Post here if you are studying at the Viden Academy

Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

Re: The Academy Registry

It was about time that he started to work on the next step of his academic career, the Mortalborn decided. He was almost done with his Licentiate in Alchemy (he might be able to finish it before the end of the cycle), and he was making a decent amount of progress in regard to his thesis and the research involved that would constitute a major break-through.

In order to advance beyond his current position, that of a professor, he needed to acquire a second degree in a different field though, a Charter at the very least. There were two subjects that fascinated him – medicine and chemistry – he had worked as both a doctor and a chemist at different points in his long life. In the end, he had decided on the subject that would aid him the most when it came to his work as an alchemist though.

With that thought in mind, he headed in the office – early in the morning, when the Academy had just opened its gates for the trial, as always, as he wanted to avoid the worst of the crowds and had no interest in waiting in line for half a break or more. When the two people that stood in front of him had left, the Mortalborn who was garbed in a fine coal-black suit, swiftly approached Mr. Gilson’s desk and inclined his head politely in a greeting before he spoke,

“Good morning. I am here to apply for a Diploma in Chemistry. I was given permission to bypass my Letter and Certificate studies and take the corresponding qualifying exams instead.” Once the mortal handed him the form, he filled it out before he returned it to him.

Late Afternoon
First of Ymiden, Arc 720

Llyr slid through the door, a quick glide of his body past the secretary and he exhaled with a short breath then asked, "Is Mister Gilson still here for the trial?"

A nod and a point directed him to the increasingly familiar desk of the incredibly consistent Mr. Gilson (Llyr had to wonder if the man ever took a day off from his hard work in the registrar's office). The fair blond biqaj fixed his coat, so that the top buttons were undone so he could breathe a bit easier. He'd ran through the streets to reach the office in time, and even flitted with his wings a few times, but he'd managed to arrive just in time.

Mr. Gilson held a briefcase with a slight look of disappointment that one more student had managed to get in before his escape. Least until he recognized the mage with the halo above his head, and the silvery-blue mark over his right eye, and Mr. Gilson sat down with a nod. He fixed his half-moon spectacles so they hadn't slipped so far down his nose. "Isn't it a season too early for your next enrollment, Mister Wellin?"

"Oh, for that. Yes, yes, it is. Excellent memory, Mister Gilson," agreed Llyr while he sat down in the chair and brought out his already finished paperwork to hand over. "I'm here for another registration, however."

"Another? The charter in Arcana is not enough for you?" J. Gilson raised his eyebrows then shrugged. Students taking on multiple subjects wasn't uncommon, especially not in an academy as prestigious as Viden's, but it was the end of the day and Mr. Gilson found himself too tired to pretend he hadn't heard of the biqaj's unorthodox attempts at teaching magic and how sporadically he went in and out of the academy.

The bridge of Llyr's slender nose wrinkled with a bemused expression. He tapped his hand on the paperwork and then added a letter to the top from Professor Thetys that accounted for the payments. He said, "It actually fits in to what I am doing! You see, there are so many tomes on magic and journals too, but they are left to be buried under dust because their language is so inaccessible to the populations outside of Viden who do not have the luxury of the Magistrix's keen oversight in regard to languages. Not only that but..."

And so, it was that J. Gilson deeply regretted asking a question of the young mage, who subsequently spent the next fifteen bits explaining and describing in varying levels of comprehension about the two institutes, the potential overlap between them, and how he planned to... Gilson stopped listening after the sixteenth bit, having gone to wonder about how he could have been home already by this point if he'd gotten away a little bit sooner than Llyr had arrived.

Finally, however, he cleared his throat and wrote on a sheet of paper before he interrupted, "So, it looks like you have everything in order. Here is the confirmation for your records."

"Thank you," said Llyr while he folded the paper and put it in his satchel bag. He swiftly stood and offered to shake Mr. Gilson's hand, who wearily accepted it. He headed out of the quiet office with a wave and an enthusiastic farewell. "Take care, and bundle up! The wind is cold out there."

Re: The Academy Registry

Vhalar 41, Arc 720

The Mortalborn did not mind the company of other people as much anymore – in fact, he was downright sociable compared to what he had been like before – but waiting in line and staring at someone’s back was still not an activity that he enjoyed. For that reason, he made his way to the Academy in the early breaks of the morning, when was just opening its doors and when the streets of Viden had not been entirely cleared of snow yet.

There was just one other person in front of him, a young human male with dark hair, that bade Mr. Gilson farewell just as the Mortalborn who was garbed in a black suit with hints of crimson stepped forward, inclined his head in a greeting and smiled slightly. He reached into his leather briefcase with a gloved hand and removed a number of documents from it.

Mr. Gilson looked at them with a raised eyebrow. “Another degree, I assume, professor?” he asked. People getting more than one degree was something that happened quite frequently; there were fewer that were ambitious enough or mad enough to take on several Charters or Licentiates though. Doran Thetys was apparently one of them.

