“Does it look very bad?“ Tristan asked in a somewhat excited tone as he noticed the shocked look on his slave’s face. He wasn’t quite as panicked and depressed anymore now that he could see that she was well. Comparatively well, he amended, as he noticed how she winced. “Are you really alright?” he wondered and then agreed, “I think it’s broken as well”, His voice sounded a little weird due to the fact that he had trouble breathing through his nose. “Do you think it gives my face a more mature and distinguished look?” he asked, hoping that she would say ‘yes’ because, otherwise, what point would there be in getting one’s nose broken and going through all the pain?

He considered walking over to Rita with her because she was his slave, and he should be with her, but he still felt a little faint, and thus he decided that it would be better if he sat down again and leaned against the railing – which he did. He watched the two closely though, occasionally touching his nose to see if the bleeding had stopped and if the slight swelling that he had noticed had gotten worse. He was all for trying out new things, but having his nose broken, he decided, was an experience that he did not want to repeat.

Faith, he thought as he watched how she knelt down next to the Ithecal and examined her, was amazing. Apparently she could not only cook and sew and fight (and do a few other things that one better didn’t mention in detail), but was also quite skilled in medicine which was something that he had not been aware of when he had bought her. It was great. He would never have to put up with Alistair’s bad bedside manners again when he got sick! Maybe, he thought, the Immortals did love him a little after all and didn’t just want to see him dead if they had blessed him with a multifunctional slave like her.

“That was something out of a nightmare”, he answered in a somewhat dry tone, assuming that she had asked about the gigantic shadow creature that had nearly killed them both. “And I’m already sitting”, he pointed out. His pupils were not dilated, and he didn’t have any other signs of a concussion either. His temporary weakness was mostly due to the fact that he had nearly died and spent several breaks emptying the contents of his stomach into a bucket. He’d get better again once they had reached Ne’haer. Hopefully.

The sky cleared up again, and the rest of the journey went surprisingly smoothly. For the first time Tristan did appreciate that. He was still sick and miserable and spent the last day at sea living on tea and soup so that he didn’t have to throw up quite as often, but he did not complain anymore. Being attacked by terrible shadow beasts and nearly losing your life could do that to a person. You started to appreciate the small things in life.

“I’ve never been to Ne’haer”, he murmured as they left the ship and looked around with interest. “I’ve never left Rynmere at all.” He felt much better than he had felt in trials – it was great to have something beneath his feet that didn’t move again. Unlike most of the passengers he didn’t wonder how they had reached their destination so quickly. Magic, right? What he did though was wonder how Ruq knew where they needed to go. He quickened his pace to catch up with him and quietly remarked, “I hope you are alright. I saw what happened to you.” After the attack most of his attention had been on his slave, but now he started to get concerned about other people as well. His brother would never forgive him if something happened to the love of his life during their adventure.

The man did not struggle, nor did he resist. He did not even plead innocent. Instead he cooperated with saddened features and a weight on his heart. The look of a man who knew that he had done wrong, and accepted the punishment to come. Some might call it a sign of a person with a conscience and a decent moral compass, but Yana was not convinced. There were many kinds of people in this world, and among them certainly were great liars and actors. Her prisoner’s behavior and displayed emotion were no guarantee for the truth. Though it wasn’t a confirmation of the opposite either. In the end there was no certainty without further questioning.

The sailor worked fast, tying tight artworks of knots that would take time for any not used to them to undo. Yana knew that her prisoner likely was one of those with such skill, but even he couldn’t do a thing with his hands on his back. However, one of the others might come to the rescue with a dagger to cut through rope… If only they had manacles and cuffs aboard. Secured with a key, there was little opportunity for escape, and Yana could keep the key with her, minimizing the chance of one of the others freeing the possible traitor. While there was no place to flee to –as the sea returned all who tried to escape the ship back to the deck—there was no telling what would happen if the man truly was a traitor, and if he was freed. He might come kill all Summoned.

“Take him away,” Yana commanded, eying the other members of their group with blank face concealing suspicion. “Is there a place for confinement around?”
“We don’t have a brig,” the sailor replied, “But we have a series of secluded rooms. Shall I take him there?”
The Yludih nodded. That would do just fine, she hoped. Especially if no-one else but her knew the location of them. It was unlikely though, and she supposed she’d have to be satisfied with posting some guards or so.

