[Scalvoris] Fauna

Tiny Tuck
Image
Name: Tiny Tuck
Quick Facts: Extremely Large, Camouflage as boulders and stones, very strong skin and shell and bones, Incredibly long lifespan
Height: 1m-6m+ (will continue to grow its entire life)
Width: 1m-6m+ (will continue to grow its entire life)
Length: 2m-12m+ (will continue to grow its entire life)
Weight: 300lbs+ (will continue to grow its entire life)
Native to: Ol' Tuck's Run, Scalvoris
Locations: Ol' Tuck's Run, Scalvoris
Resources: Skin (highly resistant to slash), Boulder Shell

Appearance: Tiny Tucks are the largest of the turtles and tortoises that live around Ol' Tuck's Run. Their shells appear to look exactly like the granite boulders around the river, and if their are hidden within the shell, its almost impossible to differentiate them. The males and females are the same in all manner in appearances. Their skin is dark grey, typically darker than their shell.

Habitat: Tiny Tucks are found mostly around Ol' Tuck's Run. But when breeding they can be found as far as the low foothills of Scaltoth Mountains, coastlines, and other rivers or lakes. They seem to always stick to rocky areas or well watered areas.

Lifespan and Development: Tiny Tuck's true lifespan is unknown. As far as Scalvoran researchers can tell, none have ever perished from old age. They can breed after reaching about five years of age, and lay large eggs that are camouflaged as rocks near running water. The main difference is these eggs are just as fragile as any other. The eggs hatch after a half arc. The babies reach maturity and adult size at about five arcs of age.

Diet: Tiny Tucks are strictly herbivores, and will eat any and all plant life. This includes leaves, stems, bark, roots, berries, fruits, and vegetables. They seem to be immune to most plant based toxins and poisons, and most of their time is spent foraging.

Temperament: Tiny Tucks are extremely docile, having no need to be aggressive or even fight back. When attacked, they hide within their boulder strength shell until it is safe once more. Most creatures don't even bother to try and kill one, as many a tooth and claw have been broken on their hide and shell.

Abilities: Tiny Tucks don't have any special abilities. Their skin is as tough as stone, and their shells even tougher.

Snatcher
Image
Name: Snatcher
Quick Facts: Excellent at hiding, long bite reach, lightning fast
Height: .5-1 ft
Width: .5-1 ft
Length: 1-2 ft
Weight: 10-20 lbs
Native to: Ol' Tuck's Run
Locations: Ol' Tuck's Run
Resources: Sinew, harvested from the neck muscles, used for cords, crossbow or bow strings, etc.

Appearance: The Snatcher Turtle is smaller compared to many of its brethren. It is always dark brown, to blend in with the mud on the banks of Ol Tuck's Run. It is smooth, sleek and uniform, ideal for camouflaging itself. It has an incredibly long neck compared to normal turtles, which is the key to its role in the ecosystem.

Habitat: The Snatcher strictly lives within the mud and waters of Ol' Tuck's Run, and it is very rare to be found outside of those areas. As a turtle, much of its life is spent in the water, finding new places to hide itself in order to catch prey. It can live in the briny waters where the river meets the coast, but cannot permanently live in the ocean.

Lifespan and Development: The Snatcher can live for about 20 arcs or so. Every Saun it lays its eggs in the mud, and the babies hatch in Vhalar. It takes about an arc for them to become fully grown.

Diet: Snatchers are strictly carnivorous, preferring to feast upon fish and other reptiles in the river. It lies in wait in holes and crevices or hidden in the mud waiting for prey to come by. The strike is incredibly fast due to the coiled muscles in its long and flexible neck.It never attacks animals too large for it to eat in a few bites unless in self defense. It isn't a fighter, if its initial attack doesn't succeed, it will hide in its hole and shell and wait to try again.

Temperament: Snatchers are quite cowardly, often hiding at the slightest hint of danger. They only attack in the form of sneak attacks on prey.

