Noth

Atop a stony plateau overlooking the lands of central Idalos, and growing wealthy from the gem stones pulled from the rocky soil, Etzos is a bastion of independence; firm in its belief that man should rule Idalos, not be servants of the vain Immortals who nearly destroyed it. But can the many factions set aside their conflicting agendas and see this through?

The twilight hybrid continued his observations of both the professor before him, and the experimentation process as the man before him took the powder, preparing a series of glass vials as well as wooden sticks. Noth assumed that the sticks would probably be used for stirring in the same manner that people sometimes stirred their drinks to ensure that they were properly blended before partaking of them, and the glass vials were quite clearly containers capable of holding the powder and any other chemical concoctions without removing proper vision from the professor. The first and second vials were filled with some of the alchemical reagents that the scientist had brought along with him, but Noth noted that the final vial was left otherwise untouched. Perhaps he only needed two?

It seemed that the fears the hybrid had that the professor would use too much of the powder for it to e usable in any other circumstance were unwarranted, because in truth he barely used any of it at all. There were several ounces of the strange powder; perhaps even a pound of it, though he had never properly weighed it, but it seemed unlikely that the professor in his wisdom had even taken a single ounce of the powder, choosing instead to simply add a few grains of the oddity to the vials. Crimson eyes watched with blatant curiosity as the powder was placed into the first vial, and the substance within seemingly vanished into the ether, gone away as though it had never existed, or else as if it were as mercurial and erratic as the wind. It would be a lie to say that his eyes did not arch in surprise at the sudden change, though he regained his composure moments later so as not to alert the professor to his true emotion on the subject.

For an instant, Noth wondered whether or not the professor had heard his question, or simply decided to disregard it in favor of performing his work, but then the vocalization came forth from the man’s throat, and he glanced upwards as if to examine him with the same eyes with which he had observed the vials only a bit or so prior. The name was one immediately familiar to him, because it was one which had been talked about with some awe by many throughout the city. The Avriel could not suppress the slight grin that crossed his face at the thought of holding a conversation with the Hero of Oscillus. It was true that he tried his hardest not to become too closely entrapped in the politics or the national prestige of the city; though he did recognize that eventually it would be required of him if he wanted to take it from the grip of Pahrn and his minions, but even he could appreciate the work of someone who had decided to knife an Immortal through the back, and despite the rather underhanded connotations behind the act, it was altogether not a terrible strategy to exploit.

The hybrid did not speak on the subject further, not wanting to bother the renowned professor too greatly with his speech, and recognizing also that they were both simply men of similar cause, nothing more, nothing less. Nevertheless, a scheme softly spoke itself into existence within his mind, and his blood-colored eyes found the third vial, analyzing it for a few moments for any discerning marks as to where it had come from, or from whence it been delivered. Rather frustratingly, he found nothing immediately telling of the vials, but that was not to say that they were not being provided by some unknown benefactor… or perhaps even a well-known one.

The professor identified the nature of the powder to him, stating that it was an alchemical neutralizer. Whilst Noth could not entirely comprehend what that meant, he did understand enough to realize that the powder was eliminating other substances, and preventing them from achieving their own chemical reactions.

“Ah. So that is its nature, to cause other things to become nothing in its presence? Do you know of what it is then?” The hybrid was neither prideful nor naïve enough to believe that he had the only sample of the powder in all of Idalos, and that meant that it had no doubt been named by someone else at some point. Having the name of his newest tool would be quite useful for doing any further research on it, and he did not doubt that the Hero was well-versed in such matters.

The twilight hybrid shifted the weight of his feet, feeling his talons dig slightly against the wooden paneling beneath as he responded to the professor’s question,

“In honesty, I know only that it came from a dark place underground, it came with a bag and…” He thought back to the first time he had opened the bag, the first time he had gazed upon his own skull sealed and wrapped in a nice package for him to unravel, and it made him visibly shudder, unconsciously tearing at the wood with his talons as he recalled it. “I am unsure whether I could truly retrieve more of it… but I am under the impression it is somewhat beyond the comprehension of mundane things. You mentioned a potion. Could this powder be distilled into something more solid?"

The slight grin on the hybrid’s face clearly told the Mortalborn that he had recognized his name. He expected Noth to ask questions and demand to know what exactly had happened in Oscillus, but to his surprise he did no such thing, but remained focused on the task at hand. That was something that the Mortalborn appreciated. He had already told his story about a hundred times since he had arrived in Etzos and was tired of the sometimes foolish behavior that people exhibited in his presence. Besides he was not sure if he really was a hero. He had merely done what needed to be done and what nobody else had dared to do.

