[Order of the Adunih] Healing Hurts

Image
Maxine was quick to brush off Lavana's appreciation. Her own survival had quite literally depended on the Mortal Born's actions the trial before, and there were instances where Max believed Lavana had foolishly almost forfeited her own life to see the Rusalka through. That reality weighed strangely on her. Yet rather than ponder further on it, she was distracted by the Mortal Born's find.

"No way," she breathed with brow raised. Sure enough though, the mediocre sword that once belonged to her slain childhood friend was presented and Max didn't miss a beat. She gladly accepted its return and secured it back upon her person with a grin. "Where'd you find it?!" She shook her head. "Thank you." The weapon brought her thoughts back to a dark place. Mostly, she was thinking about what exactly she'd like to do with it now that she had it back in her possession. Her eyes lifted to settle on Sephira.

The suggestion there would be an "official investigation" was a notion that only made Max's smile turn to a sneer. Who would conduct it? The Element group that was its very focus? The Council who had sanctioned the forsaken festivities leading up to the kidnappings? As far as she was concerned, no one in the Scalvoris government could be trusted. Her contemptuous grin diminished when Sephira made her troubling point. No one seemed to know just how deep the cultists' corruption ran throughout the island. If it could infect the military, there was no one to say it didn't touch the Merchant Guild or the Academy as well. No one could be trusted. In that sense, Max's mentality hadn't been altered in the slightest.

Any rebuttal she'd had in mind was vanquished by a new stranger's arrival. Faith was a woman nearly the polar opposite from Maxine. She was a bit shorter, her demeanor one of grace and control, and from her emanated a mood of composure and compassion that had certainly been lost from the room the moment the Rusalka had awoken. Other faces in the room seemed to clearly acknowledge the woman's presence. In some capacity Faith must've been of some renown in Scalvoris Town, but to Max, she was just another healer unlikely to give her what she felt she needed. That didn't mean she'd deny the help while it was offered.

"Thank you, Faith," she responded simply, her brow knitting slightly as she transitioned from restrained anger to attempting to remember Faith's instructions. In this instance she relented to the healer's will with a nod, consenting to any desired inspection of her most grievous injury. She seemed to perk up a bit when Faith asked the exact question she'd been hoping for. "If what you have is stronger than liquor, yes please." Whether or not Faith would entertain her request was up for debate. It was worth the shot nonetheless.

Kura's arrival had a different effect. When Max became aware of her presence, she felt the rare inclination to listen rather than speak. The Councilwoman might've had better insight into what exactly had transpired the trial before. The Mauve Maiden and its captain had merited the Rusalka's suspicions. However, given the fact the Elements had been the true, immediate threat that night, she felt more like she'd fallen victim to a bait and switch. It looked like the Mauve Maiden had been posed in that harbor like a scapegoat for the premeditated crimes. Then again, maybe there was indeed a connection. The complexity of the crew's involvement was going over Max's head. Kura could hunt for alternative offenders all she wanted. Max would be sated first with the spilling of Element blood.

The woman that seemed to have followed Kura into the room provided a new perspective that the Mixed Race had failed to consider. Despite how in many ways it had felt like a loss, their battles had been a concise victory. Each of the women had performed at their highest levels. One might've gone as far as to say the very best versions of themselves had been present in that warehouse, even with all the killing that occurred. They had survived against great odds. The decimation of the cultists that had kidnapped them was something to be celebrated. At mention of Earth Mask's escape though, Max felt like doing anything but. A shiver ran down her spine and she set her jaw.

An island-wide hunt? That's not a half bad idea...

Maxine was contemplating how to execute such a feat when she realized a new tension had filled the room. This time it was fiercely between Sephira and Lavana, the latter of which had apparently once gone by the alias Alva. She reached over and snatched the bottle of rum from her friend's hand. Sephira's voice had been cold as the glacial chunks floating about the island. Max looked awkwardly away from the pair, tipping the bottle back to her lips to take a long drink from what remained. The Mortal Born hadn't lied to her since the moment they met. Not about her name, not about her family or where she was from. Not once. Lavana would find naught but a shrug from her when her gaze looked for comfort. It likely wasn't helpful the Mortal Born had also hinted at the murder of Sylvia Macklin, the Elements' missing and somewhat beloved receptionist.