Abilities: Lightning fast strikes, camouflage in mud

Panhandler
Image
Name: Panhandler
Quick Facts: Digs, absorbs metal and gems into its shell
Height: 1-2 feet
Width: 1-2 feet
Length: 2-4 feet
Weight: 20-40 pounds
Native to: Ol' Tuck's Run
Locations: Ol' Tuck's Run
Resources: Small amounts of native metals and gems from the shell

Appearance: Panhandler Tortoises are the most flashy of those that inhabit Ol' Tuck's run, coming in many varied colors. Their skin and shells absorb metal, gems, and other minerals from the soil they dig through, adding to their appearance. While most of them are covered in the very common Quartz and copper, more rarely can ones of silver and other local gems be found. They are fairly small, with sharp, digging claws. They have tiny eyes due to their underground natures.

Habitat: Underground around Ol' Tuck's run. Panhandlers are almost always exclusively found underground. They can burrow through the most rocky of soils, and if given enough time, can dig through boulders. They are almost never found in the actual waters of Ol' Tuck's run, preferring the safety of ground.

Lifespan and Development: Panhandlers live for about 30 arcs. Their eggs are lain underground in spring, and spend an entire arc growing until they hatch. The babies spend two years in a burrow before venturing out on their own as adults.

Diet: Panhandlers are omnivorous, eating warms, roots, and other subterranean plants and insects. They absorb other nutrients, minerals, even water through their skin to add to their diet. Some theorize they can eat literally anything, and just prefer that which is underground.

Temperament: Panhandlers are very docile and very curious creatures. Often the only time they ever appear above ground is to investigate something disturbing the soil or ground and they are investigating. If captured, they can be relocated to patches of ground that one might want tilled. Many a farmer's child is sent to try and find them before planting season Captured panhandlers rarely stick around for long, tending to go back toward Ol' Tuck's Run. If found as eggs, they will treat their owner as mother, always tilling the ground near the mother's "den", and not leaving during their lifetime.

Abilities: Digging, collecting metals and gems randomly.

Treetles
Image
Name: Treetle
Quick Facts: Sharp claws, can climb trees, spreads moss
Height: .5-1 ft
Width: .5-1 ft
Length: 1-2 ft
Weight: 10-20 lbs
Native to: Ol' Tuck's Run
Locations: Ol' Tuck's Run
Resources: Sharp, hooked claws. Moss "seeds"

Appearance: Treetles are small, their skin like soil, though this is rarely seen. They are covered in a layer of moss at nearly all times from birth til death. They are actually tortoises and not turtles so they have the larger, humped shells instead of streamlined for water. They also have very large, sharp, hooked claws for climbing trees.

Habitat: Treetles are always found in and around trees. While they do prefer living trees, they can also be found within fallen trees, logs, and other wood sources, including firewood piles and structures near Ol' Tuck's Run.

Lifespan and Development: Treetles tend to live 10 arcs. Their eggs are laid in large patches of moss in the summer, and are hatched in fall. By the following Spring they are able to mate and are fully grown.

Diet: Treetles are omnivorous. Despite what many think, they never eat moss. Rather they eat bark, leaves, bird eggs, baby birds, insects, fruits, and nuts. Really anything they can associated with their tree habitats. They are very slow creature so catching other animals is rare, but if they did, they'd eat them too.

Temperament: Treetles are fairly docile, similar to squirrels in their temperament, albeit in a slower manner. They'd rather hide or flee from predators than fight. And due to the protection of their shells, don't fear jumping out of trees to avoid danger.

Abilities: Treetles are strong, slow climbers. They also greatly spread the growth of the moss they were born in. This moss grows upon their body, and every time a treetle poos, they spawn more of this moss. As such, when one finds moss covered trees around Ol' Tuck's Run, there are treetles nearby.

[Scalvoris] Fauna

Fat Bob
Image
Name: Fat Bob
Quick Facts: Lots of tasty meat. Lots. Male companion to Old Bettys
Height: 3-5 ft
Width: 3-5 ft
Length: 6-10 ft
Weight: 500+ lbs
Native to: Ol' Tuck's Run
Locations: Ol' Tuck's Run
Resources: Tasty, fatty, marbled meat

Appearance: Fat Bobs appear to be a large tortoise that is in a shell 3 sizes too small. They are very fat and have lots of meat upon their bones. They come in all shades of greens, browns, greys, and blacks, their skin being darker than their shells. Only the males of this species are called Fat Bobs. The females are Old Bettys.

Habitat: As a tortoise, Fat Bobs live on the banks of Ol' Tuck's Run. They are known to roam all around the lands, the second most traveled of the local turtles and tortoises after the Tiny Tucks. If there are plants around, odds are, a Fat Bob will eventually show up. They are the occasional sight to farms as well.

