The walking corpse of a man clutched at Hookor, slumping over him as Sephira watched warily...unable to understand exactly what was happening until it was already too late. The slave spoke, his speech was stuttering and a little garbled, likely from whatever had been done to him and the content of his words shook the mage to the core. An expression of pure horror flew across her features as the slave relayed his instructions and the fact that Hookor had just been poisoned.

“No!” The soldier screamed, her face going ashen with dread. Her voice echoed ineffectually across the frozen landscape, she was too late and one of her team members was now facing what was likely mortal danger.

The slave had been sent to stall them, so whoever had done this...whoever had brought those black ships had known that Sephira and her team would be coming.

This was a trap and they had walked right into it.

She reacted mostly out of instinct, ether flowing into her Rupturing and Attunement Spark to prepare for whatever came next. The tattoos the mage had gained last season glowed brightly under her clothing, and her witchmark was radiant with crimson light in her irises.
It was then that out of the corner of her eye Sephira turned to her fellow element Rey’na and followed her gaze. Out on the ice, not far from their current position the newly anointed Toraj stood as if entranced by a dark featured woman standing before him. Behind the woman there were at least five figures that were very clearly armed with bows and arrows.

The hair on the back of Sephira’s neck stood on end and time seemed to slow down around her. Almost sounding muffled she could distantly hear Hooker’s voice as he cried out for a tourniquet. Things had gone so wrong so quickly. They were so very vulnerable, two of their number were essentially incapacitated, but she, Rey’na and Rynata remained. It was six against three, those were not the best odds; But Sephira Blackwood had been far more outnumbered before.

Ether sang into her grasp like a spinning ribbon of pure silk, setting her senses alight with its embrace.

She needed to give her team time to recover...time enough to make a stand against their enemies. Taking a deep breath she neglected the urge to draw her saber and instead continued to pull on tangled tendrils of ether, snaking them into her Rupturing Spark as she choose a location just to the right of the group of archers, the woman and Toraj. If the lad was caught up in her spell, then that was a risk she was willing to take. There was a shattering boom as a crimson and starlight flecked portal was ripped open in the place she had chosen. The sorceress reached forward, physically with her hands; requiring the hand motions in order to enact what came next. Sephira had only done this one other time and it had been in practice, hopefully this time the effect would be far stronger now that that there was a true need.

The ether around a portal was not static and could be manipulated by a Rupturer, and so Sephira began to yank on the etheric fabric of space around the portal to enact a Pull. While she did so she moved through the motions with her hands of pulling on some invisible rope.

A Rupturing Pull would cause a gravitational effect across the area in front of the mouth of the portal that would pull anyone in that space toward the portal. Hopefully the magic would be strong enough to take the attackers right off their feet and buy her team the time they needed. The output or Egress portal was situated just behind the group of archers, and situated ten or so feet off the ground. It was doubtful, but if somehow she mustered the strength to pull anyone through, then they would be faced with a rather disorienting, but non-fatal fall.

Screams immediately filled the area, of panic and fear. Sephira cried out, Hookor called for a tourniquet, and all in all, it was chaos. Yet her eyes immediately fell to the scratch, and from the faint words she heard and the reactions she knew what was going on. Poison, probably via bloodstream if she knew anything about it. Rey had used a fair few, and the ones that affected your blood were often the hardest to pull off secretly and yet the most dangerous to most, aside from perhaps one she had made a man forcibly ingest.
Her eyes widened as she took the situation in. All of it filled her with terror, and anger, and a burning memory that wouldn't stop until the girl was in flames. Her breathing paused for a trill, before speeding up. Thoughts kept running through her head of the past she had, the things she had done. Even when she decided it wouldn't break her she felt herself cracking. She focused on the burning inside of her, turning it all to anger as she readied herself - then she saw them.

Rey glanced to them immediately, noticing the group that was coming forwards towards Toraj, a woman with of armed men and women. Five bows and arrows, with that woman as her leader. Normally, in those odds, there was nothing that could be done. But Rey'na knew that this was different, this time at least. She couldn't let alleged odds define what would happen today. For the people around her, firstly, but for her Immortals too. Pier and Pre were the Immortals of judgment, and this woman was clearly behind at least some of what had been going on here, judging from her twisted expression. Which meant she had signed herself up as a target to be judged. Her punishment was already clear.

Death.

