Break Away the Ice

Image
Ashan 8 718, Midday

Location: The Docks

It was meant to be a sort of union among the fisherman, especially those that had boats waiting to be freed. Ashan had started but the ice slowly melted away, and too many of the locals themselves grew impatient with the wait. Enrick himself had been counted among those locals as he too wanted to sail again, to experience the joy of being out on the water while his nets were released and rods cast into the ocean. Yet the ice held the boats captive while the larger ships broke through, cracking the thick layers that crusted the shores they lingered on.

It had been mainly the fishermen that had gathered here To-trial, though some of the sailors and laborers joined in also. They knew well enough that without boats out there, hauls of seafood wouldn't improve until the warmer part of the season occurred. Nobody wanted to wait that long anymore, and so with the gathering of many came a community. One determined to set boats free so Scalvorians could do their part in helping the local fisherman. Even the Merchants Guild had a minor part to play in all of this, as an envoy of their's brought ice picks for newcomers to loan.

"If you're here to help break the ice, the Merchant's Guild is happy to provide you with an ice-pick! Please watch yourself out there when chipping away chunks of the ice, as the waters are still dangerously cold to fall into!" The associate cried out enthusiastically while some already lined up to accept the tool.

Not that he needed one since he bought his own last season, after the freezing weather trapped him here in Scal-town for the while. Enrick walked down the dock to his sloop eagerly, just his coat on to shield against the cold that still lingered. Cylus's chill was still too fresh for the many gathered here, but for some the workout in chipping away ice would also help combat the cold. With a hop on deck of his boat Enrick proceeded to the hold, and opened it to reach for the ice pick within. As much as he would've liked to grab his fishing gear, to-trial was about stepping up in part of the community.

Thus he moved back onto the dock with his back to The Windrunner, ice-pick in hand while he approached the main body of the event. He picked a spot that seemed untouched in comparison to the other spots, and with a glance back to the shore behind him he proceeded to take the pick with two hands. With a heavy throw of his arms Enrick pulled the ice-pick over his form to slam it's point into the ice, a soft grunt heard as the tip already crunched through a layer of ice.

Break Away the Ice

Amaris had really only come to observe the proceedings of the trial. It was not yet warm enough for the ice to melt graciously away and release its hold no the boats on the dock, and as a result, people were taking matters into their own hands. It had been interesting enough to think about, bits of conversation on the matter filtering up into their window while they read. And it had been enough to tempt them outside this trial. They’d ambled over to the docks, perhaps a little more lightly dressed than participants and onlookers as they stood off to the side.

They could understand the impatience, but there was something comical in the way people seemed so eager to leap onto the ice and carve away at the solid form holding their precious boats back. They might have joined if not for the water. It wasn’t that they would have much difficulty with the cold; rather, they’d have difficulty with the aspect of swimming up. The most they’d done was as a small child splashing about in rivers. Anything deeper than that was observed with a silent admiration and wariness.

The mixed blood wondered if perhaps there was any concern for what might be in the water. There were certainly tales of creatures that called the waters around Scalvoris home, and while the ice had likely put them off to some sort of hibernation, would this be like a sort of wake up call for them? They hoped not, for the safety of those taking part. Amusement turned to worry as their brows furrowed, looking on as people grabbed loaned icepicks and headed for the ice.

Break Away the Ice

Enrick plucked as much of the chipped ice as he could away from his first strike, the crack he'd created already promising to look at for such a start. But the ice still proved too thick to celebrate just yet, even with the warmer weather looming overhead; the accumulation of ice proved too layered to just melt away. He took a step back and felt his foot slip away from him, a brief moment spent regaining the balance he almost lost in the instant.

He heard a couple of men nearby snort as though they were trying not to laugh, and with a glance to them he grinned with yellow hues present in his eyes. What a right embarrassing moment that would've been indeed, if he had actually slipped and fallen on his ass. Regardless of the near miss accident he about had the fisherman gripped his ice pick a little more firmly, it's end once more held behind him as he angled the point of the edge. He took a deep breath as his eyes once more darkened to the deep turquoise color like before, and with a slow exhale he heaved his arms up and over his frame.

