A Fish In Hand

It was too dark.

At least, that was her excuse. They couldn't expect her to be able to fish good fish with if she'd couldn't see where she was sailing or see what she was trying to catch. Not that she cared about either but it was how she justified the lazy, perfunctory sweep of her net as she laid on the dock near her ship. No sensible fish would be this close to the surface and when it was this cold pickings were slim regardless. At least the season was soon to be over then she'd head back to Scalvoris proper.

"What are you doing?"

"Talking to the fish."
The Biqaj replied without missing a beat as Ashan jumped off the ship with a quiet curse that made her smile. She would sound like a BIqaj by the time Korva was done with her or she'd have to quite being a mom while she was ahead, ""Ya never done it 'fore?"

"Maybe if there was fish I would."

"Oi! There's fish, ya can't see 'em but ya can hear 'em."

"All I hear is you being an idiot. Fish can't talk."

"Maybe,"
Korva said slyly as she eyed the girl and held up one end of the net, "Or maybe they ain't like talking to rude kids. But we ain't gonna know whose right 'less we catch 'em."

Ashan looked excited at the prospect of proving Korva wrong, any adult really, and the older woman never minded so long as the girl stayed happy. And even when she was wrong the girl didn't seem to have any trouble taking in this new information with just as much attitude as if she hadn't been wrong. Reminded her of her sisters and made her wince to think of what her ma would say but her ma wasn't here now so it didn't matter.

As her girl took a side of the net they dragged it through together, the younger of the two hissing in discomfort at the chill of the water before she pipped up again, "We won't catch anything from here will we?"

"'Fore ya came I was telling 'em we got treats up here."

"You realize I'm not five, right?"

"Aye, five 'as more manners."

Even in the dark her flush was visible and Korva grinned to show it was only teasing before returning her attention to the water. It was silence for a bit as the two scooted closer to soak up each others warmth and just enjoy the companionship of the moonlit day. The places were it struck even danced on the water, making it look like there were tiny, silver fishes skimming across the top. Both the Biqaj and the girl were so engrossed in their not-fishing neither expected the fish that did flop into the net and rip from Ashans fingers with ease while reflex made Korva's fingers tighten.

"A fish!"

"Grab yer en--"
she didn't both to finish as the flopping made the net twist wildly, winding around the fish and around the womans' fingers, "--the fish, grab 'er!"

Even as she yelped at Ashan the Biqaj attempted to pull in the rest of the net while the fish tried to slide out of every part she pulled up. She was almost tempted to let the damned thing go but to do so would've lost her net with how wrapped around the fishes nose her net was. Again and again it flopped as Ashan made grabby hands, squealing every time it moved or the water splashed her. "Watch it's nose!"

"It's going to stab me!"

"'ere, take the net and 'old 'er tight."
Korva said, already unwrapping the net from her own hands to wrap around Ashans who protested only because of how much closer the fish got to her, "Just stay still, I ain't let it stab ya."

"Easy for you to say!"

Ignoring the girls plaintive retort Korva glared at the struggling fish, "Ain't gotta be looking at me like that, I ain't the one that got ya stuck! U'frek damn ya, stop moving!"

But the young Shimfin did no such thing, if anything the sound of her voice making it wiggle hard, so tangled up now it was hard to tell fish from net. Even if she dropped the net now the poor thing would die wrapped up in net. The Biqaj wasn't like Kes and knew how delicious the fish could be but it was too small to be of worth and even she'd feel guilty letting the little idiot wither away in the net. So still she tried, the slippery creature sliding out of her hands like it was made of pure water itself until the net slipped out of an apologizing Ashans hand and the tip of a Shimfin nose went straight through the side of Korva's foot and into the deck. Both humans and fish shrieking in protest.

At least with the nose stuck Korva could hug the fish to her so it stopped flailing enough for her to hug it to her body before it sawed right through her foot. Ashan too flailed a bit before her face turned a little green in the moonlit. The Biqaj narrowed her eyes and gasped out roughly, "Ya throw up on my foot and yer grounded."

"I.."
she swallowed heavily, "I won't. We have to--that's so gross--get it out!"

"Aye."
The Biqaj panted, tempted now to just let the fish die then pull it out but U'frek would probably frown at her, "Stupid fish, listen and stay still, ya hear?"

Whether it was staying still because it was dying or because it understood her, Korva didn't know or care, she just wanted it out. And there were few options as the angle was too weird to pull it out herself and there didn't seem to be anyone nearby that would hear her shout and she wasn't about to send Ashan off on her own. All this for a fish, she thought with an internal groan, blaming Kes for her sudden feelings about baby animals. "Hold 'em for me Ashan, Imma see how bad." Offhandedly and to take the girls mind on the slicking deck she added, "And see 'e listened when I told 'im."

"You!--"
If she was going to protest Korvas jokes she shook her head instead, "okay."

Determined but still green the girl wrapped her own arms around the fish to keep it upright while Korva squatted down to see how bad the damage was. It looked like it had caught the fat of her outer foot, two inches to the right and it would've missed her entirely. But the saw was point the right way. Before she could talk herself out of it the woman ripped her foot to the side with a curse that was loud would be loud enough to call help if there was any nearby. But as it stood there was no sound of running footsteps and Ashan fell forward onto the fish with a yelp when Korva's leg was no longer bracing it.

"What did you do?!"

"Quit yapping and start unwrapping!"
Korva snapped out, trying to ignore the pain in her foot as Ashan responded to the tone of voice automatically and the Biqaj shoved her foot in the water to numb it. It seemed that it was in bad shape because the girl was done far too soon prompting the Biqaj to stand and help rip it out of the deck. "Pull harde--"

But there was no chance to finish the words as all three tumbled off deck and into the frigid water as soon as it slipped free.

Screw the fish.

U'frek could save the fish, Korva just wanted out of the damned water and to get Ashan out of the water too. She didn't even know if the girl could swim! And opening her eyes under water to search for her did nothing to help, the water was too dark and the moons too weak to penetrate it's inky depths. She tried to turn to look and a fin smacked her in the face, a swirl of bubbles pushing towards her in it's wake and making whatever visibility she had disappear. Chest tight from nerves and the cold the Biqaj shot to the surface, "Ashan!"

"Don't shout,"
She spun around to face the deck and the girl was clinging to the side and looking like a very angry wet cat, "What were you doing down there?!"

"...saying bye."
Korva chatter then paddled toward her girl to help push her up and over the side then struggled to haul herself over.

"S-saying bye?! Gods you have a death wish."

"Ain't g-gotta be rude, now get yer ass up. We gotta start a fire."

Huffing and puffing both practically crawled back onto the ship, Korva leaking silver blood the whole way, and wrapped themselves up as tightly as possible with Ashan vowing to never help fish that close to a net again.

Comments

Sorry about the late review.

Another thrilling domestic adventure with Korva and her adopted daughter. The way you play them together feels so natural and flows well through the narrative. It's not easy making something as mundane as a fishing trip into an entertaining story, but Korva always seems to manage with a good amount of suspense. Getting that poor fish stuck in her foot! Ouch!
