The Beasts Within (Tor, Rak,Cir)

Image
17th of Ashan

It was a blessing that the light had finally returned to the sky with the advent of Ashan. It was still chilly and patches of snow clung to the ground but at the very least the shadows of the moon had abated for the arc.

Rose wasn’t really sure why she kept volunteering to be the one to go outside the city and into the Lori. Perhaps she did it more than many of the healers at the Medicine House but she never strayed far from Desnind. It wasn’t as if she had to journey a great distance to collect herbs. Regardless, she was on the outskirts of the city in the trees once again with her teeth chattering and the weight of her bow tugging at her shoulders.

“An animal attack you said?” The redhead asked incredulously, turning to face two women standing beside her. One was the very familiar and very irritable face of Mish’oa, a local medicine woman who often worked with Rose. The two women had never seen eye to eye on much anything but Mish’oa was at least reliable and Rose strangely trusted the middle aged Sev’ryn healer.

Yes, attack.” Mish’oa replied. “Just animal who stray too far.” The dark haired woman added dismissively in broken Common.

At that moment another voice interjected hotly.

“I beg your pardon but that was not just some animal who wandered into the city! Something was wrong with it, from what the victim said, the beast was ill.” The second woman added. She was roughly Mish’oa’s age although she was clearly human and had long blonde hair that was bound into a thick braid. The woman wore a dark brown dress embroidered with leaves along the trim. She was Rue Westfield, the head physician at the Order of the Adunih outpost in town. Many people knew her face although few trusted the Order over the local healers of the Olọravu Slosneppe.

However it was the Order of the Adunih and Rue that had asked that someone look into this matter of animal attacks since it appeared from eye witness accounts that the animals were strangely ill. Rose had volunteered to represent the local healers at the Medicine house and a call had gone out to anyone else in the village that was willing to help with the investigation.

Rose sighed heavily when the two women began to argue. The young healer shouldered her medical bag and straightened the quiver of arrows affixed to her hip. She wore a light set of leather armor beneath a long sleeved green over-dress that reached her knees, along with leather boots and a sensible pair of wool pants.

The gloom of the Makubwa Lori lay ahead of her and the safety of Desnind behind her. While the two older women debated the need for this expedition, Rose waited for others to hopefully join them. Mish’oa and Rue would be staying behind in the city, so Rose knew there was a slight chance that she might be doing this alone.

Silently, she hoped that was not the case.

Re: The Beasts Within (Tor, Rak)

Title and date
Tor’ree groaned and tried to pop her neck while walking out of her home. She needed time to try and figure out who was going to fight against the animals. Or what people were calling animals; something was not sitting right with the huntress. True lately, her work had slipped. But now that it was time to really push back into her work. The creatures in the forest were attacking people and acting as if something was bothering them. Tor’ree wanted to get to the bottom of what was happening with the creatures of the forest. The girl walked towards one of the hunter’s fire pits to talk with any of the other hunters.

“Hello young one,” called an older man as he looked up.

“Hello, have you been out in the forest lately?” Tor’ree asked sitting across from him.

“Yes, it is becoming a far more dangerous place than ever before. The animals are attacking in droves, yet nothing seems like a true hunting pack. I barely made it away from a rouge animal that looked half dead. When suddenly it just backed away from the attack. If you insist on going out beyond the wall, make sure you are in a group,” he stated and looked away.

Shocked at his words, the girl stood up and thanked him before walking away from the pit. So what the others had said was true. That made her more curious and now slightly worried about others leaving the city. It wasn’t the belief that she could really do anything. A hunter yes, a fighter not so much which tended to make her more of a liability. At least in her mind it did, but there was never a time when she wanted to be weak.

“Let’s just go to the wall and just see who or what is there,” Tor’ree whispered to herself.

