Moseke’s Mist

Image Image Image
‘Maiden’s Whisper’, ‘Bastards Root’ and ‘Moseke’s Mist’ are all correct and accurate names for the same common plant found in Rynmere. Best described as a large, white bulbous root, during Ashan when the weather warms up, the roots then sends up five or six chunky stalks through the earth. These stalks split into fives again, a light green in colour, that waits for the true sunshine of Ymiden and erupt into tiny white flowers. More often found under the shade of larger trees, they’re versatile to most types of soil and considered by some to be a weed. No self-respecting gardener or Lady would ever be found to keep Moseke’s Mist in her herb patch, partly due to its commonality, and partly due to the associated use as a contraceptive.

As Vhalar arrives after Saun, the flowers have budded seeds the size of rice grains. The seeds are a pale brown colour and easy to collect by hand.

Whilst the root of the Moseke Mist can be dug up over winter and beaten to a sour paste, and the stalks and flower can be stewed into a tea, the seeds remain the most potent and reliable contraceptive. If crushed they become versatile to ingest. As the seeds are only readily available during Vhalar, they are also the most expensive part to obtain out of season.

However, many women would swear that a spoonful of powder taken every thirty trials (days) will prevent pregnancy. Those that can afford to do so, keep a stock of seeds to grind and make sure to use the powder on a regular basis. In recent arcs it has become more popular to mix the powdered form of the seed with almond to create a sweeter paste and from there, small sweet treats that can be kept for convenience to be eaten once every 30 trials.

For those with shallower pockets, a small tea made from the white flowers should be drunk each day for most effectiveness and should a woman fall pregnant unexpectedly, the root provides a method to end this. The root is the most potent and unpredictable part of the plant, its strength influenced by soil, water availability and time of year. A woman using the root of Moseke’s Mist as a preventative measure should take extreme caution. Side effects of too much root can cause internal bleeding and severe cramps and discomfort, and in some cases, death. Use of the root in this way is more common over winter when stores of the flower become scarcer and again more expensive.

[Rynmere] Flora List

Dragonsnap

Image
Names: Dragonsnap / Snapflowers

Frequency: Flower: Common / Snapflower: Rare

Toxicity & Hazards: Non-toxic

Appearance: A bright yellow flower that appears every arc in midsummer (late Ymiden to early Saun). It is a beautiful bloom that appears on mountain sides and in the cracks in external walls as it seems to grow best in dark shaded places. Small white fronds extend from it, and it's shades vary from very pale yellow to flowers so bright they are almost neon.

Properties: Every now and then one of the Dragonsnap flowers will be found called a "Snapflower". A Snapflower blossom looks exactly like its usual dragonsnap counterparts but it is filled with a sweet delicious honey-like substance which is highly coveted by the best chefs in Rynmere for its delicious taste. This honey is always sought after by young Jacadon, who can often be found rolling in flowerbeds where the honey is found (it's like catnip for dragons). Jacadon can be very protective of their favourite wildflower beds, so locals are warned to approach with caution.

Other Information: Rumour has it that Snapflower honey drunk straight from the blossom is an aphrodisiac and will increase the chances of conception enormously if drunk shortly before or straight after intercourse. These legends though are not verified as the Snapflower honey has to be drunk straight from the blossom and it degrades within moments of being plucked.

Purple Gambles
ImageImage
Names: Gamble Flower

Frequency: Grows from late Saun to the end of Vhalar, and is found only in northern parts of Warrick, and along trails in the Burning Moubtains below snow-level.

Appearance: Dark purple flowers that grow in scattered groups, usually amongst the common weeds or long patches of grass, as they prefer shade and being protected from cold winds. Gamble flowers come in two colours, purple and blue, and are often difficult to tell apart. The purple flowers only ever have six petals, while the blue flowers can have up to eight. They grow on long green stems that can measure up to two feet in length, and the centres are always yellow.

Toxicity & Hazards: None that are harmful to humans, but too many flowers consumed by horses have been known to give the animals a terrible stomachache.

Properties: The Gamble flower is used to make a sweet smelling oil that makes wrinkles appear finer, hair and nails stronger, and softens rough skin.

Other Information: Unbeknown to most, the Gamble flower is a key ingredient used in making invisible ink, however, the process for extracting the right flowers during the perfect time of arc (year) is very time consuming.

Wickon Trees
Image
Name: Wickon Trees

Frequency: These trees are relatively rare in Rynmere, growing only in north and central Warrick, near the Burning Mountains. They prefer dry soil and warm, flat land to grow on, generally only found in grasslands. Outside of Warrick, wickon trees are nonexistent.

Toxicity/Hazard: Wickon trees are nontoxic, though can be hazardous to humans in other ways. Their danger lies in their leaves. Should a person come into contact with wickon leaves, perhaps by climbing the tree, they would fall in danger of becoming ensnared in the tree's branches. The leaves also turn hard and sharp in the winter; as such it is advised to be careful when standing under one of the trees during that time.

