orders, ordinances.

Image
Slags Deep

The first phase of any war is to gather intelligence. Information. Knowledge. In order to have a plan, you have to know what you know - and what you don't. Therefore, after the council declared war on Slag's Deep last arc, they have been increasing their intelligence gathering. The following is the information which is known, and who by.
Information: Known By:

  • All Council Members.
Links to the SparrowIf he is the Sparrow, there are estimates of him bringing 200+ mages into Slags Deep. As a rough estimate, twice as many slaves, but there is no actual evidence.
  • Kura. Balthazar. Elisabeth.
These are all the things that are known. Alongside usual troops etc, you (the Council) have access to:
  • 20 highly skilled undercover troops
  • The University
  • The Order of the Adunih
  • Isonomia
  • The Intelligentsia
  • The Merchants Guild
  • Saoire
The followings are rumours / ideas which are given to Kura in the dossier of information. None of them are sure, though - they range from theories to wild speculation. Currently only Kura has access to this information.
  • The Warden is linked to all of the events which have happened / are linked in the exposition
  • There are a number of theories about his "daughter" - she's linked to the Faldrass Induk and the "Death Forged Rose" (Jacien has no idea what that is).
  • There is something imprisoned beneath Slags Deep - it is a monster older than Idalos
  • The Warden is a loyal servant of the Eternal Empire (purely from reports of his accent)
  • Slags Deep is a prison for a very old creature who is being held in.
  • The Warden has a penchant for pretty girls and whiskey - he's inclined to making deals and is a dreadful show-off.
  • He wishes to bring the Pirate Lords back - they were a "simpler time" - he may wall be linked to some factions who are aligned with that.
  • He has links in almost every town / village. There are very few places he doesn't - but he's not known to have links in the Jungle or the Sweetwine, also, Gunvorton is somewhere he keeps clear of.
  • There is a rumour that he has a network of tunnels under the island which he uses for intelligence gathering.
  • There is some link between the Warden and the late Baron von Smooglenuff.
  • Intelligence suggests that Faldrass and the Scalvoris Mountains are prime targets.

This thread is for Kura and Council Members to post and set priorities. I'd like you to tell me what you want to do - and who you want to do them. Assume you've got a maybe 30 day window of time to achieve all this.

Also - remember that you need to not only gather information, but plan your attack! Thanks!

Bao, as the new welfare council member, will be prioritizing relief. Food supplies, tents, medics etc. Anything that might be needed for people involved in the fighting. This involvement will be as hands-on as possible, from ensuring the food is good quality to making sure people are comfortable. As well as this, Bao will ask for help from anyone with skills that may prove helpful, such as woodcraft, fieldcraft, cooking and ANY other skills that might be of help to be involved where possible.

Donation boxes are also something Bao will suggest are put around, to help fund the relief and the people willing to help out.

Bao will also suggest, and do so himself, that prayers to Immortals are sent - especially by those that are marked. Bao will try and have involvement with Saoire if possible and ask for her aid.

Nir'wei, as Councillor of Natural Affairs, holds limited professional involvement in the war - however on a personal level, holds his priorities in security and the maintenance of such during the tenuous time. He offers his own services and those of his staff in assisting the Elements on a national and a local level, reinforcing order and protection of the villages that make up Scalvoris, making the case that making guard dogs and pets a more available resource would improve the security of households more than additional guard patrols, at little increased cost.

Nir'wei will also quietly suggest to Kura that at least one of the undercover troops is assigned to the Elements, though preferably four to cover each of the four divisions of Earth, Air, Fire and Water, to weed out any potential informants that the Warden might utilise. Nir'wei suggests this privately not out of lack of faith in the Militant, but as an independent source that reinforces objectivity, in the hopes of working closer with the Militant and the Elements later on and throughout the war.