Moving that direction, she took her time getting there. The woman was trying to listen out for what anyone around her was saying. Surely there was more people out talking about the happening of Ashen. Cylus had been eventful, but nothing to this degree. It did not take long at the steady pace to reach the wall. The sight that welcomed her was what caught her attention, two older females and a third with her quiver on her hip. She decided to approach the group and see if they could use an extra pair of eyes.

“Hello, are you going out into the forest?” Tor’ree called walking up to them.

Re: The Beasts Within (Tor, Rak)

Cirrina had no pity for them.

Weak things were eaten, it was the way of things but only two legs and their bleeding hearts couldn’t seem to grasp such a simple concept. They raved about monsters and beasts, as they always did with things they didn’t understand. But the mer herself held a soft spot for anything with teeth as sharp as her own, a taste for flesh though she didn’t envy their hunting methods as she much preferred her prey to come to her on their own.

“I doubt there is need for this.”

“You doubt there’s need for anything that requires effort.”

Her lips curled at Marin, her voice was even sharper than her expression as her pace quickened, the wall in sight “Animals eat. They live in a forest, what else should these fools expect? That everything wishes to be their friend and frolic around?”

Marin only smiled at her, the urge to throttle him rising up as it always did. The infuriating man had been nothing but a smug little bug lately. She’d happily squash him if she still didn’t need him. The mer grit her teeth, refusing to be baited into what she was sure he’d require of her.

“Well?”

“Well what.”

It wasn’t a question but his smile only grew wider, “Aren’t you going to go ask if they need assistance?”

“I don’t see what this proves, Marin,”
she hissed through clenched teeth, her jaw wound so tightly it hurt, “that you can force me into helping someone? Why not just actually force me and make this easier for us both.”

That made him frown, “And that is exactly why I won’t. I told you I would not—“

“And yet you have before.”

“Enough. You will do as agreed.”
He words were firm though his voice never rose, head jerking towards the group they had spotted as they approached the outer forests of the city.

“…I hope I find something that I can bring back to eat you.” To emphasize her point she gnashed her teeth at his nose, leaning in close to steal a kiss if she hadn’t wished so badly to bit his lips off his smug face. Before she could decide to do either of the furious thoughts the mer whipped away from her mentor, leaving him at the walls to approach the group, her expression furious as she fought the urge to roll her eyes.

“You are all here for find out why people get eaten when they go into a forest?”

The words were scathing as she stared at the group of woman gathered, but her appearance spoke of readiness. Armed with her waist satchels, sheathed dagger wedged obviously between her breasts her gaze didn’t linger on them but to the trees and greenery that lay before them. In her hand she fiddled with a finger bone, the only one she’d brought but the motions soothed a bit of her anger the familiar feel of the bone giving her something to focus on other than the two loggers ignorance of the obvious.

“You realize that animals eat, did it never occur to you that their tastes have…broadened?”

If Cirrina had to go on this trip perhaps she could derail it before it started.
OOC
I talked to Rose about joining, Cir is currently in her human form btw :D

Re: The Beasts Within (Tor, Rak,Cir)

Rakvald was busying himself, setting up his homestead when the word came of animals entering Desnind proper, and actually attacking people. The pig farmer did not find this unusua on first hearing itl. Afterall, he’d lived in areas throughout his long generations that harbored the worst and strongest predators. He’d herded animals amidst these deadly predators as well, suffering losses time after time. A good herdsman was more than just that. He was a protector when they needed his body to shield them from harm, he was their King when they needed to be ordered, and he was a hunter when their predators hid and skulked about the hills.

Since arriving in the forests of Desnind, he’d swiftly adjusted to the status quo of the environs. If it wasn't odd for the predators to be attacking people within the city, then why would they report it? It may not be a regular occurence to happen within the protected glades of Desnind. Their concern was enough to get his attention and earn the people complaining about the attacks his ear.

He followed the rumors of hunters and helpers gathering to settle this problem, for good and all. He arrived at the designated gathering point, where a handful of women were also gathered. Rakvald lifted and tipped his leather cap to each of them. He was dressed in his furs and leathers, with his studded leather armor over that. He carried a few of the trappings of caring for the injuries and diseases of beasts, in case these animals were not normally predators but indeed animals beset by some hurt or hidden pain. While conventional medicine could be useful, it took one who understood an animal’s needs to care for it’s wounds.

