Non Player Characters (NPC) are used to enhance a story, a bit like supporting actors, they never get the spotlight, but help make the main character, or in this case our playable characters (PC), shine. NPC are used by prophets and players for a number of reasons, including character development, plot twists, and enriching the reading and writing experience. NPCs are used to fill a wide variety of roles, from a character's child or spouse, to an arch-enemy, employee, or shopkeeper. With Standing Trials, players can choose from the use of four different NPC types, which each have their own costs and regulations.

I. Personal NPC
II. City NPC
III. Business NPC
IV. Memory NPC
Personal NPC
Personal NPC are available for players to use as children, partners, close friends, slaves, and family members of their chosen character. This type of NPC must be applied for via the Prophet Support Forum in order to gain permission to write and keep them. Just as we pay to keep our own characters in the form of seasonal expenses, we must also pay to support any personal NPC connected to our PC. Some cities may have their own rules and regulations regarding the costs of keeping an NPC, but as a rule of thumb you can expect to pay 10 gold per season (every two months), which must be recorded on your ledger. If players wish to use someone else's NPC, they must request permission from the player who pays the upkeep for that NPC.

The exception to this is in the case of characters who are "Wilderness PCs". For these characters, Personal NPCs may have their upkeep paid for by an additional thread each season where the PC hunts/gathers sufficient amounts of food to keep them alive. This thread does not give the PC those rewards but is used to "pay off" the NPC seasonal expenses. This thread must be approved by a city moderator in the same way that a job thread would be, and has the same minimum requirements as a job thread (1500 words in length, with a focus on the task at hand). If you wish to pay for your NPC this way, please ask for special approval in your Support Forum request.

Rules for playing a Personal NPC:

I. The NPC cannot give your PC anything (unless you pay for it).
II. The NPC cannot initiate your PC into any Arcane magic.
III. You must pay to support the NPC (10gn per NPC per season or one Wilderness NPC thread per season, with special approval)
IV. The NPC should never be the main focus of the story.
V. The NPC can travel with your PC.
VI. See "Update 2" below for queries regarding NPCs and Domain Magic. Personal NPCs may not have Domain Magic.

To apply for a personal NPC, fill out the information below and post it to the Prophet Support Forum titled ‘Personal NPC’.

Memory NPC
Memory NPCs are NPCs specifically used for a character's past story. Normally these types of characters are close relatives whom are now deceased presently, however, they can be just about anything to the Player Character. These types of characters are made to enhance memory threads by weaving a story of why the Player Character became who they are presently. Memory NPCs are not to be used outside of Memory Threads. PCs must apply for Memory NPCs in the Prophet Support Forum. Please make sure to specify the NPC is a Memory NPC.

Rules for playing a Memory NPC:

Update
Personal NPCs who are used at least twice in a season (in two different threads) can earn skill point rewards (10 points per NPC, per season). It cost 10gn per season, per NPC to keep an NPC. Activity using your Personal NPCs during this time will earn you up to 10 skills points for that NPC to allocate to their skills however you please. You can submit a request for NPC rewards just as you would do for wages in your city or by posting in the Prophet Support Forum to make sure that the evidence and rewards are recorded to your Prophets' Notes.

Please note: this rule also applies to Business NPCs who are used at least twice a season. Skill allocation should be recorded either in your CS or the business write up.

Update

We are no longer allowing personal or memory NPCs to have any Domain Magic. This has been done in order to ensure game balance and acting on player feedback . However, we are also acting on feedback whereby players have explained that it is difficult to get a pc initiated into a magic due to the current restrictions, therefore we are creating a new NPC type, the “Mentor NPC”.

Mentor NPC:

For mages, the relationship between student and master is often one that is vitally important. Mages do not randomly initiate due to the limited number of students they can bring into Domain and given the low success rate and the dangers of such a practice, each student is appraised for some time before an initiator chooses them.

To be initiated by an NPC, a mage PC is now required to create a single NPC to serve as their initiator and to control in threads related to magic progression. These NPC’s are special in that they are not PB NPC’s that are fully owned by the PC who created them. As the level of power in these mages is usually fairly high, they will be treated as site NPC’s for moderator plots after creation. Consideration WILL be given to the PC who made them before the NPC might be used in a plot, but control of their fates will generally fall to the mods if that NPC would cross into a larger site plot.

A Magic Initiator must be requested in the PSF and only one per PC may be requested. The application is stipulated below. Use of these NPC’s are to be for character progression in magic. Should that player want them to feature in a personal plot, they will need to alert their city Storyteller or the approver of their PSF ticket with a short summary of what their role might be. Depending on the severity of the intervention, a moderator will either take on this role themselves or approve it for the storyline in question.

A magic mentor is the only time in which a PC can self initiate in a thread and can only be initiated in a magic the mentor holds.

A Magic Mentor NPC cannot increase their skill level under normal circumstances. However, with permission from your City mod or in PSF, alterations and advancements to skills for the NPC can be requested should the narrative need arise.

Mentor NPC Application

Name:
Age:
Race:
Organization (if any):
Skills: Domain Magic 1 (Up to 76), Domain Magic 2 (Up to 51) Domain magic 3 (Up to 45). Non magic skill (Up to 60), Non magic Skill (Up to 50), Non Magic Skill (Up to 40) A Player has a pool of 250 exp to create their Mentor NPC. Please note that, whilst unreleased magics are permitted, due to the restriction of one Mage Mentor NPC per PC, they can not be used until release under any circumstances.
Bio: In the Bio, please answer three important questions. Who is this mage? What weight of impact do they have on the world or their organization? And finally, Why is this mage seeking a student?
Appearance: Can be written or picture

Relationship: This last area is for you to prove you understand the nature of a Mentor PC. Although it does not have to be exhaustive, we are looking for the nature of the relationship that your PC will establish with their Mentor. Magic is not the story of a random old man who initiated you and vanished forever, it is the story of a relationship with a mysterious and immense power...and the person who felt that you, out of all others, deserved this chance to be a mage.

But what about my existing NPC who has magic?
Any existing NPCs with Domain Magic will be converted to Mage Mentor NPCs. Please either PSF or speak to your local Prophet who will update your PNs.

A Note on Faction & Business NPCs
If it makes sense for a faction or business to have magic-using NPCs, the rule is simple. Faction or Business NPC Mages must get signed off by the local mod before being approved in the business / faction and before any use of magic. Usually these NPC's won't become mage mentors, although it is possible with Storyteller permission. This means that it is possible to have mages in a faction or business, but they are overseen by the local prophet and can not be used as personal NPCs.
