(Emea) Mountain Meadows 3 (Mature)

15th of Cylus 716

The day's light was cresting in the sky, clouds rarely stopping the light. The small town seemed to be alive. The once calm valley town was slowly awakened throughout the morning. It would seem not a soul was left asleep, as they happily went through their day. Horses moving through the one cobbled street, as people peddled ware in the main square. The peaceful town seemed to not notice what was happening just up one of the mountains.

A manor on the mountain side, the doors seemed to drip with blood now. Servants were not seen, guards no where in their posts. From the outside it seemed to just be a sleepy day, though if you listen, there was panic. The halls were full of bodies now, no person was being spared the fate that was before them. Two men took the manor, they seemed to not care about human life. One just looked to be an average man, the other seemed estranged and disheveled.

Wald walked up the main stair well, the guards toppled over. Covered in wooden quills, the shards were even embedded into the steel plates. He allowed a smile to be kept on his face, as he made it to the top of the manor's floor. The man seemed quite pleased with his work, enjoying each moment of it. Once at the summit of the stairs, he looked around for any other people. One caught his eye though. Greasy black hair, and missing a boot. It was West.

Giving a small wave, with a smile that would fit on a cheshire cat. "Evening." It was said in a normal talking voice, as the voices of others could be heard in a room nearby. Wald kept a ear out even then, in case the sound of a secret passage opened. He approached his old friend, hand out for a handshake. "How is work going?"

West didn't care for the nonchalant smile of the other assassin. Assassin seemed like a generous word, to him. Killer was more accurate... Slaughterer, even more so. Maniac? Perhaps. Not that West had a great amount of room to judge. He undid the braid of his long black hair, then twisted the greasy strands in tight ponytail so that it would stay out of his way.

He grunted, rather than returning the polite greeting. Most of the manor had been cleaned up, but there were still the actual marks that needed to be scrubbed from existence. He looked to the room, then glanced to see the offered hand for a handshake.

West didn't accept it. He gripped the butcher's knife he held, blood still dripping from the edge. He snorted and said, "Peachy."

It was the closest that West got to a joke or light-humor. The tattooed man looked around the hall and mentioned, "Pity we can't burn them out."

"Let's get this over with. I need a drink," he muttered. West walked in a circle, as if a predator in preparation to pounce. He gestured to the door in offer for Wald to open it however he wished to. West loosely held the butcher's knife, relaxed and ready to kill as soon as the door opened. Not that he expected there'd be much to clean up. His colleague was highly proficient in mass murder, not being so... specialized to individuals as West was. It often made West wonder whether Wald had been in the wars or not. It would make sense, being able to take out entire armored units at once. West was far more smalltown, isolated from the wars, and able to focus one at a time on his targets.

It seemed humorous just how West acted. Always bringing a smile to Wald's face, though not the same as when he was working. Just how long have these two worked together? It was not as long as one would seem to think. Wald drifted into this small town just a few arcs ago. Though it did not take long for the two of them to get assigned to similar jobs, well... Similar would be a word for it. Opposite marks more like it. Such good memories. The two of them fighting, it was so much fun to have someone who did not just crumple.

As West walked away, Wald gave a squinting look over to him. He was getting older now, just how much longer could the small town killer last?

Wald slowly cracked his shoulders, as he reached in his jacket pocket. Slowly out of his pocket came a strange round object. It had no sharp edges, but had a small writing on it. Along with the round object came a strand of hair, to West it would be familiar. It was the same color and length as the young girl from downstairs. Just how did Wald get a hold of the daughter's hair?

After wrapping it around the device, the letters shimmered for a moment. Wald would place it into his mouth, just under his tongue before going to the door. It was locked, and he was suppose to keep the manor as in tack as possible. The man opened his mouth, as a high pitched voice came out. "Father open the door! The guards have a way out for us, please hurry!" Wald pulled the device out, as the hair had vanished.

The sounds of whispering and shuffling could be heard, Wald spoke in the daughter's voice perfectly. This would cause confusion between the small group. Until one of the could not take the doubt. A tumbler lock, a scratching door. The sturdy door swung open, a woman's face was in shock to who was right behind it. Though before she could close the door, Wald would grab her by the neck, before tossing her across the hall down the stairwell. A distinct crack could be heard on two of her landings.

West eyed the sphere, with the strand of familiar hair, and his upper lip curled. Magic of a sort that he didn't care for. He had no interest in aligning himself with such deceptive techniques. His bones might have had an odd control to them, being able to jut forth from his skin and then return, but only in spots. The rest of his magic relied on the tattoos sunk into the flesh and marrow of his body, though they showed on the leathered skin of his body all the same. Skin that seemed to be getting more wrinkled by the trial, now.