As the pair left, Yana remained on deck for a few trills longer, scanning the injured while the doctor prepared to patch them up. A quest of the Immortals, an inadequate bunch of champions, a possible traitor… two trials in and things were already dangerously going south. It was almost comedic. Bah. She shook her head slightly and followed the crewmate and her prisoner below decks.

---

Yana had questioned the man repeatedly, though ultimately his answers had remained the same. His answers had not solved any questions the Yludih had had, except for a few. It seemed evident that Ruq, or whatever he was called, had been manipulated. Neither of them knew by whom, but it was clear what for. While the identity of the actual enemy remained unknown, the false Eídisi did formulate some theories, but none could give a name or face. What it could however, was narrow down the spectrum of suspects to a limited group of individuals, and Yana did not like it at all.

Perhaps in different situations she would have dismissed the idea, but now they seemed plausible. And to be fair, in the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t that far-fetched either. The shadow beasts were supernatural in origin, she was sure. After all, no-one had ever seen or heard of them before Saun. And all of a sudden they were there, running rampant and killing folk. No-one knew what they were, nor where they came from. Clearly they were the work of some sort of magic, or other voodoo mysticism. Perhaps even an experiment in the works for decades, to be released past Saun. But surely no modified beast could appear out of thin air and vanish as soon as it was defeated?

Her answer was Immortals. Of course it was. This whole quest was starting to look a whole lot like a game of chess to her. On one side of the board there was the army of a couple immortals; champions chosen at random, granted an Immortal to guide them to their destination. No interference from their guide, no sir. They were to battle without help. On the other end of the board there was the shadow beast army, more than likely headed by some other Immortals. The goal of the game obviously was to crush the other army by any means necessary, and it appeared that the enemy was not above meddling with the pieces and thus cheating. They had “moved” one of the pieces of the other team to their side momentarily, thus planting an enemy in the midst of the other army. Or they had planted their pawn among the opposing forces from the very start, painting them white until it was time to show their true colors.

Given the power of the Immortals, there was no telling whether or not Ruq was a pawn of the enemy. He seemed to be telling the truth, but he could just be a great actor. Or had his memories erased or something. Either way, he could not be trusted, and there was no way to vouch for his innocence.

This proved to be especially troublesome in deciding whether or not to discard the man’s instructions. Yana had decided not to trust anyone else with the handling of the prisoner, not even when they arrived in Ne’haer, but now that he was speaking up and giving a very specific name and place, she wasn’t sure what to think. Trap or truth? Were these instructions given by the right Immortals or not? Were there even ‘right’ Immortals? Was she seeing things that weren’t there? Was she reading too much into it? “I need a second opinion,” she declared, looking at Doran, finding that he was at least not as stupid as the others. “What do you think? Should we listen to him?”

She herself was teetering on the edge. Not listening to him would ultimately prove to be the safe option, she believed, as furthering the quest or walking into a trap were basically the same thing with this group of people. Then again, that meant they had nothing to lose, and they hadn’t received any other instructions from their guide either. All they had been told was to get to Ne’haer, which they had, but nothing more. “I am inclined to believe he is on our side,” she spoke, her words not meaning she would untie Ruq, as there was no telling when he’d transform again. “And we also have no other clues to go on. So I would say we go to the Hall of judgement… But what do you say?” She eyed the bearded man calmly, waiting for his reply.

The Ithecal seemed to feel the need to try and teach her something. Faith considered that it was probably not meant to be patronising and so did her best to not be offended. She simply nodded along, did what she had to in order to judge that the Ithecal wasn't going to die (which she wasn't) and then made her way back to care for Tristan. She looked at his face and she could not help but smile "Right now, Master, no. But it will when the blood is washed off and the bruising has faded. Now, it makes you look much more dangerous, which might not be a bad thing all things considered" she smiled and continued to tend to him. "I am not sure, but I think I might have broken a rib or two. I will check in a moment." Her smile was genuine and somewhat apologetic.

