Arc 720

"I bloody hate Cylus," Vega grumbled, grabbing her bow and making her way out to the practice field. "I mean, it might as well be th'middle o'the night an' all. An' it's the stupid fault o'my stupid sperm-makin' idiot." She refused ~ point blank ~ to call Faldrun her father. He wasn't. She knew who her father was and that was that. It wasn't flame-head mcnumpty, of that she was sure. So. Vega wandered over and she looked at the "practice area". Multicoloured eyes narrowed and she shook her head. "Well, that's jus' rubbish, innit?" she said, casually. "What're they?" The things she pointed to were, of course, the targets at the end of long ranges. Vega turned to Bill and she listened to his answer. "They're what you aim into in order to practice your bow." He said it like he meant it and Vega shook her head. "Right. 'cos people what yer shootin' at, they stand still an' remain far away. Handy that." Vega shook her head. "We're not trainin' if we're shootin' at standin-still targets. We're practicin' aim, not speed. Right. So. This is what we're gonna do." Vega looked at Bill and she smiled.

"One o'us is gonna grab that there target an' run t'ward the other. But, as we do, we're gonna try an' not get hurt," Bill looked at her and shook his head. "Do you have any idea how much that weighs, Vega?" She looked at him and nodded. "Yeah, I do. Enough to be difficult to carry, so it'll be good trainin' for the one carryin' it an' the one shootin'." Bill grimaced and nodded. He couldn't argue, it just sounded like she was being demanding. She was, of course. Vega knew it, didn't care, and would have done more if she could have gotten away with it.

"Right, then. So, you wanna shoot, or you wanna dodge bein' shot?" She asked and she snorted with laughter when he replied "I wand to persuade you to let me hit the target over there. But since not, I'll shoot, you dodge." Vega nodded. "That's a'right. This is fun! What're you whingin' about you great big dweeb?" She punched him, companionably, and he stumbled. "Stop bein' such a wussie. I'm on it." She made her way down the range, and then she hoisted the target in front of her.

"Alrigh', make sure yer usin' practice arrows, an' give it yer best shot!" Vega said and then, she roared her best battle cry before running. She ducked and dodged and weaved out of the way, turning sideways so he actually couldn't physically shoot the target. "How am I supposed to shoot it now?!" Bill asked and Vega let out a laugh. "Maybe it's not jus' me what has to move, you idjit!"

And, should anyone wish to join them, there were two of them practicing in a rather unorthodox manner. It seemed to be what Vega Lei'nox did best.

Kisaik was flying overhead, astride his Harpy Eagle mount, looking over the lands below. "Hmmm..." He didn't see much of interest going on, nobody needed saving, no dragons needing slaying. The Stormlands were ill-named on this dark Cylus day. He wrapped his Cavani cloak around his shoulders as they flew through the chilly air. They rounded about the field, alighting to the ground when he suddenly did hear something.

Having heard the sounds of laughter and combat, Kisaik sprung into action. Someone needing help! A knave attacking somebody with vile mirth! "Up and away, Knugget! We must save them!"

So they took to the air once more, this time Kisaik kept low to the ground as he flew, so as to better make out the figures in the distance, dancing in the waning dusk of early Cylus. There he saw a woman and a man, the woman with fiery red hair was wielding a sword, and dodging various missiles! The knave was using a bow against a woman armed only with a melee weapon! While all was fair in combat, he was obviously at an advantage, and thus Kisaik deemed him a dishonorable knave!

He flew into the ground, Knugget hopping against the ground as he landed. Once there, Kisaik slid off of Knugget's saddle, and began running for the man, drawing his shadow shiv from his shadow. The four-inch long blade was barely a splinter to one as large as the man, but it would smart, and probably put the fear of darkness in him!

Without warning, he opened a snapshot portal, and threw the sword into it. The blade made a screaming noise as it flew through the egress, and toward the man.

Kisaik shouted as loud as he could, "Don't worry Madam, Mädärä Kisaik Ciuruọrun sọ Kufuata Karo Kashe Däuä, Tìfmi Härumtä sọ anou Fairy Samuwar, ọbavi sọ tẹlẹ, igbaradi sọ anou tabi ọludïbọ will save you!"

Honestly, how hard could it be?

