APPEARANCE
Image
Gem can be described as his mother’s son. He inherited the beauty the Qi’ora woman had, with some added boon from his father. Most would say, though, that he looks more like his mother than anything else. He is above average height at five foot ten, though he is somewhat smaller than the lumbering Lotharro that call Uthaldria their home land. He is also not as muscular, lithe and slender. If one so chose, lifting him would be not a difficult task. Most times, other than when working, he is leaning on any nearby structure or person, though the person would have to be someone he knows. His complexion is clear, in some lights the color of clay. Soft, dark jewel undertones highlight his skin tone.

His face, without a doubt, is a lovely sight to behold. It’s rectangularly shaped, with soft edges that create the urge to touch. His features settle on him just fine, evenly spaced. His eyes are almond shaped, slightly hooded. His irises are often found to be a mahogany brown, sometimes a brown so light they could be grey. While his lashes are not long, they are many and neatly curled. His lips, arguably the most enticing feature, are lush and pink, almost like a peony. In his younger years, Gem was forced into amicable dress-up games that often left his lips smeared with an array of colors. Even then, there was a quaint fascination with his lips, which he has persisted in disregarding. Instead, he prefers to keep his attentions to a more manageable aspect of his appearance: his hair. Every few seasons or sometimes a full arc, he shaves his head and allows his hair to grow anew. Most are unsure of whether or not he does this simply because he does not wish to maintain it, or if it’s a tribute to his mother. Regardless, his hair is usually cut short and seemingly well groomed. When he does grow it out, it can be anywhere between a curly clipper cut to a thick pompadour. But, most times, it’s a close fade.

Gem’s voice has been noted as velvety and soothing. It does not go without notice that when speaking to certain people, his voice tends to deepen. This is usually in the presence of the Lotharro customers, and pretty much the majority of the populace of Uthaldria. His voice could be described as a tenor, though as mentioned before he can dip towards a baritone if he thinks it necessary. His words are generally clear unless intentional slurred or drunk--but neither are common, so it’s generally easy to understand him.

tattoos

Gem has a few tattoos that cover his forearms. One is floral and the other resembles a lion of some sort. Another covers the index finger of his right hand, a smaller version of the lion. There isn’t any marvelous story to tell about them, although they do appear blue on his skin for the most part.

PERSONALITY
Image
Seemingly a product of the environment he grew up in, Geminius has developed an emotional intelligence that’s quite something. He’s fairly adept at reading facial expressions and emotional cues, as well as navigating tense emotional situations. However, this only seems to apply to others, and not himself. He’s always been bad at properly dealing with his own emotions. In most cases, he merely ignores what he’s feeling or keeps it bottled up as a constant annoyance. His inability to deal with his own emotions can lead to some...not so favorable moments of vulnerability. And in a place like Uthaldria, vulnerability is not something Gem wishes to show often. To make up for this, Gem can be quite somewhat cunning. He’s developed evasive maneuvers for any situation that might put him in a tight spot, or draw attention to any present vulnerabilities. Of course, he isn’t the greatest at this. Maybe he could improve with a little bit of gambling; his father already remarks that he might be quite good at it.

By all reports, Gem can be overdramatic. He tends to exaggerate often, hyperbolizing small details. It can be problematic when he makes little problems bigger than they seem, especially coupled with that pesky inability to address his own emotional shortcomings. Rather than small hurdles to overcome, his problems begin to seem like treacherous mountains to climb. He could be better off not thinking about it, in his opinion. And with his overly dramatic nature comes big gestures, even while he speaks. His hands are like dancers that follow the beat of his words, accompanying whatever it is he has to say. It’s also not uncommon to see people ducking away from him because he forgets he’s holding a knife in one or both of his hands. According to a number of people, he tends to forget often.

Maybe it was because his mother shielded him, maybe it’s due to some selective obliviousness, but Geminius can somehow be described as innocent. He knows things, but then he doesn’t completely know them. Even with the occupational choice of his mother and the story behind his conception, he’s still innocent to the point where one would question whether his origins were truly in Uthaldria. To this, he has no response more adequate than to direct them to where had previously lived, which would be the House of the Rigid Rooster. It seems to shut people up well enough for him to walk away. But, his innocence is not seen as a hinderance, not really. Where others are more concerned with the carnal aspects of the city, Gem is free to do his work and be about as happy as someone hiding from their emotions can be.

If there is anything that gem fears most in life, it is being useless. Being unable to aid anyone for any reason leaves him feeling a little less complete. He can certainly be called a busy-body for this reason alone, and his intentions are not entirely altruistic. Everyone gets that warm, fuzzy feeling when they help people. Now imagine that magnified by ten; that’s the level Gem is on. Unfortunately, this also plays into his tumultuous emotional affairs ( those darn emotions! ), in that seeing others happy provides him with a sense of peace. For this reason alone, it’s often that he makes himself available to help others in any way he can. He will go so far as to inconvenience himself simply to help another. It can be detrimental to his physical and mental health when these actions fall through, and then it’s all up to chance from there.

