Nalin tells Enrick the bad news.

Previously the stronghold of the Pirate Lords, Almund is a thriving township with a dark side. With houses made from the wooden bodies of decommissioned ships, there are many opportunities here, coupled with many dangers. Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap!

Nalin looked at Lavender, she had been crying all trial and the trial before that. They had been sitting in their bed almost the entire time. He just sighed and pat her head. Petting her slowly trying to help her calm down, words weren't going to help right now, then wouldn't, not for what they had found just trials before. Upon his skin a black splotch like a drop of splattered paint had appeared at his chest.

He'd been running a high fever a few trials before that and had to take a few trials off of work. He had included to-trial into those days off. It didn't seem to be an issue though, he rarely took time off, so they were more than happy to give him the time off.

Lavender just started crying harder again, and put her face into his chest. He just smiled and laughed, "I sick one. Why you cry my Little Flower?" He moved her off his chest and moved some hair out of her face. He smiled at her and gave her a slow kiss. When he pulled away, her face showed just how shocked and embarrassed she was. He chuckled a bit.

"Like Lavender better this way." He laced his fingers through her hair once more. "Can't stay sad. Must go on. We don't know when it take me. Must prepare for that." He kissed her forehead and hugged her close. "I preserve for you. You are my light, remember that Little flower." He hugged her tighter and she slowly started to hug back. They stayed there for a few bits, just like that, in the silence. Until she finally pulled away and gave him as big of a smile as she could manage.

"Now... We have friend we must tell... want to come with?" He looked down at her with a smile. She froze a moment, but slowly nodded, her hand clinging to the edge of his shirt. He smiled, he knew that she didn't really want to, but she wanted to be with him as much as possible too. "Good. Get ready."

After some time, they were walking out the door and locking up, walking out in the fresh air of Ashan. Even with how bright out it seemed, to the siblings, they felt it was all wrong, that it should be raining, or something, just to fit their mood better. Not that they could help it.

Slowly they made their way to the docks. Lavender clinging to Nalin, today, she wasn't going to start any mischief. She couldn't even if she wanted to, Nalin was clinging to her a little harder than he meant to. He smiled meekly as they eventually made it to their destination. He looked around and didn't immediately see who he was looking for.

But Lav elbowed Nalin a bit and pointed to their left down the dock. Enrick seemed to be coming in for the day, as late in the day as it was, at least that's what Nalin hoped. Enrick was surrounded by his fishing buddies though. He bit his lip and hesitated. Should he really interrupt what seemed like a good day with the bad news that he was about to dispose onto Enrick?

Lavender on the other hand was already trying to drag Nalin to Enrick though. "Alright, alright.." He laughed a little, but his smile weak as he started walking down the pier and waving, hoping to get Enrick attention. Nalin was tall enough and pale enough that he might. But, only if Enrick saw them in the corner of his eye or looked up.

It had been a long but productive Trial for Enrick as he and a bunch of other fishermen finished their routine, each satisfied to have yet again earned a hard Trial's worth of coin now it was over. All of their hauls had been stored and distributed to supply the rest of the town, and thus the men were happy to celebrate like they normally would. "Drinks 're on me booooys." One of the more bearded and gruff men stated as the rest all cheered, Enrick of course simply grinned as they conversed with one another.

"Ey, Rick. Tink yer chummy boyfriend's comin'." Another murmured as he felt a elbow nudge him at the side, which drew Enrick's attention first to the fisherman that mentioned it. When he followed the direction of the stare and saw Nalin down at the end of the dock, he scoffed and meagerly gave a rough punch on the man's shoulder.

"Piss off barnacle breath." He reciprocated as a few laughed at the tease, while Enrick's eyes turned from violet to silver hues shortly after. "Oi'm gonna see what's up mates, Oi'll catch up wit' ya later."

"Oh sure, roi after ye git done flirtin' with him."

"Hey, don't overlook those kissy faces he makes ya this time."