“That’s in essence what a neutralizer does”, he confirmed as the hybrid asked him whether the powder’s nature was to cause other things to become nothing. Noth had a quick mind, he decided, even though his appearance left something to be desired. “I know what the powder does, but not what it is called”, he admitted. There was no shame in that in his opinion, especially since ignorance was usually only a temporary state. “I have never seen anything like it. You may have stumbled across something that is one of a kind or at least so rare that its existence has never been recorded in any of the archives that I visited. We may be the first people to ever study it in a scientific manner, and for that reason it may be up to us to name it.”

“Perhaps the place where you found it or the bag that it came in would provide some clues in regards to its origins”,
he mused. He had half a mind to ask the hybrid for the exact location of the dark place that he had mentioned or at least the bag and see what he could find with his unique talents, but eventually turned to answer Noth’s next question as the matter interested him as well. He did not reply immediately, but thought about the matter for a few moments.

“I am confident that it could be”, he eventually said. “But any reagents that you mixed it with in order to make it more solid would likely have to be of equal strength or even stronger than the powder itself. I am not sure how useful such a thing would be though. To me a powder seems to be much more versatile."

The twilight hybrid could only imagine the level of attention that Doran must have gotten from the adoring crowds of Etzori for his actions. It was rather interesting how perception changed the opinions of people and what they perceived to be fair and unfair, just and arbitrary. As far as Noth knew, the story went that the good professor had crept up towards Xiur in the midst of the battle and then promptly driven a shank of metal through his back. Most people would typically think that the idea of jamming a knife through someone’s back when they were already preoccupied to be dishonorable, and yet, the Etzori had responded favorably to what they thought was a ‘heroic act’. The Prince conceded that it was a pragmatic move, though it seemed likely that it had been spurned by a whim, and it certainly wasn’t honorable to strike from behind, no matter the circumstances or target.

Not that he had ever truly cared for honorable. It was a contrived social construct that simply got in the way of getting things done. For all he cared, people could fight each other through poisons and explosives, could sneak snakes into beds and hire cajolers to carry crossbows under their instruments. In the end weren’t the results all the same? Why was it so important that a person die on their feet as opposed to dying on the ground? Pigs stood on their feet when the hammers fell, and no one thought of them as anything more than contemptible creatures suited only for consumption. In truth, he’d almost rather be killed by something that he had no chance of knowing was coming, because at least then it meant that he couldn’t have stopped it as opposed to having known, and still failed at preventing his untimely fate.

The alchemist spoke, confirming his suspicions on the nature of a neutralizer, and further admitting that he could understand the effects of the arcane powder, but that he could not identify it. That was news to the hybrid who had fully expected for the talented professor to be able to determine with exact precision what the powder had been. Instead, he spoke the opposite, alerting the Avriel to the fact that he had never seen the neutralizer before, and that it was likely not recorded in any archives. The prospect of being allowed to name the powder was an intriguing one, and he immediately scrounged through his admittedly extensive vocabulary searching for an appropriate name. Perhaps it could be called ‘Null’ or ‘Void’ in relation to its nature?

“The bag that you have now is the same one that it came in, professor.” He addressed the man’s request, nodding towards the bag which contained the remainder of the powder. He had thought it to be relatively unremarkable, but perhaps the alchemist would be able to discern something of interest or intrigue from it through his more scientific application of observation.

Doran answered his question with an affirmative, and the twilight hybrid immediately allowed the hint of a grin to spread across his features as his scheming mind considered the potential applications of the powder. The professor had mentioned that he considered it far more versatile to keep the powder in its original state as opposed to mixing it into anything, but Noth disagreed on the principle that they would use the reagent for far different purposes. Doran was a scientist and an alchemist which meant that he would more than likely take his share of the powder, and use it to conduct assorted research and experiments to better his knowledge of the world around them. Noth on the other hand was a fledgling warlord, a soldier and a killer, and the idea of flinging magical dust at someone in the midst of a fight was one not entirely effective nor appealing to him.

He immediately deigned to better refine his question to ensure that what he desired was within reach of the alchemist’s talents.
“If I brought you a steel gauntlet, could you bind the powder into its making so that it would neutralize substances that were touched with it?” It was not a blatant revelation of his purpose for the powder, but it certainly hinted at a martial application more so than a basic scientific one, and he hoped that the alchemist would be pragmatic enough to recognize the potential for reward if he accepted the task.

“I see“, the Mortalborn replied thoughtfully as Noth informed him that the bag that he had now was the same bag that the powder had come in. He had wrongly assumed that it had been in a container that had been half rotten due to being subjected to the elements for so long and that said container had eventually been replaced with a new one. “Would you allow me to keep the bag as well so that I may inspect it further and perhaps find out more about where it came from? In exchange I will give you a container that is durable and that will keep your share of the powder dry and well-protected.”