HISTORY
Image Despite some rumors, Gem was born in Uthaldria. His mother, Myi, had been born in the city as well. Though, her life did not turn out the way her parents might have suggested. Rather than take up apprenticeship with an artisan, she took to the pleasure houses. She was a beauty to behold--something she passed on to her only child, thus far--and so decided that there would be no harm in utilizing this beauty. Pleasing others, in itself, was an art to her. And thus, she found herself in the House of the Rigid Rooster.

She was welcomed with open arms and eager teachers. There were no problems in the following arcs that presented themselves, and even if they did, Myi moved right through them. The only one she would never be able to do so with was Ad’nola. The Sev’ryn was insufferable, even if his original intentions were not what they became. He wanted a child without the attachment of marriage, and he chose Myi to be the donor. It wasn’t hard to see why anyone would choose her, really. It was mostly a wonder no one had thought to choose her beforehand. She had seen countless others be chosen for it, but never once had she truly thought she would join them. The idea of motherhood had been far from her imagination and she was determined to keep it that way.

But Ad’nola was persistent. He wanted Myi, and Myi alone. Not in any romantic sense, of course; he found her to be the most pleasing and thus assumed their child would be much the same. He didn’t care which gender they would be, so long as he could call himself a father. Attachments like a wife were trivial at best, and hindered his ability to grow and develop. At least, that was how Ad’nola started. What changed his mind was Gem’s arrival into the world.

Rather than want only the child, the Sev’ryn wanted the mother as well. He attempted to persuade her leave the city with him, take their child to Desnind. Myi refused, adamantly. It went on until Gem had reached an arc in age, the day he would be named by his father. A constant back and forth that often left both parties tired and rueful. Ad’nola disappeared for a full cycle before returned with renewed vigor after Geminius’ naming day. He had come up with a compromise that he felt would work out.

It was easy enough to explain. The man would have time with his son and mother of his child, but she would not need to leave work. It was the matter of funds and a timetable that were the real issue. By the time Geminius was five, his father had saved enough for weekly visits and outings to see he and his mother. Those first seasons were shaky and apprehensive, but eventually they feel into the routine. It was almost like they were really a family, a husband with his wife and child.

There were times, however, when it would be the boy and his father alone. It was there that they spent the day gorging on sweets and delicious foods. When it was done, he’d be returned to the Rigid Rooster and sent promptly to the kitchen, away from the workings of the pleasure house. It wasn’t for lack of trying that he’d stay in the lobby. He’d be swarmed by customers curious to guess as to whose child he was, only to be escorted away.

The kitchen, as it were, became like a second bedroom. If he was not with his mother or in their room, he would be there. If he was not with his father, he would be there. He’d be occupied by the cooks, talking to him ass he worked. When they were short on hands, he would step up to the plate and take action. It was where he first learned to cook. It complimented the sweet memories of the stolen bits his mother would take to simply hold him or check on him, the days he would walk hand in hand with his father in rare moments of idleness.

And, if he has his way, he’ll find a new kitchen to call his own.

Mark Story
The sizzle of bacon was his savior only for the moment, the boisterous crowd outside the kitchen leaking through each time the wooden doors swung open. He could pick out, only a few times, the voice of his mother. An airy laugh here and there, the pet name pumpkin drawled out. Gem would not admit the short pang of anger he felt at this; he was her pumpkin. Large eyes observed the stove with indifference, limbs folded into himself as he sat in his favorite spot. The table was perhaps the best place to watch those in the kitchen work. As it was, the cooks moved past his little spot under their workspace with apparent indifference. This was ruptured by their whispers to him and the passing of sweets down to him. As a boy of ten arcs, his sweet tooth was rampant and ravenous.

The door opened once more, his mother’s voice closer this time. Close enough, in fact, that it prompted him to look to the door. His gaze met with hers and he jumped back in surprise. The Qi’ora chuckled, a sound that reminded him of great guffawing birds. This was a laugh he knew was reserved for him and the other employees of The Rigid Rooster, replaced by a more refined giggle for the patrons. He was boy of ten arcs, but he did not hesitate to rush into her arms when she held them open for him.