Without any hesitation the rage took over, Rey drawing her spear and rushing. It wasn't a difficult decision to make for her with the fit of rage that had taken her over. Thoughts ran through her head as she rushed, asking herself why. Why risk her life for other peoples? But she remembered. Valtharn was attacking them, putting her and Fridgar at risk, and Rey'na had a plan there and then. She rushed the Mortalborn of Savagery in the hope of being struck down, and while she was keeping them busy fighting to the death her friends had a chance. To fight, to run - it didn't matter.

What mattered was they escaped alive, even if it put her at risk. [/color]

When he found the tracks, he was initially confused. The number, somehow, didn't make sense to him. Something wasn't right about them, but there wasn't any time to consider what that meant. He hurried his steps and continued to pursue, because these tracks were fresh enough that their quarry couldn't be very far away. The shouts of alarm behind him as the scene developed didn't seem to catch his attention quite as well as they probably should've, in part because he couldn't understand what was being said and was far enough away that it didn't matter. His focus was on his objective, to the exclusion of all else, and the objective was coming closer and closer by the moment. They couldn't be far.
It was more than he'd expected to find. Much more. And once the realization hit him of exactly what it was he'd found, it was far too late for him to turn back as he found himself face to face with someone he recognized. He didn't know why or from when, but the familiarity was enough to strike him completely numb and dead in his advance. The presence of others around her didn't seem to register in his mind at all, because the moment that she spoke to him, he seized up and his eyes shot open wide with short-lived but no less profound terror. Something deep inside cried out in alarm to caution him against what was about to happen, but there was nothing he could do. He felt it grip onto him and the helpnessness sank its claws deep into his soul before it was all scrubbed by the magic that effectively blew everything away.

Once it had, all he could see was her. Everything else vanished.

Images flashed through his mind of the bodies he'd seen as they had walked here. They were hers. And how magnificent they'd been. With the desire taking over, he felt his body moving on its own as it rehearsed some motions he was logically unfamiliar with---he dropped on his knees on the ice and touched his forehead just shy of her feet, all the while rambling quietly in Grovokian; "Mistress, this one lives to please. What must it do to please? Please, mistress!" As he spoke, his hands had started to search through his clothes to start... undressing?

How could she carve her desires into his flesh unless he exposed it, after all?

"What? No..." Rynata felt a creeping sense of realization at the slave's strange words and understood mere moments after Hookor did, that they were in trouble. Sure enough, looking toward the young doctor revealed that he looked a bit feverish even in the icy wind. Even as she watched, he teetered and slipped onto the ground.

Grabbing her companion, Rynata did her best to drag him away from the maimed slave. The poor man needed help, but they were in no position to give it so long as he was turned against them. As much as it was difficult, the priorities were clear. Still, what sort of poison was this? Was it deadly? They were not properly equipped for the delicate procedures that might be necessary to save someone from fatal toxins. To make matters worse, their only doctor had gone down.

Getting as safe a distance from the slave as Hookor's weight and the sense of urgency would allow, Rynata lent a ear to the doctor's call for a tourniquet. She'd never done this before, but if the poison had entered through the scratches in his arm, then it was probably best that they slow the circulation of blood until some antidote could be thought up. Whether they could actually get their hands on such a thing was a concern pushed to the back of her mind. She had a belt that could do the job of cinching one arm, and so she whipped it off her waist. In a moment's flare of gallows humor, she wondered why she was losing so much clothing in the space of about a few trills. Rynata prepared to continue performing first aid, but hesitated as she sensed Sephira and Rey'na tense up nearby.
Looking towards the direction they were fixated, a cold chill ran down the sailor's spine, having nothing to do with the actual temperature of the place. There were enemies on the horizon with weapons at the ready. Yet they were so very unprepared to face them. Rynata spotted Toraj's lone figure up ahead of them and her heart clenched as she realized there was nothing she could do for him. They were too far away, and she'd have no more luck than getting shot down if she tried to approach them. What she could do was finish doing what she could for Hookor who was right beside her. The two Elements had told her that they would take care of combat, and now seemed like an opportune moment to put her trust in them.

"Get down," she said urgently to the doctor as she looped the belt around his arm above the scratches. Hopefully those archers had beautifully horrendous aim. As this thought crossed her mind, there was a loud boom, and Rynata thought the volcano must have started up again. Tugging the makeshift tourniquet tight, she prepared to either run or join the fight.

She is frequently kind and she's suddenly cruel
She can do as she pleases, she's nobody's fool
But she can't be convicted, she's earned her degree
And the most she will do is throw shadows at you
But she's always a woman to me

Raven was happy.

