Make Alistair happy and stay in the light.

Do good for the people of Rynmere.

Donot let nobility wither my humanity.

Remember the filth.

All can emerge from filth.

Be cautious: lessers, superiors, equals.

Donot live in fear.

Live for growth, not survival ??? - ask more

Learn ways to dispose obstacles so conscience and view of myself remains strong. light??? pure?

If there is an obstacle that might bring you fear, learn of a way to dispose of it that does not darken your conscience and weaken your view of who you are.

Follow these.

Dear Fri F Lotharro,
Alistair's hus......

F,

I'm sorry I hope you don't mind Since you can read and write...
I wasn't expecting This is harder than I... I am glad I met you

Let me us start again. I write to you now so we might try find explore a different way to get to know one another.
I would like to apologize for... I know Alistair intended well
You're even difficult to write to, Lothar.

Perhaps you and I can make an effort, for Alistair's sake. He says much about you, good things too. At first, he didn't though. I knew nothing of you, not your name or your presence or...

Thank you for not hurting me, even though I don't .

I acted like a fool.

I hope you are faring well. I'm sorry I called you terrifying, but you are. This is difficult for me.

Your son is a strong, young boy lad. I can see your blood in him. Alistair told me of what happened to him. It was kindly of you to bring him to Quacia to reunite the family. A decent intention, I'm sorry that .

I had heard other things about you, though, from Kleine about the man called Abaddon. Of your jealousy and brutality toward those you view as other not worthy of your love.

You likely don't know much about me, as I know near to nothing about you. Perhaps Alistair has spoken about me, like he has spoken about you... it would seem possible, considering the other trial.

While I would prefer to keep it that way, I can't ignore our mutual interest in Alistair.

If you would like to try, please please write me. Leave your response in the silver lockbox set on the mantel, beside a small bear figurine, in the upper common room. You will find the only other key along with this note, so that you might check for my reply as well. The box is only accessible for the two of us so do not fear to write freely.

If you do not wish to write me, and to learn of each other for Alistair's sake, then simply place the key under the lockbox.

I will understand.

The Contract

For Alistair's Eyes Only

31 Ashan 719 ~ Rough 1 ~ Page 1

Regarding the Offspring of Alistair and Zarik Venora:

Per the noble marriage of Zarik Ki’enaq to Alistair of House Venora, under the legal authority of their mutual residence in the city of Quacia, blessed by a Herald of the Theocratum on the 9th of Ashan in the Arc of 719.

Agreement has been made between spousal parties to wed in a ceremony under the blessing of The Seven in the season of Saun in the Arc of 719.

Alistair Venora (“The Patriarch”) has promised to provide and care for his noble spouse for the undetermined length of their mortal lives, and for all offspring produced between their combined bloodlines.

Zarik Venora (“The Matriarch”) has promised to provide fertile wombs for respectable heirs to House Venora under Alistair’s direct paternity: through surrogacy of matched bloodline or other legal means accepted by the courts of Rynmere.

Both parties have agreed to the production of a total of twelve potential heirs, barring unforeseen crisis or involuntary death of either spouse.

*
31 Ashan 719 ~ Rough 1 ~ Page 2
On the matter of Asher Venora (“the miracle”):

Though born of surrogate means, and paired with the blood of both spouses, due to the circumstances, he does not befit the title of heir and as such, has no claim to House Venora’s crown or throne.

However, he will be cared for like a precious and accepted child, a gift and symbol of the Seven’s blessed guidance of this divine union.

The miracle’s surrogate, Kleine Volgotha, has no claim to Asher’s rearing, or the decisions of his life. Volgotha may be allowed to be known by Asher as to his role in bearing the miracle.

Upon any changes in regard to his standing with either party, this permission may be removed and such boundaries legally enforced. He may not claim or boast his surrogacy in the public spheres for any reason, and to do so will be met with appropriate judicial punishment.

31 Ashan 719 ~ Rough 1 ~ Page 3
On the matter of the Family Estate:

Housing shall be provided by The Patriarch, adequate to the size of the household - including family, servants, and otherwise so that each child has their own private room after the age of 8.

Such housing structures must have the following: Warmth in the cold seasons, windows to open in the warmer seasons, plenty of room to travel through the interiors, storage capabilities for possessions, wide spaces for common areas so that the entire family is able to meet and comfortably talk together, a kitchen that must be - at all times - fully stocked with nourishing foods and drinks, no less than three fireplaces, a training hall for sparring and a library for studying, and a dining hall that accommodates at least two guests for each family member in the household.

The maintenance and management of such households will be handled by The Matriarch, to ease the burden of The Patriarch’s time and obligations.

