Watery Graves

40th of Ymiden 719

The city was just beginning to stir as the sun began to break over the horizon. The heat had finally made its way to Scalvoris. Now there seemed to be no kind of relief from it. The strange ether storms that had ripped through at the start of the season and even just the day before had not helped anything. From what people were able to guess that was one of the reasons that the weather was acting so strange. There had only been one storm so far for the season.

Boots thumped against the wooden docks as the harbor master was the first to be up and moving. The silence of the morning helped to calm his nerves while listening to the ocean that lay beyond the city borders. He was an old man that had little patience for those that did not know what they were doing when it came to ships. There was always someone looking around for him during the middle of day and in late afternoon. The man waved to a familiar fisher as he paddled out into the open water to start his day. For a fisherman a golden time to catch in peace was before larger ships departed port or ships came in.

An unseasonal fog had begun to roll over parts of the harbor bay. It made the young fisherman nervous as he slowly let the boat drift into place. Splashing in the distance caused him to jerk around several times before seeing what looked to be a hand. Moving quickly, he nearly fell over into the water from how much the boat rocked around due to the rapid movements. Sitting down, the man rowed over to where the arm was sticking out of the water. He grabbed it and began to pull as hard as he physically could. A loud scream left his body as the arm jerked him below the water leaving only the boat on the water’s surface.

Waves rolled towards the docks for a long while after the attack took place. The small boat slowly began to float back to its home barren of fish or its owner. The only things found inside was a rod, a bucket, and food the man had brought. The old harbor master looked out at the open water expecting to see his acquaintance splashing in fear. Yet there was nothing to meet his gaze but the water as it went back to its calm nature. Sighing, he simply tied to boat up for the man to retrieve it upon his return. It took several breaks before another small boat left to the open waters only to return empty once more. When the third small boat returned, the harbor master has enough and called for the guards.

“I do not know exactly what is going on here. But I know these three fishermen are no strangers to these waters. It has not even reached midday and three people have disappeared. Nothing has been heard of splashing from here on the docks, nothing is missing from their boats, and there is no damage to the vessels,” the old man pointed out.

It took only moments for the guards to agree that an investigation would be needed. Two members offered to take a few civilians out to check where the boats had returned from. With permission the two wrote fliers about needing help at the docks and to be there by midday with the flier on hand. Racing off the two young men were excited about getting to run a mission even a simple one on their own. Once the fliers were in place with in several bars and taverns, the two returned to the docks and waited.

It was hot.

That was to be expected of the with the coming season change, Korva actually didn't mind the heat as if gave her more excuses to swim and the water stayed comfortable under the baking suns. But lately she'd found it hard to stay underwater long without seeing the faintest bits of pink at the edge of her vision. Phantom colors that she pretended didn't exist just like she pretended the candle didn't exist or the boy that wouldn't leave her ship. The Biqaj let herself sink farther into the water, her worries being soothed by the embrace of ocean around her. Only when the need for air became a problem did she finally move upwards. The woman barely managed to skin the surface of the water when hands in her hair ripped her from U'freks grasp. Korva's shriek of surprise and pain did nothing to deter the hands that hauled her on board with all the gentleness of a drunken squid.

"Chirens saggy tits!" She gasped, salt water burning her lungs almost more than her scalp burned, "What was that for?!"

"Yer not to go in the water."

"Ma--"

"I'm being serious. Lookat here."
Rubbing her eyes to clear the salt water haze the Biqaj could make out something written but shrugged slightly after. They'd written it in Common, wasn't her fault she couldn't make heads or tails of it. Her ma knew better than to try and make her read to figure things out. "One day yer gonna need to learn, ya little sea urchin!"

"Ow! Ma!"

"People are drowning."
Ashan piped up gleefully, looking far too smug about Korva getting smacked for the umpteenth time in the last few trials. If she didn't get the girl gone from the rest of her family soon, she'd pick up their bad habits but seeing her smile made Korvas lips quirk up until the words finally registered.

"Whatsit gotta do with us? The ain't know how to swim?"

"Has nothing to do with that, Kor, they're getting dragged."

"Mer or maybe a drowner?"

As her family speculated the image of a Mer she'd rather not recall drifted through her mind, her hand touching her wooden finger idly before she glanced at the water. If Mer or something else was picking people off it wasn't safe to go sailing. Who knew how far it went, which also meant the Biqaj couldn't go hunting her wayward son. Turning back to make sure her daughter was wrapped up in the chatter, Korva slipped away. They were used to her being quiet and watching, take them a few minutes to realize she'd gone. Ashan would give her an earful but she needed to know what was going on.

There was a few other sailors near the docks, and the useless Scalvoris guards. She still never thought much of the useless lot and judging by the plea for help from non-guards her opinion hadn't gone up much. What good was a guard if they couldn't do anything? Not for the kids of Scalvoris and certainly not for the sailors. She doubted half of them even knew how to swim.

If she hadn't needed anything other than her finger and a quick prayer to U'frek along with some sharp mutters of how he needed to pay better attention to his waters, she was fresh out of luck. As it was the Biqaj had only her shirt and pants, and no shoes. Plodding along to the guards and still wet from her own swim just before. Between the fog and the general attitude of the people in the area it seemed like this was going to be something far worse than some fools catching the wrong current.

"Whatcha got going on? S'drowners acting up?" There was something hopeful in her voice, though her eyes glittered with something like resignation. Nothing was ever so simple in the city and when she was able to leave with Ashan in tow they'd be better off. Her gaze was on the water though, not the people. If she say that Mer she'd drag her up for answers or maybe just walk back the other way because nothing was worth that much trouble again. Certainly not some poor louts that weren't her own.