"We did what we were forced to do," Max half-lied to provide extra cover for Lavana's emotion-induced confession. She couldn't defend her false identity, but perhaps she could steer the narrative again to ensure no one had ideas about throwing her friend in an Element owned prison cell. If Maxine wasn't already set off, that turn of events would certainly put her on one hell of a bloody spree. Her head turned to find the Councilwoman. "Tell me at least one of your connections has a lead on our mutual friend Earth Mask." Her eyes on Kura darkened something down-right sinister. "I'd like to find him and make sure his second meeting with death takes. Permanently."

Faith could not help but smile as Kura and Cally pointed out the cold, hard statistics to them. "It seems to me," the quiet woman spoke, her voice soft, "that what you have done this night is equivalent to a healer finding a disease in a patient. It isn't comfortable, it's often painful and it is never, ever pleasant. But," she said, her gaze earnest. More than any of them, she looked at Sephira, for reasons Kura would understand if no one else, "once diagnosed, identified, you've allowed the possibility that it can be cured without the death of the whole. Ignorance is where this kind of disease lives, and you've shone a light on it." There was no doubt in Faith's mind that being an Element would be harder because of what these people had done. But if the existing Elements gave up now? Well, the disease would have won. "The people that did this weren't Elements. They were cultists posing as Elements. You just need to cut out the infection, not amputate the limb." Faith gave ever such a slight shrug. "The limb holds the sword that protects us, after all. It isn't the pin that's a disgrace. It has been used by people who had no right to use it. But there are still those who do" She smiled slightly at Seph and then got on with her job.

Then, she looked at the injuries. Kura's, she knew of old and her healing wasn't going to help that. So, she glanced at Cally and smiled, then turned to the most injured one, first. Lavana. Although the woman Max had a nasty injury, Lavana was more injured all over and that could lead to a lot worse in terms of the risk of infection and so on. "Alright, lets have a look at you. While I do this, there will be a sort of green mist around me, and focused on my hands. It's Moseke's blessing, allowing me to heal you. With your permission?" Assuming that she got it, the diminutive young woman first of all tended to Lavana, a slight green mist first appearing round her and then concentrating in her hands, specifically her fingertips. She smiled slightly and, as she worked, she applied a cooling, pain reducing salve. After a short while, the mist released and the wounds began to heal. It took a few moments, but after a while, the majority, though not all, of Lavana's wounds were healed.

Then, she moved to Max and she smiled slightly. "Stronger than liquor? I'm afraid not. But I can give that a go with your foot. It doesn't always work and it won't work completely, but it will speed it up significantly, with your permission?" If Max allowed it, Faith would concentrate for a few moments and, again, the green mist started and then, swirling around her fingers, she touched it to Max's foot and concentrated, coaxing the cells to heal more quickly. She looked at the woman and checked that she was alright, because in fairness that would be a very strange sensation, so concentrated in one area and offered her a seat if needed. Rummaging in her medical bag, she pulled a small bottle of rum and handed it to her. "I'm afraid that might feel quite peculiar. But it is healing in a single area."

Finally, the same thing to Sephira, and here Faith had to work more carefully, coaxing the cells together with a prayer to Moseke and thanks for what She had given Her humble servant and then, any further minor stitching which was needed. Small and careful movements, because it was important that there was minimal, or no, scarring.

By the time she was done, her head was thumping, but she ignored it and turned to Kura with a raised eyebrow. "May I?" Kura had cuts and abrasions, after all. Now that there were no other injuries in the room, she thought that the Daughter of Karem might allow her to heal her. If she did, Faith would, without hesitation. But she would do nothing without consent.

As she worked, they spoke and, once she was done, Faith spoke. "I do not know if it is of any help, but I can speak to any of those who have died this trial, at the place of their death. Maybe some of these cultists can give information on this Earth Mask?" Faith shrugged slightly and smiled at them, though mostly at Kura and Sephira. "If it would be of any use, I will gladly do so."

FYI Faith is using the following ability on all:
Similar to Sevrath's Will, the user is capable of focusing divine energy into a moderate injury (Deep cuts, burns, moderately sized puncture wounds, etc.) and coax the cells into healing. This ability requires a few events to "convince" the cells to heal, and even then they may move slowly. This ability does not weaken the character as another, more powerful healing ability would, however, the character is unable to heal major injuries. When this ability is in use, a pale green, yellow light emits from the character's skin like a mist and is focused towards the palms and fingers where it is released upon contact of another individual's flesh. Multiple uses of this ability for long periods of time will cause headaches and fatigue.

She's also using her Capstone Ability:
Faith is able to perform surgery to such a level that she can stitch in such a way as to leave no scars at all. The wound itself, once tended to by her, is closed and her stitches do not open, do not pull or get infected and leave no scar. This means that pain is reduced enormously for the patient and healing time is cut down to a very short space of time.