"Soooood off!" He reciprocated with a slightly wide smile at them, an offensive gesture waved to them as he walked away from the group. Nalin seemed to be heavily reliant on Lavender for some reason, as she seemed to tug him along while he meekly followed behind her. Why? His eyebrows furrowed some while silver eyes narrowed on the man, his pace lessened some when his mind began to wonder what could be wrong. Did the man hurt himself somehow? "Nalin?" He called out as they slowly approached his position, which he then closed the distance between them curiously.

"Sur... prised t' see ya here mate," He gestured a friendly if not confused wave to the two, "caught me at a good time too really." It was then he realized Nalin seemed to be sweating a lot actually, as though he were sickly or perhaps hurt in some way. That's when the silver hues of his eyes transitioned to a cerulean color, "Are y' doin' okay??" He proceeded to ask with a bit of concern.

Lavender looked up at Enrick, even the look in her eyes could have told him something was wrong as she pushed Nalin closer to him. "Woah there Lavender, haha.." He laughed softly, slowly standing on his own as he looked over to Enrick with as good of a smile as he could give him. It was a service smile. One someone wore when they were pretending everything is okay.

"Hi Enrick. Ah... Yeah... Came lookin.. need talk." He blinked and rubbed the back of his neck and then jumped when Enrick asked him if he was okay. His eyes swimming with unsureness on how to answer that question. He just gave another smile, "Had sick past trials. Better n...oooooowww" He turned around and glared at Lavender who'd just elbowed him in the side, really hard.

Nalin frowned at her. She signed at him angrily. "Don't you feed him niceties when you came here to tell him the bad news. You consider him a friend? Don't you dare try to butter this up. Enrick's a big boy. He can handle it." She shoved him by the shoulder.

Nalin laughed weakly and shook his head and signed back. "Can't just tell him here."

"Oh yes you can!"

Lavender just glared at him holding her hands out to Enrick as if she was trying to tell him to just go ahead and tell Enrick what was up. Nalin shook his head and looked at Enrick and sighs. "Can... talk on your ship?" Nalin's request seemed to be weighted with what was on Nalin's mind. And it was obvious by Lavender's stomp that she was impatient and wished that she could tell Enrick herself. She looked like she'd been crying too, her eyes puffy and red. Whatever it was that they had to tell them, it most likely wasn't good.

He held a vacant but weak smile to the two now that he stood in their presence, his eyes an arrangement of silver and bronze slivers in his cerulean hues. It seemed the man had been sick for the past few trials which, in retrospect, wasn't usually like the man to say the least. As far back he could remember in their friendship, Nalin's 'sick' trials were never as harsh as whatever struck him recently. Nevertheless Enrick didn't question him, at least not initially, when Nalin tried to hide the gravity of seriousness.

Yet even then there was one who's attitude never changed, and she made it quite clear that something was very wrong. First she elbowed her older brother and, in time, wound up fallen in argumentative gesture with him right afterwards. The fisherman could only watch what unfolded before him, still unsure of what was going on at this point. He'd been around the two long enough to slightly understand a few of their signs, but even then the conversation between them proved far to fast to keep up with. "Oookaay," He quietly thought to himself eyes a full bronze, "so clearly Lav's signin' frantically... Some o' it seems pretty serious too. So what did Oi do?"

Enrick honestly wasn't sure when he thought about it. Could it have been a bad batch of lobster or sea food he sent them? He'd sometimes chip anything extra their way, just to help them out with food in case times were tough for them. It didn't couldn't have been though as... he hadn't really hauled a decent shipment in to provide such a care package, so maybe it was the fact he'd probably been slacking and they needed more? No. That wasn't it either. "Fek woman," He quietly bit his lower lip, "certainly not known fer niceties fer sure." He'd thought in observation when she relentlessly nudged Nalin forward.

Finally the silence brokered and Nalin had asked if they could talk on his ship, a request not so unusual given that they were generally welcomed guests. "Sure." He told them with a look past the two down a certain dock they'd passed. "Just down t'is way... here." With the addition of the word he buckled his knees and grabbed Nalin by an arm, determined to help the man out as they would walk towards his sloop just down the dock. With The Windrunner quickly in sight Enrick made sure Nalin was the first to step onto the boat, his own feet second to follow once his friend was safely aboard. With hand held to Lavender he also offered to help her onto the sloop if she opted to, beyond that he proceeded to scoot a empty crate on deck closer to them. Something for Nalin to sit on while they were there really.