”I hear hurt animals hurt peoples.” Rakvald said in broken common. ”I help. I know how help animal’s hurts, maybe calm the buggers?”

Only one of the women he recognized, the woman with the dagger tucked into her cleavage. He had met her upon his arrival to Desnind. He nodded and winked at the buxom wench, with a smile. ”Hello, lady. Meet again.”

Re: The Beasts Within (Tor, Rak,Cir)

Thankfully it appeared that Rose would not be going alone on this expedition. There was a Sev’ryn huntress who approached and asked if they would be going out into the Lori.

Rue, the head of the Order nodded curtly. “Aye, we believe there is a sickness plaguing the creatures. We’d appreciate any help you can offer, hopefully you know your way through the wood.” The healer nodded with a critical eye toward Tor’ree.

Mish’oa released a barking laugh as she waved off Rue’s all too serious tone.

“Fine, check animals, see if you don’t get eaten for poking nose where it does not belong.” The older medicine woman turned, smiling to herself and departed, leaving Rose, Tor’ee and Rue standing alone at the city’s edge.

Rose pursed her lips irritably. “I’d say she’s normally nicer...but that would be a lie.” The young healer quipped dryly while wrinkling her nose distastefully.

As Mish’oa departed, two others joined the party forming at the edge of the forest. The first was a young woman was dark hair and eyes. There was something dangerous about her...almost predatory and inhuman.

She reminded the healer of Mish’oa already; ill mannered, and dismissive of others problems. Rose tried to hide her distaste as well as she could, after all maybe the woman was nicer than she was acting.

Probably not the case...but one could always hope.

“Um, yes.” The red haired woman replied in response to the other woman as her amber eyes flickered over the other female’s face.

“The animals aren’t just here because they are hungry, they are more aggressive than before and violent. We need to know why. If it’s a sickness then maybe we can treat it.”

The other man drew close to the small semi-circle of individuals. He was enormous and stood nearly two feet over Rose’s diminutive form. His language was broken but it seemed that he had some experience with working with animals. That would come in handy.

“That will be helpful, but first we need to find one of them so we can figure out what is wrong.“

Rue waved the group toward the woodland before departing herself. “Good luck everyone, try to be back before sundown.”

With that Rose set off, presumably with the other three following behind her.

The young healer stepped lightly and carefully through a narrow trail still dotted with melting snow. Her pack softly thumped against her back as they moved further into the darkness of the forest and the sounds and smells of Desnind vanished behind them.

The dark twilight of the Lori surrounded the group, as did a strange and eerie silence where normally there would be the sound of birds chirping and deer darting beneath the trees. Rose felt goosebumps prickle across her skin. They had been walking for over an hour and the silence had only deepened.

The soft newborn green of Ashan and the sprinklings of snow they had been encountering thus far began to vanish as the group came upon a large clearing in the woodland where the grasses had blackened and for some reason the snow was already melted here.

It was like a scar in the middle of the forest and at the center of that scar were a pair of Arnabari who’s normally bright brown hides were flecked with blackened scars and their eyes appeared almost clouded as if the animals were lost in a haze.

The pair pawed almost mindlessly at the ground as if they weren’t quite “there” any more.

Rose knelt down in the grass at the edge of the blackened clearing. She had seen Arnabari before, they were normally peaceful forest grazers, but these looked half crazed. The healer crouched down and her booted foot landed on a branch which popped upon breaking in half.

The sound was faint but enough to tip off the two beasts who’s heads shot up.

The Arnabari’s sides heaved heavily like they were gasping for breath and within a spilt trill they were charging toward the group.

“Oh no…” Rose whispered in a panic as she dove away from the creatures racing toward them with a maddened gleam in their eyes.