But at least the rest of the journey passed in relative ease and Faith sent more than one grateful prayer to Famula for that fact. Tristan, too, seemed less unwell and less unhappy but she made sure that she kept his fluids up and kept him as able to function as possible. When he was resting, Faith made sure to go back to the ships kitchen and cook for everyone, rustling up the best food that she could manage and baking a number of sweet flans and cakes too, in order to ensure that everyone had the option of something sweet; shock was often treated with sweet things.

And then, they arrived and Faith nodded her head to Tristan "I have been to Athart, but I was kept restrained for most of the journey so this is all very new" she smiled up at him with a nervous expression. Keeping pace with Tristan as he moved to speak to Ruq, Faith nodded her head and smiled to him. "Are you feeling alright? Can we help with anything?" she asked. As for where they had to go, well it seemed to her to be as good a place as any and if he knew then he did. But then there was a bottom line for the young slave; she went where Tristan went and so she simply waited to see what his decision was.

[Global Event] The Humble Son

The danger passed, the shadows disappeared, and the sea was calm once more, but the Mortalborn did not dare to relax. Even after the sky had cleared, and the ship continued its journey, he remained on deck watching the people around him warily while Yana interrogated the traitor below. Somebody needed to be there in case another near disaster took place, he thought as his gaze fell on the Ithecal who claimed to be a doctor but seemed unable to keep herself from getting hurt. He was not normally a pessimistic man, but the sight of his fellow adventurers gave him a most unpleasant feeling in the pit of his stomach, and he could not help but wonder what else would go wrong.

He only moved to his cabin long after the twin suns had disappeared behind the horizon, but found himself unable to sleep. He did not dare to sleep, not next to them. They might accidentally sink the ship and kill everybody on it while he went to Emea. And thus he spent most of the night in the kitchen, over a glass of wine, pondering the journey so far and the things that were yet to come. Perhaps he would really disappear once they had reached Ne’haer. But if he did so, he would never find out what was really going on and whether the entire mission was more than just a sick joke at their expense, and despite everything he wished to solve the mystery.

He was surprised when the ship safely reached the harbour, and the city that he had left a decade before came into view. Despite the fact that nothing had happened during the last trial, he had been worried, more than he wanted to admit. He was about to leave the ship when the Eidisi he had met earlier, one of the few people besides him that were unhurt and one of the few that he had a modicum of respect for, approached him. As she spoke, he simply looked at her thoughtfully for a moment, pondering her question.

“He seems to be a victim“, he finally replied and looked at Quio briefly furrowing his brow as he did so, before he abruptly turned to face her again. He could not stand the sight of the false Biqaj for longer than a few trills at a time. “But I do not trust him entirely. He is too easily manipulated. Who knows when the shadows will try to take control of him again? We have few options besides doing what he says though if we want to find out more. I know where the Judgement Halls are. I used to live in Ne’haer for a while before I moved to Andaris. If he is lying, and this is a trap, I have ways to make sure that he will not be able to betray us again, and I know where we will be safe.” He was referring to his abilities that he was loath to use in everything but the direst of circumstances due to the fact that using them could possibly shorten his lifespan, and his aim was to live until Idalos itself died.

Having said that he started to walk in the direction of their destination since Quio seemed to be quite unwilling to take them there. It seemed strange to him that the man knew where they had to go, but not how to get there. Was that a sign that he was not as innocent as he claimed to be after all?

The wounded were being tended to. The one who'd been transformed, and couldn't quite be trusted except by the foolish was detained. The crisis then was over. But Padraig couldn't help but believe that their troubles had only just begun. He couldn't begin to believe that any of them had been brought together by forces with only their best interests in mind. But the best interest of those who'd summoned them? That, he could believe.

The most of them might have survived the crisis, but it had made plain how poorly the lot of them coordinated with each other. And it had added an unneeded element of distrust.

The figure at the helm, the one resurrected from the deep. There was him too. No matter how skillfully he piloted the ship, or how well he'd seem to bend the very seas and the skies and kept them out of the depths, he continued to unnerve Padraig. So while he returned to his cabin, to privacy and solitude, when he'd slept it had only been fitfully.