Such management includes the following: memorizing the correct codes for any thrall servants, assuring that all other servants are aware of their tasks and that the household is not understaffed, to confirm any new hires with The Patriarch’s approval, managing the basic education of the heirs, organizing any household meetings, parties, and like events, to succeed in a clean house and happy children, to do his best to provide a home of laughter, love, and kindness for the cultivation of strong, healthy, and wise offspring.

31 Ashan 719 ~ Rough 1 ~ Page 4
In the event of Spousal Death:

Upon death of The Patriarch, the entirety of his estate’s wealth will transfer to The Matriarch to provide a future to care for their offspring. Though the Matriarch holds no direct claim to House Venora, any legitimate heirs may claim such a thing at the age of adulthood.
all legitimate heirs are promised their rights in the line of succession as per Rynmere's ducal laws
Upon death of The Matriarch, per current laws of Rynmere, permission is granted pre-mortem for The Patriarch to search for a replacement so that the heirs might be cared for: but only if the replacement is kind-hearted, clever, and capable of satisfying the many needs of both husband and children.

This agreement will be supplemented by a proper will, notarized by the proper representative in Rynmere and the inhabited city in which the household estate resides.

31 Ashan 719 ~ Rough 1 ~ Page 7
Regarding mistresses and affairs:

A mistress is defined by any romantic or sexual partners who do not fulfill the sanctioned role of noble spouse to the Patriarch.

The Matriarch willingly consents, of sound mind and independent spirit, to singular devotion of the Patriarch; to not lay or allow another in spousal or intimate physical affection; to not court another except for purposes of persuasion in accordance to the Patriarch’s needs and requiring his permission, prior, for all such expressions.

In the event of any mistresses, of male or female gender, the Patriarch will not hide such wandering interests and inform the Matriarch of such events within seven trials of their occurrence.

If the Matriarch believes for a mistress to be of danger to the family estate, their offspring, or holdings, then the Patriarch must sincerely and respectfully consider requests to separate from such relations - and by not doing so, chooses to threaten the security of their sanctioned house and scorn the blessing of their divine union.

All mistresses and affairs hold no claim to any of the offspring that lives in the estate's household, including The Miracle; no legal claim to any holdings, wealth, or estate resources; and no attempted superiority over the Matriarch in decisions made regarding the House, family, or Patriarch.

Il Cortegiano

It seems to me that in love, just as in everything else, we all judge differently. Therefore it often happens that what one person finds adorable, another finds most detestable.

Despite this, we are all alike in cherishing the one we love, and quite often the blind devotion of the lover makes him think the person he loves is the only one in the world possessing every virtue and completely without defect.

Yet since human nature does not allow such complete perfection, and since there is no one who is wholly without defect, it cannot be said that such people do not deceive themselves, or that love is not blind.
It is not a question of deceit… but of an embellishment for whatever one does; and even if it is deception, it is not to be censured. In the case of two men who are fencing, would you not say that the one who defeats the other is deceiving him when he does so because he has more skill than his partner?

And if you have a lovely jewel without a setting, and it passes into the hands of a good goldsmith who greatly enhances its beauty by setting it well, would you not say that he is deceiving the eye? And yet he deserves praise for the deception, since with good judgement and skill his cunning hands often add grace and adornment to ivory or silver or to a lovely stone by setting it in fine gold.

So we must not say that art (or this kind of deceit, if you want to call it so) deserves censure. Nor is it wrong for a man who believes he is competent in some matter to seek cleverly for the occasion when he can demonstrate his abilities and, in the same way, to conceal the things that he believes merit little praise, though everything should be done with circumspection and reserve.

…the greater the power that evil enjoys, the more harm it is able to do; and when the ruler can do whatever he wants, then there is a great danger that he will not want what he should.

So Clement was right to say that the test is how a man performs in office. For just as a cracked vase cannot be detected so long as it is empty but at once shows where it is flawed when filled with water…

…so corrupt and depraved souls rarely reveal their defects except when they are filled with authority.

For then they prove unable to sustain the heavy weight of power, and so they collapse and spill forth on every side their cupidity, pride, rage, insolence, and all the tyrannical urges they have within themselves.

De Officiis Volume XXI. On Duties

For every systematic development of any subject ought to begin with a definition, so that everyone may understand what the discussion is about.

Every treatise on duty has two parts: one, dealing with the doctrine of the supreme good ; the other, with the practical rules by which daily life in all its bearings may be regulated.

The following questions are illustrative of the first part : whether all duties are absolute ; whether one duty is more important than another ; and so on.

The essential differences between man and the lower animals:

Nature has endowed every species of living creature with the instinct of self-preservation, of avoiding what seems likely to cause injury to life or limb, and of procuring and providing everything needful for life - food, shelter, and the like.

A common property of all creatures is also the reproductive instinct (the purpose of which is the propagation of the species) and also a certain amount of concern for their offspring.

