Luvi had chatted with one of the regular volunteers at Isonomia. The woman turned out to be quite the good informant, telling her of other opportunities that the organization had going on. Luvi would be sure to keep the woman in mind in case she needed to find out about similar opporunities in the coming days. One of the things they needed help with had something to do with repairing homes in the area. It wasn’t what she had planned to do with her morning, but her fight with Nir’Wei the previous day had put her out of her normal mood for combat. Doing this work would be good for her, she thought.

“Hello, I’m here to help with the house repairs,” Luvi said as she walked up to the community center area where volunteers were supposed to meet up at. She added, “I’ve no experience building houses or repairing them, but I am a mage and I can make myself pretty strong. I could help carry things, or do other things if you wanted.” She hard learned from the last time that it was best to open with her capabilities instead of having to go through a whole conversation about them.

“A mage? Wow, okay… See those planks? We need those moved several blocks. Grab as many as you can and follow us when the rest of the volunteers arrive. The wagon that we usually use for this sort of thing broke down yesterday, so we could use the help.”

Luvi looked at the planks and nodded to herself, mentally calculating whether or not she could lift all of them. She figured that the problem would be her limited number of arms, rather than her strength. She tried to do some mental math, trying to figure how to make it work. The numbers were all jumbles in her head, however, so she decided to be conservative. “I think I could do it, though it might take me several trips.”

“Anything’s better than having to tire out the rest of the volunteers,” the man said with a curt nod.

Re: Buildy

As Luvi approached the community center, Goku was already there, his tall frame standing out among the volunteers. He had arrived early, drawn by the need to lend a hand and the promise of a hot meal for his efforts. His rugged features softened into a warm smile as he spotted Luvi.

"Hey, Luvi! Good to see that you made it," Goku greeted cheerfully, his voice carrying a deep, resonant tone. He glanced at the planks stacked nearby, noting the challenge they posed. "Looks like you're ready to jump right in. That's great!"

Without waiting for a reply, Goku moved towards the planks, his movements purposeful yet relaxed. He crouched down beside them, fingers tracing over the rough wood as he thought for a bit. Tiny runes, glowing faintly with magical energy, began to form on his exposed skin. It was a simple spell, one that bolstered his strength and endurance for physical tasks.

"Let's make this easier," he said to Luvi, flashing a grin. He grabbed a length of rope lying nearby, quickly looping it around the planks to bind them together and create makeshift handles. "You take the front, and I'll grab the back. We can carry them together."

With a grunt of effort, Goku straightened up, muscles flexing beneath his shirt as he hoisted his end of the planks. The runes on his body shimmered faintly, enhancing his strength as he waited for Luvi to take her position.

“You really are strong.” Said one of the other volunteers.

“It’s one of my few good qualities.” Goku said with a smile.

Luvi’s eyes widened as she saw what Goku was trying to accomplish. Tying everything together would make things a lot easier. “Okay, I’ll grab this end, then,” she said, drawing strength runes on herself and lifting up the planks with some effort despite her enhancements. She hoisted the bundle of planks up onto her shoulder while stabilizing them with both hands.

“Ready to go?” she called behind her. She’d pause for a few moments and then start moving alongside the group now that the rest of the volunteers had arrived.

“So, what are all these planks for?” Luvi asked, “This seems like a lot to make simple repairs.”

“A lot of homes are in disrepair and need a lot of work done,” explained the foreman. “We might not need them all, but we usually go through a good amount of planks. We have tools to cut them to the appropriate sizes which allows us to reinforce some areas of the homes. Of course it’s not a perfect fix in every case. Sometimes all we can do is patch a hole in the wall or fix some roofing. Sometimes the right material for the job is stone or brick but we haven’t got much of those this morning.” He pushed along a wheelbarrow filled with large stones and bricks in case they needed them.

“I see,” Luvi said, “I wouldn’t mind practicing a little with a saw.”

They would soon arrive at the first house and Luvi got her wish. The foreman handed her a saw and told her about how large to start cutting.

Re: Buildy

Goku listened carefully to the foreman's instructions, absorbing the information like a sponge. The first task was straightforward: cut a few planks to size and reinforce a wall that had started to bow outwards. Luvi handled the saw which was convenient for the rest of them even if she was a beginner. Once she had cut through the wood, Goku took the planks and held them in place against the wall.

With the plank firmly held as instructed, the other builders moved in with nails and hammers, securing the wood to the existing structure. Goku watched as they hammered the nails in at a slight angle, ensuring a tighter and more durable fit. They explained what they were doing during the rhythm of their work, how they alternated hammer strikes to avoid splitting the wood and how they checked for alignment constantly to maintain the structure's integrity.

As they moved on to the next section, Goku felt more confident. The team worked like a well-oiled machine, each member knowing their role and contributing to the task at hand. Goku's role was to provide the muscle, holding heavy beams in place while others secured them. Despite the physical strain, he found it rewarding to see the immediate results of their efforts.

In one instance, they needed to repair a roof. Goku climbed up to help steady the ladder while another volunteer climbed up with the necessary tools. He handed up planks, watching as they were carefully positioned and nailed into place. The foreman explained the importance of overlapping the setions to ensure that water would run off properly and not seep into the house.