Kura, as the Albarech, will concentrate on co-ordinating the various branches of government for the war effort as well as facilitating communication between the government, the people, and military. She will share the information on the Warden with the Council, incluing the restricted information and the links to Sparrow. In addition, she will agree with placing Spirit Elements within the main four Element Branches. She will, however, not be particularly sanguine about attempting to infiltrate Slags Deep, unless of course they already sent someone in prior to declaring war.

In regards to the rumors she's received, Kura will pay close attention to every rumor but his status as an Imperial Agent and share them with the council. If her status as an Imperial Agent comes up, she will point to her own Imperial background and explain that the kind of rampant destruction and chaos that the various attacks on the island have caused on the island are not their style, as well pointing out that both she and Brandel before her have maintained good relationships with the Empire.

In regards to things only she can do, Kura will ask the University and Intelligentsia to investigate the rumors, ask the Merchants Guild to examine any large bulk purchases of food and supplies to see if they could lead to Slags Deep, ask the Order and Isonomia to prepare for potentially heavy casualties and see if they can volunteer field medics or even set up field hospitals, and ask Saoire to give what help she is willing and comfortable to give, with a special priority given to helping those who lose their families to the war, should such tragedies happen.

Owing to new information and a need to get things underway, Kura will be doing the following over the lead-up to the 30th.

Kura will order the Elements to place Slags Deep under siege. Knowing that this war was coming, she will have had Rand working on a quiet mobilization over the last season so they don't have to start from scratch when war is declared. In addition, she will have the Menageries and the Elements set up messenger stations at regular intervals along the roads of Scalvoris, each manned with at least three Enormowl at all times so that messages can reach any point on the island in a hurry, including Faldrass, Ishallr, the Watch, and the Immortal's Tongue.

In addition, she will have members of the university, the temples, and other scholarly groups, investigating Elisabeth's visions to find out how they pertain to the current situation and what can be done with the information they contain. They will also be tasked with trying to salvage any history they can of the Smooglenuff barony and the barons themselves, because Kura is assuming they knew more about the Induks than anyone knows.

In addition, because this is Scalvoris and the universe hates the idea of simplicity on this island, Kura's going to have a joint team of scholars, Elements, and Menagerie messengers watching over the following locations to make sure that nothing goes wrong and that they can react quickly if something does happen: Ishallr, Faldrass, The Immortal's Tongue, that big tower in the middle of the island that nobody can enter, and Sweetwine Woods (in addition to the expidition already going in there).

Finally, Kura will also be meeting with Ralgar Warborn of the Scaltoth to see about enlisting their aid against Slags Deep and maybe finding out any oddness going on in their neck of the woods.

Ok, so. Lets have a look at this.
Mobilisation / siege: fine, done.
Messenger stations: fine, done. The Rangers will assist here.
Investigating the visions: that will be done, but there is more information to come about that when the thread in question finishes. Nudge me when it has.
The Barony: Yes. This is done - and they do it well. But Doran's research will give you more and, since he's got an Echo Scroll with you, I'm going to ask him to post a summary here
Watching Locations: Yes. Big storm on the 30th hits those exact locations (and others).
Scaltoth: That will give you more troops - but they're twitchy and weird and kinda like... well. Twitchy and weird.
Rangers also give you information - I'll ask Oram to provide a summary.

Re: The War of Slags Deep: Information, orders, ordinances.

An arrow-pointed list

ooc:

Rangers have recently established round-the-sundial observation on the road connecting Scalvoris to Egilrun, especially at the bridge west of Egilrun. They will periodically be patrolling this area. They also have an observation post noting traffic at the crossroads going to/from Slag’s Deep. They are looking for hostile patrols and attempts to interfere with peaceful traffic along those routes. They are specifically interested in identifying any shipments of glassware to Slag’s Deep. Finally, they will be looking for activity at fording sites that might be intended to circumvent the bridge.

Rangers are also reconnoitering the northern coast of the island between Scalvoris Town and Egilrun. Oram Mednix will be personally involved in this reconnaissance.