They only had a few bits together, but they spent it in a comfortable embrace. Geminius had not yet filled out, a scrawny thing that settled easily into his mother’s wide lap. His head on the great girth of her bosom and his ears filled with the gentle shushing of both his mother and the food cooking around them, he was lulled easily into sleep. So easily, that it didn’t feel like much of dream. One moment his eyes were closed, the next he was engulfed in a sea of tall grass. It was as though the waking world had been nothing more than a momentary daydream. His mother’s hand on his head and his father crouched beside him, they observed everything and nothing in silence. It was a peaceful dream, to be sure, though he knew that once he awoke it would not be so.

“Go play, Pumpkin,” his mother permitted, a smile on her lips. His smile, the smile she only gave him, both playful and warm on her features.

“We’ll be right behind you,” his father assured him, winking. The deep baritone of his voice was followed by a gentle nudge that set him first walking, then running.

Was there anything that could make this better? No, Gem could not think of anything. He turned to look back at them, only to see the couple engrossed in one another. They merely stared for a bit, then looked back to where he had gone off. His mother laughed the laugh for him alone and shooed him off. A breeze cut through the still, rustling the grass and blowing through her dress. The mixed blood grinned and bounded off ahead of the pair.

His wandering took him far and he saw much. Great fishy beasts beating the air with each stroke as they regarded him as nothing more than a small thing. Small creatures building great civilizations in the reeds, freezing as his shadow crossed their paths. He watched all in amazement until it dawned on him that his parents were no longer in sight. When he next looked behind him, he was met with instead the sight of a very tired woman. Her blonde hair was mussed further by the wind, to which he could only gawk at. And for a few trills, he did so, eyes wide and the blades of grass between his fingers blown away.

Gem had been informed that strangers were not to be approached without caution, but he did so anyways. He walked through the grass towards the sleepy-looking woman. His astonishment at her presence remained even as he stood before her.

“Are you tired,” he inquired after a trill of staring.

She laughed, soft and as tired as she looked, “Always.”

“Then why not take a nap?”

She shrugged. “Come take one with me.” She held out her hand to him, the back of which was covered in a tattoo and something that shined. If he looked closer, he would see more glittering spots and tattoos that traversed her skin. He took her hand without question and the two walked towards a tree that had not been there before.

They sat in the shade as the tree’s face looked to greet them, branches hanging low to cover them like a blanket. Gem could not help the giggle that left him at the brush of the leaves against his skin. The woman beside him looked on with a smile of her own. Before he could question who this strange person was, the smell of pancakes and eggs wafted up to his nose. The scent was soon followed by plates and forks waltzing up to the pair, offering themselves up.

“I take it you’re hungry,” the woman remarked.

He grinned sheepishly and mirrored her previous response, “Always.”

She laughed again, not as soft. It was almost his mother’s laugh. “Then let’s eat.” He did not need to be told twice. As the food settled on his tongue, they melted away and his eyes widened at the taste. It was of the sweetest pumpkin pie and caramel apples one moment, then chocolates and strawberries the next. Delighted sounds left him as he dined, licking his lips. The woman wiped crumbs from the corner of his lips, stopping him for but a moment before he returned to his meal with the same vigor.

“You like it here,” he heard in his mother’s voice. When he looked up, he sat beside her. The curious woman remained to his other side, gaze expectant. Mouth full, he attempted speech before the raise of his mother’s brow stopped him. He nodded as a response instead.

“Would wish to come back?” He paused, swallowing the food in his mouth before looking up to the woman. Her eyes had narrowed slightly and she regarded him carefully. “Why would I leave?” The grave expression left her and again she laughed, no longer similar to his mother’s laugh.

His mother had left him, he realized. His gaze traveled to where she had once been, nothing more than empty space now. His attention was brought back to the woman by a hand on his shoulder.

“Gem, precious as your name,” she began, “I can make sure you come back, but you must promise me something.”

He nodded vigorously.

“You must keep this place safe. You must care for those that enter here as you have, and above all else--” she paused, her smile mischievous, “you must stay hungry.”

Gem blinked, surprised by such easy requirements. His smile returned, slow and wide. “Oh, I can do that.” His voice held strong with confidence, chest puffed out.

“Then when you next return, look for me,” she instructed.

“How?”

“Just say my name; Jesine.”

Again, Gem nodded. She placed a hand on his head, running it through the short curly hairs until her fingers reached the base of his neck. A small smile settled on her lips as she looked down at him, and in his mother’s voice said, “Time to wake up, Pumpkin.” He blinked and at once returned to reality, his mother looking down at him. Their time was up.

He detached himself from, fingers instead curling over the hem of his shirt. He didn’t speak, lest his voice betray him as he sent her off back to work. As Jesine had done, his mother’s hand rested on his head before moving to his neck to direct him close to her once more. Her lips pressed a kiss to his forehead and with one last look, she sashayed out of the kitchen and he returned to his nook under the table.

As he sat, he could still taste chocolate on his tongue.