Once the two were situated and comfortable Enrick would lean into the mast of his ship, somewhat comfortable himself as he waited to hear what the big news was.

Nalin, who would have normally been the one to grab and lead Enrick was surprised when Enrick actually grabbed him. After all this time, he'd kind of taken the man as one that wasn't much for the touchy feely parts of relationships. Which had been just fine with him.

Lavender followed them, giving Nalin looks the entire way, but Nalin just ignored them as they followed their friends lead. Nalin let Enrick help him onto the boat, and Lavender, probably to Enrick's surprise also let him help her onto the boat, even giving him a smile. The siblings sat together, though oddly, there was a whole scene that Lavender seemed to make sure that she was on his right side and not his left side.

Nalin sighed and looked up to Enrick with a small smile. But slowly it faded as the silence just sat there. Lavender kept elbowing him motioning at Enrick. He groaned after about the tenth time she did it.

"FINE!" He sighed and looked down. "Enrick.." Slowly he looked back up. "We have.. " Lavender elbowed him. "I... I have bad news.." He took a few slow and deep breaths before looking to him. "Have.... fatal illness."

Lavender just sat there, not looking up at Enrick, laying her head on her brother's shoulder and taking his hand and squeezing it. "There no... tell when take me.. No way know." His voice shook and he looked down at the planks. This was.. quite unusual for one that was so adamant normally about making eye contact. "Had... to tell you.. Have questions... can ask.. try to answer best can.." Squeezing his sisters hand, maybe a little too hard he just sat there, looking hopeless. One word that didn't seem to describe Nalin up until just this moment.

From the way the both of them acted once they were situated on his boat, Enrick could clearly see that something heavy was about to be said. Whatever it was though certainly weighed heavy on them more than him, and at first when Nalin proceeded to finally spill the beans; the fisherman merely stood there lost and confused.

A fatal illness? What was this illness he spoke of? How was it fatal?

Already questions flooded through his mind as his eyes turned from their bronze hue to the cerulean colors. By now Nalin and Lav should already know what most of the colors meant, when it came to the reflection of his feelings towards a particular subject. They had spent several Arcs as friends albeit on terms that mutually benefited them, and the main benefactor being the kindness treatment shared between them.

That didn't mean Enrick lacked feelings towards the man of course, to be fair he actually grew to appreciate Nalin and his little sister; even if they had unusual tendencies to be affectionate toward one another. But a fatal illness that could just as well end his life? At any given moment? What would happen to Lavender afterwards? Who would be around to keep her safe if he were to pass away?

The vacant if not confused grin became sullen and troubled, his eyes directed away from the two revealed just how uncomfortable he really became. "Well... shyte." He murmured a little unsoundly with a scratch at the back of his neck. What did Enrick have to say about this illness? He fell completely silent as it all just sort of sunk in, somehow he strangely accepted the situation just as well. As cruel as it sounded he'd never been one to linger on such problems for long, probably because it was a stark contrast to his own nature where he lived almost carefree. Almost.

"Uh... Well what is it? Do y' know?" He started off with an anxious tone in his voice, his eyes the combination of cerulean and bronze now. "Can't y' fight it? Overcome it somehow? What 'bout Lav too? What's t' be done otherwise if..." He couldn't finish the sentence even if the outcome seemed possible...

If Nalin died from this sickness.

They just sat there in the silence. Nalin let Enrick take it all in. Though he almost laughed when his friend cussed and left it at that for a few trills before continuing.

"If I die?" Nalin went ahead and finished Enrick's sentence and took a slow and deep breath before looking up to the sky, Lavender just looked like she was going to break down into tears again as she clung to her brother's arm. He slowly tapped her hands though to get her to get off of him. He looked around to the other ships to make sure that they were pretty obscured and then took off his shirt. Sighing a bit as he revealed the the black spot on his chest just over his left peck, it looked like burned skin, dehydrated and the edges seemed to kind of flake a bit. It wasn't a pleasant sight, but it was obvious that Nalin needed it to help explain.