Lifespan and Development: Fat Bobs are quite long living, up to 80-90 arcs or so. They continue to grow bigger, fatter with age. They mate with Old Bettys after about 20 arcs of age. It takes about a half arc for the eggs to hatch, and another 3 arcs to reach full maturity.

Diet: Anything plant based. Fat Bobs truly can and will eat all plants. Their particular metabolic systems allow them to extract the most nutrients from what the eat, which is what allows them to grow so unusually fat.

Temperament: Fat Bobs are extremely docile. If attacked, they disappear into their shells. They are not particularly curious unless its toward a new source of food. They don't fear people, and typically don't protest if moved, which can be done with great difficulty. This has led to them being one of the easiest creatures for hunters to kill being able to walk right up to them.

Abilities: Long life span, able to eat all plantlife.

[Scalvoris] Fauna

Old Betty
Image
Name: Old Betty
Quick Facts: Great pets, soft and cuddly, lay a ton of eggs, long life, female counterpart to Fat Bobs
Height: 1.5-3 ft
Width: 1.5-3 ft
Length: 3-5 ft
Weight: 200-300 lbs lbs
Native to: Ol' Tuck's Run
Locations: Ol' Tuck's Run
Resources: Large, delicious eggs

Appearance: Old Bettys appear to be the "granny" of tortoises. They are always a shade of grey, and due to their softer nature, are incredibly wrinkly. They are about half the size of Fat Bobs, their male counterparts. Their shells are not hard, but rather a soft, cool leathery feel. Every part of them to the touch is soft.

Habitat: Old Bettys can be found in a wide range around Ol' Tuck's Run, with large concentrations near to where people live. They connect well with people, and actively seek them out. As a tortoise, they don't live in water, so they are always found on land with suitable vegetation.

Lifespan and Development: Old Betty's can live for up to 50 arcs when unbound to a person. However, if they pair with a person, they will live for as long as that person does. Once their partner dies, they die too, even if its before their normal lifespan. Because of this, parents often give them to children as pets at a young age, to have a life long companion. They can mate after 10 arcs of age. It takes about a half arc for the eggs to hatch, and another arc to reach full maturity. Old Betty's also lay eggs once ever 2 tenday, typically 20 or so at a time.

Diet: Any form of vegetation, but seem to particularly enjoy fruits and vegetables, especially if hand fed by their partner.

Temperament: Old Bettys are incredibly docile and curious of people, and will actively seek them out for companionship. They love small children, and don't mind being played with, cuddled with, or even used as pillows. They even seem to enjoy being decorated and dressed up as small children are often want to do.

Abilities: Long lifespan when paired with a person. Lay a lot of eggs.

Native to: Ol' Tuck's Run
Locations: Ol' Tuck's Run
Resources: Feathers that are stronger and more durable than those of standard birds. Ideal for quills, arrows, darts, etc.

[Scalvoris] Fauna

Sous Sniffer
Image
Name: Sous Sniffer
Quick Facts: Strong sense of smell, tameable, often used for gathering specific ingredients
Height: 1.5-3 ft
Width: 1.5-3 ft
Length: 3-5 ft
Weight: 200-300 lbs lbs
Native to: Ol' Tuck's Run
Locations: Ol' Tuck's Run
Resources: None* but are often used to track down particular plants and fungi.

Appearance: Sous Sniffers are a strange looking tortoise. They have an odd nose that appears quite similar to the snout of a pig, and look more like a slug in a turtle shell than an actual tortoise. Their skin is sticky and moist and leaves a trail. They lack limbs, and some have called them Turtle Snails.

Habitat: Sous Sniffers can be found all around the river they call home, as well as the surrounding forest. They prefer shade and night time, for the sun is harsh on their skin.

Lifespan and Development: Sous Sniffers live for about 5 years. They lay mate and lay eggs many times a year, which hatch in a single tenday. They reach maturity within a quarter arc.

Diet: Sous Sniffers are herbivores with a particular pentient for pungent herbs, spices, mushrooms, and roots.

Temperament: Sous Sniffers are fairy docile, preferring the safety of their shell to fighting or fleeing. They are smart enough to be tamed and kept as a pet, and are often used by grocers and chefs to track down specific ingredients. They are also very sociable amongst their kind and usually kept in pairs. A depressed Sous Sniffer often will look for a friend rather than the ingredients their owners seek.