Then downward so that the blade of the pick once more smashed into the ice beneath it, and therefore resulted in another satisfying crunching sound when it plummeted into the frigid crystal. "Oy, Enrick!" One of his fellow fishermen called out as he started to approach, Enrick himself turned to look and greet the man with a smile. "Whatcha think 'bout all dis eh? Looks like a lotta de community's comin' together."

"Yeah," He remarked with a glance out to the number of people here, "it's about time too. We fishermen need our boats."

"Aye!" The fisher remarked with a hearty chuckle. "And it'll be good to feel the water beneath our feet again!" With that statement the fisher patted Enrick on the shoulder with a few friendly nudges, his own ice pick raised to show his support in the effort before he found a spot relatively close to Enrick's. The half-blood himself couldn't help but smile wholly at the sentiment in the fisher's tone, a bit of brotherhood pride suddenly found as they both started to chip away ice together. Enrick himself readjusted his grip and proceeded to yank a couple of times, a good chunk of ice slowly raked up with a few snaps heard beneath.

It felt so damn good to hear the ice break away beneath them, even if there was a risk of the ice thinning in some places. But that risk was hardly disheartening to the cause for some, Enrick himself definitely wasn't worried of the potential danger since the end goal was freedom on the seas.

Break Away the Ice

Image

Compelled to join by a few invitations to participate with a small cluster of people, Amaris was handed an ice pick and guided to the ice. There wasn’t too much distance for them to close coming from the dock to the ice with their height, lowering themselves carefully. There were soft chuckles as they steadied themselves and took a few test steps forward, likely resembling a newborn deer. They shuffled forward once they were more sure of their footing, hands raised slightly to catch themselves should they fall forward. The mixed blood was almost positive such a thing would happen; they would not be surprised with their coordination.

As if someone had been aware of their thoughts, a hand grabbed hold of theirs and lead them forward with another gripping their forearm. The number of people already on the ice meant it was being broken fast, and much of it was becoming increasingly unstable. They caught the edges of a conversation between fisherman, pleased by the turn out. A smile broke out on the mixed blood’s face as they listened. They could understand the pull to the seas; it was their livelihood, after all. And they must enjoy it somewhat to spent long hours out on the water. One fisherman in particular seemed most enthused, so focused on breaking the ice that he didn’t seem to notice it beginning to crack further under with each strike of his pick. Minute fissures, but it would surely grow at the rate he was going.

“Excuse me,” they called out, “You might want to stand at a different angle.” The guiding hand had left them, now practically stranded. Amaris, however, was more concerned with this man falling into the icy water below. He could, possibly, go into shock if the water was cold enough. Brows furrowed, they took another step forward - and the world tilted. For a moment, they were confused as to why they were no longer looking at ice, but instead the sky before the realization hit them.

To have fallen at all was displeasing, but before a great number of people? Much less pleasing. They would count themselves lucky, though; the ice pick hadn’t been involved in breaking their fall and was instead a few feet away from them. The councilor was soon looking up at worried expression. They’d been down for too long, but they didn’t much want to move again, for fear of further humiliating themselves. Perhaps they could close their eyes and pretend to have fainted. It was a highly uncomfortable position they were in, but it wasn’t like they’d be down the ice forever...maybe.

Break Away the Ice

Image
As both Enrick and his buddy hacked at the ice someone seemed to address the two of them, a beautiful looking woman who somehow stood far taller than Enrick himself. Both men turned to look at her a little surprised at her height, and Enrick's buddy himself had to check the half-blood's size in comparison. By then he couldn't help but whistle at how definite the different truly was, and even so they were both a little curious as to where her concern came from. They were fishermen. As far as they were concerned falling into the water would've been a blessing at this rate, although the cracks behind their feet gave reason to consider.

Rather quickly the two men were warily eyeing the spots they were picked at, and it became plain in Enrick's eyes as they changed to an orange coloration. As wonderful as shattering the ice sounded he didn't want to go for a cold swim, as that would only ruin his Trial and give the other boys something to laugh at later. Which... wasn't hard since the lady herself somehow managed to slip and tumble before them. "Oooo! Shit!" His buddy cooed with wide eyes as Enrick himself stared in awe, disbelief remained in his mind as he took a moment to process what just occurred. The lady just... slipped... and then fell...