Pointing to it, he looked to Enrick. "Ink Bloom. Passed through blood line.. only thing known... really difficult disease. Skin in black or around can feel like burning, can cause sickness, sweating, and from remembrance, irregular sleep, and blackouts. More symptoms as well, but can't remember all at moment. Can last arcs, or can progress rapid. No real rhyme reason to disease. Can treat symptoms, but not illness itself far as known." He clears his throat and puts his hand down.

"Was hoping.... if anything happen... anything... Enrick might help... we have... other problems haven't ... informed of.." He stopped when Lavender grabbed his thigh and shook her head no vigorously. She looked scared.

Nalin shook his head. "Exactly why need ask Lavender." She hadn't even moved her hands, but it was like Nalin was reading her mind. He pet her head slowly and looked to Enrick. "Might well tell everything now that cat out of proverbial bag no?" He was trying to smile for his friend, but it was obvious that things were less okay than things had seemed to be in the Marit household.

It truly felt uncomfortable to hear Nalin say those few words. 'If I die' wasn't exactly the sort of scenario that Enrick wanted to entertain, probably because put those tied to Nalin in a difficult position. Especially his sister Lavender. Yet seeing Nalin just take a deep breath and remain there, somehow the fisherman could tell he'd already thought this through.

But was he really just going to accept it? Going down from an illness was never the most considerable or even enlightening way to go, Enrick at least figured he'd hopefully grow old enough to just slip away in his sleep. That'd be the sort of death a person could live satisfied with. Somehow even in the uncertainty the fisherman couldn't help but admire Nalin's bravery, even if it seemed foolish to believe his light would go out so soon. Lavender also seemed to try and bear the grim news to the best of her abilities, but Enrick could already tell the poor girl had been crying her eyes out.

Such a tragic thing. She must really love her brother to shed so many tears, Enrick himself could only wonder what the experience was like. Then of course after a quick look around to make sure no one in the vicinity could see, Nalin proceeded to remove his shirt to reveal just what exactly the sickness was. Ink Bloom he called it. It certainly didn't look like an appealing sort of illness to endure, and in light of the details given it seemed to be hereditary. Passed through generations of blood line, meant to plague the unfortunate family like a vicious cycle.

"Shit." He couldn't help but emphasize as the amount of discomfort made him slightly cringe, his posture changed from a lean into the mast to a hand propped against it. How uncomfortable did that have to really feel? Almost instinctively Enrick scratched at his chest a little, his cerulean eyes briefly fallen to the deck of his sloop afterwards. "So it's terminal then..." He reluctantly admitted with a bite of his lower lip, the same eyes now on Nalin and Lavender as he patted fingers against the wood anxiously.

It then seemed as though Nalin also wanted to ask for help with something, however at that point Lavender determined it best to refuse beyond that point. Why? Enrick had been their friend for a few arcs now, and while he certainly wasn't aware of all their problems; he definitely wasn't going to turn a back to them now.

"Let's hear it mate." He urged the pale man to continue after a moment of consideration, unsure of whatever role he'd play in this favor Nalin had to ask of him.

The older brother just sat there looking at Enrick, Lavender was shaking him as if pleading him not to involve Enrick in what might be the worst part of their lives. But, Nalin knew that it had been too long that he hadn't informed his friend about this. Honestly, he should have told his friend earlier than this.

The main thing that Nalin was watching was Enrick's eyes. Those were his biggest tell. It was obvious that this whole thing was making his friend anxious, just his movements alone told him that, but what he wanted to know was if Enrick was really ready for this information. The fleck in Enrick's eyes that told Nalin that he was curious yet unsure was enough for Nalin at this point.