Abilities: Sous Sniffers have incredibly strong senses of smell. When fed a specific plant based item, a sous sniffer can track down more of it. More experienced animal trainers can train them to be able to remember the scent on command, once they've eaten it at least once before.

[Scalvoris] Fauna

Thwarthide
Image
Developed by Tio Silver
Details: The Thwarthide, though not a prevalent species, is still a common enough creature to find around Scalvoris that a lot of research has been focused on better understanding them; mainly for the sake of finding easier ways to kill them. Sharing a common ancestor with Thwarthogs, the Thwarthide is another species of boar which has developed a heightened level of intelligence, though unlike it's cunning cousin this brain development has occured in the area of the brain that deals with using tools and social cognition rather than logical thinking and planning, which combined with their meaty hands and ability to stand on two legs allow these creature to live in rudimentary tribes, which can be found scattered all over the wilds of Scalvoris and densely populated in the land surrounding the Scalvoris Mountains.

Although from a purely scientific standpoint the Thwarthide is a very intelligent animal, they have (perhaps rather unfairly) earned a reputation for being immensely dense and brutish, so much so that their names are often invoked as an insult by the residents of Scalvoris. While these creatures do have the intelligence to cobble together basic tools from stone and wood, such as clubs or wigwams, they are still at their cores just animals lacking in complex emotion or the ability to reason, and as such judging the by the same standards of civilization as the races is rather arbitrary. The smartest Thwarthide's are clever enough to create fire, and because of this are normally able to usurp the position of head of their tribes, but are never able to figure out how to properly use them to cook food or work metal.

Because they're still the same size as an average boar and thus seem short and stunted to a human they are often considered pretty weak, and admittedly are in a 1-on-1 fight. But fighting together as a tribe these seemingly comical creatures are surprisingly coordinated, and their ferocity and endurance can soon overwhelm an unwary traveller. The largest ever recorded Thwarthide tribe numbered at just under 50, however there is no reason why more could not be united together under a strong enough leader.

Lifespan and Development: The average Thwarthide reached maturity at 8 years old and lives for 30 years. They could theoretically live into their early 40's, however the vast majority of elderly Thwarthides are killed by younger Thwarthides that've just reached maturity as a way of proving their strength.

Diet: Omnivorous, and more than happy to eat any animal that moves, other Thwarthides included.

Temperament: Highly aggressive to every creature not in their tribe. Tribal leaders are also aggressive to other Thwarthides in their tribe that could challenge their position. They tend to be a little more passive towards Thwarthogs, though the two species share no special relationship.

Abilities: Can create and use basic tools. Sturdy constitutions. Decent at teamwork.

Weaknesses:Very easy to trick or remain hidden from. Easily provoked into fighting other tribes.

[Scalvoris] Fauna

Emperor Bat
Image
Developed by Tio Silver
Habitat: Dark caves all across Scalvoris. Since these creatures are nocturnal they are usually only seen at night.
Lifespan and Development: These creatures are considered mature when they reach the age of 3, the year most of their species learn to fly, and have an average lifespan of 25 years.
Diet: While technically carnivorous, it is rare to see an emperor bat feed on anything but blood and the occasional bit of carrion.
Temperament: Highly territorial and aggressive when hunting in a flock, however cowardly when alone.
Abilities: Emperor bats have the rare and rather sinister, but undeniably powerful ability of high-speed regeneration. They can regrow an entire wing or any other smaller part of their body (besides the brain) in about five breaks, although the process seems to be excruciatingly painful. However this regeneration ability is fueled by large amounts blood, and thus can only be activated once the Emperor Bat feeds on the blood of another creature. They are also afraid of fire, as burn wounds are the only kind they cannot seem to recover from.

Alchemists have sought a way to harness their regeneration ability into potions for many arcs, however so far none have been successful at passing on this ability without the hunger for blood to fuel it. If a person drinks a regeneration potion made from an Emperor Bat, called an Utarefson elixir, they will fall into a state of uncontrollable bloodlust that makes them into little more than a feral animal. If they are still unable to devour blood after spending some time in this state the effect will turn on them and slowly start to eat at the hosts blood to power itself, which depending on the amount of potion taken could kill them.

Their blood requires Expert level alchemy to extract its properties for potions.