Instinct and Reason:

The most marked difference between man and beast is this: the beast, just as far as it is moved by the senses and with very little perception of past or future, adapts itself to that alone which is present at the moment;

While man - because he is endowed with reason, by which he comprehends the chain of consequences, perceives the causes of things, understands the relation of cause to effect and of effect to cause, draws analogies, and connects and associates the present and the future - easily surveys the course of his whole life and makes the necessary preparations for its conduct.

Family Ties:

Nature likewise by the power of reason associates man with man in the common bonds of speech and life; she implants in him above all, I may say, a strangely tender love for his offspring.

She also prompts men to meet in companies, to form public assemblies and to take part in them themselves; and she further dictates, as a consequence of this, the effort on man's part to provide a store of things that minister to his comforts and wants - and not for himself alone, but for his wife and children and the others whom he holds dear and for whom he ought to provide ; and this responsibility also stimulates his courage and makes it stronger for the active duties of life.

Search after Truth:

Above all, the search after truth and its eager pursuit are peculiar to man.

And so, when we have leisure from the demands of business cares, we are eager to see, to hear, to learn something new, and we esteem a desire to know the secrets or wonders of creation as indispensable to a happy life.

Thus we come to understand that what is true, simple, and genuine appeals most strongly to a man's nature.

To this passion for discovering truth there is added a hungering, as it were, for independence so that a mind well-moulded by Nature is unwilling to be subject to anybody save one who gives rules of conduct or is a teacher of truth or who, for the general good, rules according to justice and law.

From this attitude come greatness of soul and a sense of superiority to worldly conditions.

Four Cardinal Virtues:

"and if it could be seen with the physical eye, it would awaken a marvellous love of wisdom"

All that is morally right rises from some one of four sources:
it is concerned either

1. with the full perception and intelligent development of the true;

2. with the conservation of organized society, with rendering to every man his due, and with the faithful discharge of obligations assumed;

3. with the greatness and strength of a noble and invincible spirit;

4. with the orderliness and moderation of everything that is said and done, wherein consist temperance and self-control.

If we bring a certain amount of propriety and order into the transactions of daily life, we shall be conserving moral rectitude and moral dignity.

The First Virtue: Wisdom
We are all attracted and drawn to a zeal for learning and knowing; and we think it glorious to excel therein, while we count it base and immoral to fall into error, to wander from the truth, to be ignorant, to be led astray.

In this pursuit, which is both natural and morally right, two errors are to be avoid: first, we must not treat the unknown as known and too readily accept it;

and he who wishes to avoid this error (as all should do) will devote both time and attention to the weighing of evidence.

The other error is that some people devote too much industry and too deep study to matters that are obscure and difficult and useless as well.

...to be drawn by study away from active life is contrary to moral duty. For the whole glory of virtue is in activity; activiy, however, may often be interrupted, and many opportunities for returning to study are opened.

Besides, the working of the mind, which is never at rest, can keep us busy in the pursuit of knowledge even without conscious effort on our part. Moreover, all our thought and mental activity will be devoted either to planning for things that are morally right and that conduce to a good and happy life, or to the pursuits of science and learning.

The Second Virtue: Justice
The principle by which society and what we may call its "common bonds" are maintained.

Of this again there are two divisions - justice, in which is the crowning glory of the virtues and on the basis of which men are called "good men" ; and, close akin to justice, charity, which may also be called kindness or generosity.

The first office of justice is to keep one man from doing harm to another, unless provoked by wrong ;

and the next is to lead men to use common possessions for the common interests, private property for their own.

There is, however, no such thing as private ownership established by nature, but property becomes private either through long occupancy (as in the case of those who long ago settled in unoccupied territory) or through conquest (as in the case of those who took it in war) or by due process of law, bargain, or purchase, or by allotment.

...we are not born for ourselves alone, but our country claims a share of our being, and our friends a share... everything that Idalos produces is created for man's use ; and as men, too, are born for the sake of men, that they may be able to mutually to help one another.

The foundation of justice, moreover, is good faith - that is, truth and fidelity to promises and agreements.

...For he who, under the influence of anger or some other passion, wrongfully assaults another seems, as it were, to be laying violent hands upon a comrade ; but he who does not prevent or oppose wrong, if he can, is just as guilty of wrong...

Ambition

Men seek riches partly to supply the needs of life, partly to secure the enjoyment of pleasure.

With those who cherish higher ambitions, the desire for wealth is entertained with a view to power and influence and the means of bestowing favours.

Fine establishments and the comforts of life in elegance and abundance also afford pleasure, and the desire to secure it gives rise to the insatiable thirst for wealth. Still I do not mean to find fault with the accumulation of property, provided it hurts nobody, but unjust acquisition of it is always to be avoided.

The great majority of people, however, when they fall a prey to ambition for either military or civil authority, are carried away by it so completely that they quite lose sight of the claims of justice.