This beautiful little pet had come to her and she felt a surge of love and affection for him. "Oh, you beautiful pet. Look at you, here for Raven." she purred and she spoke to him in the language he spoke to her. "That's good, pet. You be good for Raven. Oh, yes." She looked down at him and watched in delight as he shed his clothing.

Her eyes glinted sharper than the knife in her hand at the sight of him, naked and trembling and Raven pulled him up by his hair then pulled him in to kiss him. "I'm going to teach you, you beautiful pet. How to pleasure me in every way... lets start.." her hand guided his and she let out a low moan. "just there."

And so, with a firm hand and a sharp knife, Raven began to train her newest pet.....

82nd Ymiden, 718

Hookor's fate might have been sealed the very trill that the blind slave's nails scratched him but for the actions he and his companions took that trial. He had no awareness of any poison which acted this quickly, it was incredibly speedy in it's action. Maybe, if he lived, he could try and find out what it was. But right now, living was more important, there was no doubt. As the burning and freezing moved over him, Hookor knew that he had very limited time.

Very limited time indeed.
Rynata moved to help Hookor, putting a makeshift tourniquet in place. If they lived through this and he got the chance to look back at what had happened this trial dispassionately and with a clear head, Hookor would know that, in this moment, Rynata saved his life. No ifs, no buts. She saved him.

What that meant, though, as Hookor stumbled against her and he felt the world swimming around him, was that there were two of them unable to act in this moment. Hookor from the poisoning and Rynata from the helping. The people with bows did not care.
There was a deafening boom and then, for some reason which none save the group leader could explain, the archers stumbled and fell. Not the woman, though. The woman that they all saw. The woman who was currently cutting slowly into Eren'ir whilst guiding his hand under her clothes to please her. She didn't move. She didn't budge. She just looked at them and she smiled a soft smile. She held their companion in her arms, after all, and she didn't think that they would harm him, or risk him being harmed. Plus she had her archers.

She was supremely confident.
It was the teamwork which made it work. Sephira effectively disabling the archers and then, as Rey'na ran with the spear, Raven's eyes widened in amazement. One of them was rushing her? Her? How could that be? How!? No matter, the fumbling slave with the promising hands was in front of her and her archers....

.... had not fired.

So caught up had Raven been in the pleasure of a new pet that Eren'ir had bought the time Sephira, Rey'na, Hookor and Rynata used. Shoving him aside with a snarl of fury, she turned her full attention to Rey'na, her emotional grip on Eren breaking even as the knife she'd been holding fell to the floor in front of him. The woman was fast and she was out of the way of Rey'na's spear with a simple (apparently) twist of her upper body.

But now? Now her people were in a state of disarray, she was in a state of half undress and confusion and there was a woman with a spear. Raven made a slicing motion across Rey'na's throat and in the very split second before she hit, Rey'na heard a very distinct "schnict" sound. As the woman's nails elongated and slice at Rey'na's throat, the young devotee of Pier and Pre had a choice.

Continue to strike and take advantage of Raven's movement to stab her exposed side, or get out of the way.

You are in a state of COMBAT. Same as last time, one move each.
Before: is freeform, up to you.
After: You have TWO actions. The following things count as actions:
- dropping a weapon
- drawing a weapon
- using a mark ability
- casting a spell.
HOOKOR: you have the same actions as the others. You are debilitated, not down and I will take that into account when determining whether you actions are successful or not.
You must write ONLY TWO actions. Things like thinking are free and you have as many words as you can fit in to 10 seconds of time.
You have one STROKE OF LUCK held over. I did not use it in this post, but you never know when you might need it!

The moments in front of him, just like the last few behind him, were slowed, and blurry. Hookor staggered, and fell into Rynata as she applied the tourniquet. The cold mixed with a stinging fire, as it continued to travel. Though he was too confused at the moment to know for sure, Crook thought that the tourniquet had slowed the venom, though it had not, in fact, been tightened yet. He looked up at Rynata, who was forced to hold him as he fell to her.

"You're pretty." he said with a smile, and spaced out eyes. Then she suddenly called for him to move, and she forced him to the ground. In his semiconscious state, Hookor tried to lift himself back up, rebelling ridiculously against her action which surely saved him.

Boooom!!! Another rumble of the mountain, and Hookor seemed to shake himself, just a little, out of the toxin induced madness. Rynata tightened the belt, which would normally have hurt, but was masked by the ever more painful iceburn of the poison in Hookor's arm.

