(Caervalle Town) Fly Away Home

First trial of Ymiden, Arc 719

Last trial, Eliza had lived alone; with Darwin, Smudge and Eberhardt the only company she ever had. That was, unless she went looking for more company than an old gray cat, a talking pint-sized monkey and an enormous hound that took up more than his share of space at the foot of her bed. But when she woke up on the first trial of Ymiden to a young child bundled up sleeping on the couch in her gallery, the daughter of Ymiden wasn't at all surprised. Somehow, she'd already known he'd be there.

Wren. She remembered it very clearly. In Emea, when it had fallen apart and all the world crumbled around it, Wren had been holding on tight to her, and her to him. And now he was here with her. Why, she wondered, instead of with Hart? As she watched him while he slept, Eliza thought back and remembered that Hart, before things fell apart, had sacrificed his home to The One. So, had the One taken that sacrifice not only literally, but in a more figurative way? In many ways, Eliza thought, to Hart, family, that being Wren, was also home.

But if Wren was home to Hart, then Hart was home to Wren. And it wasn't the child who'd made the sacrifice. Before Wren had even opened his eyes, Eliza had made up her mind. Rules were meant to be broken. Somehow, she was going to find a way, and she was going to take Wren home.

The question of when and how to take the boy home, was going to require some thinking. Eliza didn't exactly know where Hart was. The last time she'd known of a place he might have been, besides in Emea, was Scalvoris. Even then, she couldn't be sure. But he'd probably lived on a boat back then, and wouldn't any longer. If she wrote a letter and sent it off to Scalvoris, would it somehow find its way to him? Or, had she told him where she was living? And if she had, would it even occur to him that Wren might be with her?

But then Wren woke up, saw unfamiliar surroundings and called out, and she'd have to think more on it later.