When Lavana brought up the possibility that the cult attack had actually been aimed at the Elements, Kura thought for a moment, then shook her head. "That would mean they intended to be exposed, which I don't think is the case. They'll take advantage of it, though." she said in response to the elements speculation. "If the earth elements were coerced, I think we'll still be able to find out." she said, before looking over at Faith. "How much do you need to be able to call back a spirit for a Q&A session, lass?" she asked, her tone curious.

When Faith offered to heal her, Kura nodded cheerfully. "Please, lass. I've got a bit of a headache and my hand hurts somethin' fierce." she said, laughing slightly. Then the issue of Lavana's real name came up and Cally looked around wide eyed in surprise at the sudden outburst from Lavana. "Sephira, it wasn't personal. Mortalborn tend to lean towards hidin' their nature by default, especially in areas where they aren't established." she said, shrugging slightly. "It's somethin' of a survival technique with us. Not everyone is friendly to the Immortals, after all, and even those that are, they aren't friendly to every Immortal." she said, her tone calm.

At Faith's offer, Kura nodded. "I don't have a lead yet, Max, I've only been conscious for an hour or so. But if you're willin' to talk to the departed cultists for us, lass, then you can likely give us our best leads." she said, her tone intent.

[Order of the Adunih] Healing Hurts

Image
Sephira pinched her eyes closed and placed her fingers to her temple. Her head was pounding and Lavana’s tirade was doing nothing to quell the pain. She nearly ignored the woman until, that is until she insulted the Element’s pin at the mage’s collar.

“It’s not a disgrace.” Sephira replied softly, almost to herself before reaching into her breeches pocket to pull out the Onyx Element’s pin that the acting Militant had given her. Thorst Fall had placed a great deal of faith in her and she did not plan to let her down.

Faith spoke then, the healer interjecting that the Elements were not lost, that they shouldn’t be forsaken simply because of the cult’s actions. It was a comfort to Sephira to hear those words. The healer met her eyes and they exchanged a knowing glance. The Elements could emerge from this stronger than before if they managed to cut out the infection that had invaded their numbers.

Speaking of infection, it was soon Sephira’s turn to be healed. Faith approached, speaking a soft-spoken prayer under her breath as she worked. The skin on the Element’s face began to knit back together. Faith did a bit of delicate stitching at the end to close up the cut on the Sephira’s cheek. There would likely still be a fine scar once it healed, but it would be far less noticeable that it might have been. The Rupturer’s maneuver through the window earlier that night had cost her, but the woman was more than willing to pay the price. Things may have gone very differently if any one of the women hadn’t been there in the chamber. If Kura hadn’t been kidnapped as well then they would have been severly outnumbered by the cultists she had slain, Lavana had arrived just in time to help Max and Sephira get to safety, where Maxine had killed one of the cult leaders and nearly a second one, and Vega had cut she and Kura free of their chains. If anyone one of them had not been present, then the night may have gone very differently, and certainly not in their favor. Sephira was glad she had taken the risk in entering the warehouse, if all it cost her was a new scar, then it was a small price to pay.

“Lavana’s choices are her own; she can live with the consequences.” The mage grumbled, setting her hands in her lap while leaning forward on the table.

“I’m more concerned with Faith’s offer right now. “ She snapped sharply before turning toward the healer.

“You are capable of speaking with the dead?” Her tone was softer and inquisitive with the woman, she had been sympathetic toward the Element’s plight and Sephira had no intention of letting her sour attitude spoil the first lead within their reach. The idea of Faith being capable of speaking with deceased spirits was not totally shocking. There were many magics out there that Sephira was ignorant of, perhaps this was one of them?

“Many cultists died down there, most thanks to her.” She said, gesturing toward Kura. “And she’s right, many of the Earth cultists seemed to have been coerced. It was clear when I made contact with their Frequencies that they had reservations about their actions.” Sephira frowned, looking at her hands as she recalled the men who what switched sides because of her words.

"The men who changed sides, they died protecting the women. One of them would be ideal for this...if that is possible. "

Faith was good for comforting those in the throes of turmoil following the emergence of the Element cultists. Her positive suggestions and words of support in favor of the military that had squarely made themselves Max's enemy, however, would hold no weight over the indignant woman. The Elements might've held the sword that once protected Scalvoris and its people. That benevolent sword had turned, and Max had a gladius of her own that itched to confront the traitorous faction. She knew not how to wait and plan as these women did. The justice she sought needed to be swifter and more decisive. She longed for none other than an aggressive, bold offense. For now, though, she needed to heal. She could swallow her belligerence at least long enough to graciously allow Faith to work to her benefit.