"By the gods!"
he cussed in agony. There was the rumble of the volcano, and now the new sounds of combat. The rest of the group was attacking, but for Crook it was a battle to survive a far more subtle, but equally deadly enemy, that continued to travel up his arm...

------

A little more lucid at the moment, he nodded to Rynata in thanks, and then tried once more to get his dagger out of its sheath. This time, however, rather than trying to run into the fray, Hookor decided to stay behind cover, and began what must have seemed futile to those who saw...he began to scrape his scratch wound with his blade. Hopefully it would allow him to remove any excess poison...for what it was worth.

In concert with Rey’na’s attack , Sephira’s spell brought the archers to the ground. They had a few moments to take advantage of, perhaps ten trills or so before once again the odds would be against them.

Why was Toraj transfixed by that woman though? He seemed enraptured by her, even stripping down for her and letting her begin taking a blade to him. For a brief moment Sephira was transported back to the moment when Adam Michaels had been in her office, signing up for the Elements before attempting to poke and prod at her mind with his Empathic abilities. Thanks to her ridged sense of self control and her competency with Attunement she had been able to detect his activities and knock him clean out of his chair before any lasting damage was done. He had explained what he was, a mage that could toy with emotions and twist thoughts: an Empath. But this woman was on a whole other level than the young recruit had been. Sephira didn’t have the time to inspect their enemy’s Frequency to probe for a confirmation that she was indeed a mage but she would err on the side of caution and let her team know her suspicions. Especially Rey’na, who was now locked in combat with the enemy mage.

“Guard your minds!” Sephira commanded as she shot herself forward at a sprint toward the archers.

“The bitch is an Empath.” She hissed before wrenching Wyvern from its sheath and passing by Rey’na at speed. Her eyes sought out her comrade’s for only a split trill, but if their gazes connected then Sephira passed on a knowing glance. She knew Rey’na would guard her back while she dealt with the archers. If Rey’na could hold off the mage then she would keep any arrows from becoming lodged in her back.

Shards of ice and snow flew up around the Rupturer as she ran while tearing into her etheric reserves to access her Spark. Crimson light spilled once again from her irises and from the markings that spiraled across her torso and arms. The archers were still on the ground but they wouldn’t be for long. The Blink portal opened with a flick of her left hand that right in front of her with a shattering boom and delivered the mage to a space a few feet in the air above the nearest archer. She had momentum and gravity aiding her as she fell those few feet and Sephira took full advantage of that power. Snapping Wyvern downwards she aimed for the throat of the bow wielding slave with every intention of making the kill in a single strike. She now stood between the archers and her team, it was her job to keep them from being picked off while Hookor and Rynata recovered. Hopefully Toraj would come to his senses with the Empath distracted and make himself useful, rather than a liability.

From Hookor’s dazed expression and cloudy eyes, it was quite clear that the poison was making him delirious. Even without his entirely innocent ramblings about her appearance, Rynata was quite worried for him.

“Yes, yes,” she responded, with good humor and a voice slightly strained from the threat bearing down upon them. “Hopefully we’ll laugh about this later.”

Thankfully, the tourniquet’s application seemed to wring some sense back into the doctor. What was more, no arrows came singing through the air and no projectile found purchase on the two who were vulnerable on the ground. Turning toward the main fight, Rynata saw the archers somehow sprawled on the ground and Rey’na engaged viciously with an equally furious woman. Toraj, just off to the side of the woman seemed hurt but not down. Sephira’s warning rang clear over the fighting and reinvigorated Rynata’s alertness as much as she didn’t know exactly what an Empath was. From the dangerous way the word burst from their leader’s lips, it referred to some ability that didn’t bode well for them. Guarding the mind sounded like something that might be suggested in meditation.
“Watch out for stragglers!” Rynata cried, noting the dagger at Hookor’s side and leaving him with a warning of her own. Satisfied that she had done what she could for him, there were now more immediate threats. Already bolting after Sephira, Rynata drew her own short blade as she cleared the distance between her and one of the closer archers.

Ahead of her, Sephira blinked into existence above a prone archer and swept down onto them like some majestic bird of prey. Magic. Not even bothering to try and comprehend the complex mechanisms of such an attack except its usefulness, Rynata attacked another archer still struggling to get to their feet.