Shit indeed.

His buddy couldn't help but stifle hard at his laughs, while Enrick on the other hand dropped his tool and moved to her side. "Damn lass, y' okay?!" He checked with eye color now cerulean instead, admittedly he felt a little bad for the fact the lady had fallen. As funny as it would've been to laugh at, laughter would come later when he knew she were okay. Thus he walked over to her with feet flatly pressed against the ice, which might've looked silly in comparison but saved him from slipping like she did. Once he stood next to her he proceeded to kneel down and offer a hand to help her.

"Sorry mate!! Dat's funny shit roight der!!" The other fisherman couldn't help but nearly bellow now, as though it had been the funniest thing he ever saw.

"Yeah well, y' can laugh 'fter we help her up!!" Enrick urged as he tried to figure out the best way to help her up, least some kind of method that didn't involve both falling over. Maybe if he pulled against her until she rose on her feet, he could keep from slipping onto his ass with the right lean into his knees. First though he needed to make sure she actually felt alright and able to stand, before doing anything else involving the effort of getting her back up. "Can y' stand? Are y' hurt anywhere?"

Sure enough another section of the ice behind Enrick's buddy cracked more, while the man about staggered from laughing too hard.

They had expected being laughed at. It would have been quite odd if they hadn't gotten a few chuckles from someone. They did not, however, think it would be so loud and attention-grabbing, this laughter. Squeezing theirs eyes shut a moment longer, they opened them to see someone had come to check on them. It was the same man they'd spoken to prior to their fall. What a show of themselves they'd made. Nodding slightly, only to wince shortly thereafter, they opted for a vocal response.

"I'm alright, thank you." His friend did not seem to mind laughing at their expense, and for a trill they considered staying down for longer to avoid seeing the glee on his face. But soon enough, the man above them seemed to make an attempt to get them to stand. "I should be able to stand; just a little bump on the head, I think." The smile they offered was shaky at best, sure there was something like a blush on their cheeks if the warmth there was anything to go by. Embarrassment seemed to be a common theme in their life, and for once they were grateful that it wasn't something else. A dark cloud over their previously sunny thoughts, they turned their attention instead to getting upright.

They had been right in it being no more than a small bump to the head, sitting up with little dizziness and effort. "So sorry to have taken you away from the festivities with my clumsiness." It was a nervous chuckle that followed, with the slight dip of their head.

Enrick didn't know if he were being a little too untoward when he checked the lady's head, but he felt it necessary to check anyways even with lack of real medical experience. A rough callused hand patted the top of her skull, very lightly, to see her overall reaction and whether or not anything seemed delayed. The lady proved responsive well enough so he could refrain from bothering her any further physically, although he felt the need to make sure she remained okay before attempting to help with the lift. "Didn't seem like y' too banged up. Ya sure y' feel alright t'ough? Nothin' we should admit y' t' te Order for?" He inquired as another crack caught his attention, his cerulean eyes brought over to the source of the sound.

His buddy who had laughed so hard worked on regulating his breathing, still too wrapped up in the aspect of a funny moment recapped in his head. But when Enrick looked from the fisherman to beneath his feet, the hues turned to a deep orange color when he realized what was about to happen. "Oy! Move!" He beckoned the man as more of the ice beneath him cracked further, with a more lighter series of cracks as the ice beneath him started to give way. At that point the fisherman was unable to react accordingly, the residual mirth suddenly replaced with awe as he looked down at his feet. Enrick did his best to move but the moment he made the first step, the ice crumbled underneath and gave way to the fisherman.

Thus with a loud "Oh shyte," hollered out the man plummeted into the slushy ice water below. Enrick's steps brought him close to where the hole was, however more of the ice seemed to chip away as the fisherman bobbed and clawed for the surface. "Shyte!! Merry mother o' Immortals, it's fekkin' cold!!"

"Hang on mate, hang on!" Enrick was coming for sure but he needed be on more solid ice, which proved to become increasingly difficult as the layers continued to crack further across the bay. Shit! The half-breed moved to a bend onto his knees as he reached as far as he could, the fisherman's ice cold and wet hands eagerly gripping and slipping as he floundered. The rest of those gathered could see what had occurred, and while some moved to hurry and provide assistance, the shattering of the ice caps warranted for them to reconsider where they walked. The ice along the shoreline was breaking.