“Don’t hurt them!” She shouted as she rolled away from the oncoming hooves. They needed to catch the Arnabari if they were going to get to the bottom of this.

Re: The Beasts Within (Tor, Rak,Cir)

Rakvald smiled as the healer invited them ahead of the wilderness. As he passed by Cirrina, he gave her upper back a friendly thumping with his open hand. The hand went far above the mark he’d prefer to hit, but it was another step in the right direction as far as he was concerned. There’d be time for playfulness later on, if she was willing.

He still was not quite used to the wilderness, and probably wouldn’t in a lifetime or more. It all depended on how much time he wanted to spend here. Even so, the sweetness of Desnind, even coming out of winter, was alluring. But he was cautious about it. A barren land like Quacia thrived on its ill-begotten monstrosities, as a food source. But in this verdant woodland, what wondrous monsters must be allowed to grow and thrive? Rakvald was ready to greet the new day with his new friends, and with the hope of finding new adventures and dangers.

He was stricken somewhat by the relative silence of the deep forest, compared to the ambient tumult of Desnind. It set his nerves on edge, which probably wasn’t a good thing if they were going to handle panicked and diseased animals. He nevertheless soldiered ahead of Rose and the others, holding his shepherd’s crook in his hands, a useful tool for subduing tamed animals. He could only hope for the best when it came to hooking wild ones.

Soon enough, they happened on a clearing, where there were two animals that looked as if they’d strayed from a herd. They didn’t appear overly dangerous, although every animal was a danger when panicked and set to stampede.

He crouched beside Rose and the rest who followed her. He observed the animals carefully. They appeared listless, without any driving motivation to even graze at the ground. Most definitely some sickness had taken them. Rakvald’s eyes narrowed, he wondered if they were creep-infected, but dismissed that thought as a paranoia for another place and time. There were many other ailments that could cause such a malaise.

Just then, somebody’s foot broke a branch. The noise combinned with that of the rest of the group sneaking along, was enough to alert the long-ears. The long-ears charged them with all their force, as if all the wolves in the wood were after them.

Rakvald strode with long legs toward the side, and held out his shepherd’s crook, hoping that it might snare one of the long-ears by the neck. ”No hurt!” He said firmly, but softly. ”No hurt Long-ears! Nice long-ears!”

Re: The Beasts Within (Tor, Rak)

Cirrina blinked at the man before her lips curved in a much more welcoming smile, she had wondered vaguely what had become of the man she’d met before. Now she might get to see the fruits of her…helpfulness last time. When he thumped her in the back she started a bit at the strange gesture before smiling again, “You needn’t be so formal, you can call me Cir.”

As she spoke she slipped towards him, sticking by his side as they walked deeper into the forest, the gloom pressing upon them like Cylus’ darkness had the season before. Her eyes narrowed as they did, wishing for her tentacles to pick her way through the ground easier or to be in the water hunting with less noise. In her mind it would be simpler to lay a trap of bait and see what came about.

“You act as if animals don’t fight, food is not the only reason to get rid of those in your territory.” The mer replied sharply, humans were always looking for ways to try and fit things in ways that satisfied them. They had no respect for the raw savagery and beauty in that. “And if they aren’t sick, what is your plan? Or worse if they are, you’ll take a murderous beast back to a city terrified of them?”

The words were almost mocking but no less true, and she only grew silent the deeper the walked, wary now. It reminded her of baiting sharks into a frenzy, only for once she was blood. But it was nothing with teeth that they found. Only simpleton creatures that beat at the ground and though Cirrina could not say she was familiar with land beasts it was an odd thing to see. They reminded her of the beasts the two leggers were so fond of riding but any other observation was cut short as it surged forward, their ‘leader’ be as useful as the foliage around them.

With quickness she pulled out her dagger, her own teeth bared in a feral snarl as they charged, her voice a hiss of irritation, “Then I’ll only maim it enough for you to fix it, healer!”