If she had been something more, she might have been able to spare everyone she fought. Yet Rynata was not something more. She was just a civilian with a basic weapon and someone who was determined to see the siege on Scalvoris lifted. As much as she didn’t want anyone to die, she wanted the death of her companions even less. If she didn’t steel herself and comprehend that people were counting on her, then other people, herself included, would die. Mercifully, the urgency of life threatening battle shielded her from too much reflection and spurred on her actions. Black blade sent jabbing out toward the archer’s neck like a thorn, she hoped at least, that it would be quick.

"But you will die here today. By Lisirra's name, I will have your head."

Words that had left the girls mouth when rushing the Mortalborn of Murder. Valtharn had threatened the girl, blocked attacks and stopped blows when faced with three enemies. Yet Rey'na, with nothing but a dagger in her hand, had charged anyway. She knew what would have happened to Fridgar if she hadn't, what would have happened to all of the people she loved. How disappointed Lisirra would have been, or so she thought. So she charged, not a second of doubt in her eyes. Even if it cost her life.

'I hope I made you proud...I love you.'

The last thought she had as her knife readied to stab. But now? Now was different. Now she wasn't fighting for an Immortal and a man she loved, now was not against a Mortalborn - as far as she knew. Now was different because now mattered more. Now she fought for all the Immortals that had saved her, all four of them. Now she had better gear and a weaker opponent. Now she fought for her friend, Sephira, who she had promised would be alright. For Rynata, Hookor and Toraj. But most importantly?

Now she fought for herself.

Her eyes met Sephira's as she knew what she had to do. One blade it all it would take, one well-placed spear through to a vital organ. If a small dagger could take out the foes she had fought before, a spear could do the same. Windsong hissed in the air as she kept the charge forward, even as the nails threatened to slice her throat open - and she had a choice. Live, but lose what might be her only change, or take what could be a fatal blow in exchange for a blow on the woman.

So as her rush went forward the girl thrust herself as far forward as she could, pointing the spear and aiming for the woman's sides, hoping to pierce the center of her torso and damage as many of her organs as she could. As she did, she let a small smirk spread across her face. She was not going to die afraid.

[Seasonal Event] Dark Hearts C: Ice, Ice, Baby

Image
It had become so cold again. Though he could think of little else than appeal to the pleasure of his mistress, the frost and chill bit into his naked flesh the moment he'd exposed it to her. He had knelt into the snow and ice and felt his knees and calves burning, his forehead nearly sticking itself to the ground for the beads of sweat that latched on between his skin and the ice he was pressed against, though Raven's intervention prevented this and he couldn't help the relief that surged through his body when she lifted him from the ground with strength befitting a magnificent creature like her---the kiss was hungry and greedy, his reciprocation weak and uncertain as he reeled from the unexpected gesture even as she started to guide his hand along her body until it cupped, and---His eyes widened and colour rushed to his cheeks, summoning uncanny heat from his depths in spite of the cold that threatened to freeze him solid so long as he stood still in her grasp. She started to carve into his flesh and he held still and quiet for her, fingers dancing still so long as it pleased her while she drew blood onto his fair, nearly unblemished skin.

With the intervention of the rest of the group, however, this ended all too quickly. Before he knew it, he was dropped on the ice and reality came crashing back against him to the sound of shattering glass as the knife clattered to the ground near him. His eyes were drawn to it immediately, where the gleaming blade, still coated in his blood, rested unattended at his feet. His mind cleared, and he realized what was happening. It made his gut churn with nausea and disgust, egged on by the pain from the cuts and the cold that continued to sink its teeth into him without mercy or abandon. He shivered uncontrollably against the cold as he reached for the knife.

It was secure in his hand before he understood what was going on. His body moved on its own as he pushed his naked form out of the snow and ice to give pursuit, forcing his tired and frozen legs to run across the ground with the knife held crampingly at his side. Raven was squarely in his field of view and he ran as fast as his legs would carry him, summoning what strength and endurance he had and could muster so that he woudn't fail, wouldn't fall, and he wouldn't lose any of his momentum or the hopeful moment of surprise. While Raven was still busy with Rey'na, the newly anointed Toraj barreled in from behind, throwing his entire weight against the woman in hopes of wrapping an arm around her and using his momentum to tackle her down into the ground or send her staggering with him hanging off of her to provide a heavier weight and distraction than he'd already done before. This time he wouldn't allow her the time to seize his mind.

To further assure himself of that, he turned the knife in his grasp and sought to plunge it into the back of the woman's neck. There were a lot of things he didn't know, but he did know this---one bleeds by the blade, and the neck is one place you didn't want to bleed from.