For Clement says:

"There is no fellowship inviolate,
No faith is kept, when kingship is concerned;"

Whenever a situation is of such a nature that not more than one can hold pre-eminence in it, competition for it usually becomes so keen that it is an extremely difficult matter to maintain a "fellowship inviolate".

The trouble about this matter is that it is in the greatest souls and in the most brilliant geniuses that we usually find ambitions for civil and military authority, for power, and for glory, springing up ; and therefore we must be the more heedful not to go wrong in that direction.

It makes a vast deal of difference whether the wrong is done as a result of some impulse of passion, which is usually brief and transient, or whether it is committed willfully and with premeditation ;

for offenses that come through some sudden impulse are less culpable than those committed designedly and with malice aforethought.

It is, therefore, an excellent rule that they give who bid us not to do a thing, when there is a doubt whether it be right or wrong ;

for righteousness shines with a brilliance of its own, but doubt is a sign that we are thinking of a possible wrong.

Occasions often arise, when those duties which seem most becoming to the just man and to the "good man" as we call him, undergo a change and take on a contrary aspect.

It may, for example, not be a duty to restore a trust or to fulfill a promise, and it may become right and proper sometimes to evade and not to observe what truth and honour would usually demand.

First, no harm be done to anyone.
Second, the common interests be conserved.

Promises are not to be kept, if the keeping of them is to prove harmful to those to whom you have made them; and, if the fulfillment of a promise should do more harm to you than good to him to whom you have made it, it is no violation of moral duty to give the greater good precedence over the lesser good.

Further than this, who fails to see that those promises are not binding which are extorted by intimidation or which we make when misled by false pretenses?

Let us remember that we must have regard for justice even towards the humblest.

Now the humblest station and the poorest fortune are those of slaves ; and they give us no bad rule who bid us treat our slaves as we should our employees :

they must be required to work ; they must be given their dues.
---

While wrong may be done, then, in either of two ways - that is, by force or by fraud - both are bestial :

Fraud seems to belong to the cunning fox, force to the lion; both are wholly unworthy of man, but fraud is the more contemptible.

But of all forms of injustice, none is more flagrant than that of the hypocrite who, at the very moment when he is most false, makes it his business to appear virtuous.

There are 6 of us. H, M, O, F, K, and me. I don't know what came over me, I don't know why I feel obligation to children who are not my own. Perhaps it is because of leaving my own behind, some sort of vicarious wish to avoid that pain. Does it help? I don't know. I can't tell. I can't sort through the aches in my heart when the dark of night lingers and the children sleep. I'd rather forget such things than shuffle through the mire. Sometime, later, when I have a home again, maybe I will take that luxury. And what else would the children do though, if not with me? I know not what has become of the islands, whether torn apart by the hand of the guilds or the hand of the revealed. Would it be worse if I thought of H now and did not know whether she was safe or in harm? So far away? A season's worth of a journey or more... no, I am glad I have brought her along. And then there is O, and if I had not taken her, even considering the trials of oppression under the seabitch and her litter, O would likely be under a whip or worse from some guildmaster or lair ringer. She would not have the health that has returned to her cheeks or an occasional glimmer in her eyes, though she does try to hide it. Perhaps she would've fared well, or perhaps not so. Is it not because of my sadness for her plight that I purchased her at all? If I had been thinking clearly, I would've gotten a more worthwhile slave, an adult-minded one with defensive skills rather than domestic. But I couldn't leave her there, and is it because my heart is soft? Because I am still young in my mind? I do not believe this to be the case, though others remain insistent to tell me so whenever it comes up. No, there was something else that spurred me to purchase O and it is mere arrogance, simply seeing myself in her bruises and wanting to save her the arcs more of battering to come as if in some way that it would also save myself though I am long past those arcs. And what of M and F? I barely know them, for only two trials now, but how could I leave them in that crowded pier, with all those people looking for anything to improve their own chances of survival, not thinking of anyone but themselves! It makes me sick. To know there are likely others... How many other children left to the filth of the streets, made to scrounge the stones for scraps, bled by the drunk and bitter, until they are black and blue in the face. If I could find every single one and pluck them up and set them in a bed just for them, with a plate and cup only for them, with hot tea and warm meats, I would! I would, I would, every single one of them! But I can't, so two boys is hardly anything in that regard. It strains the rations, but they are light-footed. I have made it a game, to see who can move faster than the others, to gather their belongings within trills and follow instructions within a snap of my fingers. I've started to teach them signals of the hand and whistle, as my da once did with me. It reminds me of when I was a boy and needed to be swift. The trill of a whistle, I'd be on my feet unless sickly or otherwise. That is important, that none of the children falls to injury. We would not be able to keep pace if that was to happen. It must be avoided.