Kasoria almost winced aloud when the impossibly naive thought rumbled through his head. Optimism and positivity was one thing when about to embark on a new skill, but not with a fucking blindfold on. Swinging a sword wasn't "hard", unless you were a cripple. Being a swordsman was. And there was a talent that didn't involve any mathemetics or physics or any of the other such shite that he just knew would go into proper shooting.

The Raggedy Man sighed as he felt the brace of throwing knives clatter quietly against his chest. "Much rather be using youse", he whispered as he headed out the door from the common room. Warmth deserted him, but the pleasantly full feeling in his guts didn't. Traveling drew an appetite, after all. "But need somethin' wiv' a wee bit more-"

Then he saw a tiny green knight with a head made of a twig hurling a tiny sword at a grown man shooting arrows at a madly-laughing Vega... as she held one of the bow targets. After a moment or two, he grabbed a passing Knight, and jerked his chin towards the scene.

"You, ah... youse can see dat, right?

The armored figure frowned and looked at Kasoria like he was cracked. Which was pretty much what he was hoping against.

"Aye. Bow practice."

"That's how yeh practice here?"

"Yes!"

"... a'right."

Adaptability. It counted for a lot, Kasoria had come to learn.

He strode over to where the demented pageantry was occurring, and got a hold on the purpose as he walked. The woman - Fates, that fucking gash again - was trying to get the shooter - Bill? Aye, that's it - to shoot at moving targets. Kasoria thought that was a mixed blessing, considering where they were. If they were going to be atop the walls, the enemy only had one direction to move on: towards them. As long as they could maintain a decent rate of fire, preferably as a block like the archers he'd read about, that shower of arrows would be enough.

And after that? Once they're over the walls? What about in the field, if we get the chance? Or in the halls, or corridors, or underground? She's a bitch, but she's a bitch that knows what she's doing. Let's assume that, and shut up, hmm?

"Fair enough."

"Ow, shite!"

A sword the size of a hairpin smacked into Bill's chest and he batted it away like a bee had just stung him. The tiny Tunawa did not back down, though. He struck a noble pose in front of Bill and practically dared the mountain-sized human to strike him. Clearly the archer was too stunned to consider that, at least at the moment. Kasoria finished his walk over, picking at his teeth with a shard of rib bone from his earlier meal.

"Dun' think she needs savin', wee man," the Etzori rumbled, gesturing to the bows and blunted arrows with his bone pick. "That fer us? Fuckin' grand..."

He walked over and picked out one that... seemed sturdy, as far as he could tell. A quiver of blunt arrows, too. He settled the quiver over his shoulder so he could reach the arrows with his drawing hand, then shrugged off his cloak. Down to breeches, boots and tunic, he felt the cold nip at him more than before, but ignored it. Hardly that bad, considering what he'd endured back home. Besides, he'd need the freedom of movement, he'd wager. Then, using the bow almost like a cane (only without too much weight atop it), he then waited for their illustrious teacher to get started.

The supplies has been brought into the infirmity and most of her fellow healer were there. Genna has decided to take Vega up on her offer to teach archery as she freely a bit out skills would be helpful in the future battle. Genna might not see any fighting being in the hospital wing but she wasn’t stupid and was going to assume she would need something. Genna did have her war fan but you had to be up and personal.

Gennadiya walked towards the practice field. Even her she moved with that same grace she did in town. The blonde healer wouldn’t have know how to walk any other way and didn’t even realize she walked that way now. Unlike in town most of the men were busy here and didn’t really notice her which was fine with Gennadiya. There were a few though that did pause to admire her passing form.

The sapphire blue eyes were taking in the interesting tactics for practicing Vega. One eyebrow was raised in surprise as she watched the charging target. Then the little knight showed up.

Okay things just got weird Genna decided and paused completely unsure if she wanted to get involved with this or not. The blue cloak wasn’t alone in watching this event. Her gaze did notice the dark mercenary was also watching the little show for a brief moment she wonder about the little man. There was something there but Genna wasn’t sure if she wanted to know the story. Inwardly sure chastised her self at that point. She would actively try to find out but as a chosen of Ymiden she knew she needed to be open to all different type of people.

Gennadiya only noticed the pile of bows and arrows after the other man walked over to them. She also walked over glancing at the funny expression on the large man’s face as he looked at the small sword that had been thrown at him. Gennadiya looked at the range of bows before picking one up. Watching the others she then selected a quiver off arrows and selling it over her shoulders and then turned to see who else’s was coming.