This intelligence gathering will commence on 24 Ashan. Intelligence gathered will be forwarded to the council as it is collected.

Oram has gathered that Slag’s Deep has recently changed its logistical patterns. Most significantly, it is no longer purchasing glasswares locally, but rather is importing large quantities of glasswares from Viden, while exporting its sand and/or partially processed glass to Viden. The Immortal Vhalar has communicated with Oram Mednix personally to report that the wares Slag’s Deep is importing are a specialty of one female artisan in Viden, who is unaware that she is producing the wares for the Warden. It is believed that the Warden has contrived somehow to conceal the identity of the end user from this individual, and that she would not continue to supply the glasswares if she knew who was actually buying them.

At this time, we are unable to determine what the glasswares actually are, or who the woman is who is making them. They may be important to the Warden’s schemes somehow, however, so attempts should be made to disrupt this supply chain, as well as to discover more the nature of these glasswares. The Rangers are currently working with the Egilrun port authorities to do this.

Vhalar suggested to Oram that one of Cierel’s offspring is behind much of what is going on in Slag’s Deep, and has largely duped the Warden into furthering its designs. Oram’s best guess is this refers to the Immortal Audrae. More research is required. Vhalar also suggested that Seals be refashioned to confine the power that is using the Warden’s daughter as a conduit. The Immortal had no information, however, as to what these seals were, nor how they were to be made or deployed.

Oram Mednix continues to pursue information on the “powers beneath” Scalvoris that may have a role to play in upcoming events.

Re: The War of Slags Deep: Information, orders, ordinances.

Doran's Research:

The Book of Prophecies

During his research in the Prime Atheneum in Viden, Doran found a book of prophecies that was written 200 arcs before the pirate lords arrived.

According to that book, Scalvoris is connected by a series of underground tunnels and the constantly moving caves in Ishallr are, in fact, not randomly moving at all, but are controlled by someone, and they provide access to the whole island.

There are statues which guard against people finding the way into the “Hart of Scalv”. It speaks of the Heart of Scalv overseeing the “five elements” which it refers to as Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit.

It also speaks of the “King of Egilrun” who seeks to take the Pirate Lord crown. It mentions isledots and shrines, and the need to Watch at all times, lest the dark ships come and bring death with them.

The book of prophecies was written by a Mrs. Violunne Guffone who seems to be linked to both Xiur and Ziell in some way.

The Tunnels

In Doran’s opinion, the tunnels that connect Scalvoris are something that could be used by both sides.

There was a three-trial expedition in 717 during which the ice caves were explored. The Eclipse Portals were discovered back then.

That expedition is something that should be looked into further in Doran’s opinion.

The Heart of Scalvoris

Further research of the Heart revealed that there are differing legends. Some say that it is located in the Scalvoris Mountains. Some say it binds the five elements, one of which is either “Spirit” or the “Heart”. Yet others speak of the “essence of Faldrass” that is the Heart of Scalvoris.

In a letter, Faith Augustin mentioned that Smooglenuff Manor was on the site of Fire. Ishallr is Water. The mountains are Air and Immortals Tongue is Earth - in many of the legends that she read.

Doran thinks that there may be another reason for all those legends surrounding the Heart differing apart from the obvious. Maybe the Heart is not located in a single place. There could either be more than one Heart – or the Heart could be moving from one place to another. The heart is usually the crucial part of something, the one thing without which the rest wouldn’t function, and it is usually not located on the surface, but somewhere deep down.

Furthermore, there are other legends that are associated with a heart – such as Treid’s heart.

Finally, Doran learned about the star which protects Scalv. That star is often described as though it is a person – and it has friends. They protect the Heart. Xiur is one of the protectors of Scalvoris.