"Yes, I am certain there is no need for a trip to the Order - thank you, though." Their embarrassment would only be intensified if they had to run into Faith at the Order and explain why it was they were there. 'Just a bump on the head from falling down like a moron' - oh, she'll love that. They continued to smile as the man helped them up, until it was that the collective attention of the festivities was turned to the cracking ice that Amaris had warned of before.

The fisherman that had laughed at them previously soon had his own spill into the icy water - that couldn't be good. The mixed blood, if they had a spiteful bone in their body, might have laughed. However, they had no spite and only concern and might very well have run forward if not for the progression of the cracking ice. The turnout that had once been seen as a boon was now not so much. With the pressure on the ice of picks and weight of bodies, it was no surprise that it would have given way.

Amaris frowned, turning their attention back to the man in the water and his friend who had helped them. Gingerly watching their step, they made haste as best they could to the man until they got close enough to where the ice splintered off into webbed cracks before they stopped. Having all their weight supported in one spot would only cause the ice to break more, and thus they had the bright idea of perhaps, well - expanding the surface area. They got down first to their knees, then onto their stomach and crawling forward as quickly as they could. When at last they'd reached where the man had fallen in and was currently floundering about, should they get there along with anyone else, they would attempt to pull him out with assistance.

Break Away the Ice

Image
Both he and the lady were determined to try and save his fisherman buddy from the freezing cold, as already the man appeared to pale with a blue tint at the surface of his skin. The longer they took made the situation even worse due to the fact the ice was breaking, as even Enrick both heard and felt the ice underneath him crack away. "We gotcha mate, we gotcha just hang on!" He stressed as both he and the woman seemed to get a better grip on the fisherman, each person locking both hands on each of the man's arm. At that point time was essentially crucial, or else they two would find their position gone as the ice chipped away. He looked to the lady with turquoise in his eyes, a quick nod made as he proved ready to respond with her next move.

"Ready, and heave!" He called out just to help make the timing with them more in sync, as he pulled first upward and then over to attempt dragging the man onto dry land. Somehow it worked even though the ice beneath him started to crush and buckle away, while the rest of those along the shoreline started to scramble and make for the beach. A few others close by came to help scoop the fisherman up by the arms, carrying him away as Enrick shepherded the lady ahead of him first and foremost. He quickly bent over to grapple his ice pick as they moved along, his eyes turned a brightly bronzed orange color as more ice crumbled apart behind him.

"Go, go! Oi'm roi behind ya!" He assured the woman as they moved along in an earnest fashion, while more of the layered crystal snapped and popped throughout the docks and harbor. The whole body of ice seemed to pop and grind as though it were breathing, as if the very ocean beneath exhaled a sigh in finding release. People on the shore watched in awe as the event unfolded, and many of the locals started to cheer at what had been accomplished. Those that were still stragglers on the ice were closer to safety thankfully, as large chunks started to drift apart and on out into the bay. Enrick followed along after the lady until they reached the shore, a little more able to relax once he looked over his shoulder to see they were in the clear at that point.

Holy shit! Enrick had never in his life expected to be caught up in a situation like that, and now that he was he definitely didn't want to find himself there ever again. Quickly he looked to his fellow fisherman who had been given blankets and wrapped all in their layers, his paled expression focused on Amaris who had been there to help save him. "Thanks!" He muttered consistently with his constant shivers, now that the three were safe and sound from the breaking ice that chipped away.

I wouldn’t have thought a story about breaking ice would have been interesting but you surprised me. You added some humor and even a hint of danger into what one would think was a chore. I’m glad he was successful in his endeavor and can’t wait to see what other roadblocks he encounters on his future adventures. Enjoy your rewards.

I liked the premise for Amaris being in the thread. She was just an onlooker who found a way to contribute and a life was potentially saved. I particularly enjoyed the mention of wanting to avoid an embarrassing visit to Faith. Sometimes I couldn’t figure out who was being referred to, but it didn’t detract from understanding what was going on J Enjoy your rewards.