Noth, he noticed, was somebody that showed his emotions openly which was a kind of behavior that was foreign to the Mortalborn. The look on his face was nearly always the same, polite, but slightly cool. Rarely did he express any kind of extreme emotions, unless he was serving Syroa, the Immortal who had marked him and made him hers. For perhaps the first time since they had met back at the alchemist’s shop he wondered what kind of thoughts were running through the hybrid’s head and what his goals were, but he eventually dismissed those things as inconsequential – at least for the time being.

“That”, he replied without hesitation as Noth asked if he would be able to bind the powder into a steel gauntlet. “Shouldn’t be a problem. It will have to be a gauntlet of sufficiently high quality though as I do not know how the power will interact with something of inferior make.” Another alchemist might have wondered what Noth intended to do with such a gauntlet and if he would, perhaps, use it for some sort of nefarious purpose, but the Mortalborn did not really care, especially if the reward would be great enough. He had engaged in more than his share of questionable activities in his life and had a rather pragmatic attitude towards most things. Besides, it would pose an interesting challenge.

“When would you like us to meet again?” he asked.

The Hero questioned whether he could take the bag to further his experiments, and the hybrid nodded his acceptance of those terms. In honesty, he had no use for the bag beyond the usual and mundane qualities of storage, and it seemed like a fairly decent idea to allow the scientist to further his understanding on the nature of the strange powder and its subsidiary items before attempting to forge anything from them. Noth was not very familiar with the subject of alchemy, and though he had learned much throughout his time with the alchemist, he knew he certainly did not know enough to ever attempt to experiment on his own. Nevertheless, he had heard stories of over-eager alchemists accidentally detonating themselves in their laboratories after making foolish mistakes, and the hybrid was rather opposed to the idea of his desired item accidentally detonating the instant he put it upon his hand. Clearly, research was of benefit to them both.

The man seemed far more down to reality than Noth had expected of the Hero of Oscillus, and he found himself several times simply observing the fellow in a vain attempt at understanding how his mind worked. Was he actually an arrogant and scummy sort who was simply hiding that particular aspect of himself for some unseen reason? Was he a sneaking and conniving sort who took part in creeping schemes and plots for the sake of improving his personal power or social position? Had he chosen to stab Xiur for a personal reason that had burned deep in his heart, or had it been an entirely political movement, something performed for the sake of others so that they would see him as a paragon of virtue in Etzos. It was difficult to tell, because the man was altogether quite coolly put together, and though Noth thought he could see tidbits of personality hither and thither, altogether the fellow kept himself fairly involved in the business at hand.

The hybrid’s question as to the possibility of crafting a gauntlet together was answered rather promptly by the man who immediately made it clear that it would not be an issue. The gauntlet would need to be of a higher quality, because apparently the alchemical process might otherwise weaken the structural integrity of the metal and make it entirely pointless as an armor, but other than that slight stipulation, the process seemed to be something nearly elementary to the talents of the alchemist. Noth was admittedly impressed by the confidence that he was exuding, but it was not surprising given the legacy that the man had crafted for himself. After all, was it not the nature of heroes to perform mighty deeds and terrific acts, and to forge forth things of legend?

“I will give you ample time to look into the nature of the powder. Meet me on the… 70th of Vhalar at the place where we met?” That would give the scientist plenty of time to uncover the nature of the powder and to better facilitate the creation of his empowered gauntlet. With their business drawing to a close, the hybrid stuck his hand out for a shake in proper social standard, separating out a portion of the powder for the alchemist to keep for himself, and keeping something like two-thirds of it with himself in a separate container.

Thoughts of fantastic power flickered through his mind as he prepared to depart from the inn, and he knew that it would all be in the palm of his hand.

“The 70th of Vhalar is acceptable“, the Mortalborn replied. That would give him ample time to study the powder at his laboratory below the Tower of Ministers and conduct a few experiments with it. Perhaps he would even be able to find out where it had actually come from. The story that Noth had told him, the material of the bag and its age and of course the powder itself would all provide valuable clues. “I’ll meet you at the same place and the same time. If I cannot make it for some reason and have to delay our meeting, I will leave a note with the innkeeper and let you know when I’ll return.”

With that he put his share of the powder away, packed his equipment and shook Noth’s hand without hesitation before he bade him farewell, leaving the hybrid to contemplate the mystery of the Hero of Oscillus further. He briefly stopped in the common room on the ground floor to watch two men fight each other, thinking that, if he changed his mind about the meaninglessness of such things, none of the people in this tavern would stand a chance against him, and then he swiftly moved away from the Outer Perimeter and returned to the city proper.

He would begin his research that evening, he decided, after he was done with a project that he was working on for the Chief Adviser regarding the combination of alchemy and domain magic. Maybe the results of his research would even aid him on his mission.

An unlikely meeting that turns out to be not so … unlikely. I enjoyed how both of your characters are opportunistic in different ways, and I’m sorry, but that third room on the right may have gotten totally different action if not for you two! That gauntlet sounds pretty awesome. And yet scary.