And in spite of smooth sailing for the rest of their journey, when they finally disembarked in Ne’haer, Padraig was no more inclined to blindly put his faith in Quio's innocence than he'd been before. Maybe he'd speak with Faith if he got the opportunity. She'd mentioned earlier that she knew him, and her perspective might help put his mind at ease. They were all in this together, after all, if they were to choose to remain together. And it appeared they would, as many of them, including himself, set off for the Judgment Halls.

When a woman slapped Quio's dagger out of her hand, she didn't know what to think. It was clearly not an accidental action, but why would she object to her helping an acquaintence? Before she could think too much on that, the woman was ordering that Quio be bound. Then she spoke further, but she spoke in a language that Lei'lira could only recognize as Rakahi, not understand. People seemed to obey her, though. Did that mean that she was part of the crew? Maybe connected to the person who was steering the ship, and was possibly an Immortal? Was she an Immortal herself?

Lei'lira watched in confusion, but made no more gestures to help Quio. Had he done something wrong? Lei'lira didn't know, and she was already so far out of her comfort zone that she didn't dare act. But when Quio spoke to her, asking her to take care of his dog, Jack, she nodded. Even if Quio himself had done something wrong, Jack could not have. So Lei'lira called the dog over to her, and moved away from the commotion. She would happily look after the animal until Quio could take care of her himself.

*********************************************************

When morning came, and it came time to depart the ship, Lei'lira heard Quio telling people that they needed to go to the Judgement Halls, and the Council of Minäih...whatever those were. She remembered that Quio had been to Ne'haer before, so she decided that she would follow him. As Jack bounded through the crowd in search of her owner, Lei'lira followed, deciding that the dog could find him in the crowd faster than she could. But she soon lost her among the crowd, so instead of continuing to search for Quio, she decided to follow the others, who all seemed to be heading in the same way. With luck, they knew where they were supposed to be, and how to get there.

Winners of Side Quest Challenge
Quio and Lei'lira.
Wow, that took a long time (to review), but I’m so glad I got the chance to be involved in such a massive thread so early on in the site’s history. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed. A special thanks to Djinn for stirring things up, and to everyone who managed to do three or more posts! Blown away by the quality of work and the well crafted, honest, and interesting characters you all play. I’m sorry there wasn’t more opportunity to interact with each other, and that I had to go MIA for a week part way through. This is one of the bigger threads I’ve run in my writing history so you’ll have to forgive my using you as test bunnies! Would love some feedback, good or bad, stick to posting style or change things? More information or less? Etc, etc. Enjoy your rewards.

Comment: Your posts are always so well done, and what I love about you, is the fact that I can tell you edit your work. Starting a sentence with and isn’t breaking the rules, but I find it a little strange starting a paragraph with that word. By my understanding, ‘and’ as a conjunction, connects two ideas, and a paragraph, or at least the start of one, is a new idea and should begin with the topic. I struggled to find knowledge, Padraig seems to be a thinker more so than a doer, and that can be tricky to reward. Still a big fan regardless!

Comment: Too easy to love this boy and equally so to hate him. He is so in love with himself, but I can tell he really cares about Faith, and I love the internal battle and how true to character you always are with him. Beautiful writing as always, easy to read and it flowed well. Thanks for getting so involved!

Comment: Box-code was a little tricky to read from, I would suggest having a second style with a faint colour to break away from that black/grey. Story, however, was excellent, and editing a vast, vast improvement (I actually struggled to find any mistakes). Thank you so much for getting involved. Faith is like glue, she really holds everyone and everything together so well.

Comment: Always liked Yana, liked to hate her that is. She’s one of those people that would just absolutely rub me up the wrong way and I find her fascinating. I’ve enjoyed all of your stories (well, we’ll just put the linguistics grind aside), and it was great to see her in a bigger thread with more people! She is such a leader, just not the kind anyone wants. Hahahaa!

Comment: Great little posts. I think there were some areas where you didn’t pay much attention to what other players were writing and made a couple of mistakes, so I would be more careful of that next time. Will be interesting to see how Rita handles Ne’haer with that injury. I have to agree with Doran, she certainly has a death wish!