Ah, well, that was simply how time went. West couldn't stay young forever. No one could. Not even the killer beside him. Only a matter of time...

...he watched the shimmer of letters and then as Wald seemed to eat the object. Or whatever in the fek he was doing. He heard the trick of the voice, and moved aside to a blind spot of the door.

West observed, patient and silent when the door finally opened and Wald had the... mother? Aunt? He didn't get a good look at the woman before she was tossed down the stairwell. He almost coughed at that.

Instead, he set his one-booted foot against the door while Wald attended to the woman. He kicked it open, and slid around so that it could not be shut again.

"One, two," he counted in a voice that scratched in his dry throat while he counted the family that started to scatter in search for places to go or hide. "..four... eight... nine. You lot need to stop rabbiting."

West sighed when he saw a ladder lower from an attic space. He let Wald cover the doors, and he stalked up the stairs after a few of the family members who'd fled upward. There weren't many places to go, up there. They tried to push the ladder away. West hurried, however, almost running up the rungs in a bound, and he grabbed at the hatch. He might've been getting up there in arcs, but he had plenty of strength still. The man pulled himself up into the attic.

Wald gave a slow walk to the stairs, as he saw West slip into the room. He would keep an eye out on the door. As he looked down the stairwell, he could see the body of the woman. It was crumpled upside down, landing on her neck which was bent behind her back. If not dead, she would not be living for long.

Moving back over to the door, he saw as West scrambled up to the attic. He saw several of the people try and get to the door. One of them bumped into Wald's chest, before falling down to the ground. Slowly Wald would look down to the person who fell, it was a young man. They looked to be on the verge of wetting themself. Delivering a swift kick to the chest, he knocked the lad on his back. Taking a step forward towards the rest of the ones left below, his foot resting firmly on the young man's chest. Who began to struggle trying to get out from other the larger man, with each breath the boot moving lower.

A smile would be the last thing the lad saw, as Wald looked down to the young man. A shot of blood came out of his mouth, nose and eyes. As his ribs all cracked from the force of being crushed. Once it was done though, Wald's leg seemed to slip with a small pop. He let out a soft grunt, as he looked to the rest of the family line. "Looks like I should hurry with this job." The normal smile seemed to have shifted, as his face became something of stone.

Wald slowly took something off of his belt, a small knife. It was only the size of a man's finger, only useful for quick insertions. Though it would be plenty for the killer, as he moved it between his fingers. The people began to scramble to get out of the room, as he walked closer to them. Each movement of his arm, he stabbed the blade into each one of the people. A small pop could be heard each time, as the blade looked to have gone clean through their bodies. Soon the pile of bodies could be seen on the ground, each one seemed to have a hole blown through them. Wald would lean against the wall for a moment, trying to catch his breath. What ever he just did took an amount of stamina from him.

West did what he'd climbed the ladder to do... blood ran through the floor of the attic, congealing and dripping through the seams of the floorboards to lightly rain upon those in the floor below. His knife had gone rusty from all the death on it, lifeforce drained through the razor-sharp metal. There was still some sobbing, some rattled breaths, and then beautiful silence.

Back down the ladder, he tossed the kitchen knife aside and then looked over to see Wald stabbed through the last few remaining family. West's oily black hair had fallen down again, free from the hold and hung in frazzled strings around his shoulders. He scratched at his bare stomach, over a jagged scar that criss-crossed over a faded tattoo of a dragon. He waited for Wald to finish, without interrupting the work.

When Wald leaned against the wall, catching his breath, West nodded. He chewed at a dirty thumbnail, gnawing at the grime of blood that'd gotten underneath.

After a few bits of quiet while the two assassins allowed themselves a moment to listen to the silence... in case there was one more breath, one more patter or shuffle of footsteps, in case there was a survivor.

"Did you hear?" asked West. He went over to the window and opened it. The man leaned out and looked at a procession of carriages headed down the way. The cleaning crew, and then the new tenants. He looked over to Wald and said, "There's to be a new war effort. Only a matter of time before a draft hits the village... you gonna fight?"

The few moments of silence felt like it would last for the whole trial. Wald's breath was finally catching up with him, as he adjusted something in his pant's leg. A strange ankle brace that had a single red jewel inside, it was not a ruby but some unknown gem. It had a low glow for a moment, as the man twisted it for a moment. It was unknown what the jewelry did to others, even West was never informed. The truth was, it was simply a gift from his father many arcs ago, there was no magic to it, even if it looked that way. West knew that Wald liked his little trinkets, as they seemed to have so much fun with them.