But she was not as sure footed on land, her swipe flying wild as while her body dove to the side to avoid being trampled. The impact pried her dagger from her fingers but they only curled into pitiful claws, ready to bodily attack the beast if it ran at her again. The large man trying to hook on with his staff but would more likely break its neck. A pity since they were interesting but fair was fair and she had no designs to die trampled by some addled brained land mutt. She'd rather eat it.

Re: The Beasts Within (Tor, Rak,Cir)

Title and date
Tor’ree nodded and looked when several other people approached. One was a man with a bald head and a long beard. The other was a female that seemed to have an issue with them. Normally the Sev’ryn would not be worried about the behaviors of the animals, but with so many unsettled the girl had to at least see it for herself.

“Yes, I will come. The town being so unsettled has caused my interest to be peeked. I doubt there will be much I can do. I am not one of the more skilled hunters, but even those better than I will not go out alone,” Tor’ree explained.

Her gaze fell upon the older women that was off to the side of them. Her snide remark was not the first that the black haired huntress figured they would hear that day. She expected many more to think the pair crazy. Determined eyes returned to the red head that had addressed her first.

“She will not be the first I am sure,” Tor’ree said.

Her attention turned to two others that had walked up to join them. A female that seemed to have the same temperament as the old woman. She stayed quiet listening to her as the woman commented on the animals wanting to eat more than just each other. That could certainly be true, but something felt different about what was happening. A quick flick of the eyes greeted the female with her red headed companion for just a moment before turning her attention back to the other.

“There is something different about this. It does not feel right and none of the hunters are willing to go out alone. I meet with one earlier, he spoke of disease in them. Something far more primal than what they normally have,” Tor’ree explained.

The second that had approached was a male. He seemed to have a hard time talking to them. Looking over him, she decided he was from another place and had come to visit the city. The woman doubted he planned on staying long; though him wanting to step up and help them figure out what happened to the animals helped her nerves some. At least he would be a bigger target than the three females.

Tor’ree followed the healer when they began to exit the city. Moving as quietly as she could, the girl tried to watch her feet as much as she could. The last thing she wanted was to be the one that got every animal in the forest charging at them. Tor’ree went down to a stealth walk when they got close to a clearing. Her heart rate picked up as the group saw a couple of Arnabari. The girl tried to move so that a tree was between her and the creatures while watching them.

The vacant stare on their faces caused a cold chill to go down her spine. A loud snap made her breath hitch for nearly three trills, the girl’s eyes moved to the side. At least for the trill before the animals charged them. Jerking backwards, the girl grabbed her bow and arrows. Taking over the woman tried to aim without hitting anyone else. Once the animal was past the others of her group, she took a shot at the legs. Though she was off shooting just behind the leg.

Re: The Beasts Within (Tor, Rak,Cir)

Image
The shepherd's crook slipped over the neck of the first creature and Rak soon found himself jerked off his feet briefly and being hurled after the creature he had snared. Thankfully for hs large and impressive size the Lothar managed to slow the Arnabari down to the point that the sickened animal was huffing too a sudden halt with it’s sides heaving from the effort of trying to knock the hook loose. The sickened Arnabari screeched angrily before roughly rearing backwards to try and free itself, kicking outwards with it’s hooved forelegs at the Lothar.

The second Arnabari dashed past Cirrina, knocking her blow wild and leaving her exposed and only armed with her claws if there was a second attack. Luckily for her Tor’ree was taking aim at that very moment just as the large deer-like creature sprinted past Cir and the huntress loosed her arrow.

Perhaps Tor’ree had not meant to injure the Arnabari or perhaps she had, regardless the animal went tumbling to the ground with a bloodied arrow jutting through the lower half of it’s hind leg. It warbled in pain and was soon shuddering on the ground as scarlet liquid leaked from it’s limb. The creature just seemed terrified and confused rather than rabid, but at least for the moment it was immobile.