Re: Buildy

Luvi didn’t help much with the actual building. She was too busy trying to saw the planks. They needed them faster than she could cut them, so someone else had to help her out. Using a saw was not like using a blade, as she thought it would be. It didn’t simply cut through in one clean motion. She had to move the saw back and forth in order to make it all the way through a plank, and even then the edges she made were oddly shaped. She also found that the saw bent more often than not.

“You’ve got to make sure you’re moving the saw straight,” she was told by an older man who looked like he knew what he was doing. Despite him having at least twenty years on her, he cut through the plank more quickly than she could because of his technique.

Luvi furrowed her brow and tried again, trying to keep the saw straight. It helped but that was hardly the only thing she was doing wrong. Still, she did her best to meet the demand for more and more pieces of wood to be cut.

It wasn’t long before all the wood was cut and they stated using brick instead. This was a little easier to work with. Someone had a big bucket of a cement-like mixture which she was instructed to lather. She found the viscosity of the mixture intriguing. It felt like she was handling a thick paste. She wondered whether this stuff had been made using alchemy.

Re: Buildy

When it came time to switch to bricklaying, he felt a sense of relief. Bricks were much lighter than holding up large pieces of wood. The task seemed straightforward: Luvi would spread the cement-like mixture, and Goku would place the bricks.

As Luvi lathered the thick paste onto the wall, Goku grabbed the first brick. He carefully positioned it, pressing it into the mixture with a firm yet gentle touch to ensure it adhered properly. The texture of the mixture felt gritty under his fingers, and he could feel it squishing slightly as he applied pressure. He made sure the brick was aligned with the others before stepping back to admire his work.

"Alright, next one," he said, grabbing another brick. The process quickly became rhythmic. Luvi spread the paste, and Goku followed with a brick. One of the more experienced builders stopped him from time to time to handle the subtle details that made a difference, like making sure each brick was level and ensuring there were no gaps in the mixture that might weaken the structure.

"Looks good," he muttered to himself, placing another brick. "This is starting to feel like a workout," he said with a chuckle, glancing over at Luvi.

Goku continued stacking the bricks, finding a steady pace that matched Luvi's application of the cement. One of the builders occasionally used a small tool to scrape off excess paste, making sure the joints were neat and uniform. The repetitive nature of the task was oddly satisfying, and he could see the wall gradually taking shape.

Re: Buildy

“This isn’t so bad,” Luvi said when they were finally done with the second home that needed work done. She’d long since absorbed the ether from her runes back into her body and applied endurance runes. She needed the relief from all the repetitiveness. The repetitive motions over a long period of time made her muscles throb. She’d gone on for hours but even she had her limits.

“How much longer?” Luvi asked at the risk of sounding like an impatient child who wanted it to be over.

“Getting tired are ya?”

“Yes, very,” Luvi said bluntly. “I am enjoying the work but it’s just so hot. I did commit to a full work day but if I knew how many homes were left… it might help.”

“I was only teasing,” said the foreman. “we don’t ask for a full day. We break for our mid day meal then we rotate out with the next set of volunteers. Not everyone can commit that much time. Many of us have jobs to get back to. I’m only here because my next contract for my job isn’t starting for another few trials.”

“Oh,” Luvi said when the realization hit her. “I do want to stick around, maybe for another few hours after lunch. It’s interesting seeing how this sort of thing is done.”

Lunch came soon after her brief conversation. They had leftovers at Isonomia’s soup kitchen which meant that it was ‘free’ even if they did deserve it for all their hard work. After that, some volunteers left and others joined in.

Re: Buildy

Goku felt a wave of satisfaction as he finished his second bowl of soup. The hearty, warm meal was just what he needed after the strenuous work. "This soup is pretty good," he said, giving another voluteer a thumbs up. She smiled tiredly, clearly sharing his appreciation for the much-needed break.

As they rested, Goku's eyes wandered over to the new supplies that had been brought in. A fresh delivery of wood and bricks stood ready for use. The sight invigorated him. He enjoyed the physical labor and the tangible results of their efforts. "Looks like we've got more materials to move," he said, pointing towards the piles.

Goku got to his feet. He grabbed the first stack of wood, balancing the planks on his shoulder. The weight was manageable for him with his runes. He moved quickly and efficiently, ferrying the materials to the next job site. As he placed the wood down, he returned for the bricks, loading them into a wheelbarrow and pushing it over.

The foreman noticed their renewed energy and walked over, clapping Goku on the back. "You two are doing great. This next house is in pretty rough shape, so your help is much appreciated."

Goku smiled, appreciating the acknowledgment. "We’re happy to help. Just show us what needs to be done. We’re only doing the heavy lifting. It’s the rest of you who are actually making sure the repairs are done well."

They arrived at the next house, which was visibly more damaged than the previous ones. Goku's mind tried to assess the situation. Before he could make a suggestion someone said "Looks like we'll need to reinforce this entire wall.”