Appearance: Wickon trees are moderately tall, straight-backed, deciduous trees measuring anywhere from 30 to 50 ft in height, with a trunk about as thick around as a man's arms hooped. They have peculiar leaves, green in color but otherwise strange: long, thin, and pointed on the end. The branches of the tree only grow out of the very top of the plant, leaving a long, barren trunk that is very hard to climb. The size of one leaf, if removed from the main body of the plant, is about the length of an adult forearm, and as thick around as two fingers together.
Image
Wickon trees flower in the early spring like many other plants. Their flowers are said to be quite beautiful, trumpet-shaped, brilliant blue and flecked with black dots, reminiscent of a lily. The flowers grow in clusters and give off a delightful scent like a perfume, which in the summers give way to sweet-smelling blue-black fruit. During this time, specifically Saun, the wickon trees lose their leaves, unlike normal trees which shed in the winter.
Image
Image
On the outside, wickon fruit are rounded and smooth, almost shiny in appearance, and so dark blue as to be black. They grow anywhere in size from a bit smaller than a human palm to the size of a grapefruit.

The flesh of the fruit is soft and orange and marked with a simple, pleasing pattern, similar to a persimmon. Each fruit holds only eight seeds which are easily removed from the flesh. The taste of the fruit is incredibly sweet; the juice can be collected and dried in trays to produce yellowish wickon-flavored sugar, wonderful for use in pastries and desserts.
Image

Wickon seeds are flat and dull on the outside, an unremarkable brown, each about the size of a nel (coin). Cut open, they are a beautiful blue. Wickon seeds are not good for much, though some grind them to add to more fiber and texture to their breads. Others chew and spit them much as someone might on straw or sunflower seeds, though wickon seeds have no taste of their own.
Properties/Abilities: For the most part, wickons are like other trees, with bark, roots, a trunk, and branches. It is their leaves that make them exceptional. Because the shape of their leaves is poor for collecting sunlight, wickon trees find nourishment in other ways, namely by trapping birds and small climbing animals in their branches. Their leaves have the ability to snap shut over prey, winding in place to trap small animals much like a slap bracelet on a wrist. In the summer when they defoliate, the fallen leaves lose their ability to snap and are not dangerous to walk near or on.

In the winter is when these leaves, now newly regrown on the trees' branches, become dangerous again, albeit in a different way. In the winter, starting with the first frosts, the leaves become stiff and sharp, making wickon trees somewhat risky to walk under during this time, as any displaced leaves may fall and puncture anyone beneath them. In this way, the trees again seek nourishment; any small animal killed under the trees' branches will provide nourishment for its roots.

Lifespan and Development: Wickons may live for up to 70 years, casting fruit every summer. They reproduce sexually, needing pollen from another tree's flowers to produce viable young. From a seed, a wickon tree may take ten years to reach a respectable height, and they grow perpetually throughout their lives. Seedlings are small and incredibly spiky, almost like cacti, to dissuade animals or other creatures from destroying them.

Other Information: A person or animal ensnared by a wickon tree will not die immediately and will find themselves unhurt even if the leaves have wound around their throat, though they will likely be unable to move or pull free. If they are able to call for help they stand a good chance of being rescued unharmed, as long as their rescuer is careful not to be trapped themself. Wickon leaves are strong enough to grip onto a creature but not strong enough to crush or damage it; their prey tends to die from exposure, dehydration, or starvation, not from any injury sustained from the tree.

Saikuru
Image
Names: Saikuru, Noble's Blessing, Farmer's Friend

Frequency: Common

Appearance: This flower grows to roughly knee high on an average sized human. It produces large (palm sized), beautiful blossoms that are sky blue in the center of the flower with darker outer petals that range in color from purple, to dark blue, to black. The sky blue portion of the petals glows under the light of the moon, making this distinctive flower as easy to spot in the dark as it is during the day.

Toxicity & Hazards: Saikuru is not poisonous, but misusing this plant can lead to dangerous pregnancies for the female that consumes it.

Properties: Fertility. It is safe for animals, and people alike, and all parts of the plant can be used; flowers, leaves, stems, and roots. Saikuru can be eaten fresh, or brewed into a tea when dried. It has a light, sweet flavor that makes people and animals alike enjoy the taste. When given to a male, it acts as an aphrodisiac. When using one part of the plant (flowers, or leaves, or roots, etc.) on a female, it will guarantee that they will become pregnant, even if an animal is not in heat, or if a woman has given birth recently. Using more than one part of the plant will make the drug more potent, and may cause multiple births, especially in animals who are prone to them (like ewes since they often produce twins, and even triplets), or people who have twins in their family. This will also cause animals that birth litters (like cats and dogs) to bear litters on the larger side of average for their species. Using the entire plant will ensure multiple births; horses will bear twin foals, women will give birth to twins or triplets with a small chance of quadruplets or quintuplets, and so on.

Other Information: Saikuru is a very common flower that likes lots of sun, but can grow in shade. It can be found in primarily in grassy areas, and forests. And it can be cultivated easily, making it even more readily available. It grows for most of the arc; Ashan through Vhalar. Nobles (and any who are forced into a marriage they may not want) like it because it makes producing an heir very easy. Farmers who raise animals love it because it makes breeding their stock much easier.

Cost: Single Dose (fresh or dried) made with one part of the plant: 1 SN, Single Dose (fresh or dried) made with the entire plant: 1 GN, Saikuru seeds (1 pouch; contains 15 seeds): 3 GN, a mature Saikuru plant: 5 GN