He took a deep breath and nodded. "Need you promise help Lavender." He started, taking a slow deep breath, taking his sister's hand, causing her to widen her eyes. Shaking her head no vigorously. "Lavender... STOP." He turned his head as he said the word. He was glaring at her. "NOT a CHILD. Now.. stop." She huffed and her eyes watered. She looked down at his hands in hers and just gripped it harder and nodded. "Thank you." He smiled softly after a moment before looking to Enrick.

"Man named Tarrith Marrit.... After us. After Lavender." He let that sink in for a moment. Enrick would no doubt make the connection that the man was part of their family. He took a moment but if Enrick started to ask anything Nalin would put up a hand with one finger, telling him to wait for the details.

"This man... our father... want revenge. He want Lavender... take her for own... kill us both like killed mother." For the first time since Enrick had met the man, Nalin actually looked like he might break down. This was more than not being able to find Lavender when they first met, this was something that had been haunting both of them for a long time. Lavender was actually shaking as she now used both her hands to hold Nalin's one.

"This man... Foul.. monstrous... harmed... beat.. Lavender as child... and... tried... many things.. on both us." His took a slow deep breath, closing his eyes for a moment before looking once more. "He.. must not have her. Ever. Protect her with life. I will do that... and more. Will break moral code if have to." Something vile flashed in Nalin's eyes, something that said he wasn't kidding.

Partially Enrick understood that he bit off more than he could chew, already it felt as though he had heard enough with this whole disease bomb. By that point he would've rather'd provide condolences and wished Nalin the best, that is of course if the fisherman would've rather discredit several arcs of friendship. Which surprisingly he didn't. It somehow didn't sit well with him to think like that, in regards to the pale adult and his younger sibling. Except what he had to hear next didn't sit well either, as it seemed as though what came next would be the possible inquiry of favors. Help Lavender he managed to say, only to instill a denial most urgent on her part.

Enrick himself didn't want to impose on that request either but, after seeing Nalin reprimand her seriously, somehow he knew this wasn't something he could just turn his back to. The silver flecks filled into an orange as his cerulean eyes remained on them, if only for a couple of Bits before they saturated back into the silver color they flourished from. It sounded as though they were also in hiding from someone, a particular person in question as they shared a common quality with one another. Marrit? Wait a damn Trill. Was that not... It was. Narrowed eyes widened as the speculation led to where Nalin needed it to, and sure enough the sickly man had reason to elaborate more on the matter.

"No shyte?... Damn...." Was all Enrick could say in response at first, as he listened to the problem that the two carried on their shoulders. He could see the anxiety in Nalin's posture as the man almost looked broken, on the verge of tears as he further elaborated their history in broken sentences. Ultimately a lot more orange spanned in the range of his eye color as Enrick saw the spite in Nalin, a somber expression on his face as he remained still and silent for the most part. From what he understood their father had been a vile and abusive man, intending to claim the younger sister as his own for... for what though? Blood bound these three together but in reality, family wasn't composed of shared blood in the end. What their father wanted seemed truly foul and loathsome, and even Enrick himself couldn't help but scorn the man for his decisions.

Somehow even though it went against his own usual code, Enrick couldn't refuse a friend in need when that seemed at it's greatest. Reluctantly after he seemed to consider everything, his eyes narrowed as he looked intently on both Nalin and Lavender with realization. They're compassionate if not very affectionate ways of displaying their love... How many times did Enrick disregard this because he felt it awkward and not his business? Far too many to catch on beforehand, but now that he heard the story of the Marrit family everything made sense. "Hoooold te fek up!" He about practically jumped onto his feet from leaning against the pole, the hues in his eyes a blackened deeply as he stared at the both of them hard. "Yer Pa... did things.... And y' both tend t'.... 're ye both?..." Not that he was judging them honestly, just completely caught off guard with what he just came to figure out at last.

"Oh... M' fekkin' Gods." He sighed after whether or not they'd confirm his suspicion, as it was already clear he caught on with the dynamics involved. Quite blatantly he turned around and walked to the other side of his sloop, his hands planted on the rail as he leaned over it; his attention brought to the sunset as he puffed his cheeks to slowly breathe out through his lips.
