Devin's Treasure Hunt, Part 4

Fri Jan 24, 2020 3:21 pm

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Zi'da 4, Arc 719

“What kind of shyke is that?”
Devin complained loudly and stared at the empty treasure chest that stood in the clearing, in front of the ruins, incredulously. Eyes ablaze, he marched towards it, abruptly grabbed it with both hands, upended it with some effort and shook it vigorously as if he couldn’t believe that there was indeed nothing in it. Following that, he knelt down in front of it and let his hands run across the entirety of its surface in order to check it for hidden compartments. The result stayed the same though. The treasure chest was completely empty.

Absolutely furious, he kicked the chest as if it were its fault that there was no treasure in it anymore, and then he kicked it again, for good measure, with all the force that he could muster up. Having done that, he finally turned to face his companions again that just looked at him dumbfoundedly, as if they weren't sure what had just happened. “Where is the feking treasure?” he wanted to know. “Where is the feking treasure? This wasn’t supposed to happen! Where in Idalos is the feking treasure?”

“I think that we aren’t the only ones that were looking for the treasure”,
Des’trill, a pretty Sev’ryn woman and one of their guides, suggested somewhat hesitantly and shyly. Devin glared at her, and she flinched a little before she remarked, very softly, “Maybe there’s still something left somewhere? The ruins look as if they are pretty big. There might be hidden rooms and such. Maybe they overlooked something …”

Devin let out a shaky breath, calming down slightly, and nodded.

Re: Devin's Treasure Hunt, Part 4

“Sorry about my outburst”, Devin apologized somewhat reluctantly a few bits later, after they had decided to set up camp and discuss their next course of action. “It’s just …” He shook his head “How did those people even know about the treasure? I thought that we had the only map! I thought that there is usually only one map her treasure!”

“Mik’hail?” he asked their other guide, a Sev’ryn male with lots of tattoos in confusion a moment later. The man wasn’t paying any attention to him, but standing on his tiptoes and trying to reach for something on a branch of a nearby tree. He narrowed his eyes, and then he abruptly yelled, “Leave those alone!”

Mik’hail spun around and looked at him as if he didn’t really understand what was going on.

“They are good!” he insisted and pointed at what he had found in the tree. “If we fry them, they'll be delicious, in fact, and the food that we packed is already starting to taste a little stale!”

“We don’t steal eggs from a bird’s nest though!”
Devin informed him in no uncertain terms.

Being a thief, he didn’t have any problems when it came to stealing - with two exceptions. He usually didn’t steal from children unless they were annoying, spoiled little noble brats (he had grown up in poverty and couldn’t bear the idea of anybody suffering the same, terrible fate that he had suffered). Being a follower of Delroth, he also didn’t steal from birds. He had no problem when it came to chicken eggs though, because chicken were different from birds that lived in the wilderness.

“Alright”, Mik’hail muttered, shrugged his shoulders, returned to the rest of the group and sat down next to Des’trill.

Re: Devin's Treasure Hunt, Part 4

“I think that I have an idea”, Devin suddenly said and grinned before he tilted his head and looked at his parrot familiar that had landed on his shoulder affectionately. His companions who sat in a circle in front of their tents, munching on what was left of their food, looked at him curiously. Heidi, the goat who had dragged the cart that they had planned on filling with treasure bleated loudly and stared at Devin stupidly before she proceeded to eat the grass that grew in front of her as if it were the most delicious food ever.

Devin himself couldn’t even imagine eating grass.

“Des’trill said that there might still be something in the ruins, something that they overlooked. Searching the ruins the normal way will take us forever though. Fortunately, we have my friend here!”
he pointed out and stroke his bird that was red with a few blue, green and yellow feathers here and there. “He’s not a normal parrot, as Talieson and Aidan can tell you”, he informed Des’trill and Mik’hail. Aidan and Talieson who were his friends and roommates (and sometimes something more) nodded in order to confirm that.

“He was given to me by Delroth. Yes, the Delroth, the Immortal of Vanity, Birds, Greed and Wind”, he confirmed upon noticing the two Sevryn’s incredulous looks. “I’m a Tarouz, in case the marks on my arms don’t already make it obvious which means that I worship Delroth. I can communicate with my parrot through a mental link, so we’ll use him to scout the ruins and take a look at them from above. With any luck, he’ll find something.”