"Guess the green hoods weren't lying, Max grumbled when the healer admitted there were indeed no drugs to offer her escape. "A small disappointment compared to the ones I've had as of late anyway." She hesitated for a moment to deliberate, but reluctantly nodded her official approval for Faith to utilize her strange green mist upon her injury. Her eyes suspiciously watched the healer's fingertips as the haze swirled toward her wound. The feeling of Faith's strange ability was uncomfortable in a way that was hard to describe. It didn't necessarily hurt. It just felt...odd in a way that couldn't be compared to anything she'd felt before. Some of the distrust left her stare after a few trills, and the offering of rum went far in settling her.

The Rusalka wasted no time opening the fresh bottle while Faith tended to the other survivors in turn. She was nearly a quarter of the way through the bottle when the healer revealed herself to possess another intriguing skill. Her brow shot up in surprise though she remained silent when Sephira voiced the exact question on her mind. Had she not just witnessed the weird green mist the jumped to her open wound, she might've sought to discredit Faith right then and there. Saying the alias "Earth Mask" aloud had the one-footed survivor standing straight. Her fingers clutched her crutch tightly, kindness conclusively retreating from her quickly darkened gaze. She held the neck of the rum bottle so tightly, it was a wonder it didn't fracture.

"If you can really talk to the dead, both of them are right," Max agreed, voice barely controlled. "Considering Sephira's an Element and she was unaware of the masked mens' identities, we can't count on the other captives that died down there to be of much help. Kura riddled enough bodies with arrows to offer a good enough selection of the dead, and I put down Water Mask before I reached the others. If I remember right, the Wind and Flame Masks found their deserved deaths before everything came crashing down, too." Her attention moved to each of the other women in her midst. She wanted to interrogate Water Mask, but she knew that suggestion was a selfish one. She couldn't further wound the dead. The dagger to his throat that ended his life was the most crushing blow she'd ever give him. It was a shame lightning didn't strike twice in that regard with Earth Mask.

"It should be one of the Earth cultists," the Rusalka begrudgingly nodded with a sigh. She didn't share Sephira's grief for the turncoats, nor would she follow Faith's lead in comforting her over their violent deaths. Saying she was sorry to see them go that way would've been a lie, and not a very good one. Still, the Earth cultists were likely direct followers of Earth Mask himself. Perhaps they'd seen his face before, knew his name or other details of his life crucial to hunting him down. The seeds of a new, furious obsession were starting to be sown. "We need something on Earth Mask." His name felt like poison on her tongue. "Now."

Max looked to Faith, hopefulness piercing the steeliness of her stare. Her concessions in favor of this investigation would mean little if the healer elected to walk back on her offer. Persuading one of the slain Earth cultists to give up their master wasn't just a promising lead. It was the only one that seemed readily attainable at all.

"Yes," she said in response to Sephira when she asked for clarification. "I am privileged with the mark and blessing of Famula, Vri and Moseke. Famula has granted me the ability to speak with the souls who are left behind. It is my duty to help them move over." With a glance around she shrugged slightly and added, "to be left behind is torture. But I can not determine who I get to speak to. If they are here, I can speak to them. If they are not, I can not." So it might be useful or it might be unutterably useless. They wouldn't know until they tried it. She explained the limitations of it to both Max and Sephira, though. It seemed important.

"If I am to speak with anyone specific, I need to be at their gravesite or holding something specific to them. I will do that, if needs be and either of those conditions can be met, but until then, I suggest we try this." She glanced around at them and then turned to Kura, glancing at her friend to make sure that the Mortalborn agreed. She did, as it turned out and so everyone seemed to think it was a good move. Faith was pleased that Kura did, the woman's opinion was important to her after all.

"Alright, so I'm going to need to go there. Which is fine. While I do, just let the Moseke healing work. I'll be back as quickly as I can." If any of them wanted to go with her, Faith had no issues with that, although she was clear, they'd see and hear nothing unless they normally saw souls on a trial by trial basis. Still, either way, Faith would make her way and then come back to the Order, once she'd had a conversation. With, as it turned out, a Lotharro who had been having sex, he told her, with a woman when everything went "kind of black". It was odd, since a redhead had walked in on them just moments before, but then, the building had collapsed and they'd died. She'd helped him to cross over, it was simply his confusion which had caused him to refuse Vri.