Re: Buildy

Luvi helped Goku carry some supplies to the next home. She made three trips in total, taking her time and pacing herself appropriately. There was no sense in using up all her energy trying to carry everything in one go if she still had hours of work left to do. She got smiles from a few people as she worked. They were people just going about their day, but they appreciated the work that the volunteers were doing for the community. Luvi didn’t often get looked at like that.

“Say, what is this stuff,” Luvi asked, finally setting down a sack of what she could only assume was sand or grain based on how it sifted in the container. She didn’t see what purpose either served in repairing a home.

“It’s sand. We mix it with lime to make mortar,” explained the foreman.

“Mortar?”

“The material you were working with earlier to help glue bricks together. It’s called mortar.”

“Oh,” Luvi said, wondering if this was some sort of alchemical mixture. “Is that it? Lime and sand? I don’t see how that makes anything like a paste.”

“Well, those aren’t the only ingredients. There’s a binders and additives that we use.” He walked over to a large, empty container and started pouring things into it. “Hoist that bag up and pour out the sand slowly, would you?”

Luvi did as requested, increasingly interested in this alchemical formula. She asked lots of questions and learned the surface level details of how to make mortar. She was told the exact formula that they used, but it was hard to keep track of all the ratios. She settled for memorizing the ingredients, thinking that if she ever did want to replicate the mixture she could do some experimentation to figure it out.

“Now keep it stirring it,” the foreman instructed once the mixture started getting thick. “If you let it sit for too long it’ll dry up and then it’s useless to us. Got to keep it mushy.”

“Got it,” Luvi said, taking a large wooden rod in her hands and stirring it. It reminded her a lot of stirring the soup from the day before, but this was a lot more intensive and she didn’t have to worry so much about spilling it. It did strain her muscles, though. It wasn’t often that she did motions that required a circular stirring motion. It stressed her biceps and back and chest all at the same time. She efficiently used the power her body could muster to keep a steady pace.

She would keep stirring as the various volunteers took some out little by little to lay down bricks to help repair the wall. This went on until the wall was finished, after which Luvi’s arms were burning fiercely. Performing those repetitive motions for so long had exhausted her despite her endurance runes. She would surely regret not taking breaks.

“That’s all for today, I think,” the foreman said. It’d been a particularly tough job. While Luvi had focused on the one wall, others had busied themselves with other repairs around the dilapidated home.

Luvi let out a tired groan as she stretched. “At least it was a good workout.”

“That, and you get a token for helping us out,” said the foreman.

“A token?”

“Yes, institutions in Rharne, well mostly taverns and things like that, give tokens if you help them. Isonomia’s no different. You can use them almost like currency.”

“Huh, that’s pretty neat,” Luvi said. She suddenly felt excited at the prospects of getting rewarded for her volunteer time.

She’d wave to Goku when he wrapped up so they could go get some well deserved rest.

Re: Buildy

Goku got to work helping the team lay down bricks. His hands moved with purpose, grabbing the bricks and carefully positioning them on the freshly spread mortar. The mixture was thick and viscous, making it perfect for securing the bricks in place. He could see the wall taking shape, brick by brick.

The process was methodical. Goku would pick up a brick, dip it slightly into the mortar to coat the bottom, and then press it firmly into place on the growing wall. His muscles flexed and strained, but the repetitive motion was oddly satisfying. The rhythmic nature of the task gave him a moment to think and reflect.

The other workers moved alongside Goku, occasionally checking the alignment of the bricks and ensuring that the wall was straight. "Make sure to stagger the bricks," he advised, demonstrating how to overlap them for added strength. Goku nodded, quickly adapting to the technique and appreciating the foreman's guidance.

As the sun climbed higher in the sky, the temperature rose, making the labor even more demanding. Sweat trickled down Goku's forehead, but he welcomed the physical challenge. He glanced over at Luvi, who was still diligently stirring the mortar mixture. She was so much stronger than when they’d met.

"You're doing great!" he called out, giving her an encouraging smile.

Goku continued laying bricks, his hands moving more smoothly as he built up experience. The wall was steadily growing, each brick adding to the stability and strength of the structure. He couldn't help but feel a deep respect for the builders who did this kind of work every day. It was tough, demanding, and required a lot of skill and patience.

After a while, the foreman called for a short break. Goku took the opportunity to help sweep up some of the debris that had accumulated around the worksite. He grabbed a broom and began sweeping up the bits of broken brick and dust, clearing the area to make it safer and more organized for everyone.

As he worked, Goku noticed how the simple act of cleaning up made a significant difference. The area looked neater, and it was easier to move around without tripping over debris.

"Alright, let's get back to it," the foreman said after the break. "We've got a bit more to do before this wall is complete."

Goku nodded and returned to his task, picking up bricks and laying them down with renewed energy. The end of the day was in sight, and he wanted to finish strong. As the final bricks were laid and the wall stood tall and sturdy, Goku stepped back to admire their handiwork. The foreman inspected the wall, nodding in approval. "Good job, everyone. This is solid work."

Together, they cleaned up the remaining debris and tools, ensuring the worksite was tidy before heading off. It had been a long and tiring day, but the sense of fulfillment and the knowledge that they had helped improve someone's home made it all worthwhile.