Having said that, he sent a mental command to his feathered friend, and the bird took flight. Since he was quite hungry and thirsty and still rather frustrated (although not as frustrated as before since he might get something out of this treasure hunt after all), Devin rummaged through his backpack, removed the single bottle of wine that he had left and took a swig while he waited for the parrot to find something.

Being a bit of a greedy bastard, he did of course not share his alcohol with his companions, although he generously offered one of the sandwiches that he had packed to Aidan.

Re: Devin's Treasure Hunt, Part 4

In the end the parrot did indeed find something, and a few bits later, Devin and his companions stood in a chamber deep in the ruins and stared at three large sculptures of birds as well as a tapestry that depicted a landscape with even more birds in all kinds of different colors. It hung on a wall that was still intact for the most parrt, and it was rather dusty, for obvious reasons. It had probably been there forever!

“Alright”, Aidan who was Devin’s roommate and occasionally something more said and scratched his head, as if he were thinking about something. “How are we going to get these to Desnind?” he wanted to know and looked at Devin and the others. “They look rather unwieldy! Does anybody know what kind of people might have lived here, by the way?” Being something of an academic, the young man was always interested in foreign cultures and their stories. Devin on the other hand was mostly interested in how much things were worth and how rich aforementioned cultures had been.

“I don’t know, but they seem to really have liked birds”, Des’trill replied, stating the obvious.

While his two companions speculated about the mysterious people that had made the sculptures, Devin came closer, eying the sculptures appraisingly before he abruptly bent down and tried to lift one of the sculptures, groaning slightly as he did so. A moment later, he grinned slyly. Delroth had given him more gifts besides his incredibly useful familiar and those fancy markings on his arms. He bent down and tried to lift the sculpture again. This time, he did so nearly effortlessly and carried it over to his companions with a huge smile on his face, acting as if it was nearly weightless – which it was in fact.

Des’trill, Mik’hail and Talieson just stared at him while Aidan actually applauded.

Devin bowed and showed his amazing sculpture-lifting skills off some more – because he could and because he really enjoyed doing things that none of his companions were capable of.

Re: Devin's Treasure Hunt, Part 4

Unfortunately, it turned out that the effect didn’t last forever. After approximately ten bits, the sculpture returned to its original weight and Devin abruptly set it down on the ground again because it had become quite unpleasant for him to carry. A moment later, Talieson helped him hoist the statue onto Heidi’s cart. The tapestry followed quickly. Heidi wasn’t strong enough to pull a cart that was loaded with three sculptures though; she barely managed what they had put on her cart now; besides there wasn’t enough room on it.

Fortunately, Mik’hail and Des’trill came up with an excellent idea though. The two Sev’ryn guides constructed makeshift sleds out of branches and cloth so that they would just be able to drag the sculptures. Dragging the sculptures turned out to be a slow and somewhat bothersome process because the sleds were anything but perfect so the trip back to Desnind took much longer than the trip to the ruins which meant that the only food that they had left when they finally reached the city was stale, old bread.

Devin didn’t mind the long trip back and the lack of luxury meals particularly. In fact, he didn’t complain one bit because he had some kind of treasure after all. He loved treasure!

He would put the sculptures into his Delroth's shrine in Scalvoris because Delroth only deserved the best, and he was utterly devoted to him, he decided. They would look great in it. He couldn’t wait to show them to Delroth when he came to visit him again (he really hoped that he would because he was his favourite Immortal). He couldn’t wait to show Delroth what he had done with the sorry little old shrine with the leaky roof!

He was really looking forward to that!

Overview

“What kind of shyke is that?” That's Devin’s standard reaction, it seems! (Oh my. Shyke! A key word of the old world!)

I find this series great fun so I was happy to read this part too. After all their efforts the novice treasure hunters find an empty chest. “Where is the feking treasure?” Gotta love how Devin takes it for granted that the world exists to make his wishes come true.

Then he sends a magic parrot to scout the ruins or potential leftover treasures while Devin himself ...drinks wine without sharing his alcohol with the others. His personality really shows in this thread.

I get a picture in my mind of a goat named Heidi pulling a wagon in which a big sculpture of a bird sits “driving” all the way to Delroths temple in Scalvoris ... and I can’t stop seeing it and I can’t stop smiling.

Entertaining and well written as usual!

Devin