The silence was broken by the sound of carts, then a question was given to Wald. Another war... That could be interesting though. "I doubt they would pay my fee for it." Wald said as he rolled his shoulder, audibly letting them crack. His breath finally fully normal, the short rest was all he needed. If someone were to jump them again, he would be ready. "Though, last war was fun. Did not get paid enough to be on a side." Wald had not taken part in the last war as a soldier, but as a objector. He was hired by a foreign power to take care of the higher ups on both sides of the war. As certain groups did not want one side to win. If the war did not draw one side would get stronger, and threaten the status quo of the area. To some it was best to pay people to keep the boat from being shaken.

West snorted when Wald made mention of his fee. He couldn’t fault it though. It was one of the few things he had in common with the guy: murdering and coin.

He scratched the back of his neck and thought about the last war some, at mention of it. He’d kept out of it, staying in the village. Maybe he wouldn't this time though... he'd been considering it for a while, but maybe this time, he'd actually leave his home of the village. West stretched his legs out and mentioned, “I think I might this time. Get involved, that is. Not a lot here for me, anymore… and I hear city women are… better than the laundry girls here.”

“I’ve actually got a contact up in the city, was thinking…” he paused. West traced his bloodied fingers over one of his tattoos. He followed it down to his wrist, then he cracked the bone. He cleared his throat and asked, “You want to come for the ride? Isn’t too far, only about three suns if we go fast, and could spend some of that coin we earned. There’s Caster’s tavern on the way, haven’t been there since… hell, I can’t even remember now. Since I was a pup.”

West got up from the windowsill. He cracked his neck, then waved at the bodies. “Clean-up will take care of these. I’m headed back, right? Get a proper outfit on and then, think I’m going to go. If you’re coming with, you can meet me at the east gates of the town in a handful of time.”

With that, West nodded and he started on his way out of the estate. He paused near Wald though, as if he were about to clap a hand on the other assassin's shoulder, though he only peered at the man instead. “One thing about a city at war, there's a hell of a lot more bodies to carve through and nobody is gonna blink an eye about it.”

Wald would give a small quirk of the eyebrow once the old man started talking. They were thinking of getting involved in the war that was to come. It seemed only slightly strange to the younger man. Though, West's reasoning seemed to be that of going new places, rather then political in nature. Wald thought about telling the older man about what he would be doing.

West seemed to be serious about leaving the village, that presented Wald with an new option. When the older man walked up to Wald, the young man's hands moved to pluck two greasy black hairs. Before pulling out a slip of paper handing it to West. "I got a contract to kill you not to long ago, thought I would give you either one fair fight, or let you go." Wald shrugged as he place a hair into a small vase, closing it while he leaned to one of the dead bodies. Forcing the small item down the body's throat, he would punch the vessel while inside. The body began to contort and change on the ground. The mirror image of West was laying on the ground dead. "I wont be able to go with you, but at least the king will not be looking for your head still."

Wald leaned against the wall, he pulled out a dagger and a ring offering both hands. "Take choose the dagger, we can fight see who wins." Wald motioned to the ring. "You may also take the ring, it will hide your appearance for as long as you need." The ultimatum was presented to West, the challenge of a real fight, or the freedom to move wherever they wanted without being recognized as the killer they were.

When Wald mentioned the contract to kill him, West stared at him calmly. Then he responded, "Huh."

Maybe a man was supposed to react more to something like that. It wasn't the contract itself that made him say it though, but rather that Wald had mentioned it at all. He should have a knife in his back right now, not be watching an unusual magic take place... seemingly to let him go.

The old, tattooed assassin scratched the back of his head. He looked down as he saw himself dead on the ground. Wald always knew how to mess with the mind. He had that up on him, figured West. Not that it was ever a competition. Assassinations were like farmers. The more of them, the better. They just carved bodies instead of wheat.

"Wonder what the king would do with my head," he mentioned and then sucked at his teeth. He shrugged when he saw the offer of the two items. He said, "And if I walk away without choosing?"

He tilted his head to look at the other man, then shook his head. The dark-haired man snorted, then he spat to the side.

"I'm not going to play your games," West said it, but he reached out and took the ring. He mentioned, "But if I'm going to die to a flounce like you, I'd at least like to be dressed in a decent pair of boots instead of just the one."

He put the ring on his little finger and glanced down at himself. "Did it work?"