Watch

In the book of prophecies, Watch was used like a verb, albeit capitalized. Watch is also a noun though, and a name. There are connections to Watch, the fortress that guards the entrance to Treid’s Mouth. The author of a book that Doran found believes that it’s the entrance to a series of underground caverns and tunnels beneath Scalv – the true home of the Pirate Lords. The Pirate Lords disappeared quite abruptly in 716.

In light of that new information, Doran cannot help but wonder if they didn’t just disappear, but returned to their true home.

Dark Ships

Dark ships have already been seen in Ymiden 718 when Smooglenuff Manor was attacked among other things which caused Doran to wonder if someone had already stopped keeping watch before.

He cannot help but wonder if Baron Smooglenuff had been protecting something or guarding something, that there might even be a link to the Heart or the other elements.

The King of Egilrun and the Pirate Lord Crown

The Prime Atheneum contained little information on the Pirate Lord crown. There is some mention of it being linked to the Pact though, and there may some information in Scalvoris.

The Warden

According to Xiur, the Warden is a Mortalborn of Qylios. He swore an Oath, bound in blood, to protect his daughter. He sought to keep her alive. He couldn’t bear to see her grow old and die while he still lived in his prime. He was deceived though. He was tricked into believing that he could make her life as long as his, but he did not know the price. Anything she was, is gone. Her soul has been consumed. Whatever wears her face now is not her. Bound by an Oath to protect her, the son of Qylios still loves her though.

Doran believes that the Warden was tricked by Audrae.

The Immortals

There are several Immortals involved in this, apart from Xiur: Qylios, Chrien, Audrae, Ziell, Cassion, U'frek and Vhalar, at least, and their opinions on how to handle this and whether the Warden should be destroyed or not differ. According to Xiur, love is not something to be ignored.

In a letter, Faith Augustin also mentioned a visit to Immortal's Tongue, signs of a "war" between Moseke and Lisirra and something serving to hold back Lisirra's influence.

Fei’s Grave

The grave of Xiur’s mother Fei lies beneath Scalvoris, a place that his sister’s fury ravaged and destroyed. Fei was someone who saw the world and marveled at it. She studied it.

Doran believes that Xiur’s sister Chrien might be angry because of her mother’s death and because people plan on waging a war on her mother’s grave.

Such is considered a sacrilege.

The Induks

What happened – to Fei? – acted like a stopper on a bottle or a bottleneck according to Xiur. If the creature who wears the daughter’s face is released it is possible that the cork would pop. According to Xiur, Scalvoris exists in a delicate balance. Its release would upend that balance, especially with the Induks still restrained, in part. There should be five Induks, but their power has been taken by the creature. When Faldrass was released, some of the Daughter’s power was stolen. Xiur wonders about what would happen if the other four – Earth, Air, Water and the Heart – were released. The Daughter gains power from the mages in Slag’s Deep, but that alone would not be enough to sustain her.

Doran’s Current and Future Research

After his meeting with Xiur on the 20th of Ashan, Doran will travel to Scalvoris to continue his research. He plans to talk to a professor at the Institute of Metaphysics, Professor Fridson, about Fei and the Originals in order to find out more about that connection. Said professor made a trip to Fei’s shrine on Immortals Tongue in 717, among other things.

He also plans on researching other “Heart” legends, such as Treid’s heart and the heart of Lovalus and will write Faith Augustin a letter and ask her for her advice - and try to take care of Kura's request.

Finally, Doran is researching a connection between Mrs. Violunne Guffone and Enri Von Smooglenuff. He is currently trying to figure out if the former is an angram of the latter. He is also trying to learn more about Enri Von Smooglenuff, his connections to the Immortals, the Smooglenuffs and past attacks on Faldrass.

There were a lot of attacks on Faldrass over the course of the centuries.

According to this moderated thread that is still in progress, the pirates appeared to be almost fanatical about trying to take Faldrass. They seemed to focus their attacks on the docks to the manor and the manor itself, but never really tried to invade through other parts of the island.