“Chemistry, Mr. Gilson”, Doran replied in a polite tone of voice. “A Charter. I am not entirely sure if I will get a Licentiate in this subject as well yet, although I do of course already have several ideas for a thesis”, he admitted. He only needed a Charter in his second subject to become Chancellor, and his studies of alchemy kept him quite busy sometimes. On the other hand, a second Licentiate would not be that much more work, so he had not given up on the idea yet.

“Everything seems to be in perfect order, professor”, Mr. Gilson replied once he had checked Doran’s documents that proved that he had previously acquired his diploma before he handed him a form as well as a pen. Doran took it, thanking the mortal, and proceeded to fill out said form. A few moments later, he already handed it back to him.

Re: The Academy Registry

Early Morning
25th of Vhalar, Arc 720

Llyr Llywelyn arrived to the registrar's office a break or so before it was expected to open. Mr. Gilson greeted him, well aware of the arranged time, as the agreement had been made over a short exchange of correspondence between the two men.

"Good morning, Mister Wellin," said Mr. Gilson. The human glanced over his half-moon spectacles, his gray eyes cold and colorless. "You sent word that you required filing for a new student as well as for your courses?"

"Yes. Good morning, Mister Gilson," returned Llyr while he held the door open. Behind him, another blond man entered the office. "This is Iver Wellin."

While Mr. Gilson greeted Iver, Llyr walked further into the office while he shrugged off his heavy cloak. He hung it up on a coat rack, then sat at Gilson's desk. He crossed his legs, and brushed off a speck of dust from the ivory white trousers. Llyr had gone with an outfit in varied shades of white, mostly ivory and pearl with a satin edge to the high collar that resembled the shade of vanilla icecream. The silver tint to the biqaj's skin stood out even more than usual, by contrast.

"...so, you will be in the Institute of Arcana as well?" inquired J. Gilson while he sat on the other side of the desk. He handed the paperwork for Lars to look over.

Of course, Llyr already had his paperwork filled and ready to be handed over along with the tuition.

"Of course, as I sent word last season during Saun, I have already begun my Licentiate," he assured while he took out the stack of forms. He set them down in a neat stack, the coins kept in a leather envelope. He had already gone over the paperwork with Lars in the privacy of their home, but had insisted it was important for Lars to fill it out in front of Gilson.

While Lars did so, Llyr conversed with Gilson some about the weather and then the expedition to Valaris. He tried to ignore his lingering habit of awkwardness with genuine small talk, and it had gotten far easier to do so since he'd started to manipulate his own emotional tangle. How could he be anxious when he hemmed away the thread so that he might not even feel that way in the first place? He tried to not speak too much about Valaris though, despite Gilson's insistent curiosity about it.

"...and you know that window which cracked over in the Azure wing? Yes, that one. It doesn't quite make sense that it would be the cold, now does it? All the other windows near it were fine. How did one finally strain under the ice, and it's not even into Vhalar yet! It was Saun! Well, some people are saying that maybe it's due to the heat instead but- oh, Iver, are you finished there?"

Llyr trailed off the gossipy conversation, while Gilson looked over the new student's registration. Once it was settled, he stood and bowed to the registrar.

"Thank you for seeing us like this," mentioned Llyr while he accepted the confirmation receipts for his own records. He retrieved his cloak and clasped it back around his shoulders.

"I'm often here early anyway," mentioned Gilson with a nod of his head to the pair. He escorted them to a side door, that led to an adjacent hall meant for office workers rather than students.

"And I am sure you are also often busy with other things," said the biqaj. He reached out, to shake Gilson's hand, and while they shook - a small coinpurse exchanged from Llyr to Gilson. The human tested the weight before smoothly pocketing it into his vest. With that, Llyr said a final easy farewell that mirrored Gilson's good-bye while the office door shut.

Llyr looked to his apprentice and thinly smiled, then said, "Now that we have your confirmation paperwork as a student, I can show you the restricted floor of the library. Pick up your feet, there are lots of books just waiting to be seen and touched."

Re: The Academy Registry

25 Vhalar, 720

The only reason why Lars entered the registrar’s office without an overwhelming panic simmering beneath his calm expression, was because he arrived with Llyr instead. He followed just a few steps behind the tall biqaj, and when the door was held open, he slipped through with his head bowed low. Whether it was a sign of respect or to keep his face from view, it wasn’t clear.

Cold hands folded at his waist, he wore a plain fitted shirt of lavender hue, tucked neatly into his high-waisted, midnight blue trousers. Wavy blond hair was pushed to one side and tucked behind his pierced ears, where golden earrings dangled and shimmered in the light. He offered the man Llyr called Mister Gilson a polite smile, neither friendly or hostile in any regard. When his companion introduced him, he offered in addition, “I’m pleased to meet you, Mister Gilson.”