“Why did you have to hurt it?” Rose snapped with a sharp look toward Tor’ree. She had likely been trying to protect the group but the healer had not intended for this all to end in blood. The red haired young woman glanced worridly at Rakvald.

“Do you have that one under control?” she asked as the beast reared back and tried to kick him and the hook off. While asking this the healer dashed toward the injured animal and began to remove her medical bag from her shoulder in order to find some bandages and gauze to stop the bleeding.

“Keep it still.” She said, nodding toward Cir and Tor’ree. Just as Rose knelt beside the bloody leg something strange happened within the clearing.

The soft green shadows of the Lori shifted to a dark and hazy azure blue, the temperature also dropped suddenly. Everyone within the group would find that their breath was appearing in foggy puffs from their mouths as if they were back in the dead of Cylus. Rose shivered, her gaze along with everyone else’s was drawn back toward the center of the clearing where the grasses were blackened. It was as if something there demanded their attention, and they had no choice but to look upon it.

There standing above the black corruption infested grasses was a creature….or perhaps it was better described as an entity. It was made from dark sapphire undulating shadows that outlined a roughly humanoid figure. Where its head should be were only a pair of diamond bright pinpricks of light. It was impossible to tell if it was male or female, only that it was something that was trying very hard to appear human.

The entity took a soft silent step toward the group, it’s footfalls were utterly and completely silent. It was almost like it was floating rather than walking.

Everyone there would feel as if they were utterly frozen in place once they locked eyes with the creature, including the Arnabari who had ceased in their struggles. The long eared beasts only gazed in horror at the entity with their clouded eyes.

Rose’s breath came from her in a puff of white as she tried to resist the paralysis that was locking her in place on her knees beside the injured animal. While she couldn’t move, she could still speak, as could everyone else there.

“No one move.” She whispered in terror. If she could have trembled in that moment the healer would have been shaking like a leaf.

Was this entity the source of the corruption in the forest? Was it what they had been sent to find? It certainly seemed like a monster who would have the power to cause the sickness plaguing the Lori.

If anyone looked closely, every step the entity took through the sickened black grasses would notice that footprints were left behind which exposed perfectly green healthy grass. As if the entity’s footsteps had purged the sickness from wherever it walked.

Ever nearer it drew to the group and the sickened Arnabari, step by terrifying step.
Off Topic
Once the entity makes eye contact with you, you will find yourself paralyzed. You may speak and attempt to resist the paralyzing effect, however this would likely take a substantial amount of discipline or experience in meditation. You may be lucky enough to gain control of your hand or a single limb if you have some proficiency in either of those two skills.

Re: The Beasts Within (Tor, Rak,Cir)

The pull of the wild arnabari nearly took Rakvald off of his feet, as his shepherd's crook snared its neck. He was impressed with the beast's vitality, truth be told. If it was this strong in illness, it must be quite formidable in decent health. He may just have to snare a few for his own herd, at some point in the future. For now, the immediate concern was to make sure the creature did not harm itself with it's struggles against his crook.

He was well ahead of Rose's thinking on securing the beast. Largely oblivious to the scene unfolding around him, his focus was on the creature that he'd brought down. With a long reach of his arm, he attempted to calm the beast with a touch of its tailbone, scratching it there to give it some relief and hopefully calm it down. That tended to work with domestic animals, he could only hope wild animals were much the same. At any rate, his other hand still maintained it's hold over the crook, to keep the creature down on the ground as the healer attended to it.

The group wasn't left alone for long, however, as a large creature appeared before them. Rakvald was immediately paralyzed by the beast, though he fought against this sensation with all his discipline. He had faced far greater foes in past generations, but none that could compel him to stand stock still and render him witless. Well, more witless than usual, anyway.

He stared in horror as the thing approached, tensing his muscles though he could barely move. He wanted to aid the Arnabari he'd brought down, do anything to keep that creature away from their catch, who he now took personal responsibility for.

His eyes turned from Cirrina, to Tor'ree to Rose, wondering if they were suffering the same effects as he.