4 Cylus 720 | Mathias Blackwood | Storm's Edge
Mathias came out into the poorly lit practice field, shifting his short bow into his left hand, to find a plethora of unusual- or at the very least- unexpected, sights. The first, and what one might have thought would be the strangest sight, was Vega holding one of the targets and charging at a man who Mathias did not know who was firing arrows back at her. As simple an archer as he was, Mathias would never have thought to do something like that to practice firing at moving targets. He'd once tried to shoot at fish in a river for the very same benefit but all that did was cost him arrows. What was more impressive to Mathias was just how much fun it seemed like Vega's 'practice' was. When he'd agreed to practice archery he hadn't expected it to be anything like this- because this was far better than what he'd been expecting.

The second sight he'd not been expecting, was the sight of the Raggedy Man and a small twig-like man talking. It earned a double take from the archer who shook his head and walked on towards where the practice would begin. He didn't need to question how the twig-man had arrived when he knew how Kasoria had. Instead Mathias went to collect the training arrows to place his his quiver. He'd set his gloves in his horse's saddle, not wanting them to interfere with his archery, and as a result exposed his hands with silver veins glowing faintly beneath the surface. He didn't think anyone here would particularly care about his somewhat glowing hands considering a tree-man had just thrown and sword through a portal.

Mathias drummed his fingers on his bow, letting a little of his ether flow through his hands into the bow to see how his bow was holding up. He'd had the bow for some time now and found that one of the more basic applications of his magic (Transmutation) was that it allowed him to see how far things were from breaking. As his ether spread through the wood he felt- he understood the tension in the bow's limbs. It had several battles left if he didn't dry-fire it like a fool. Confident his bow would not snap on him, Mathias walked roughly between Gennadiya and Kasoria (and by extension Kiaski) and waited to see what happened.

Vega stopped dead in her tracks as the simple enough exercise turned to chaos in the blink of an eye. She stood, dropping the target down and she started to hoot with laughter. Bill, for his part, seemed far less amused. "Gerrof, Chip!" Vega called, good-naturedly. "What're you doin'? We're jus' practicin'!" She made her way over and grinned. "It's righ' nice to see you again. How're you doin'?" She and "Chip" as she called him had met before in some very odd circumstances and she had a soft spot for him. But his name may as well have been Gurkle-ferk McNulty, as far as Vega was concerned, and so, since he'd been on her shoulder, she called him Chip. "How're you doin'? Bill stop yer grumblin' an' come meet my friend." Vega didn't have many friends, not at all. Mostly, because people were stupid and irritated her. So she was pleased and proud to be able to introduce Chip in that way.

She saw that the other bloke from the group who'd arrived earlier rocked up. She didn't know his name, but he'd been concerned about how much he was getting paid. He stood and leaned on a bow, seeming to be waiting for something. Vega had no idea what he was waiting for, so she didn't bother him any more than to nod to him. "Wotcha," she said, and that was that. Then, Gennadiya and Mathias showed up and she grinned at them both. "A'right, you two?" She'd said to the two of them that she'd be happy to practice with them.

Vega turned back to what she was doing and bent to pick up the target. Then, she realised something. "Why are you lot standin' around an' watchin'?" Vega asked, slightly incredulously. Were they expecting an invitation? It was a war zone, this place and they needed to just get on and do stuff. "You all know yer way round a bow an' a bow-range, yeah? If you don't, yell an' I'll help." She'd said she was happy to practice with them, not babysit them, for the love of Xiur. "If you wanna practice together, lets practice." Vega wondered at people sometimes. She was straight-talking and level-headed, pragmatic and practical in the extreme, and she really didn't understand why folks felt the need to stand about. "If you've never used a bow before, I'm happy to show you 'ow to string it, an' notch it an' stuff. If you've got a bit of experience, I'd suggest you start by tryin' to hit things that aren't movin' an' if you've got any semblance of skill, then yer welcome to play tag team with me an' Bill here." Oh for the love of Xiur, she thought, she was doing it, wasn't she. She was teaching them. "If yer jus' startin' out, the temptation is to dig yer heels in. Don't do that, it's stupid. It puts yer balance off, for a start, it restricts the way you fire, and it means that you get into the mind-set of fightin' bein' something that's still. It isn't. Even on battlements, if yer firin' at folks comin' at you, battle's never still an' if this is gonna be any use to you, you need to be able to use it runnin' through the woods, or on the back of a horse, or as a hundred people are dyin' around you. "