"So, there are a number of things. Many of them make no sense to me, not having been there," Faith said and she sat down, pressing the pads of her fingers together. Then, she spoke. "The Captain of the Mauve Maiden was a slaver, not a victim. The cultists were buying slaves from her - in fact she sold them her sister. That sister was sacrificed in the first ritual in Almund, which failed." With an inbreath, Faith spoke again, "the captain in question has a private island up towards the top of the world. The one you call Earth Mask, he built the compound in Almund and the one here, but he sealed the one in Almund after the failed ritual." Faith sighed slightly and added. "Apparently he likes candied pecans, a lot and he knows, or knew, the Curse Eater well."

Looking at them, she shrugged slightly. "It was the best I could find out. Death is a confusing and frightening thing and the recently dead are notoriously chaotic. I was lucky to get as much lucidity as I did." She'd been able to help some of the souls there, too, and that was done in Famula's name. With a slight smile, though, she raised an eyebrow. "Is it helpful?"

Kura and Cally remained silent as the others discussed Faith's ability to speak to the dead, and when Faith spoke up about the fate of those left behind, the ghost shrugged. "I don't feel particularly tortured, and I would know what would be feelin' like, all things bein' considered. But then, I wasn't left behind, I chose to stay behind. Maybe that's makin' a difference in my experience." she said, her tone cheerful. Then she reached over to one of the medical tables and started poking at the tools on it. "What could you possibly use a knife like that for, it's too small to cut meat..." she muttered as the others spoke.

Kura just gave her ghostly companion an amused look, then turned back to the others. "Aye, go and speak to them at the docks, but be careful, aye?" she said, finding a chair while Faith went to talk to the dead. When Faith returned, she found the Mortalborn looking a little grumpy, as she'd been very firmly told she was not allowed to smoke her pipe in the hospital. However, she listened intently as Faith made her report, then looked down at hands in thought for a moment. "We'll need to find and open the chamber in Almund, safely as possible. I don't know if it'll have anything helpful, but it bears lookin' into. Once the investigations into the Elements is finished, we'll want to send folks up to this private isle as well. Both locations might have clues, tell us what they were tryin' to do. If we know the end game, we might be able to cut them off from it, force them into the open." she said, her tone intent.

She thought for a moment, then shook her head. "Somethin' came up before all this went south, I'll have to attend to that as well. But candied pecans is a good lead, one that bears lookin' into." she said, before pausing in deep thought. "I've heard the name "Curse Eater" before. Came up in regards to somethin' that went down in the Almund Graveyard a few seasons back. I...I wouldn't think they're connected, but it's a possibility. Either way, going' to have to talk to that one. We'll need to start lookin' for her in Almund, I think." she said, shaking her head. "Thoughts from the rest of you?" she asked, the others, before frowning suddenly. "Cally, leave your ear alone." she said, irritably. Cally jumped and took her hand away from her ear, whistling badly in a vain attempt to play innocent.

[Order of the Adunih] Healing Hurts

Sephira waited in silence for Faith to return, hoping wordlessly that perhaps the woman could point them towards a clue. Once the healer returned the soldier waited with bated breath as the woman explained what she had discovered.

So the Captain of the Mauve Maiden had been a slaver. Sephira had felt like something had been off with the woman in the tri-corner hat, but she had been too wrapped up in the activity of the cult to really investigate her. What caught her attention the most was the mention of a failed ritual in Almund. Earth Mask had made both the chamber her in Scalvoris Town and another one in Almund. They would need to find that first chamber and investigate it. A clear path began to form in Sephira’s mind. She now had the support of the Elements as a Special Assistant, she could requisition troops and perhaps even a Defier to help her find and get inside the first cavern.

The mention of candied pecans was a fact that she stowed away at the back of her mind for the moment. Perhaps there was a supplier somewhere in town that they could interview and see if they had encountered Earth Mask before. It was a long shot, but not a detail that should be forgotten.
When Kura mentioned finding the chamber the young mage piped up. “I’ll look into taking some troops to Almund for an investigation into the chamber. Maybe there will be some clue as to why the cult was formed and who started it all.”

Her voice was firm and self-assured, at least now she had a plan to move forward.

The Element went quiet as Kura spoke, mentioning the Curse Eater and the candied pecans. Perhaps the council woman could see to those leads while the mage investigated the chamber in Almund with the Elements.

They had a route forward, at least that was something.

Final Notes

Quite the interesting thread ladies. Glad to see everyone playing along so nicely and not being at all rude or mean to one another. I don't know who traumatized and injured your PCs but boy are they a scoundrel. I sure hope you're careful moving forward in some of the plots extending from this...