Lars seated himself in the chair beside Llyr’s, and crossed his legs in similar fashion.

“...so, you will be in the Institute of Arcana as well?” inquired J. Gilson while he sat on the other side of the desk. He handed the paperwork for Lars to look over.

“Yes,” answered the soft-spoken blond. He took the papers and looked them over, and was glad for the fact that Llyr had already gone over everything with him before they’d arrived. Lars said nothing more than he had to, after that, as he balanced the necessary paperwork on his knee and began filling everything out.

It took him longer than he would have liked, to get everything written out as nicely as he wanted it. Writing had never come easily to him… but then, he’d never had to do much with it. The education provided by the Viden Academy would give him far more than enough time and opportunity to practice, he supposed.

Only half-listening to the idle gossip entertained by both his mentor and the registrar, it took him a moment to realize that his name had been spoken. Pale eyes lifted from the pages to glance at Llyr, and Lars offered a nod. “I believe so, yes. Here you are,” he straightened out the papers before handing them back over to J. Gilson, filled out as neatly and concisely as he could manage.

The Grafter uncrossed his legs and stood. When Llyr bowed, Lars did the same, before running his hands down the front of his shirt to keep out the wrinkles. After glancing to make sure the confirmation papers were handed off to Llyr, he followed alongside him as J. Gilson led them to a side door.

Although considerably lighter than the weighted shake of Llyr and J. Gilson’s hands, Lars reached out to shake the registrar’s hand moments after. It was a gesture he despised; one he wouldn’t have attempted if he didn’t wish to remain on the man’s good side. With another slight bow of his head, he offered the man his farewell, and then followed his mentor out of the office.

Lars returned Llyr’s thin smile, then replied, “Lead the way.”

Re: The Academy Registry

61st of Vhalar 720

Woe decided a while ago that it was time to stop occupying the dregs of ignorance and do something to improve his situation in the world. Part of that meant leaving behind certain misanthropic patterns of behavior that had plagued him from a young age. Another part meant enriching his mind. To that end, he made for Viden, traveling all the way from Quacia to the city of Ice, in less than forty days.

The first few nights had been spent trying to arrange for accommodation. That of course had gone rather awkwardly as one would expect of a stranger arriving in an even stranger city. The place appeared carved of ice, and the chill, the chill! It was worse than that terrible winter he'd spent in Ne'haer. Malach truly hadn't exaggerated the cold of the icy north.

The first day he spent familiarizing himself with the city's layout. Where the main points of attraction were, namely the Academy. Then he learned of the Prisms, the caste-like partitions that separated people of different walks of life. Woe could appreciate the adherence to Hierarchy, certainly. Then there were a few businesses besides, and a large bureaucratic institutions that were meant to serve the public in finding whatever they needed. It was quite a bit easier to assimilate here than it had been in Quacia. Where here it took only a few days, in Quacia it'd taken the better part of a season.

That's not to say that one was more worth the while than the other. Certainly, both cities had something to offer. Quacia with it's arcane sanctuary, and Viden with its emphasis on learning and personal growth.

Woe settled in nicely that first day and found a small flat in the Carnelian Prism. From there, it didn't take long for him to get enrolled in an Academic program or two. He met with a few students living nearby, and they directed him the right way.

He found himself in the reception of the Academy, filling out the forms and paying his tuition up front. As one did.

As Rickith entered the registrar's office, he looked around in awe. He had been here before, when he was younger, when his mother would take him, but had yet to come here as a student. As he looked around, he saw the seats where one was to wait, and he went over and sat down, next in line. He ran a hand through his wavy black hair, and smiled at another student that had watched him walk over to the chair. Looking down towards the ground then waiting patiently to be called, he folded his hands together. He was adorned in a white tunic, some brown leather pants, but as he had just come in from the chilling weather outside he had his fur coat on. His fur cap had been taken off when he sat down, and was now hanging from his hands, in the center as they were folded together.

Patience was a virtue his mother had taught him quite some time ago, and one he always grew up utilizing. It seemed to be less stressful to be patient, or at least, that's how Rickith viewed it. It was definitely a quality people tended to notice with him. He looked up then, when the registrar asked for the next person in line. Only two more people til it was Rickith's turn. One more person. And then finally it was his turn. He got up and walked over to the registrar, and smiled, after the man looked at him with his incredulous look. "Hi, my name is Rickith Lanza. I'm here to register for the letter course in Alchemy?" he said, and then the man motioned towards a stack of paper, and said, "Please fill one of these out. Your instructor will be Doran. Report to this room at the appropriate time..." Rickith nodded, and then proceeded to filling out the form:

Once the form was filled, out, the man let him know exactly which classroom, and when his classes happened to be. Rickith thanked him, and the proceeded on his way out of the registrar's office...