Looking at Mathias, she gave a slight frown. "Ah, knickers. A'right, in for a copper, in for an onyx. You work with Bill, if you wanna. You need to do more'n ponce about with that thing thinkin' you look good. Bill, you carry the target an' don't go easy on him." To Gennadiya, she motioned. "Lets start with the basics, yeah?" Looking at Kasoria, she raised an eyebrow. "I don't know who you are or nothin', if you want to train here yer welcome. If you want some help, I'm happy to give it. But I don't read minds." He'd make a good statue, but not much else. Then to Chip. "An' as for you my friend, whatcha wantin' to do? If it's bow-stuff, have you got one what's you-sized an' are you any good with it?"

Qylios, but this was turning into actual work. Vega maintained an internal grumble but it was mostly good natured as she waited to find out what people wanted to do. It was going to be a long trial, and quite frankly this lots get-up-and-go had got up and gone.

"Oh! Vega! How do you do? I'm pleased you remember me!" Kisaik beamed when he realized he knew the woman, from... somewhere. A dreamscape perhaps or some other adventure. But know each other they did! She was the one that gave him his human name, after all! "So where's Chuckles? How have you been?"

He began skipping over toward her, and at the last step, blinked with a zapping sound up onto her shoulder. "Pardon, Vega. My legs are a bit sore for growing, and portals are oh such a great way to make one's way around!"

He took in the measure of each of the people there, and his eyes gleamed as he caught the sight of the man who informed him that Vega doesn't need help. But first, he had an apology to make to, Bill? "Terribly sorry, chap." Kisaik bowed slightly toward him. Removing the shadow shiv from his backside was as simple as summoning it to his Kisaik's shadow, which he did presently, holding it up high for everyone to see.

It was a mighty weapon, but rather small. Mostly suitable for touching up with a poison of some kind or another, then tossing as Kisaik'd done. Since they were here to practice their ranged skills, Kisaik thought he could practice with some pebbles that he'd gathered for just that purpose a few days earlier.

"I can make some grenades for us, but they aren't exactly stable..., and they don't combust, but explode with a blast of water. I use them for gardening. I don't have any left but can probably whip some up in a pinch, if'n you all have some herbs that are suitable to the purpose, and some salt. I believe it was zap nip that was the active ingredient." Kisaik hummed as he touched his chin, and then turned toward the rest of the group that gathered. "Anyone has some zapnip? I sure could use some for when we get to the battle!"

"But now, since we're here, would someone mind assigning a target for me, so I can practice throwing grenades with pebbles?"

While Kisaik was chatting everyone up, Knugget, his Harpy Eagle, took to the skies. It'd come if he called it later on. For now, he was plenty satisfied to ride on Vega's shoulder.

Shite. Just my fucking luck.

Any teacher but her, and he would have been happy. Formidable and undeniable skill aside, he didn't exactly see many mentors in archery cluttering up Storm's End. But it was... her. Someone who instinctively rubbed him the wrong way, mainly by being much like himself. Abrasive, dismissive, unimpressed and utterly confident she could be so without anyone calling her on it. She was needed, after all. Someone with this much to offer a siege? No-one would be having a quiet word with her and sending her on her way.

So make the best of it.

"Used a crossbow a few times," he said, speaking with perfect accuracy, if sparing the details. She didn't need to know the circumstances, after all. "Big difference between that n' this." He patted the top of the bow. "So aye, I'll be needin' 'the basics', like yeh say. Jus' get me to the point where I can nock an' draw an' fire an' probably hit summin' comin' up the wall at me, an' I'll be happy."

The Raggedy Man swayed back on his heels as he waited for a response. He had little else to say, and even less desire to peak it. Around them all, a great rush of activity was underway. The castle hummed and throbbed with the voices and efforts of desperate preparations. Yet Kasoria knew it wouldn't be enough. Not until a proper column of reinforcements came to take over. For now they were outnumbered, and ever at risk of being overwhelmed. Everyone would need to know how to fight, and not just up close and nasty.

Nail the fuckers from a distance. Don't let them close in. Always been the bane of your life, hasn't it? Some cunt with a bow popping off arrows at you. Well... time to find out how that feels.

