What's hot at the Kettle!

33 Hot Season 716

Besides temper's flaring?

F'mos would not have expected to see such a volatile situation since he had come to Etzos. Working with the Black's had exposed him to the communal culture of those which frequent the soup kitchen. The more well to do people within the walls may call them commoners but the Aukari had noticed that these 'commoners' never seemed to be wanting. Even when they seem to easily share what they had with those others which needed them.

It was such the easy going lifestyle that when he had first heard about the extortions and beatings, even the possible murder, F'mos thought of them as nothing more than the usual table chit chat. The gossip which he had grown to rely on to keep in touch with the goings-on within the city walls of Etzos as the Aukari couldn't make the trip as often as he'd like or risk detection by the authorities. Now he wasn't too sure. He wasn't even comfortable listening to the conversations thinking they were getting too dangerous a topic.

Dangerous because it would only take one spark to have yet another mob ready to beat someone else, or another group of soldiers passing by to get the wrong idea. Whether or not F'mos had anything to do with it, any of those possibilities will end up with him being involved and the Aukari only wanted to continue with preparing and serving the food. His job, which was the only thing which mattered to him despite the troubling times.

One of the reasons he had picked working for the Blacks too was that he wouldn't draw any attention to himself. It was outside the city walls where there would be less chances of him running into the authorities. It involved no one important as he would only have to work with the commoners. And despite all these considerations, he was told it was well stocked in terms of gear and food. Among all the others available to him, it was the perfect job for the Aukari who wanted to lay low.

And it had proven good to him so far even if it had only been a season. A deserter with nothing else to bring with him to Etzos other than the things he had with him when he made that decision. It only took that long for him to get a home with the essentials and even a kit to work with that other skill he had learned from his mother. The season was so good that he was even able to keep the beast properly for the season while he had no other choice but to live out in that tent.

The good fortune he had experienced showed even as he worked. Where last season F'mos had difficulty in even making sure he was able to function adequately in the kitchen, where the job was messy enough that he hadn't enough clothes to make it through the entirety of Ashan if he wasn't careful about it, his job in Ymiden had him with a new garment almost every other trial as he needed the change. Just like he had in this one.

Such things no longer being in consideration for him was good as it allowed the cook to focus on what was truly important. The food. At the time he was serving up the soup, when he was listening in to the gossip, the talk about the violence of Ymiden, it was evident that he was becoming distracted. As much as the soup was being scooped into the bowls of the Black's many regulars, there was a significant amount sloshing out of it. Falling on to the ground and F'mos own clothes.

It was quite fortunate that the hot cycle wasn't at its hottest yet and that the soup getting on his clothes wasn't like a whole bowl of it just falling on him like one of those times when he was just starting out with the Blacks. Back then, it was easy to pull through after the sudden shock of the heat biting into him thanks to Ashan being just right to cool him off. Now he wouldn't be that lucky. It wasn't Saun, but there was only so much that he could take before he erupted.

Because he was concentrating so much on the conversations by him, he never noticed the amount of soup weighting down his shirt. It was only when one of the other customers pointed it out, asking if he was hot in that or uncomfortable that he felt the sensations on his arm and side. Giving his thanks, he quickly finished up with giving out the soup to the rest of those waiting for it before heading to the back and checking if there was anymore soup to be served or if the Black's was done with lunch for the trial.

What's hot at the Kettle!

Heading to the back couldn't have happened at a better time. As he made his way to the back, F'mos could hear the voices rousing. The people were getting louder now that they were almost done with their food and had nothing else to occupy their mouths. That worried him and he quickened his steps until he reached Maylan to ask if there was anything else. She noticed his anxiety, and then the sounds which came from behind him. The Aukari after giving the quick explanation was concerned that she didn't seem bothered by it, other than to tell him to be prepared to get back to work.

There may not have been as much riots back in Sirothelle because the Aukari never wanted things to get heated enough to risk a mass eruption but recalling his past experiences as a guard, F'mos was quite familiar with how out of control these disturbances can be. He started to voice his concerns again to Maylan, this time being a little more specific about the conversations out front, the tone being used and how excited the customers seemed to be at the prospect of doing...something. Again she just told him to ignore it and be prepared to get back to work.

It was clear that as far as she was concerned, there was nothing to worry about. And there was no explanation provided to F'mos about why he shouldn't be worrying.

However F'mos was still uneasy and when Maylan had suggested that more food would appease the ones out front, or at least have them taking their incendiary topics elsewhere so that those customers which wanted their meals could actually have a chance to get them, he immediately got to work. Although she was the one who was in control in the kitchen, F'mos was still allowed to help and he was going to help. Especially if it was going to help the food get prepared faster.

With a whole season of experience working with the Black's, F'mos was already growing familiar with how they worked in their kitchen. Maylan herself had already prepared the game Rowan had brought back. All there was left to do was to cook it. Their new hire, F'mos, was quick to bring everything the human had asked for in the way she had asked for it. While Maylan was working the pot, F'mos was grabbing jars and other containers. Their contents quickly being put on to the ingredients before being handed off over to Maylan according to her instructions.

Though F'mos did all that he could under the circumstances, like the guard following the orders of his superior back in Sirothelle, his efforts still didn't do much to expedite the process. In the end, it was Maylan who was going to prepare the soup and all he could do was watch. The Aukari recalled the old saying, too many cooks spoil the broth. It wouldn't do if he, in his eagerness to have the soup served to the customers out front ended up slowing down Maylan instead or worse, have them both trip over each other to the point that the soup could no longer be served to them.

And that wasn't even the worse possibility he had in his mind at the time... What if the whole of Kettle Black caught fire because of it and really arouse the people close by into an actual mob? He didn't want to be responsible for that.

Fortunately Maylan was able to finish the soup without any incident and called F'mos to start serving it while she attended to her other work with the game Rowan brought back. The Aukari quickly got to it without question, believing that the front had gotten more rowdy than it previously was. He tried his best to get the soup out front as fast as possible, spilling only a little more than he should've if he was doing it carefully. The waiting customers quieted down as soon as he cried out the words everyone has been waiting for.

"Soup's on!"

The people got in line, with F'mos serving each and everyone of them in turn. He kept an ear out for anymore talks of causing any trouble, doing his best to try and pacify such risky thoughts through suggestions like "why don't you enjoy your food while you're here?" and "doesn't sound like something to talk over a nice, hot meal." When those failed he just asked the straight question, "how was your day?" hoping to get their minds off the violence which probably didn't involve them. From what he had heard, those involved were either having medical attention or were locked away.

Or at least that was what he think had happened according to the rumors.

Notes:
Heya F'mos! This is an interesting little thread! I liked the part about you getting the soup on yourself, and thought it was creative how you handled the crowd gossip at the end.

I'd like to suggest that you use actual dialogue in your scene more often instead of 'she just told him to ignore it'. Also, describing characters in more detail as well as the location you're in can add a lot to a scene!

Example: Maylan wore a brown apron with a bandana wrapped around her net to keep it secure. It bobbed as she wove through the kitchen to prepare the stew she was working on. "Ignore it, is' just gossip. 'Yer a cook, 'nut a bouncer! Prepare 'tar get back 'tah work!" growled Maylan.

It's also worth looking into Showing vs Telling if you haven't already. It's a lot easier to award lores when actions are described as opposed to told!

I hope this helps! Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions or concerns, or if I missed something!