With definite, obvious care, Kasoria reached back and drew an arrow. He notched it with none of the smooth grace that Vega managed; she who made the action looks like one seamless movement, more akin to dance than archery. Kasoria had to make each movement mechanical, precise, measured and over-thought. Well, fuck it. First time and all. Once he'd notched the thing and the rest of the introductions were made, he'd wait for further instructions.

The young woman felt like smiling at Vega’s response. Gennadiya could see both sides of everyones behavior. To this very honest and forthright woman you just come and do what you are supposed to, to the others they thought there would be a class and so waited for the teacher to start. Gennadiya had to admit that wasn’t very practical since there was such a variable of skill levels. She had none, and it appeared neither did the dark character who was with them. Matthias appeared to know is way around the bow so taking lessons with her wouldn’t have helped him at all.

Gennadiya walked over to stand across from one of the targets. She wasn’t ready for a moving one yet, but she figured Vega knew what her skill level was and it was time to start practicing. Gennadiya looked down at the bow she was currently holding. It wasn’t a masterpieces but it was well made bow as far as she could tell. She ran her hand up and down the bow trying to get the feel of it. She then raised it to test the weight of the weapon. This was different then her war fan and so she continued to test it out. She carefully grabbed the string and gave it a gentle test and was surprised by how much resistance she encountered.

She pulled out one of the practice arrows and tried to notch it all the while trying to remember what Vega said about not planting your feet into the ground. That was more difficult she discovered then she thought. She put the arrows in the on notched and then fiddled with the grip but looked to her teacher to see if she was doing it right even as she raised the bow again this time with the arrow but didn’t pull back on the string yet.

4 Cylus 720 | Mathias Blackwood | Storm's Edge
It seemed Vega had been displeased in the general decision of the newer arrivals to wait until they were told where to go or what to do to begin training with their bows. Mathias understood if she'd been disappointed in him, given that he introduced himself to her with claims that he had some skill with a bow and perhaps of the lot of them he should have known what he was doing and where to go, but he had chosen to stand and watch because he was curious to see how the stick-man's arrival would pan out. When it had become clear that the stick-man was an ally Mathias eased slightly and Vega turned her instructions upon them. Mathias nodded to her and walked a bit aside so the he and Bill wouldn't run into the others, Bill seemed to strafe to the side with Mathias, hoisting the target and bringing it with him. About half way through his effort to walk a bit away from the group, Mathias realized that Bill was expecting him to shoot the target.

The young archer notched one of the dull training arrows as he walked, slowing down slightly to aim, then fired. His arrow struck the side of the target. It wasn't remotely centered and if it had been a few inches further it would have missed. The archer cursed under his breath as Bill began to pick up speed in his strafe. Mathias smiled, encouraged that his awful shot hadn't garner mockery from the man holding the target. Not that it really could, as Bill had no way of seeing where his arrow had hit given that he was hiding behind the target like it was a shield. Mathias picked up his pace as well, leveling another shot at the target which ultimately missed and this time- when it sailed just behind Bill, Mathias realized he needed lead his shots a little bit. Just as he was going to attempt such a shot, Bill changed the game again.

Bill pivoted, pushing towards Mathias in a zig zag as the archer began to backpedal. He hadn't put a lot of thought into backpedaling but it felt right when Bill charged him. Mathias aimed and fired, the arrow striking closer to the center of the target but still off it. Mathias reached for another arrow and lost his footing, falling onto his butt and dropping his bow. Bill stopped charging and lowered the target. "You need to mind your surroundings. Trip in a real battle and it'll probably be the last time." Bill said as he set the target down and went over to grab bow.

"Yeah, yeah." Mathias replied as he slowly stood. Bill gestured towards the target.

"You're turn to carry the target, I'll fire." Bill said and Mathias nodded. Mathias set his bow down and moved over to the target. He tried to find a comfortable way to hold it and when he had a grip he hoisted it into the air. It was heavy. Pretty heavy. Heavy enough that he didn't move all that fast with it, but he did try to move. Mathias began with trying to strafe as Bill had but he was slower than Bill had been and he felt the arrows hitting the target more often than his had. When he turned and charged at Bill, Bill did not start moving backward, he stood still and fired into the target. Mathias dropped the target before he got to Bill, shaking his arms out. Bill laughed and Mathias just kept shaking out his arms. "Alright, switch again?"
